The charms classroom was clean and bright and ready for the first lesson of the year and Professor Schirmer was waiting at the front of the class for the students to arrive.
Was she in a good mood? Well she was ALMOST smiling, at least.
The desks are set up in the usual way, no funny business today.

ooc: sorry for the time conversion confusion O_O I do not know how I got it so messed up, I'm totally usually an expert. I blame posting the notice before I was awake.
Don't worry if you can't join in from the beginning, this lesson will last through the weekend and this first post will be updated as the lesson progresses.
Questions so far: What should firsties know about charms? What do we know about incantations? How do we make a spell and its effects cease? Why do you think we will want to use Finite and NOT Finite Incantatem as the counterspell today? What do you know about Gripping Charms and what do you think they'd be useful for? The gripping charm you will learn today has the incantation 'Prehenso'. Can anyone guess how the meaning of this incantation relates to its purpose? Can you think of any related English words?
ooc instructions for practising activity can be found here and here

Arya had noticed that one of the little Puffs didn't know their house head, but she didn't supply a name. Not during the lesson she wouldn't. The professor seemed to be in a mind set for taking points if the lesson was interrupted again.
And she wanted to focus on the new spell.
After scribbling down a few final notes, she placed down her quill and flicked her wrist, giving her wand a slight twirl when it slid between her fingers. She quickly went to practicing the wand movements, since said wand was already in her hands. Hehe. A twist of her wrist and gentle tap against the table was easy enough, but for practice sake she kept at it a few more times, careful not to focus on the incantation as well.
Not until her wand was out of her hands at least, she re-holstered it for good measure, turning her arm so she could feel the dark wood against her arm as she spoke the incantation. "Prehenso..preeeheenso... prehensooo..." The word was nothing more than light mutters as her eyes had taken to traveling around the classroom, in case help was needed from her. "Prehenso."

Gwen turned to page 47 of her book and looked at the wand movements until she found the movements twist and tap. It didn't seem too difficult.
Taking out her wand, Gwen practiced the twist and tap movement, pressing her lips firmly together, finding the temptation of accidentally letting the incantation slip out challenging to resist.

Beezus felt like she was doing better with wand movement. At least she could see that she was twisting and tapping good. And that was head start.
Next was to practice the incantation. With wand on her hand, she opened her mouth to mutter the incantation when she remembered that they weren't allowed yet to say the incantation along with the wand movement so as quick as lightning she returned her wand in its holster while straightened up on her seat.
"Pre-henso..Pre.hen.so" She mumbled. And again.."Prehenssso..No, no..Prehen-so" Somehow, she was feeling like it wasn't right. Seeking out the attention of the Charms Professor, she raised her hand and asked, "Professor, do you say it like Prehen-so or Pre-henso or just Prehenso?" She hoped Professor Schirmer won't scold her for asking that.
Poor Puffs none of them were doing very well... in this class, Proffeser Schirmer seemed to ACTULLY be taking points she didn't really last year maybe one or two late firsties but she never took points for slip of the tongue and mindless firsties I mean to stop a spell you stand on it WHAATT? O_O
LuLu looked back up at the Proffeser and nodded in response
She opened it up at page 47 and read through it quite quickly... Then again to be sure! Twist and tap, Twist and tap, Twist and tap she played with her wand Twist and Tap! She motioned it over and over and over again with her wand... Twist and tap, Twist and tap... after she got used to it and did it soooo many times there was no possible way she could forget she put then put her wand down and just repeated it in her head
Nothing could have possibily been more bland but still it had to be done! Right LuLu sighed.. Again

Following professor Schirmer's instructions, Nora opened her textbook at page forty seven, although she was pretty sure of how to do the wand movements. Checking it, just to be sure, she held her wand and started with a few twists, then taps... and then together.

Right now, guess Kimalia better start the practicing. Setting her wand aside her desk, but close enough in case any sneaky students dared to take it.
"Pre-hen-so."
"Prehen..so."
"Prehenso"
Right, she committed it to memory before flipping through the textbook for the wand movement. Twist and tap. Kimalia briefly thought about casting a silence charm on herself temporarily to avoid the temptation on actually casting the spell, but figured that would only complicate things..
*Twis-oops, the wand slipped from her hands. The twisting was a little challenging seeing as her wand was more ideal to swish movements.
"Let's see, twist.." Another attempt brought her success! Yes, now tap.. oops it slipped just as she was about to tap it.
Third time's the charm, right? Hehe. *Twist* "Hmm, was a little slower than usual.." Now tap. *Tap* Okay, now once more.
*Twist* annnd *tap* Neat. Kimalia then still practiced a little while longer until the next set of instructions.

OOC: Practice the wand movement OR the incantation separately but not together. Anyone actually casting the spell will get in trouble! I'll resume with the next part in around 9-10 hours from this post, and then we'll get to take them out to play a game
She supposed she should start with the wand movement...she did find it more difficult to learn than the incantation anyway...and so, taking a moment to tie her hair into a ponytail, she reached into her bag for her book and turned to page 47. Right, twist and tap. She could do that.
She took her wand out of its holster and gripped it tightly as she rotated her wrist in a counter clockwise direction. That was outward, right?
Then..tap? What was she supposed to tap?
She looked around the classroom and found everyone else tapping their books and tables. Alright. Time to start tapping then she supposed. So, starting the wand movement again with the twist, she rotated her wrist at the outward direction then tapped the wooden table, repeating the process a few more times, just to make sure that she had it down up to the last tap.
After getting the last answer incredibly wrong, the third year couldn't wait for class to end. It was true, Charms was one of her favorite classes in the past two years, but now... eh... She felt like a first year again. No- at least when she was a first year, no one actually expected her to get all the answers right. Pfuah. She had to do something well 'till the end of the class... she just had to.
Taking her wand, Gwen decided to start practicing. Let's see... twist and tap. Twist...and tap. This isn't hard, but I'll find a way to do something wrong AGAIN, the Ravenclaw dramatized.
Now the incantation- 'Pre--hen--so... Pre-hen-so...Prehenso...Prehenso', she said and then waited for further instructions.
Laura stared at the Professor, she really didn't like this Professor much, she was only asking a question and she didn't want to lose any points for not tell her head of house why she lost points and she was going to it was because the Professor was a grumpy woman who doesn't like hugs, well or so it seemed.
Laura listened to what the Professor and then took her wand in her hand, so she had to twist and tap the wand. "Professor is that at the same time, or do I twist the wand first then tap in on something?"

Wand movement first....Kourtney flipped to the correct page and noted the wand movements that were essential to the spell. She raised her wand in her right hand and held it stationary before twisting her wrist to the right, almost as though she were unlocking a door. A quick tap followed the movement. Twist...and tap. Twist....and tap.
Simple enough. She practiced for a few moments before placing her wand back on her desk.
Now the incantation. Prehenso. Pre-hen-so. "Prehenso." She spoke quickly. "Pre-hen-so...Pre-hen-so...Prehenso."
Again, fairly simple. The incantation wasn't one that could trip the tongue, which she was grateful for. There were still some spells that she had learned that were quite a mouthful to say.

Alyssa listened to the Professor's instructions before she checked through her reference book for the exact wand movements. Twist and Tap. Taking out her wand, Alyssa practiced the movements. First a twist of her wand and then a tap. Twist and tap, twist and tap. Alyssa repeated the movements until she was familiar with them and then she laid down her wand, and practised on the incantation. "Prehenso, Prehenso.....Pre-hen-so....Prehenso". She made sure that her pronunciation was correct and that the emphasis was on the right syllable. Then she picked up her wand again and practiced the wand movements making very sure that she didn't say the incantations. Twist of the wrist and then tap of the wand. Twist and Tap. Twist and Tap.
Then placing her wand down again, she practiced the incantation again. "Pre-Hen-So...Pre-Hen-So" until she was familiar with the words and they rolled off her tongue easily.
Mike, first began to just say the incanantation, "Prehanso, Prehanso. I think I can get this part, no problem."
He then took his wand and book out, and began to read the instructions about how to perform the movements. Twist and tap, twist and tap. hmmmm, I think i got a little beat going on."
Mike started to move his shoulders, to the new beat he created "Come on now, twist and tap, twist and tap, everybody twist and tap, twist and tap. Uh huh, uh huh. Twist and Tap, twist and tap." He looks around, noticing a couple of stares are in his direction. "Sorry. I got a little carried away."
Mike starts to bounce to the new beat he has created in his head, and continues to practice the movements.
After a little while Mike puts his wand back in it's sling, and practices the movements with just his hands. He also says the incantation out loud. "Prehenso!!" he moves his hand in the movement, Twist and Tap.
Mike practices couple more times, hopefully, he won't make a total fool of himself during the real thing
Aurora bent to pick up her wand from the floor where she had dropped it. She was still mastering all these different wand movements...
Twist and tap... and again... and again...
She practiced the wand movements a few times until she was confident that she could actually do it without dropping her wand, then she put her wand down on the table and began to practice the incantation.
"Prehenso... Prehenso... Prehenso... Prehenso..." Hmm, any of those sound right..? "Prehenso." There, that sounded better. So, she had the pronunciation right, and the wand movements... Eeeek... now they would have to try actually doing the spell... not her strongpoint... Aurora carried on practicing whilst she waited for Professor Schirmer to carry on.

Sierra looked down at her wand for a little longer. The positioning of her wrist was still awkward for her, but she could always practice the movements again sometime later. Right now, before the lesson moved on, Sierra wanted to get a feel for the incantation, too. So she pushed her wand back into its holster, just to make extra sure she didn't accidentally cast, and then opened her mouth--"Pre-hen-so!" she said.
Luckily, the sounds came quite naturally out of her mouth, so now all she had to do was blend them together. "Prehenso!" she said again. "Prehenso!" Well, that hadn't been so hard. Deciding that she needed more practice with the movements than she did the incantation, Sierra flicked her wand out once again. She turned back to her textbook and began rereading the part that showed how to do a good twist and tap.
After having looked up the wand movements, Silvia pulled out her wand and began practicing. Twist and tap...twist and tap... This didn't seem too difficult, she thought. Twist and tap...
A few minutes later she set her wand down. "Prehenso," she said, slowly at first to make sure she had the pronunciation correct. "Prehenso...Prehenso..."
Jordan whipped out his wand, excited to be one step closer to doing magic once more. He began practising the wand movement, being careful not to say the incantation at the same time, he didn't want to get into trouble.
Twist and Tap!
Twist and Tap!
Twist and Tap!
He grinned, feeling good that he had successfully done the wand movement. Now for the incantation, what was it? Oh, thats it! Prehenso!

Prehistoric.
She was getting a headache.
"The prefix 'pre-' is related." But not the 'historic' part. Seriously.
"Well, that's a good guess Mr. Agger. But incorrect." Still, at least he'd tried, she supposed. Althea nodded encouragingly nonetheless.
"The 'ap-' part of that word is a prefix which changes the meaning somewhat, but that was a very good guess and there is a relationship there." Althea answered.
"Generally, Miss Hollingberry, incantations are by nature a command." Professor Schirmer actually expected MORE of an answer from the young prefect. Well, if you raised the bar in her class you were expected to keep it up.
"Not quite what I meant by a related English word, Miss Wheatborn, but good try."
"Again, not quite what I meant by a related word." But you know. Good try and such.
"Should be easy enough for you to remember, then Miss Skylar." Althea answered, cheering up a little more at her answer. She wasn't going to go too much into detail about the Latin for the lesson, but it was useful when the students knew.
She listened to the Ravenclaw prefect and nodded at the 'pre' and the 'hend'. Hend was nice and obscure, but very correct. "Good logic, Mr. Uronen. And you can see how the English relates rather closely to the Latin in regards to the semantics."
Really? Perhaps we can use a gripping charm? Was that not the entire point of her questions ON gripping charms? Had the child not been paying attention?
"That's the Latin." She answered, keeping it brief. Own little world perhaps? Well she'd be watching.
"Absolutely right, Mr Escalante." Althea answered. The Slytherin boy got another smile of encouragement. "Prehension is a related English word."
"No. Incorrect." Althea answered shortly. What was with some of these answers?
"That's right." Althea answered. Close enough.
"That's the general gist of things, Miss Greingoth."
"We're not talking about what the charm does any more. We've moved on from that question, Mr. Vaughn." The Latin was close enough for the purposes of the charm though.
"Correct, Miss Fanster." Althea smiled at the Slytherin girl, obviously pleased.
"Useful when an incantation holds a related meaning, isn't it?" Althea nodded at the boy.
Nate got a nod too.
And another nod. Right.
Althea's eyebrows went up in tandem with Keefer's hands and she eyed him for a second until he explained himself. Oh. Better. "That's right." She smiled pleasantly at the Hufflepuff.
"Yes, that's the Latin."
"That's right, Miss Potter. That is an English word which is related, thank you."
"Yes, Comprehend is related. Good." She lifted her hand up though and gave the Ravenclaw a pointed look. Next time, she'd lose points.
"Yes, that's right."
"Yes it is. Rather fitting isn't it?"
ooc: I figured something like that. She couldn't NOT reply though
No answer to the question? Althea watched the Hufflepuff for a moment and then moved on to the next student.
"Yes it does." Althea answered.
"Right." Not very detailed but still right.
"Thank you for identifying the prefix." Althea answered, with a small smile. It was a start at least, and relevant.
"Yes that's right, similar meanings and similar sound." Althea answered.
"It makes it much easier to remember too." Althea commented.
"It does."
"Capturate is not an English word." Thea answered.

Well then. On to wand movements. Ellie pulled her wand out of her robe and, careful not to say the incantation yet, practiced.
"Twist and tap, Ellie mumbled quietly as she did the wand motions. She repeated those words quietly to herself and moved her wand about until she believed she had mastered the movements.
Then she put her wand away for safety precautions. "Preeehensooo..." Ellie wrote down the charm in her notebook. "Prehenso. Prehenso." Because talking to yourself was always fun.
LuLu placed her wand carefully at the end of her table and looked at the incantations carefully in the book "Pre-hen-so... Prehenso.. PRE-hen-so.. Prehenso,"she smiled to herself all seemed to be in shape

Note-taking furiously, the Gryffindor looked up when Professor Schrimer said they would be practicing. He hadn't performed a charm in quite some time, and this would be his first, in a lesson, of the term.
Auggie set his wand down on the desktop, deciding he would practice the incantation first. He looked at the written word on his parchment and then began to pronounce it. "PRE-hen-SO."
Not so hard. "Prehenso." he said it all together a few times. Easy enough when it came to incantations at least.
Now for the wand movement. Turning in his textbook to the pages suggested by the Professor the boy studied it for a few moments before picking up his wand again. Twist.
....
Tap. Wait not so long of a pause between the. Twiiiiist and tap. There we go.
"Should be easy enough for you to remember, then Miss Skylar." Althea answered, cheering up a little more at her answer. She wasn't going to go too much into detail about the Latin for the lesson, but it was useful when the students knew.

Selina smiled at her Charms Professor when she grew cheerful due to Selina's answer. When it came to Latin Selina typically always excelled and she was glad that her Professor took note of the fact that she knew the Latin. Honestly, she had to thank the Aenid. Translating that monster helped her with her Latin more than any other tool in the amazingly rich language.
Listening up to her Professor's instrutions Selina drew out her wand and did what she needed. Her wind lightly twisted and then she did a quick tap at the end. She repeated the process over and over again until she felt positive about her work.
Taylor first practiced the twisting and flicking movement then after she think she got it memorized she put her wand on the desk and started praticing the word, "Prehenso prehenso prehenso....."
A ship in harbor is safe — but that is not what ships are built for.
Twist and tap. Twist and tap.
Victoria took out her wand first to mirror the correct movement of this incantation first. Twist and tap, twist and tap. Victoria did it several times before reassuring that she had done it the proper way.
“Pree-hen-so” Victoria now tried to practice saying the incantation. “PrE-hen-So…prehenso.” Victoria has the urge to try the whole thing together. But dared not to at the thought of she might get into trouble.
