Its a perfect day for a class outside, and by the lake too! The warm september breeze swept the grounds at the south side of the castle. The location was popular for students who generally liked roaming around outside, but it was not a good place to take notes. Which was probably why Professor Scabior did not look at ease as he stood, holding a quiet conversation with Professor Williamson. The Care of Magical Creatures Professor looked quite fine though, turning away from the conversation to flash a smile at each new student that arrived.
"Just gather around here, and take a seat." Scabior said loudly, pointing to the general grassy area.
OOC: Class hasn't started yet, so feel free to join in! Just please, keep chatting to a minimum. Also, if you haven't already, please make sure to read the Care of Magical Creatures Rules AND the History of Magic Rules CLASS HAS STARTED! Do not post your character late. Aspen just barely concealed her smile/laugh. She felt bad for the new girl that though it a good idea to bring their professors flowers. But... the reactions, or practiced non-reactions from them - funny.
She raised her hand. "Since you're seeking guesses, perhaps you're going to go over the historical significance of some creature...?" Aspen paused, then added, "I hope it's unicorns."
Since they were SORT of asking. Sort of. Okay, not really, but a girl could hope. Unicorns were historically significant... and they wouldn't really DO inside. So it was feasible - at least in Aspen's head.
It felt weird having a joint class so early in the year, and it being History and Magical Creatures made it weirder. Upon hearing the first question, Em raised her hand and responded. "Are we outside because we will be working with creatures that are too big to have indoors?" because you wouldn't take a horse into a classroom to learn about it, you would go to the horse. "Or maybe we're learning about a great battle that took place outside."

Sitting in the grassy area around the lake, Cornelius leaned back onto his palms as the class gathered, his light brown eyes wandering over the surroundings; he hadn't gotten the chance to explore the area around the lake yet, being new this year and having so much Hogwarts grounds to see. As the lesson began and the two professors introduced themselves, he evaluated the pair and quickly noticed the difference in the two men and how differently they approached the situation of a class outdoors.
When the History of Magic professor posed the first question, asking why they thought the joint lesson was being held outside, the new Ravenclaw thought for a moment. He had wondered about it when he first heard the two subjects were joining together by the lake, but he didn't think about it extensively enough for a good answer. But as he thought about it a bit more, his hand raised and he waited until he was called before suggesting his own answer, "Possibly because many magical creatures are too large or dangerous to be indoors, and the lesson involves both the study of the creature and the evaluation of its influence in magic's history?" he wasn't sure if that was the kind of answer they were looking for or not, but it was the best he could think of.

Autumn new she shouldnt but she couldnt help smirk to herself at this answer, Unicorns? Really! They were not typiclly historicly significent, they may have played a small role, but That would more be care of magical creatures surely? Oh well Maybe this girl was a bit of a dippy day dreamer.
Autumn looked back at the professors listening to the answers given.

Amelia raised her hand and attempted to answer the question. "We are outside because we are studying the history of some magical creatures, and some of these creatures might be outside here for the class?" That was the best guess she had as to why they were doing this as an outside joint lesson as opposed to just a normal lecture class.

Lily was puzzled by this question. Why was this joint HoM/CoMC class outside? When Lily thought she had an answer, she put up her hand waiting to be called upon. "I think we are having the joint class outside so that we will have a returning teacher assisting a new teacher whose class is typically held outside, Care of Magical Creatures is typically held outside that is." Lily said once it was her turn to speak. Now that is using my head. Lily thought to herself. And nobody has thought of that so far. She thought smiling to herself.

Scabior was pretty sure that educating the students of Hogwarts was in his job description. Otherwise he was just getting paid to live in a giant castle and do nothing. And WHAT in the world was he going to do with a flower. "...Thank you Miss Neil." He took the daisy and stared at it for a second before shoving it into William's chest. He liked flowers, right?

Scabior cleared his throat loudly, a sign for any little conversations going on to stop. Class had started, and he wasn't going to tolerate students talking over him. "Good morning class. For any of your new students, I am Professor Scabior and this-" He pointed to the overgrown kid by his side."Is the new Care of Magical Creatures Professor, Professor Williamson." Did that clear things up? Yup. Introductions were good. "As you can tell, today's joint History of Magic, and Care of Magical Creatures lesson is outside." He held out his arms, as he stated the obvious.
Hopefully they knew this.
Because if they didn't, Scabior wanted them out of his class as fast as possible.
"Does anyone have any idea, why this is?" Any guesses? What did they think?
Alyssa thought for awhile and then raised her hand."Professors, I believe that the reason why we are doing our Care of Magical Creatures lesson outside is because their sanctuary is outside here and it wouldn't be right to take the creature out from it's familiar setting and bring it inside the castle where it wouldn't feel confortable. Besides if we were working with a creature that was big or slightly dangerous, we wouldn't want to expose the other students in the castle to possible danger. As for why History of Magic is being help up here, I am guessing that the magical creature we are studying, no matter what it is, has a place somewhere in history and that is why we are now having a combined class here."
Alyssa hoped that her reasoning made sense and that her answer wasn't wrong.
Nessie raised her hand timidly. Open ended question's weren't her thing. She decided she wanted to answer anyway. "Animals don't mix well with classrooms so it's a whole lot easier to have the animals outside." She knew it was a stupid easy answer but it was all she could come up with.
Any sorting of note-taking on the floor was nearly impossible. There was no support. When Eino tried to place the parchment on his legs and write, he poked several holes on his parchment until he decided to lighten his grip on the quill. That was just to practice, though, he didn't yet have anything worth noting. When Professor Scabior posed the first question, Eino's hand was raised. "Well, I know why this isn't, and it couldn't possibly be because we are studying Gytrashes, but we most certainly and undoubtedly will be learning about something that is inconvenienced in a small and enclosed classroom setting." He wouldn't mind studying Gytrashes, though, but the bigger the creature, the more fun.

THIS.
This right here. This had to be every fourteen-year-old girl's dream come true. No. Not Scabior. Scabior and Williamson. Merlin knew what he was doing when he paired those two up in one class period.
Despite this, Sierra had frowned earlier in the class period when Scabior had gestured toward a patch of grass for them to take a seat on. What did he think they were--some kind of animal?! He could have at least magicked some chairs out here, but nooo--they were meant to gather on the grass like some mooncalf out for a midnight stroll.
She'd followed along with the others, though, and now here she sat, torn between wanting the class to move along and never ever end. "...because we're pairing up creatures who roam outside with some significant event in history?" she suggested, her hand raised. Duh. "Let's go with...Hippogriffs? I hear they're great for making quick getaways."
Louisa was biting her fingernails while waiting for the class to settle down and for one of the professors to declare the start of the lesson. She smiled when a girl gave flowers to the professors, that was very sweet of her - even though Scabior apparently was highly allergic to sweetness.
And the lesson started indeed.
....huh? Was he asking about being outside? Well.. the girl with the munching-fingernails habit could come up with something. Louisa raised her hand, pulling it away from her mouth, and spoke, "We're up for some activity with the creatures we're learning about today. A creature with long and magical history, too perhaps? Like Acromentulas." Because she had no idea why History of magic would be combined with CoMC AND held outside.

Gideon was all ready and focused when class was started, listening to the name of the new COMC professor and making a note of it. Professor Williamson...check. At the first question of the the class, the reason they were indeed outside, the 5th year was about to answer but ti seemed so many of his classmates had the same reasoning.
Aye...creatures class was almost ALWAYS outside.
HOM class...not so much but certainly more fluid in locations, as long as one didn't need any heavy props to teach with. So instead of speaking up since he had no clue what to add, Gideon simple remained quiet. No sense risking getting Scabior upset.

Really, Scabior? Ellie raised an eyebrow. "Care of Magical Creatures is usually outside. We're probably working with a creature." Seemed....obvious.
Like the Kinglsey/Lawson lesson. Although, they didn't really work with creatures then, they became creatures. But it was more or less the same thing.
The look that the sixth year gave him did not go unnoticed. Scabior simply gave the girl a hard stare before turning back to the rest of the class.

Melanie looked around, wondering what aspect of the grounds would possibly be relevant to History of Magic. She was certainly looking forward to working with some kind of magical creature though, if that was in fact what they were doing. The most exotic animals she'd ever seen were in a muggle zoo, so she was excited to see what kinds of animals existed in the wizarding world. Melanie loved animals and had a bit of a bleeding heart for them; her own cat was even a stray picked up from the humane society.
Scabior watched with interest as he noticed the first year looking around the ground. That was a start. Looking at their surroundings.

"That's...a good guess." Scabior looked over at William. "Though I doubt Professor Williamson would admit to needing my assistance." He probably did. The man wasn't that smart.

"Today we aren't studying one specific creature or one moment in history. Our focus today is on-" Scabior jabbed his thumb behind him. "The Hogwarts lake." Yes. The lake. "Obviously we are all familiar with the lake, and if you are not, well, it's right there get familiar with it- perhaps even introduce yourself to it." But not NOW because then you would be talking over him. "The lake has been a part of Hogwarts since the castle was created 1,000 years ago. Now why do you think, the founders included a lake within Hogwarts? And how do you guys think it has been used in the past?"

Arabella-Marie thought and raised her hand and said "Well it was used in triwizard tourniment back when Harry Potter was at school here and it is also home to the giant squid and the merpeople"
Taylor raised her hand after a few minutes, "Is it because they wanted a place for all the creatures who wanted a place to stay, lke creatures that need to be in water have a lake and creatures that needed to be in the woods have the forbidden forest?"
Eino was sure that the plumbing was one of the reasons, but that was unrelated to magical creatures. The boy shot his hand high in the air, and when granted permission to speak he began. "The lake does harbors a wide variety of creatures, ranging from those who could be qualified as beings, such as the merpeople, and those that are less being-like, such as Grindylows. I should believe that all of this makes the lake a rich and resourceful site for learning, and since we do use it for plumbing we also have to be conscious of the creatures using it as their home." He did include the plumbing in there, after all, which he hoped wouldn't be entirely wrong. There was also the giant squid, but Eino sometimes was sure that the creature either migrated or hibernated because it rarely showed itself to the students.
The lake? Wow. That drew the girl's attention and instead of lazily sitting and biting her nails, she was eagerly sitting and biting her nails. Once the question was asked, she shot her hand up in the air, "I don't think the founders included the lake, sir. I'd like to think that it was there even before the Castle with its creatures living inside of it. Maybe the founders thought it might be useful to teaching that they included in the school's property?" Yesh, that was Louisa's opinion on the matter.
"It's used to transfer first years from the platform over to the castle for so long." She had no idea why, though. It was just a creepy way of welcoming kids to this world in her opinion.

Kurumi had been looking forward to Care of Magical Creatures all summer, so she was more than a little disappointed when she had first seen the noticeboard and noted that it was going to be a JOINT lesson with Professor Scary Face. Still, she had decided recently that the man wasn't as bad as she had first thought him to be and that his HATRED for her certainly wasn't anything to keep her away from classes - especially her favorite one.
Kurumi thought for a moment before raising her hand. "Perhaps they chose to include a lake because not all of the wizarding world is on land. Part of the reason Hogwarts was created was to provide a safe haven for wizarding children, so I suppose that it is possible that they also wanted to create a safe place for other parts of the wizarding world as well. In the lake, magical beings like merpeople, the giant squid, and grindylows could be safe and protected."
Kurumi lowered her hand and took a glance around the area. This notion could also be applied to the Forbidden Forest come to think of it.

"The Lake has...creatures in it already, though, right? Merpeople and grindylows and stuff. Maybe this location chose the founders, rather than the other way around. Building a magical school nearby would keep the creatures protected, and the Muggles ignorant." Would she get a response this time?
Not that silent Scabior was really anything bad. At least Ellie wasn't being called 'ROCK'. She was no mineral, Scab.

Pam smiled and thought for a moment. They could have done it for magical underwater creatures. Or maybe they needed it for any visitors. She thought harder. There must have been something else. Pam raised her hand. "Is it because they wanted to keep a creature in there? And did they use it for a merpeople class of some sort?"

Sophie looked at the lake when professor Scabior said that they would be studying it today. "Weird, studying about a lake!" she thought. "That should be interesting!" She looked back at the professors and raised her hand.
"Maybe the lake was here all along and... I know there are merpeople living there and all sorts of creatures." she turned her head again to face the lake. "So Hogwarts' founders didn't want to bother them, or actually even liked having this kind of creatures in the school! They should be useful to some of the classes, like this one!" she was smiling when faced the professors again. It totally made sense to her.
