The charms classroom was clean and bright and ready for the first lesson of the year and Professor Schirmer was waiting at the front of the class for the students to arrive.
Was she in a good mood? Well she was ALMOST smiling, at least.
The desks are set up in the usual way, no funny business today.

ooc: sorry for the time conversion confusion O_O I do not know how I got it so messed up, I'm totally usually an expert. I blame posting the notice before I was awake.
Don't worry if you can't join in from the beginning, this lesson will last through the weekend and this first post will be updated as the lesson progresses.
Questions so far: What should firsties know about charms? What do we know about incantations? How do we make a spell and its effects cease? Why do you think we will want to use Finite and NOT Finite Incantatem as the counterspell today? What do you know about Gripping Charms and what do you think they'd be useful for? The gripping charm you will learn today has the incantation 'Prehenso'. Can anyone guess how the meaning of this incantation relates to its purpose? Can you think of any related English words?
ooc instructions for practising activity can be found here and here
Class is OVER but come and play CAPTURE THE FLAG! This will be your homework and the game is worth 20 points each!
Did the crazy lady just say what she thought she said, that they were going to cast the spell on their hands, why couldn't it be on like the Professor Hand surely she didn't expect them to do that.
She decided to do as the Professor said and practiced the tap on the desk. "Tap..Tap...Tap...Tap..." She was making a lot of noice when the wand hit the desk but it wasn't her fault she was trying to be quiet as she could but the desk was hard and wanted to make a noice.

"Good question, Mr Uronen. 2 points. And yes you pronounce the 'h'. Much like Incendio is to Incendiary, Prehenso is to Prehensile, as far as the influence of the English pronunciation goes." She nodded approvingly.
"Thank you, Professor." Eino said and returned the nod. He made a little note on the 'h' in 'prehenso' to note that it was, in fact, pronounced. There, now he wouldn't forget it. He quickly looked back up at Professor Schirmer and, after listening to the instructions, he jotted them down. He put his parchment and quill away, then rolled up his sleeves so they wouldn't get in the way. Next, he picked up his wand, and before practicing he pointed the wand at his sleeves and muttered "Lentesco" to prevent them from unfolding. Flopping sleeves were a nuisance and potentially a hazard, so he felt more comfortable without that to worry.
Once that was done, he checked to make sure they wouldn't bother him and proceeded to practice the spell. He open his left hand completely, and tightly gripping his wand with his right hand he twisted then tapped the opposite hand. "Prehenso."There was a light tingling sensation, which indicated his hand had been successfully enchanted, but to prove it, he ran his left hand along the desk. It was noticeably roughened, as the professor say it would, so it had worked.
Now that he had a charmed hand, he offered to demonstrate how to cast the Finite Charm. He put his wand down, raised his right hand, and when Professor Schirmer gave him permission he picked his wand back up and moved to the front of the classroom. He held his enchanted hand up for everyone to see it, then he pointed the wand directly at his palm and said the incantation very clearly, "Finite." Before returning to his seat he looked at Professor Schirmer and nodded.
She felt her wrist where she had tapped her wand.. it didn't seem any different. it was supposed to tingle a bit, right?
Still, she kept her wand aside, and touched her desk with both hands as instructed. It didn't feel any more rough for sure. So that meant her spell hadn't been cast correctly. This was not good! She had to do that spell good!
Sighing inwardly, again she picked up her wand and focused her mind on the task. She reviewed the spell again, first a twist and a tap, then Prehenso.. Alright.
She raised her wand up and twisted it to right and then tapped it against her left wrist. Then quickly, "Prehenso!"

Minerva watched as the Claw Prefect went up and demonstrated. He was good, but he was older. Her concentration was interrupted by tapping. She looked near her to see the first year at it again. She sighed and leaned over. "Will you please stop tapping your hand." she whispered. "You need to twist and tap your wand to your hand while saying the spell. Watch" Minerva took her wand and twisted then tapped her left hand "Prehenso" her hand started to feel weird. She put her wand down and touched the table with both hands. She smiled big, this was awesome. She could so feel the difference the wood was so rough with her left hand, but smooth with her right. What a great charm this was. She looked back at the first year and with her eyes said you try.

Big girl say what........... Seriously how was Laura suppost to remember all that when she was going so fast, it was a twist and a tap and then she had to say something. "What you on about?" Laura was confused.

Kurumi nodded her head in appreciation when the professor thanked her for helping Jezz. Kurumi had really taken to the first year and often kept at least one eye on her during lessons and not because she didn't think the first year lion was incapable of performing, it was done so in a big sister sort of way.
Kurumi faced forward again as class resumed and further instruction was given. She was momentarily distracted by someone tapping their wand on their desk. Turning around, she looked at the young Hufflepuff. "Could you please not do that, it is distracting." Hadn't they been listening when Professor Schirmer had said that concentration was important?
Returning her attention to her wand, Kurumi placed her left hand on the desk and spread her fingers wide, giving herself a big target to point at. "Prehenso," she said clearly while twisting and tapping her hand with her wand. Something felt...strange and reminded her of the feeling you get when part of your body is in the process of waking up after falling asleep. That heavy tingly feeling. She wrinkled her nose slightly. It wasn't a feeling that she liked very much, but she had to be glad she felt it now. It meant she had performed the spell properly. She sort of dragged her hand across her desk instead of running it across it, but the surface was rough as was to be expected. Thank Merlin. Kurumi had been afraid that she would have melted her hand or something since this was her first go at things.
Rising from her set, Kurumi stood in front of her side of the room and held her hand up while standing with her profile to the class so students could see better. "Finite," Kurumi said as she pointed her wand at her palm. The tingling sensation dulled and Kurumi touched her desk again to make sure that the charm had worn off, which it had. After offering Professor Schirmer and the class a quick bow, Kurumi returned to her seat to practice a bit more.

Laura watched as a Prefect did the spell and she smiled, for the first time this lesson she actually thought she might be able to do something, she thought about her hand before twisting her wand and then tapping it, hopefully that was right, well next was the saying of the spell. "Pre..Hen..So." or something like. "Prehenso." That was it surely, now she just had to think about putting it together but that would be harder to do.

Time to practice!
Raven casted the gripping charm to her right hand.
"Prehenso!" she twisted and tapped her wand to her right hand.
Now let she tried it whether her gripping charm was good or not.

Minerva pointed her wand "Finite" her hand felt normal again. She ran it across the desk yup back to normal then she looked at the first year again. She wanted to help the first year out, because she wanted to be a good role model for the younger students, but she didn't want to cost the house points for talking either. What should she do? She sighed and leaned to the girl again. "Put your wand up like I am" she waited "Now twist it like this" she showed the girl slowly '"and tap the hand your wand is not in" she tapped her hand. "Now while doing this say Prehenso. Now watch as I do it all together." Minerva took her wand twisting it and tapping as slowly as she could "Prehenso" she felt the same weird feeling in her hand. "Now once she feel a tingle in your hand put down your wand and touch your table to see if it worked." Minerva put both hands on the table feeling the difference. She picked her wand back up "Finite" she said and her hand felt normal again. She looked at Laura and smiled "Now you try" she whispered.

Ira felt her wrist.. still no tingle! She decided to try again.
Twist and Tap! Then "Prehenso!" she muttered with full concentration on the spell. Then suddenly her hand began to tingle a bit. So was she successful? She kept her wand down and touched her desk with both hands. The wood definitely seemed a bit rough to her left hand. Yayy! I've got it!
Then what to do? How to stop it? Oh yeah the finite spell. She saw two senior students demonstrate the finite charm. Okay.. she could do it now!
Taylor watched as one of the prefects from her house went up and demostrated. She then preceded twist and tap her wand on her right hand and said clearly, "Prehenso". There was a tingling feeling. Taylor thought Was that good?

Reason: forgot to put spell's name lol
Silvia rehearsed the wand movements a few more times before she pointed the wand at her left hand. Twist and tap, she thought, and as she tapped her hand she said "Prehenso!" Nothing seemed to happen; her hand didn't feel any different. Oh well, the first year thought. This is probably to be expected with my very first spell. And she continued to practice, focusing on getting the movements right.
Mom says I have no sense of direction, so I packed my bags and right.
Oakey picked up his wand and recited the spell Prehenso twisting then tapping his left hand. It felt strange, It could have been a tingle as the professor said, but to him it felt like a shiver.

TAylor put her wand on the table and ran her hands around the wood. She was surpised -despite being told- that the wood was rough with with her right hand but smooth with her left. She smiled but happened to noticed that a first year was having trouble. "Do you have your pronunciation correct? That might be why you are having trouble." Taylor smiled sweetly to the younger girl, hoping that the girl won't get annoyed at the advice.

As Professor Schirmer answered her earlier question, Beezus nodded and gave the Professor a small smile, indicating her gratitude for not scolding her and for emphasizing that she had understood what she meant.
She practiced the Prehenso incantation a bit more, "Prehenso..Pre-Hen-so.." She muttered under her breath. "Just a slight emphasis on the center syllable, Beatrice." she reminded herself.
Now, off to do the task. However, when she heard that they were going to perform the Finite spell after the Prehenso spell, she came into conclusion that she didn't know how to cast the Finite spell which meant that she was to wait until an older student would demonstrate it in front as the Charms Professor said.
............
Good thing though, that Eino was the first one to volunteer. The boy was in the same house as her and they were already somewhat acquainted. And so, when the Prefect returned to his seat, Beezus stood up, looked at the Professor Schirmer, and said "Professor, I'll just ask Eino to teach me the Finite Charm." Just a precaution in case the Professor would deduct points from her standing all of a sudden.
Then she headed over to the desk where the Ravenclaw Prefect was seated. She bent down, "Eino..please teach me the Finite Charm.." she plead, putting her hands together as she beamed.
Taylor picked up her wand again and tapped her right hand, "Finite." Feeling her hand go back to normal, Taylor sighed happily. She was relieved to have her hand back. She put her wand back down on the desk.
Butterfly attempted to try the spell after watching, she twisted her left right wrist while tapping the wand,"Prehenso.....Pre-Hen-so" She felt nothing happend and sighed.

Eino was practicing the Gripping Charm on his hand all over again, now that he had removed the charm, when a young Ravenclaw approached him. "Hello." He said suddenly turning around and recognizing the young girl as Beatrice. She seemed to be in some need of additional help and hoped Professor Schirmer wouldn't mind the fact that it would require some exchange of words. Hopefully it wouldn't be considered disruptive. "Of course I can." Was his enthusiastic reply, accompanied by a sharp nod.
He took his wand and turned towards her. "The wand movement is as simple as a point" He demonstrated by swiftly pointing his wand at his parchment and posing, like he was about to duel it. "That easy." He repeated as he readjusted himself comfortably in his chair. "Then, all you do is say the incantation." He instructed and turned all of his attention to the parchment. "Finite." He spoke loudly and clearly, maybe a tad too loudly. He looked at Professor Schirmer apologetically, then back at Beatrice. "Remember to concentrate on ending the previous charm. Concentration is key, after all."
He pointed his wand at his hand once again, twisted it, tapped it, and said: "Prehenso.". His hand began to tingle again, confirming the success of the cast. "Okay, now try to cast the Finite Charm on it." He said offering his bewitched hand. Maybe it would make her feel more comfortable if she had both hands? ...For balance? At least if something went wrong it wasn't her hand that would explode, or swell, or shrink, so that should be comforting.

She listened intently at the Prefect as he told her the correct wand movement for it. Just a point. "Okay..a point." she looked at his hand which held the wand while he demonstrated the proper wand movement for her to learn. She nodded at the Prefect, indicating that she got it.
Next, on to the incantation. It was just a plain 'Finite'. "Finitee..err--it was Finite right?" she inquired but didn't wait for his reply when she continued. "Finite.." Breathe. "Finite." It was always a hard work for her to learn incantations since she was never good at memorizing them.
She stared blankly as the Prefect casted the Prehenso spell on his own wand and told her to perform the Finite spell on it. What? His hand? "I...err--okay." she replied as she rolled up the sleeves of her uniform and pulled her wand out, pointing its tip on Eino's hand.
Okay..just a point Beatrice and a simple Finite incantation, she kept reminding herself.
"Finite." she muttered as she posed her wand a bit towards his charmed hand. "Well..did it work?" she inquired.
Jezz watched as Kurumi managed to get it all right on her first try and felt a little more nervous. She decided to play it safe though and practice at least one more time without her hand and the charm together. Twist and tap. Twist and tap. Twist and tap.
"Prehenso. Prehenso. Prehenso. Prehenso." Okay check. "Finite. Finite. Finite. Finite." Might as well practice saying that one too.
She could do this. She could make this work. She wanted nothing more than to make this work. Taking her wand in her right hand she placed her left of the desk in front of her. Merlin be with me, she thought. "Prehenso," twist and tap. Gah! Her hand was all tingling and she flexed her fingers hoping it would help it stop but it didn't. She ran both across the desk as instructed and could detect the difference.
Now to make it stop. Picking up her wand she pointed it at her hand, "Finite." Her hand stopped tangling at a slow like pace and she sighed in relief. It felt nice to feel her fingers again. She saw down and continued to practice. Her hand going all tingly one minute and then the sensation going away as she undid the charm.

Now, she tried to grip the desk with her hand. It was easily to grip it. Then she tried to grip the desk with both of her hand.

"So, the gripping charm was worked very well." she murmured

Eino nodded his way through all of the girl's insecurities until she finally attempted the spell on his hand. He watched her performance cautiously in case she accidentally made a mistake. When she cast the spell, Eino could feel a slight change as the tingling subsided then ended altogether. He turned to his hand and wiggled all of his fingers to demonstrate that it hadn't maimed or anything. "That was splendid!" He exclaimed with a small smile on his face. Beatrice had performed the Finite Charm flawlessly, so hopefully she wouldn't have much trouble casting it again in the future. "Very well done." He said encouragingly.

"There is a slight emphasis on the centre syllable, but its a fairly smooth incantation, one you should not over think. Prehenso." Professor Schirmer supplied.
"If it was at the same time, I would have told you so. Its a twist and then a tap. You can practice the tap on your desk." Professor Schirmer almost sounded nice about it. Well at least the kid was on task.
Althea watched for a moment, not quite approvingly, and then moved on.
"Its a twist and a tap, not a swish, dear."
"Good question, Mr Uronen. 2 points. And yes you pronounce the 'h'. Much like Incendio is to Incendiary, Prehenso is to Prehensile, as far as the influence of the English pronunciation goes." She nodded approvingly.
"Yes, just keep practising to get it to roll off the tongue smoothly. You'll get the hang of it."
She watched and then nodded. "Try using a little more of an elbow movement with the tap. Its a natural movement so you have to be careful not to force it, and with your wrist aligned such, there is less room for the tap." Althea suggested.
-----
"Alright everyone. We're going to go outside and get an opportunity to apply this spell very soon, but first I'd like to see if you've been paying attention.
First, I'd like for you to cast this charm on your hand. You'll know when it has worked because your hand will tingle a little bit, and if you run your hand along your desk, the wood will feel slightly more roughened. Don't feel bad if you don't get it right away. I'd like you to cast the charm on your hand and then after you feel the difference between the charmed hand and the uncharmed hand against the wood, I'd like you to cast finite to counter the charm.
Can I get an older student who already knows how to cast finite to come to the front of the class to demonstrate it, please?"
ooc: instructions:
1. cast prehenso on the hand your character is not using their wand with (fairly obvious... right?)
2. put your wand down and touch your desk with both hands and compare the different feeling between the gripping charm and how your hand usually feels on contact with the wood. take note of the tingling sensation!
3. cast finite on your charmed hand.
Older students: If you want to demonstrate finite, just RP coming to the front of the class and showing how to do it, no need to wait to get called on.
Younger students: It might be worthwhile to RP watching how to do finite and practising it too Just saying. *eyes house points*
Once you're charrie has successfully shown they can do this, they'll be allowed to go outside. There will be a thread for this, so simply wait for additional instructions from me. I'll post a link in the first post too.
This should take at least three posts! you have around 20 hours to do this. Other than that, this will be the end of the first part of the lesson.
Alyssa watched as the older students practiced the spell in front of the Professor. Once she saw it was done, Alyssa decided that she would practice the spell herself. So when it was her turn to demonstrate, she walked up to the Professor and taking her wand in her right hand, she pointed it at her left hand and in a twisting and tapping motion, she said the words,"Pre-Hen-so". She first didn't feel anything and thought that the spell hadn't worked until she started feeling a weird tingling sensation in her left hand. Alyssa first touched her left index finger with her thumb. It was still tingling.
Alyssa quickly holstered her wand and walked over to the desk. She first touched the desk with her right hand and then with her left hand. The Professor was right, there was a difference in the way the desk felt. When she touched the desk with her left hand, she could feel a tingling sensation and the wood felt slightly roughened.
Now it was time to end the sensation. Taking out her wand, she pointed it at her left hand, and said,"Finite". Slowly but surely her left hand started to lose its tingling sensation and after a few minutes it felt normal again. Alyssa tested it by touching the desk with her left hand and she was relieved to feel that the tingly sensation was gone.

Fiiiiinally!
She was getting a bit antsy waiting for permission to cast, though she did a good job of hiding it by mumbling the incantation repeatedly and casting her eyes over the class, a bit detached only because her mind wasn't strictly on helping other students. There were soo many other prefects in the lesson, and they seemed to be handling the students well enough.
Drawing her wand from her holster, she twisted her wrist and tapped the dark wood against her desk lightly in one swift movement, silent sparks flying out of the tip. She repeated the motion again over her spread left palm, this time pairing with the incantation. "Prehenso." Her fingers wiggled instantly at the tingling sensation, and she scrunched her face up slightly, rubbing her fingers together in attempts to remove the sensation.
No luck.
But... running her hand along the desk? That helped, and she'd done the spell correct, as their was a roughness that made gliding her hand across the desk a bit more difficult a task than before. Just to be sure though, she placed her wand in her lap and ran that hand along the desk as well. Much easier.
Volunteering to show the counter spell, even though a couple other prefects had already done so (one more wouldn't hurt, right?), she rose from her seat at the front of class, picking up her wand, and turned so that all the students could see her clearly.
Then Arya held up her left hand and pointed her wand at it, clearly speaking, "Finite." The tingling sensation was gone almost instantly and she rubbed her fingers against her wand wood. Yup, all gone.
Pleased with herself, she did a little twirl that had her gracefully returning to her seat, and went on with practicing the spell.

Ooh. Splendid, Eino said. She managed to cast the Finite spell splendidly. That meant she did good, correct? Beezus sighed with relief as she stood up and clutched her wand tightly on her right hand. Then she looked at the Prefect and bowed slightly, "Thank you very much Eino." she lilted as she gave him a bright smile. It really was a good thing that they had someone as good as him on the Ravenclaw house. Before returning to her seat, she added. "Oh! And Eino..if there's something I could do in return, please tell me."
Once she was seated, she took a deep breathe. It was time to put all those spells she practiced earlier into action. The Prehenso spell and Finite Spell. She repeated both for quite a few and reminded herself of the wand movement designated for each.
"Prehenso!" she muttered as she twisted and tapped her wand on her left wand since her right hand was holding her wand. At first she didn't feel anything in particular. She thought the spell hadn't turned out as she hoped but after a few seconds, she felt a tingling sensation inside her right hand. Was the spell finally a success?
She followed the tests that Professor Schirmer instructed them to do so as to ensure that they have done the Prehenso charm properly. After putting her wand down, she ran both her hands through her desk and yes! The left hand felt the desk more roughened. That means she got the Prehenso charm correctly. Now..off to the Finite spell. Moving a bit on her seat to make herself sit more comfortably, she pointed her wand at her left hand once more, "Finite." she said while posing the wand slightly. After a bit, the tingle had vanished and as she moved her fingers here and there, they were back to normal.
