Default Charms Introduction & Gripping Charm

The charms classroom was clean and bright and ready for the first lesson of the year and Professor Schirmer was waiting at the front of the class for the students to arrive.

Was she in a good mood? Well she was ALMOST smiling, at least.

The desks are set up in the usual way, no funny business today.

Quote:
ooc: sorry for the time conversion confusion O_O I do not know how I got it so messed up, I'm totally usually an expert. I blame posting the notice before I was awake.

As usual, please read the charms code of conduct before playing.

Don't worry if you can't join in from the beginning, this lesson will last through the weekend and this first post will be updated as the lesson progresses.

Revision for this lesson cam be found here

Questions so far:
What should firsties know about charms?
What do we know about incantations?
How do we make a spell and its effects cease?
Why do you think we will want to use Finite and NOT Finite Incantatem as the counterspell today?
What do you know about Gripping Charms and what do you think they'd be useful for?
The gripping charm you will learn today has the incantation 'Prehenso'. Can anyone guess how the meaning of this incantation relates to its purpose? Can you think of any related English words?

ooc instructions for practising activity can be found here and here

Class is OVER but come and play CAPTURE THE FLAG! This will be your homework and the game is worth 20 points each!

"Not always, but it often does."

"Yes, you can."

"Yes, that's right." Not specific but still right.

"Only if it is a spell or a counter-spell. You couldn't just say a Latin word that happens to mean the opposite of the spell you are trying to stop and expect anything to happen."

"It does depend on the charm, yes."

"That's right."

And there we go! Finite!

"Right."

Now they were getting into it.

"Absolutely right." She nodded.

"Finite IncantATEM." Althea corrected. "And a counter-spell is only a counter-curse if it is intended to negate a curse." But she wasn't wrong, the professor was simply clarifying, and providing corrections.
"Finite or Finite Incantatem, yes and as for lowering your wand, it depends on the spell. Think of it this way, bewitched items would not retain their magical properties if they required the spell to be constantly applied and targeted."

"Right."

"Right. Lumos has Nox."

"In some cases, yes." The professor answered.

She nodded at the Ravenclaw. Right.

And was it just her or was THAT the most engaged she'd SEEN Miss Stone? It made Professor Schirmer curious in return.

"Absolutely correct." All three points as it were.

"You could block the spell from taking hold to begin with, yes. But jinxes are opposed by counter-jinxes, not counter-curses." Semantics but still.

Enthusiasm was only good when the answers were right... so it was a good thing this 'puff was right.

"Right." Professor Schirmer answered, with a small smile in spite of herself.

"Absolutely right and thank you for sharing the difference between those two, its very important and often confused." And they'd be using just the one today.

"Finite Incantatem does not work on everything. Usually if there is a specific counter-spell, the specific one is necessary, but it is also a matter of strength and experience of the caster. A first year would have a tougher time of negating all spell effects with Finite Incantatem than a seventh year." And as for the unforgiveable part, "No way except for dodging them or presenting a physical barrier as an obstacle." So shield didn't work.

"It very much depends on the spell. Charms by nature have more longevity than some other spells, and will last on their own without need for constant focus from the original caster."

"That's right." Just about everything.

"That's right, you need to use the counter, until the spell effects wear off on their own." Which they would... eventually.

"Correct." Althea answered with a nod.

"Almost everything." She agreed.

She was pretty sure that August Goldstein now knew, on pain of DEATH that he should keep his mouth shut now.

"Like death." She agreed, pointedly. WATCHYOSEEEELFFF, Gryffindor.

Good thing he kept delivering good answers, or she wouldn't like him.

"You're right."

"Yes, Mr. Uronen, thank you for that answer." She mentally chalked up a few more points to the Ravenclaw.

Oh and Keefer got another smile from the professor.

"Sometimes you do need to use a series of spells to negate the composite effect of spells applied to a bewitched object. That's right!" And tied into one of their future lessons as it was. Aww she liked that 'puffer. She would like to give him almost as many points as she would like to load on a Ravenclaw. Almost.

You know, if she were less impartial and fair.

"That's right, thank you for clarifying the differences."

"It can stop some spells yes." She agreed with the two students.

"In some cases. It depends on the spell."
"Yes in all cases those approaches are effective to varying degrees."

"It is pretty universal, but it is also non-specific which is sometimes a problem."

"And you should use a specific counter if there is one, yes."

"That's true. A lot of spells don't have a counter, and that is when you'd use Finite Incantatem or Finite if possible."

"That's right Miss Wheatborn." Had she raised her hand?

"Yes, counter-spells."

"Finite Incantatem is one way, yes."

"Those two are right but some Dark Magic can be reversed or the injuries healed at least partially. You're right about a body part lost to that curse being permanent, however."

"Yes a counter-spell used to counter a charm is called a counter-charm."

"That's right."

"Counter-curses for curses or counter-charms for charms. Also known as counter-spells as a catch-all term." She clarified. And Finite Incantatem was obviously right.

"Right."

SPOILER!!: answers to your questions, points deductions, all that fun stuff

Really? What was this Ravenclaw doing? NOT paying attention, clearly.

"5 points from Ravenclaw for NOT paying attention to the lesson. You can revise in your own time, NOT in mine."

And because her attention was already on the student.

"Another five points from you for chatting in class. Do NOT distract other students." Or do anything else which would make Althea have to take points from her former house. Sigh.
ooc: Refer to the Charms Code of Conduct! Althea's pretty strict. However you'll totally earn the points back for participating so please don't get disenchanted, losing points is part of the fun.

"Nox does negate lumos but we aren't doing either of those spells today."

"Magic, like anything else, is a skill." Althea answered. "One you can learn and better yourself in, but as with any skill, some have a natural talent and are more likely to do better or find it easy. If you're magical however, which you are or you wouldn't be here, then as long as you work hard, you can do well for yourself. As for intent being the same, that isn't always true. Sometimes it depends on things like, who has the most to lose, who is more desperate, who needs something more. Intent is very often emotion-driven. Does that help? If you wish to talk about it more, we can do so after class, or I can share a book on the topic." Althea Schirmer had a lot of books.

Really?

REALLY?

Althea wasn't even going to entertain nonsense like that.

"Five points from Hufflepuff for a ridiculous, blatantly incorrect answer and for not taking the question seriously." Throwing your wand on the ground and stamping on it? A wand was like.... an extension of yourself.

....

Was that a TONE? Was the little Gryffindor taking a TONE with her? Althea eyed the girl for a long moment. The scoffing and arm-crossing did not plead her case.

"If you don't have anything constructive to say, then don't say anything at all. 5 points from you for rudeness and for NOT raising your hand to speak."

Sigh.

Not that she minded taking points but Althea didn't like being the baddie so to speak. But still, there were some things she would NOT tolerate. Simple.

"The ways to end or negate spell effects include," And the words appeared on the blackboard as she spoke. "Use of a specific counterspell; use of a spell that opposes the specific spell effects; use of a generic counterspell; in some cases, the death of the caster; in some cases, lowering your wand and ceasing your focus; the use of potions to negate the effects in question ; preventing the spell from taking hold by blocking or warding against it ; wait for the spell effects to wear off on its own; use a series of spells to negate composite spell effects."

"Of course not all of these methods are effective in all cases. Remember that charms, by nature tend to be longer-lasting. Think of magical, bewitched objects. The charms on these are not applied constantly, and the intent used to apply said charms does not need to be held in the original caster's mind in order for them to continue working." So the concept of lowering your wand really only worked while the charm was being cast in the first place. Mmmhmm.

"The difference between Finite and Finite Incantatem is important to note. We're going to be using Finite to counter the charm I'm going to teach you today. Why do you think we will want to use Finite and NOT Finite Incantatem as the counterspell today?" Just a quick easy question.

ooc: I don't need a million answers to this one, I'll reply once I have a few that are right and move on with the lesson. So if there are already several posts with the answer, but you still want to post/show you're participating, you can go ahead and have your charrie taking notes/listening etc instead of responding with the answer.

First of all... SIR?

A slip of the tongue, surely, but SIR????????????

"5 points from Hufflepuff for RUDENESS and calling me SIR!" REALLY. She huffed a bit then addressed the answer attempt. "That's not quite the right answer."

"I wouldn't say a hundred times, but you're otherwise right." She nodded encouragingly.

"Incantatem, and no, ease of pronunciation has nothing to do with it."

"No, the counter-spells both work on the same spells, its just a question of how many at once, and how specific you can be. Finite allows you to be specific in what you target." She offered a clarification.

"Not all spells, since some are too strong or will only be reversed by a specific counter, but yes often finite incantatem can undo protective spells, but it would also target all the other spells in the area, as it is not selective about what it counters."

"Well, not actually while you're casting it. Finite is the one to target a specific spell, regardless of how long it has been applied. Finite Incantatem is more general."
-----------------

"Those of you who answered that Finite targets a specific spell on an object or individual and Finite Incantatem ends spell effects in the surrounding area are correct."

That hadn't been too painful, really.

"Today we're going to learn a Gripping Charm." She paused. "What do you know about Gripping Charms, what do you think they'd be useful for?"

Prehistoric.

She was getting a headache.

"The prefix 'pre-' is related." But not the 'historic' part. Seriously.
"Well, that's a good guess Mr. Agger. But incorrect." Still, at least he'd tried, she supposed. Althea nodded encouragingly nonetheless.

"The 'ap-' part of that word is a prefix which changes the meaning somewhat, but that was a very good guess and there is a relationship there." Althea answered.

"Generally, Miss Hollingberry, incantations are by nature a command." Professor Schirmer actually expected MORE of an answer from the young prefect. Well, if you raised the bar in her class you were expected to keep it up.

"Not quite what I meant by a related English word, Miss Wheatborn, but good try."

"Again, not quite what I meant by a related word." But you know. Good try and such.

"Should be easy enough for you to remember, then Miss Skylar." Althea answered, cheering up a little more at her answer. She wasn't going to go too much into detail about the Latin for the lesson, but it was useful when the students knew.

She listened to the Ravenclaw prefect and nodded at the 'pre' and the 'hend'. Hend was nice and obscure, but very correct. "Good logic, Mr. Uronen. And you can see how the English relates rather closely to the Latin in regards to the semantics."

Really? Perhaps we can use a gripping charm? Was that not the entire point of her questions ON gripping charms? Had the child not been paying attention?

"That's the Latin." She answered, keeping it brief. Own little world perhaps? Well she'd be watching.

"Absolutely right, Mr Escalante." Althea answered. The Slytherin boy got another smile of encouragement. "Prehension is a related English word."

"No. Incorrect." Althea answered shortly. What was with some of these answers?

"That's right." Althea answered. Close enough.

"That's the general gist of things, Miss Greingoth."

"We're not talking about what the charm does any more. We've moved on from that question, Mr. Vaughn." The Latin was close enough for the purposes of the charm though.
"Correct, Miss Fanster." Althea smiled at the Slytherin girl, obviously pleased.
"Useful when an incantation holds a related meaning, isn't it?" Althea nodded at the boy.
Nate got a nod too.
And another nod. Right.

Althea's eyebrows went up in tandem with Keefer's hands and she eyed him for a second until he explained himself. Oh. Better. "That's right." She smiled pleasantly at the Hufflepuff.

"Yes, that's the Latin."

"That's right, Miss Potter. That is an English word which is related, thank you."

"Yes, Comprehend is related. Good." She lifted her hand up though and gave the Ravenclaw a pointed look. Next time, she'd lose points.

"Yes, that's right."

"Yes it is. Rather fitting isn't it?"

ooc: I figured something like that. She couldn't NOT reply though

No answer to the question? Althea watched the Hufflepuff for a moment and then moved on to the next student.

"Yes it does." Althea answered.

"Right." Not very detailed but still right.

"Thank you for identifying the prefix." Althea answered, with a small smile. It was a start at least, and relevant.

"Yes that's right, similar meanings and similar sound." Althea answered.

"It makes it much easier to remember too." Althea commented.

"It does."

"Capturate is not an English word." Thea answered.
------------
Right... so.... learning now, yes?

"The wand movement for this charm is a twist and a tap. Refer to page 47 of Quintessence: a Quest if you need a reminder of how these two wand movements work. You may practise the wand movement now, and then the incantation, but not the two together as of yet. When you are practising saying the incantation, I'd like you to put your wand down on your desk. I'll give you a few moments to practice these, and then I will give you the next instructions."

OOC: Practice the wand movement OR the incantation separately but not together. Anyone actually casting the spell will get in trouble! I'll resume with the next part in around 9-10 hours from this post, and then we'll get to take them out to play a game

"There is a slight emphasis on the centre syllable, but its a fairly smooth incantation, one you should not over think. Prehenso." Professor Schirmer supplied.

"If it was at the same time, I would have told you so. Its a twist and then a tap. You can practice the tap on your desk." Professor Schirmer almost sounded nice about it. Well at least the kid was on task.

Althea watched for a moment, not quite approvingly, and then moved on.

"Its a twist and a tap, not a swish, dear."

"Good question, Mr Uronen. 2 points. And yes you pronounce the 'h'. Much like Incendio is to Incendiary, Prehenso is to Prehensile, as far as the influence of the English pronunciation goes." She nodded approvingly.

"Yes, just keep practising to get it to roll off the tongue smoothly. You'll get the hang of it."

She watched and then nodded. "Try using a little more of an elbow movement with the tap. Its a natural movement so you have to be careful not to force it, and with your wrist aligned such, there is less room for the tap." Althea suggested.
-----

"Alright everyone. We're going to go outside and get an opportunity to apply this spell very soon, but first I'd like to see if you've been paying attention.

First, I'd like for you to cast this charm on your hand. You'll know when it has worked because your hand will tingle a little bit, and if you run your hand along your desk, the wood will feel slightly more roughened. Don't feel bad if you don't get it right away. I'd like you to cast the charm on your hand and then after you feel the difference between the charmed hand and the uncharmed hand against the wood, I'd like you to cast finite to counter the charm.

Can I get an older student who already knows how to cast finite to come to the front of the class to demonstrate it, please?"
ooc: instructions:
1. cast prehenso on the hand your character is not using their wand with (fairly obvious... right?)
2. put your wand down and touch your desk with both hands and compare the different feeling between the gripping charm and how your hand usually feels on contact with the wood. take note of the tingling sensation!
3. cast finite on your charmed hand.

Older students: If you want to demonstrate finite, just RP coming to the front of the class and showing how to do it, no need to wait to get called on.

Younger students: It might be worthwhile to RP watching how to do finite and practising it too Just saying. *eyes house points*

Once you're charrie has successfully shown they can do this, they'll be allowed to go outside. There will be a thread for this, so simply wait for additional instructions from me. I'll post a link in the first post too.

This should take at least three posts! you have around 20 hours to do this. Other than that, this will be the end of the first part of the lesson.

Tayla smiled and nodded when the professor answered her question and said she could share a book.

"Oh no..." she sighed, upon hearing Professor Schirmer take points from Gryffindor because of little Lea Carter.

For the next minutes, she remained quiet, listening to the discussion and the students' answers, and taking down notes. Her head was filled with thoughts and she tried hard to stay attentive in class.

SPOILER!!: Tayla's Charms Notes

Charms Lesson 1

Charms - leaves alone the base object and gives its properties or changes behaviour
(unlike Transfiguration which changes what something fundamentally is)

*not necessarily seven types of spells (arbitrary)

3 main components of a spell:
Wand movement
Incantation
Intent - most important; some can cast spells without wand or words

Incantations
- have relationship with meaning and result
- often but not always based on Latin or Greek
- word/s used to cast a spell
- the way your thoughts channel the spell you are casting, whether you think about it or say it
- channels your intent, because of the links between the meaning and the intended outcome

*pronunciation important
*emphasis falls on second syllable if there are 2 or 3 syllables
*Latin and Greek languages don't change (dead languages) so words used are stable and meanings are consistent (unlike English and other languages which tend to change over time)

INTENT
- very important; influenced by emotion, focus, with or without words - or even with a word that is not the usual incantation

jinx = counter-jinx
curse = counter-curse
spell = counter-spell

stop spells when doing them:
- lowering wand (but only when bewitched items required the spell to be constantly applied and targeted)
- breaking concentration

stop spells on receiving end:
- Finite (specific) or Finite Incantatem (cover a whole area)
- potions more powerful than the spell
- Shield Charm (block spell from taking hold)
- dodging or physical barrier
- a series of spells

WAYS TO END OR NEGATE A SPELL:
1. Use of a specific counter-spell (e.g 'nox' to stop 'lumos')
2. Use of a spell that opposes the specific spell effects (e.g 'aguamenti' to put out a fire started by 'incendio')
3. Use of a generic counter-spell (e.g 'finite' or 'finite incantatem')
4. In some cases, the death of the caster
5. In some cases, lowering your wand and ceasing your focus
6. The use of potions to negate the effects in question (e.g Growth Charm countered by Shrinking Solution)
7. Preventing the spell from taking hold by blocking or warding against it
8. Wait for the spell effects to wear off on its own
9. Use a series of spells to negate composite spell effects

*not effective in all cases; Charms are, by nature, long-lasting

GRIPPING CHARM
- allows object to be more easily gripped
- discovered in 1875
- revolutionized the design of the Quaffle (allowed players to hold, throw, and catch the ball with one hand, without need for straps or finger holes)

Incantation: Prehenso (Latin; literally: grasp, catch, seize, or take hold)
Wand Movement: Twist and Tap

Tayla said "Prehenso" three times then practiced the wand movement. It didn't seem hard, but wondered if actually making the spell work would be. She was fairly confident about Charms anyway. It was her best subject after all.

She took her wand with her right hand and pointed it towards her left, saying the incantation and performing the wand movement. "Prehenso," she said.

Tayla's eyebrows furrowed. No tingling sensation. "Hmmm..." She must have done the wand movement incorrectly. She took out her book to review the movement ("Ah...wrong twist...") then practiced it again without words.

She closed her book again, cleared her throat, and with her wand pointing towards her left hand, she said "Prehenso" with no hesitation, determined to get it right.

Tayla smiled. She felt a slight tingling in her left hand. When she set her hand on the wooden desk, she felt the roughness Professor Schirmer meant. "Finite," she said. And the tingling and roughness were gone.

She knew she could do better and continued practicing.

He held his enchanted hand up for everyone to see it, then he pointed the wand directly at his palm and said the incantation very clearly, "Finite." Before returning to his seat he looked at Professor Schirmer and nodded.
Gwen raised her wand and did the twist and tap movement. "Prehenso." Her pinky finger twitched, but nothing happened. She repeated it. "Prehenso."
This time she was sure it had worked. Her hand tingled slightly. Following the Professor's instructions, Gwen touched her desk with both hands. Wow, she really did feel a difference!
After watching the older student do the Finite charm, Gwen pointed her own wand at her hand and said clearly, "Finite."
The tingling sensation stopped and her hand felt completely normal again.

Ira's hand was still tingling which certainly meant that her spell had been cast correctly. But now to make it stop! I have to use a finite charm. She looked over in her notes.

She pointed her wand at her wrist and said, "Finite!" and the tingling stopped! Thats great! I've got both the spells now! she thought to herself.

She looked around at the class to see who else were practicing and who were done. It seemed as if all were still practicing. Seeing them, Ira thought to herself, I'll just try both these spells once more.. I hope they are right this time too..

Thinking so, Ira tried again.

1 of 4 Amigos Don't underestimate me!

As instructed Justin took out his wand and with a twirl and tap on his left hand said, " Prehensio" He put down his wand and felt his desk with both hands. Whoa! It was quite rougher with his left than his right hand. He was elated that he had been able to successfully cast the charm. Now for trying out the finite charm to counter the original charm. At first he practiced it with out his wand " Finite, Finite!' Yup that was easy enough. So he picked up his wand and said cast the the counter charm as he tapped his left hand , " Finite! " Brilliant, The feeling in his left hand returned to normal. Justin smiled as he was able to pick up charms rather easily. Now ....To see if anyone was having difficulty with either charm. He scanned the classroom to see if anyone needed help.

They were practicing the charm on their hands? Okaaay.

First waiting for someone to show them how to cast finite, Nora held her wand and pointed it towards her right hand (yes, she was left handed), made the twist-and-tap movement and said "Prehenso." Now... was something supposed to happen? Yes, but she didn't feel anything. "Prehenso," she said again patiently, making a twist and tapping her hand.

She put her wand on the desk and then touched it with both hands to see if there was any difference... but no. Nothing. Absolutely nothing.

Another twist wand movement. Stella remembered having a bit of trouble last term getting that movement perfect, so she continued practicing the twist and tap movement for the Gripping charm even after they'd been told to move on to actually performing the charm on their own hands. She could wait a couple moments, and still manage to keep up after all. She wasn't unsure about the incantation, so it was just making sure she had the movement right.

Glancing up as Eino had stepped up to demonstrate Finite, however, she decided it was time to try and cast the charms herself. Stretching her left hand out in front of herself, she pointed her wand at it, then twisted it before tapping her palm. "Prehenso," she intoned, focusing her energy on what the charm was supposed to do and blinking as her hand started tingling. That wasn't as hard as I expected, she thought, simply looking at her hand as if it should appear differently before tilting it to run her fingers along the surface of the desk. It almost felt more like her hand was faintly sticky, rather than the wood being rougher, but she set her wand down long enough to replicate the movement with her right hand as well. It definitely was a different feeling.

Now back at her seat, Kurumi held up her hand and sort of wiggled her fingers, opening and closing her hand into a fist. The tingling and gripping sensation had been sort of surreal. If one were to use this charm on both hands and feat, would they be able to climb walls? Perhaps scale the castle?

Twisted and than tapping her hand once more as she repeated the spell, Kurumi found that this time there was no noticable effect. Well, that wasn't true. Her index finger and thumb were tingling and their touch felt more rough against the desk's surface, but the rest of her hand was unaffected. "Beginners luck," she laughed to herself as she glanced up to take a peek around the room.

Ah yes, Kurumi knew THAT sigh. It was a sigh that she herself had done one too many times. "Hey, don't get discouraged," she smiled, offering the girl a small wave. "You'll get it eventually. Maybe try making your tap a little more fluid and natural. I used to struggle with that bit too."

Now...back to her partially enchanted hand. "Finite," she said calmly with her wand pointed at her hand. Regular feeling returned to her fingers and she wiggled them just to be sure. Yep. Back to normal.

Taking a deep breath, Nora held her wand again, repeating in her mind that she could do this. She could do it, and do it right. This time concentrating even move on her hand, she pointed her wand towards it, made a twist, tapped, and said "Prehenso."

It... tingled.

Which only meant that it worked!

Just to be sure, she placed her palms on the desk and felt how her right hand was... uhm... nothing but awkward. So it worked.

Having no more questions, Hades took out his wand, twisted and tapped it on his left hand. "Prehenso," he said before putting down his wand. Then, he pressed both hands on the surface of the desk before trying to pull them closer to him. The tingling made him chuckle.

Ok. The feeling started to annoy him already. Hades grabbed his wand, pointed it towards his left palm. "Finite," he muttered. Uggh! Maybe he should relax his hand first before trying it again.

1. cast prehenso on the hand your character is not using their wand with (fairly obvious... right?)
2. put your wand down and touch your desk with both hands and compare the different feeling between the gripping charm and how your hand usually feels on contact with the wood. take note of the tingling sensation!
3. cast finite on your charmed hand.
Lewis knew how to perform the Finite spell but he really wasn't one to demonstrate it with a whole classroom of students watching him. Very much not. Thank you. So instead, he just practiced it once at his desk, muttering the incantation quietly to himself and accompanied it with the correct wand movement. He wanted to make sure he would be able to stop the tingling in his hand after all.

Now, onto the new charm. Clearing his throat Lewis said "Prehenso" twisting his wrist a little and then tapping his hand with his wand. HMM. He did feel SOMETHING but he was pretty sure that it wasn't exactly the tingling Professor Schirmer had been talking about. So. Once more. "PreHENso!" Repeating the wand movements, he flexed his hand a little involuntarily afterwards. It felt...different somehow.

Huh!

Gwen watched the older students as they demonstrated the two spells, Prehenso and Finite in front of the class. Prehenso... Twist and tap, then Finite... this shouldn't be so hard..., the third year told herself and decided she was ready to try. However, she looked back one last time at another student demonstrating, just to make sure she won't forget anything. Grabbing her wand, Gwendolyn pointed it to her left hand.

*ehem-hem* 'Prehenso!', the girl said loud and clear. *twist* aaand *tap* So this actually worked!?, she asked herself, while putting both of her hands on the desk. There really was a difference, so it had to be good, right? Riiiight?

‘Finite!’, Gwen pointed her wand again at her left hand. Grr. Why won’t it work!? ‘Finite!!!’, she said once again, loud and clear. There. All done! But maybe I would need more practice, the Ravenclaw thought.

Oooo an outdoor activity!

One could only wonder what it was and reminded of his answer on uses, Gideon wondered which side of the spectrum he himself had given would be the choice. Or if there was something else entirely that Professor Schirmer had planned. First they needed to practice putting the spell into action though. so the boy raised his left hand, wiggling it for a moment to prepare himself before casting. He might have considered going up himself, seeing as he was an older student and knew the countercurse. But with a number of fellow classmates already moving, including a few prefects, Gideon opted not to. No sense in all of them going up there to show it.

"Prehenso!" he cast, aiming his wand tip at his free hand while he twisted and taped as he spoke. It didn't feel right as he spoke so he tested it out on his desk as instructed. Like he guessed, it didn't feel any different then how it might have felt before he used the spell so he took it as he hadn't quite done it right.

Guess he'd have to do it again.

She sighed and leaned to the girl again. "Put your wand up like I am" she waited "Now twist it like this" she showed the girl slowly '"and tap the hand your wand is not in" she tapped her hand. "Now while doing this say Prehenso. Now watch as I do it all together." Minerva took her wand twisting it and tapping as slowly as she could "Prehenso" she felt the same weird feeling in her hand. She picked her wand back up "Finite" she said and her hand felt normal again. She looked at Laura and smiled "Now you try" she whispered.
Laura looked at the big girl and smiled, see if the Professor was like this the class would be more fun, but the Professor was too busy being grumpy and Laura didn't want to ask her for help so she was glad that this older Hufflepuff Girl was helping her.

Laura smiled as she watched the big girl do the spell this time more slowly, and this time Laura saw what she had to do, she twisted her wand and then gave it a soft tap on her other hand whilst saying. "Prehenso." her hand felt weird and she didn't like it. "Finite." Laura said and her hand felt fine.

Right. Put the hand on the desk. Lewis had been a little distracted by staring at his hand in wonder. It felt so WEIRD! Okay, now focus. Shaking his head slightly, he quickly put down his wand and then took a deep breath. He placed his left hand on the desk in front of him. Strange. Slowly moving it upwards a little, it felt as if his hand was some kind of magnet and the desk was made out of some kind of metal. Interesting.

Next he let his right hand join his left on the desk, and concentrated on how it felt on the wood. Well...it felt like a hand. Touching a desk. Duh! What had he expected. But now this weird tingling sensation on his other hand was even more intense. Lewis suppressed the urge to flex his hand again and instead leaned on both of them a little.

Time to try again and hopefully this time it would work out better for him. His wand still out and in his hand, Gideon mulled over the spell and wand movement in his head once more to try and make it seem more focused. "Prehenso!" he finally spoke out loud and clearly, casting the spell once more with a twist and a tap.

Now it didn't start out feeling any different to him but he wasn't going to just assume again that it hadn't worked. Swallowing and taking a deep breath, Gideon turned his palm down and moved it over the desk to test it once more. This time however, the action resulted in a tinging sensation that he felt throught the skin of his hand causing him to smile.

Success!

Nate put away his practice wand and picked his actual one up off of his desk. This time was for real. He extended his empty left hand out in front of him and aimed his wand carefully. With a twist of the hand, and a tap, he said, "Prehenso!"

At first his hand felt the same, but then again she hadn't told them to compare how their hands felt...

Lewis was still standing there, leaning forward on his two hands, pretty psyched by how different the two felt. He could already see himself doing that after class too, just for the fun of it. Yeah, he was a little weird but whatever. It wasn't like he would have anything better to do right?

After what felt like hours but was probably only a couple of minutes, his wrists started to hurt a little. Maybe he really shouldn't be doing that anymore. But it felt so...weird in a good way. Heh. Nonetheless, Lewis released the pressure on his hands by letting himself fall back into his chair again.

Raising his wand a little lazily he pointed it at his left hand again. Bye bye, weird feeling! "Reverto!" There you go. Now it was gone.

Right, try out the charm. Selena quickly scribbled down something and picked up her wand. She did a slight twist then tapped her hand, saying out loud, "Prehenso." Did it work? Selena waved her hand over the table. Right... now to place her hand on the table... did she want to do that? What if she messed- psht, she'd be fine. Selena placed her hand on the wood table, realizing how... completely odd it felt to touch a table like that. It was like mag- it was magic.

Let's see... twist and tap...twist aaaand tap...twist and tap, the Ravenclaw repeated the wand movements another time, just to make sure the spell would work this time better. Prehenso...Prehenso...Prehenso..Prehenso- I just can't do anything wrong. It is impossible to screw this up-yet, I'll probably find a way.

'Prehenso!', the Ravenclaw said, while doing the wand movements. As soon as she finished, she didn't feel any difference. Her left hand seemed perfectly normal. However, while placing both hands on the desk, Gwendolyn realized the spell worked. So I actually did something right, huh?, the third year asked herself and smirked.

Now that she felt that weird tingling in her right hand, she forgot for a moment how she was supposed to get rid of it and started to shake her hand, as if trying to shove away the feeling. But of course it didn't work. It felt even weirder.

But... ah. The finite thing.

Pointing her wand for the last time at her hand, she mumbled "Finite," and waited until the tingling eventually faded. Brushing her palms against the desk, she was glad to find that they both felt the same once again. She was so not trying that one on her hand again.

Louisa was about to volunteer and walk to the front and demonstrate but there were already students who'd done it so she stayed in her seat and wrote down some notes before putting aside her quill and parchment. She grabbed her wand, extended her left arm and opened up her hand. Standing still for quite few seconds, looking down at her pale hand. Since when were they allowed to practice magic on their own body parts? Gulp. Schirmer must be certain that nothing would happen though.

OKAY.

"Prehenso." Twisting and tapping her wand on the left open hand. The tingling started right away and it lasted only for a second. Louisa took a closer look at her charmed limb, hmm... it was the same color and no mutation happened thank Merlin.

Hope is the only thing stronger than fear.

Jezz went and did it again, "Prehenso." Gah! The numbing tangling sensation was irritating to say the least and she hoped that if she gave it time it would wear off. She flexed her fingers one at a time and realized that she had only managed to get it on two fingers and her thumb. Her pinky and ring finger were fine. "Finite." She said. Nope she was still tingling away. "Finite." Again nothing, she was still tingling. "Oh dear. Disaster had struck yet again." Of course it would. She was doing great for once and now....sigh.

"Alright everyone. We're going to go outside and get an opportunity to apply this spell very soon, but first I'd like to see if you've been paying attention.

First, I'd like for you to cast this charm on your hand. ooc: instructions:
1. cast prehenso on the hand your character is not using their wand with (fairly obvious... right?)
2. put your wand down and touch your desk with both hands and compare the different feeling between the gripping charm and how your hand usually feels on contact with the wood. take note of the tingling sensation!
3. cast finite on your charmed hand.

He quickly looked back up at Professor Schirmer and, after listening to the instructions, he jotted them down. He put his parchment and quill away, then rolled up his sleeves so they wouldn't get in the way. Next, he picked up his wand, and before practicing he pointed the wand at his sleeves and muttered "Lentesco" to prevent them from unfolding. Flopping sleeves were a nuisance and potentially a hazard, so he felt more comfortable without that to worry.

Once that was done, he checked to make sure they wouldn't bother him and proceeded to practice the spell. He open his left hand completely, and tightly gripping his wand with his right hand he twisted then tapped the opposite hand. "Prehenso."There was a light tingling sensation, which indicated his hand had been successfully enchanted, but to prove it, he ran his left hand along the desk. It was noticeably roughened, as the professor say it would, so it had worked.

Now that he had a charmed hand, he offered to demonstrate how to cast the Finite Charm. He put his wand down, raised his right hand, and when Professor Schirmer gave him permission he picked his wand back up and moved to the front of the classroom. He held his enchanted hand up for everyone to see it, then he pointed the wand directly at his palm and said the incantation very clearly, "Finite." Before returning to his seat he looked at Professor Schirmer and nodded.

Harvey picked up his wand and took a deep breath being nervous about this.. He did the wand movement *twist* and *tap* his non-wand hand "Pre-hen-so" his hand felt the same no tingling feeling that they were supposed to be feeling.. he then watched an older student go up and demonstrate the finite charm.. Harvey kept his eyes on him as he did this.. and watched him sit back down.. he then looked at his hand and tried again.. but without saying the incantation to make sure that his wand movements were correct!

*twist* and *tap*
*twist* and *tap*
*twist* and *tap*
*twist* and *tap*

Then once he was certain that he was doing it right again he this time said the incantation *twist* and he *tap* his hand "Pre-hen-so" he then felt his hand tingle and he knew that he had succeeded so he then put his wand down onto the table
