The charms classroom was clean and bright and ready for the first lesson of the year and Professor Schirmer was waiting at the front of the class for the students to arrive.
Was she in a good mood? Well she was ALMOST smiling, at least.
The desks are set up in the usual way, no funny business today.

ooc: sorry for the time conversion confusion O_O I do not know how I got it so messed up, I'm totally usually an expert. I blame posting the notice before I was awake.
Don't worry if you can't join in from the beginning, this lesson will last through the weekend and this first post will be updated as the lesson progresses.
Questions so far: What should firsties know about charms? What do we know about incantations? How do we make a spell and its effects cease? Why do you think we will want to use Finite and NOT Finite Incantatem as the counterspell today? What do you know about Gripping Charms and what do you think they'd be useful for? The gripping charm you will learn today has the incantation 'Prehenso'. Can anyone guess how the meaning of this incantation relates to its purpose? Can you think of any related English words?
ooc instructions for practising activity can be found here and here
Class is OVER but come and play CAPTURE THE FLAG! This will be your homework and the game is worth 20 points each!

They were going to learn a spell? Good! And they'll be learning that outside? Way better!
Immediately, she answered. "No more questions Professor Schirmer." She didn't thought that this term's first Charms lesson would be this exciting. Because well..she was feeling excited.
And as because they were going outside, the Ravenclaw girl placed returned her things inside her bag.
"We're going to learn a spell next and then we shall go outside and... apply it." Althea informed them.
"Are there any questions before we move ahead?"
Desiree shot a glance at the girl who lost them points, but let it go. Because her attention was put on something more important, they were going OUTSIDE! And learning a new spell! She could hardly contain her excitement. In answer to her question Desiree shook her head slightly, nope she didn't have any questions, except when could they start?
Ira watched others answer and jotted down the points discussed by the professor. Then came the good part!
New Spell! that was interesting! And outside? Why? What is it about exactly? Anyways, it was better than sitting in classroom! "No questions, professor" she said and gathered all her strewn things and put them in her bag.
Kennedy scribbled down the notes he knew were going to be important in the future, and even though he knew some of them, it was always good to have them in notes for if he ever forgot.
He shook his head at the professor's next question. He didn't have any, but he WAS curious as to what they were going to do outside. Where they going to charm trees? Go into the Forbidden Forest?
"We're going to learn a spell next and then we shall go outside and... apply it." Althea informed them.
"Are there any questions before we move ahead?"
Cass scribbled down the answers and the explanations as Professor Schirmer continued on discussing, only stopping for a few seconds to flex her fingers. She wasn't really a fast writer, and all this was making her fingers sore. Owww.
The Slytherin then stopped scribbling and looked up in surprise. They were going outside? For real? Well, that seemed fun! and they were going to learn a new spell too. Well, duh, you would need to learn a spell fist before you can practice, right?
She shook her head 'no' as the Professor asked if they had any further questions and waited patiently for this new spell of theirs. Yay! Finally, wandwork!
"As many of you have said, with incantations there is a relationship with meaning and result. Incantations are often Latin or Greek based but not always. They are the words or word we use in order to cast a specific spell." Althea began.
"The pronunciation of any one incantation is very important. And sometimes the pronunciation doesn't reflect the root of the word as well as we might expect, or follow particular grammar rules. However you'll often find the emphasis falls on the second syllable if there are two or three syllables in the incantation." The professor continued and paused to allow for the students to catch up.
"As some of you mentioned," And she nodded at Miss Stewart-Quinn, "The incantation is the way your thoughts channel the spell you are casting, whether you think about it or say it, the incantation channels your intent, because of the links between the meaning and the intended outcome."
"This is a very important point." Althea said, after young Eino had finished speaking. "Latin, and Ancient Greek, and other ancient languages used for forming incantations, are not growing and changing the same way as English or other modern tongues. This means that the associated meanings are stable and our understanding of these meanings remains consistent."
So write that down and all.
"2 points, Mr Uronen for bringing that up." She added, almost absently.
"We can talk about it further later if you like. Do feel free to stay after class, I can help you then."
"That's true, at least for learners. I could, for instance, point my wand at something and say turn green, and have it turn green if I also concentrated on the appropriate incantation. To all intents and purposes that would be non-verbal magic." Althea said.
The professor nodded at the question.
"Societies without links to Latin or Ancient Greek are more likely to develop spells that have incantations based on other languages. However, where the language is still in use, it is less common as the meanings can continue to change. Where a language is more nuanced and subtle, or where the meaning is conveyed as much with how words are said, and who says them- as rich as such languages may be- they are less effective for spell-making." Althea answered, giving a bit of detail.
"A stable semantic relationship between the incantation and the intended spell result is necessary for a spell to be memorable and effective. And too, where spells already exist, why seek alternatives just because the language which forms the root of an incantation is unfamiliar? They start out unfamiliar for most of us, which is the point of learning after all."
While she listened to the girl's whole answer, she only responded to the last part specifically. The rest had been addressed in her response to the students as a whole.
"You're thinking," Which she liked, "But incantations have a semantic relationship with the associated spell. It is the deciding factor not only in how they are chosen, but in allowing you to focus your magic, and of course remember the incantation and which spell it goes with."
Much better, Head Boy.
SPOILER!!: Kurumi, Louisa and Eino
"In point of fact," Althea began, after listening to the students, her eyes focusing on Kurumi, "The risk of just saying a word that happens to be an incantation and causing a spell to happen is slight, and it does depend greatly on what intent you hold in your mind. For instance if there was a spell where you could start a fire by saying 'fire', and your mind happened to be full of anger or passion or other fiery thoughts, then you COULD possibly cause a bit of a fire as a result, if that intent is driven by your emotions, and that would be dangerous.
Likewise if you were talking about a spell and thinking about that spell while you said the incantation, there'd be a risk of accidentally casting it before you meant to - a big reason why I do NOT allow students to practice before instructions have been given, and why I prefer wands to stay down or holstered until directed- but that would mean you had the intent in your mind.
But there does have to be intent behind it. Whether it is directed and concentrated focus such as you learn to apply in class, or undirected, and emotion-driven intent such as children often show as their first indication of magic. If you have a magical association with an incantation, you might subconsciously latch onto that and have your intent be driven by those associations. Like the 'Pack' example, or even 'Point me', which are both incantations in English, but the intention and the knowledge of the semantic relationship would have to be present.
In short, it is possible, and it is one of the reasons some words would not do, but the other factors, intent and wand movement would come into play quite heavily. There would still need to be an imperative behind it."
Soo... don't wave your wand around while having a heated conversation with a friend. It was a bit like thinking about the Elephant in the room when you were trying to ignore it.
"5 points from Slytherin for being late to my lesson." The professor said immediately.
Ooc: Please read the Charms Code of Conduct. Once the class has begun, you don't post arriving! This is the case in all subjects, just like in real life you have to be on time. If you're not there at the start in our RP lessons, you just pretend like you were.

Sammy was glad that he had contributed...and glad that he had decided to listen when Wally droned on about charms. He took notes as fast as he could, but he was sure he missed some stuff. He hoped it wouldn't be necessary to remember everything because that was a lot of information. The young first year grinned widely when he learned they were going to do a spell. He couldn't wait. He shook his head no and waited to be told what to do next.
Learning a charm and applying it outside? Prue was somewhat concerned, hoping for the best. She liked the theoretical side of things but the practical would definitely prove to be harder! Jotting down a couple of things she dropped her quill, sitting with her back a bit straighter while she waiting to find out what was happening next.

Alyssa quickly jotted down Professor Schirmer's answers to the questions she had posed the class in her journal. The Professor had mentioned that they would be going outside to practise a spell. She couldn't wait for the practical part of the class to start.
"We're going to learn a spell next and then we shall go outside and... apply it." Althea informed them.
"Are there any questions before we move ahead?"
Melanie shook her head in response to the question, anxiously awaiting what spell they would be learning. It only heightened her curiosity when the professor said they'd be going outside. It must be some kind of spell for them to have to go outside! Melanie perched on the edge of her seat in anticipation.
Charms? Outside? Wow, this class more exciting than she could have hoped for!
Gwen's fingers enclosed impatiently around her wand, which was in the pocket of her robes, wondering which Charms they'd practice.
"We're going to learn a spell next and then we shall go outside and... apply it." Althea informed them.
"Are there any questions before we move ahead?"
As soon as Professor Schirmer said they were going outside to practice, Sophie smiled excitedly and wrote her notes faster. "No, ma'am, no questions!" she said enthusiastically. "Noo questions!" she thought to herself. She always liked the practical part better than the theory part.

After she'd finished her own answer, Stella had been studiously taking notes. Nothing was necessarily new to her, but having it all written down wasn't a bad idea. It refreshed her memory, at least, and writing the information down just made sure she knew it even better. She'd glanced up again from her notes as Professor Schirmer said they'd be going outside to practice the spell they learned, however. Hmm, she thought, wondering what they were going to be learning. Something that they needed to be outside for, obviously.
She didn't have any questions, though, or at least none that wouldn't be answered anyhow. So she simply shook her head as the professor asked, waiting for the lesson to continue. As long as she didn't get distracted, things would go fine.

Zhenya wrote down everything in her book with her favourite Quill. There was something she was really curious about but she wasn't sure if now was the place, but she asked anyway, "Professor, I'm not sure if this is the right time to ask this, and I apologise if it isn't, but I've been curious about how spells are made... do people just somehow make them up or are they more tweaked from existing spells? But how did the first spells come about?" she asked. This question had been one she had been thinking about for years but never thought to ask it.

Laura looked at the Professor and raised her hand. "I've got a question Professor, if we accidently break something or someone when we practice the spell will we be in trouble or will it be okay since it was an accident." Laura smiled, she didn't want to get into trouble if her wand didn't work, she hadn't had the M.O.T done on it yet, she had only just got the wand and so she hadn't had time.
"We're going to learn a spell next and then we shall go outside and... apply it." Althea informed them.
"Are there any questions before we move ahead?"
Daisy grinned, happy they were going to do some magic now. She pulled out her wand and laid it on the desk, ready to do some charms. Looking round at the first-years, she couldn't help smiling. They seemed so excited about learning their first charm...

Kendra finished scribbling notes down furiously, filling up the piece of parchment on the desk in front of her. She had written down most of the important points of the lesson so far, as her intuition told her. She didn't understand much at the moment, but this was only her first lesson. Hopefully it would become easier.
She looked up when the professor spoke again. Learning a new spell? Excitement filled Kendra and her eyes lit up. Yes. She couldn't wait. She loved learning new spells.
LuLu at the ones that lost points at least it wasn't Ravenclaw right! She gave a short smirk to herself after looking at them Poor kid
LuLu walked on yay down to the real buisness the spells, Based on her answer she had no idea what she said she bit her lip all she wanted was yes or no question from her... She was only thirteen how was she supposed to understand somthing like that... she'd have to think about it ''No proffeser no further questions,'' she replied bowing her head down saying it more to herself than the Proffeser

Reason: I have to finish I pressed done too early
Kacie had yet to say an answer just yet, which was kind of strange when she was a very outspoken and hyperactive kid. She looked around the room as so many other students answered the question the Professor asked. Charms... Incantations... There was so much information being said that if felt like she was swimming in it. If this was how all classes would be she would certainly get use to it. She wasn't sure what she could possibly add to what others had said, so she waited for another question to jump into action.
The moment Professor Schirmer said that they would be doing a spell next, Kacie squealed. A spell! A spell! A spell! A spell! A spell! YAY A SPELL!!!! It was a very first spell so of course she was excited. How could she think of any question she might want to ask at a time like this, well there was one. What spell would they be doing? Kacie looked ready to burst debating on whether or not she should ask it or not because she really really really wanted to know. She didn't think she could wait until they got outside to learn which spell it was, was no one as curious as she was?
"Which spell? Will it be hard?" She suddenly blurted out. There she asked and felt so much better after, like the question had weighed a heavy burden on her chest that was finally lifted. When she got this excited, it was hard not to get a head of herself. Maybe it was a little to bold to ask, knowing the professor would get around to tell them when she was ready and when everyone was finish asking questions.
Adeline looked around. She had seen that word before in one of her new books her mother had bought her before she had left for Hogwarts. But she didn't know what it meant at all so she was totally and utterly clueless to really all of this. She had never felt that way before in her eleven years of life never. She didn't know how to feel about this. "I don't know." She muttered to herself.

Well...they are going to outside to go and try out some new spells. That was great.
Tiffany quickly jointed down the notes. She replied excitedly,"No questions, professor,"She was as anxious as those first years, couldn't help waiting. Actually she should not be like that, but she just couldn't cover her excitement up.
