The charms classroom was clean and bright and ready for the first lesson of the year and Professor Schirmer was waiting at the front of the class for the students to arrive.
Was she in a good mood? Well she was ALMOST smiling, at least.
The desks are set up in the usual way, no funny business today.

ooc: sorry for the time conversion confusion O_O I do not know how I got it so messed up, I'm totally usually an expert. I blame posting the notice before I was awake.
Don't worry if you can't join in from the beginning, this lesson will last through the weekend and this first post will be updated as the lesson progresses.
Questions so far: What should firsties know about charms? What do we know about incantations? How do we make a spell and its effects cease? Why do you think we will want to use Finite and NOT Finite Incantatem as the counterspell today? What do you know about Gripping Charms and what do you think they'd be useful for? The gripping charm you will learn today has the incantation 'Prehenso'. Can anyone guess how the meaning of this incantation relates to its purpose? Can you think of any related English words?
ooc instructions for practising activity can be found here and here
Class is OVER but come and play CAPTURE THE FLAG! This will be your homework and the game is worth 20 points each!

First, I'd like for you to cast this charm on your hand. You'll know when it has worked because your hand will tingle a little bit, and if you run your hand along your desk, the wood will feel slightly more roughened. Don't feel bad if you don't get it right away. I'd like you to cast the charm on your hand and then after you feel the difference between the charmed hand and the uncharmed hand against the wood, I'd like you to cast finite to counter the charm.
Can I get an older student who already knows how to cast finite to come to the front of the class to demonstrate it, please?"
ooc: instructions:
1. cast prehenso on the hand your character is not using their wand with (fairly obvious... right?)
2. put your wand down and touch your desk with both hands and compare the different feeling between the gripping charm and how your hand usually feels on contact with the wood. take note of the tingling sensation!
3. cast finite on your charmed hand.
Older students: If you want to demonstrate finite, just RP coming to the front of the class and showing how to do it, no need to wait to get called on.
Younger students: It might be worthwhile to RP watching how to do finite and practising it too Just saying. *eyes house points*
Once you're charrie has successfully shown they can do this, they'll be allowed to go outside. There will be a thread for this, so simply wait for additional instructions from me. I'll post a link in the first post too.
This should take at least three posts! you have around 20 hours to do this. Other than that, this will be the end of the first part of the lesson.
Zhenya listened to Professor Schirmer, and then watched eagerly as some of the older students came up the front to demonstrate. She watched with a lot of concentration, wanting to take everything in. It looked relatively easy, but looking and doing were very different. She just hoped it would work!
Once they were given directions to cast the spell on her hand, she got ready. She had her wand in her hand, and held out her other hand. "Prehenso," she said, casting at her hand. Oh, it did feel tingly!

post #3 Feeling the effect of the spell and attempting to go back to normal

Violet felt the tingly sensation in her hand and placed it on her desk. It was the most bizarre feeling. She could feel the roughness of the wood and as she she tried to move her hand, it could not move. She did not like the feeling, not one bit so she quickly took her wand to attempt the Finite spell to end the charm.
She pointed the wand at her hand and said loudly. "Finite"
Nothing seemed to have happened as she still had the tingly sensation, so she said again "Finite". Slowly her hand slid off the desk and she flexed her fingers finally going back to normal. It was a very unpleasant spell to work with, but it was a good experience. She looked around her classmates to see what they were doing. It seemed like everyone was very successful with their attempts as well.

Having just cast the "Protego" charm on her hand, she put down her wand. Well, her hand did feel tingly so hopefully it had worked! She was a little bit excited for the next step! Did it work? Or not...
It did!! She ran both her hands over the desk. On one hand, it felt smooth. Like normal. She had never thought that the desk had felt smooth until now, when she took note of its texture. On the other hand, it certainly felt rougher. She wasn't sure the texture was something she would always want to feel - definitely not, but it wasn't so bad. She was quite happy that she was able to cast the spell.

Okay, this was far too much... it was unpleasant. Now to reverse the spell... if she was lucky.
Aurora thought back to seeing the older girl casting Finite and tried to remember exactly how she had done it.
Right... Aurora pointed her wand at her hand again and said, "Finite." The tingling wore off slightly... but it was still sort of there. She tried again. "Finite." It took another two tried before the tingling completely went and her hands felt normal again.

Having successfully cast the Protego spell, probably because of her concentration during practice, she now felt satisfied to 'stop' the charm. She picked her wand back up from the table - but changed her mind. No, Zhenya wanted to feel the table again. It was really quite weird for her, having never experienced something like this before. She put both hands on the table again just to feel it.
After a while she decided it was time to use the counter-charm. She knew she could use it again, and feel different textures. "Finite," she cast on her hand. She put her hands back on the table, and it felt smooth to both hands. She was so happy she had been able to cast both the charm and the counter-charm.

Gideon played around a little more with his two hands, wanting to get a good idea of the difference so he was prepared for whatever activity was awaiting them outside. The boy not wanting to struggle in his attempt simply because he couldn't compensate for the difference between charmed and uncharmed. Finally satisfied, he picked up his wand once more, ready to cast the spell to return his left hand back until it was needed.
"Finite!" he cast, moving his wand in the direction he had known to use since he had learned the spell in the first place. The tingling started to tamper off but wasn't totally vanishing. "Finite!" Gideon cast once more to try once more and this time it worked, the boy moving his left hand and finding no reaction to the desk anymore.

Violet practiced a couple more times, feeling the tingly sensation and the Finite charm while. She was getting bored of this, but there was nothing else to do and she knew that no was allowed to chit chat during class. She waited until the professor's order to move outside.

Lily felt ready, so when the Professor announced that they could attempt the charm, Lily took her wand out. Holding it in her right hand, Lily proceeded to twist and tap, and say "Prehenso" firmly and clearly, attempting to put the charm on her left hand. It, hadn't worked quite yet. Trying again, Lily focused solely on having the charm work on her left hand. So again, with a twist and tap, Lily said "Prehenso." This time it had worked, she could feel the tingling sensation on her hand. I did it! Lily thought.
Being mesmerized with her charmed hand for quite a few moments was more than just enough probably. Satisfied with the tingling and uncomfy feeling coming from the spell, the girl picked up her wand again and pointed it at the charmed hand.
"Finite," she murmured. Nothing happened and she tried passing her hand across the desk again. The tingling was still there. SHE HAD DAMAGED HER BEAUTIFUL HAND! While her panic rose, she started, "Finite, finite, finite, finite..." gulping and sliiightly shaking. Moving her hand across the table, it finally felt normal. And just to prove it she tried it with the uncharmed hand and they both felt the same. That was a proof of going back to normal, no? Yeah, yeah, it was.
The girl's eyes were still on her previously charmed hand though. It wasn't about to glow, was it?

Mike began to concentrate and said the incantation "Prehenso!!" He twisted his wand, and tapped his hand. Nothing, not a spark, tingle, anything. "Ok, let's try it again. Prehenso!! He twisted his wand again, and tapped his hand. Nothing. "Man, what am i doing wrong? Mike then sits back and tries to clear his mind. Ok, I go it. Prehenso!! Twisted his wand, and tapped his hand. Sierra had just finished experimenting with the charm, when she glanced over and saw a Gryffindor directly next to her. He apparently needed help, something Sierra wasn't always jumping stumps to give; but seeing as she was on the exact same step the boy was on, she decided to at least show him. Professor Schirmer had asked for the older students to come up and help anyway, and although Sierra didn't exactly know if she was considered one of the 'older ones', she definitely wasn't one of the 'younger ones'.
"Here, ...look. Watch me," she said, taking a few steps closer to him. "The first thing you need to do is relax. The wandwork and incantation are only part of the casting. You've got to concentrate on your intent, too." To show him how relaxed she was, she took a deep breath and let it out slowly. Then she flicked her wrist, popping her wand out its holster and into her hand. With her wand in her right hand, the uncharmed hand, Sierra extended her left hand in front of her. It still felt weird and was tingling a good bit, but maybe that just meant she'd done a good job.
With her eyes and thoughts directly on her charmed hand, she pointed her wand right at it and said, "Finite!" She lowered her wand then watched her hand, still focusing on exactly what she'd aimed to happen. The tingling sensation slowly died out, and pretty soon, her hand was back to normal. She lowered her left hand and looked at the Gryffindor. "So now you try it. Focus on your hand, point your wand at the same hand, and then say the incantation," she said.

Lily was glad to be able to get her hand to tingle. that means it's working, i think. She thought as she reached out and touched the desk. Woah, it's way cool. Lily though putting her wand down to use her non-charmed hand to feel the desk. I did it! there is definitely a difference. Now all she had to do was to un-charm her hand. So she looked to the front of the room to see how it was done.

He wiped his hand across the desk, back to normal. "Thanks, I thought I was in big trouble" He had to make sure he remembered how to relax, and don't panic.

They had to cast this charm on THEMSELVES? But what happened if they cast it wrong?? Would their hands fall off? Would they not be able to grab anything every again? EEP! So much pressure!
Trying not to get anxious over the fact that he was about to change the behavior of one of his own appendages, he took a deep breath and closed his eyes. He could do this. He could DO this.
"Prehenso!" he muttered, except he got a bit nervous and dropped his wand in the process. GAH. Stop being a spazz Greingoth!
At least nothing bad had happened. His hand felt perfectly fine.
Alright, attempt number two in three, two...one...
"Prehenso!" he said again, doing the twist and tap movement they'd practiced earlier. He squinted his eyes and suddenly felt an odd sensation in his hand. That...meant it worked, right? He opened his eyes fully and looked at his left hand. It wasn't purple or anything, it looked normal...it looked like he'd done it!

Mike looked around and noticed a girl was looking a little lost so he walked up to her. "Hey, need some help? I am just learning too, but maybe we can work together." He hoped he wasn't coming off too strong, he just wanted to help, and he was a little excited he was getting the hang of the new spell. "After you have done the spell, relax, and concentrate on what you want to do next. To reverse the spell, Point your wand at the effected hand, then say, finite. The tingling should go away. He was happy to pass on some of the knowledge that was given to him, not too long ago.

Now that Lily had performed the charm, tested to see that it worked, and had watched the older students perform the removal charm, she felt confident that she would be able to do the last charm. So she picked up her wand, and pointing it at her hand, said "Finite" As soon as she said those words, her hand stopped feeling all odd and when she tested her hand on the desk, she could tell that it was back to normal. Lily then turned to her notebook, jotted down some notes and waited for the professor to continue.

Lily heard someone talking to her. "That's ok, I think I've got it." Lily said looking at her hand. "Thanks anyway."
Kennedy listened to instructions and nodded...mostly to himself. He took his wand practiced the wand movement again without actually saying the incantation. He wondered what would happen if someone did it wrong. He guessed the most that would happen is a massive tickling sensation one's hand.
Eh.
He directed his wand at his left hand and did a twist and tap motion. "Prehenso!" he said with a stern, yet clear voice. It was followed by a tingling sensation on his left hand.

The tingling had started to get a bit stronger, which Alex took to be a good sign even though he was still a bit nervous that he'd somehow did something wrong. He reached forward towards the edge of his desk and firmly grasped the edge of the table with both hands. WHOAAAA.
He could definitely feel his grasp had changed since doing the spell. His left hand was a lot stronger than it had been before and clung to the desk more firmly than his right hand. It was surreal! It almost felt like his dominant hands had switched and somehow gotten a lot stronger in the process. This was TOO cool.
Letting out a sigh of relief that he'd done it right, he tried a few other things as well. His quill felt a lot different in his left hand now, almost like he could actually write with it instead of producing handwriting that looked like it had been written by a monkey. His book was a lot easier to grab as well. After experimenting with a few more things he went back to the edge of the desk, since the difference between his grips was more evident there. This was so cooooool!

The little Hufflepuff was lucky that other students told her to stop that tapping. After all, disrupting the lesson was something the professor tended to take points for. At least she was on task now.

After a few seconds, the tingling left his left hand entirely, and one more slide test confirmed that the gripping charm was gone. His hands still burned, though, and Ravenclaw couldn't afford to lose any more points.
"Looks like you're allergic to the wood varnish." Althea commented, seeing the boy's hand. Why would she teach a charm that would hurt her students and then get them to use it on themselves? She wouldn't.

The envelope had looked important after all.

Kennedy set his wand down and placed his right hand on the desk first. He concentrated on the texture and smoothness of the wooden surface. Okay, got that part. Then, he set his left hand on the desk and noticed the difference.
With his right hand it was smooth and when he moved it, it swiftly glided on the table top. With his left hand he felt that tingling sensation follow his hand as he moved it around the table.
Selina looked at all of the students who were now working in the classroom. It seemed that she had fallen behind a bit because of the shock she had fallen into when her Professor told her that she was going to be performing the gripping charm on her hand. It was not that Selina did not trust herself and the magic that she knew, it was more that casting spells on herself always made Selina uncomfortable. She did not know why it was but she could never wrap her head around doing magic on herself- it just seemed like a bad idea.
Biting her tongue she finally decided to get started on the task at hand. She drew her wand out of her holster and then pointed it toward her arm. Taking in a deep breath she pointed it at her arm and whispered, "Prehenso..." Oh Merlin THIS was a bad idea. Magic was delicate and she did not like messing with it on herself.
Mom says I have no sense of direction, so I packed my bags and right.
Taking note from the older students Oakey picked his wand up Finite he said aloud. The strange feeling in his hand was gone. but to be sure he passed it along the top of his desk again. This time without any rough or bumpy feeling.

OH it was time to get moving with the lesson. Whoops. He'd gotten distracted experimenting with his new gripping powers. He looked at his hand and pulled out his wand. "Finite," he muttered, flexing his hand a few times after casting the charm as the feeling started to return to normal in his left hand.
Now that that was done, he wanted to see what this game was about!

The change to her hand, from the charm, had been abit distracting to Stella. Instinctively she knew she should just end the spell and get ready for class to move on, but the feeling like her hand could grasp things better was just so odd. She'd moved from testing it on her desk to other things. The strap of her bag was interesting, as she rand her hand in a loose fist over it. That didn't last long, though, as she quickly started to worry that she was going to damage the fabric, and she moved back to the desk. Not until after she'd ran her non-charmed hand over the strap of her bag as well, though. Just to check.
Things were good, so she went on to glide her hands across her desk again. It still felt like her left hand would stick to the wood if she left it in one place too long. She had to stop soon, however. Especially as they only had a few minutes before it seemed like the class was moving outside.
