The charms classroom was clean and bright and ready for the first lesson of the year and Professor Schirmer was waiting at the front of the class for the students to arrive.
Was she in a good mood? Well she was ALMOST smiling, at least.
The desks are set up in the usual way, no funny business today.

ooc: sorry for the time conversion confusion O_O I do not know how I got it so messed up, I'm totally usually an expert. I blame posting the notice before I was awake.
Don't worry if you can't join in from the beginning, this lesson will last through the weekend and this first post will be updated as the lesson progresses.
Questions so far: What should firsties know about charms? What do we know about incantations? How do we make a spell and its effects cease? Why do you think we will want to use Finite and NOT Finite Incantatem as the counterspell today? What do you know about Gripping Charms and what do you think they'd be useful for? The gripping charm you will learn today has the incantation 'Prehenso'. Can anyone guess how the meaning of this incantation relates to its purpose? Can you think of any related English words?
ooc instructions for practising activity can be found here and here

Don't feel bad if you don't get it right away. Can I get an older student who already knows how to cast finite to come to the front of the class to demonstrate it, please?"
ooc: instructions:
1. cast prehenso on the hand your character is not using their wand with (fairly obvious... right?)
2. put your wand down and touch your desk with both hands and compare the different feeling between the gripping charm and how your hand usually feels on contact with the wood. take note of the tingling sensation!
3. cast finite on your charmed hand.
Older students: If you want to demonstrate finite, just RP coming to the front of the class and showing how to do it, no need to wait to get called on.
Younger students: It might be worthwhile to RP watching how to do finite and practising it too Just saying. *eyes house points*
Once you're charrie has successfully shown they can do this, they'll be allowed to go outside. There will be a thread for this, so simply wait for additional instructions from me. I'll post a link in the first post too.
This should take at least three posts! you have around 20 hours to do this. Other than that, this will be the end of the first part of the lesson.
So it's twist and tap, right and then Prehenso. Jonathan took his wand out and began practicing. If their is one thing he was not good at Charms, it was the pronouncing of the hard spells. He was okay with some spells such as the Expelliarmus or Diffindo. But Prehenso was a bit difficult to pronounce or maybe at least get the exact intonation of it. Prehenso... Still, Jonathan was not such a bad learner so he can manage.
Jonathan finally twisted and tapped and "Prehenso" okay, that was good practice. It's not that hard as he imagined it to be. Jonathan practiced more until he finally got the hang of the wand movement and of course the spell.
Now, he is ready to do the activity. So he leveled his wand with his left hand. It was easier that way. He did a twisting motion first, followed by tapping his left hand. "Prehenso" he uttered. Then suddenly, he felt a rather strange feeling. His eyes widened a bit as he stared at his left hand. Merlin, he's happy that the spell work, he finally know that this was a successful activity but the tingling feeling was a bit distracting and quite frankly not as comfortable as he imagined it to be.

After watching the Ravenclaw prefect demonstrate Finite, Elise nodded, keeping all the pictures in her head like only an artist could. Fin-ite. Simple.
Elise blinked. They were practicing already?
Not wanting to be left behind, she tried the movement once more before deciding to do it. Wand in her left hand and right hand in front of her, she twisted it, but the incantation didn't seem to come to her.
Pre... Pre-something? Oh, right. Prehenso.
Twisting the wand anti-clockwise, she tapped it on her non-dominant hand. "Prehenso," she said. Her voice was soft, it always was.
She could feel something different in her hand, but she was sure it wasn't tingling. Trying again, she took in a deep breath.
Twist. "Prehenso." Tap. Something changed. Her hand felt... weird. Tingly and such. Shudder.

Hannah was glad that an older student went up to the front of the class to show them because she was sure that she would need some extra practice before she would be ready to perform the spell. She watched an older Gryffindor for awhile and then decided it was worth a shot. Ok finite fi-ni-te she sounded it out to herself. "Finite."No, no that wasn't right focus Hannah she told herself. You can do this. "Finite." She said perfectly. Whew, that was excatly it. She watched the wand movement that the older student did and practiced that as well. There wasn't much to it it looked like concentration was they key point. She practiced for awhile just to make sure she felt comfortable.

Alright, now that beginner's luck was out of the way and she hadn't performed the spell properly, it was about time that she got this spell down, yes? Kurumi certainly thought so. Kurumi cracked her knuckles and shook her hands out for a moment before picking her wand up again. With another twist and a tap, Kurumi spoke the incantation. "Prehenso." The tingling sensation was back in her left hand and she promptly set her wand back down on her desk.
Relaxing her shoulders a bit, Kurumi placed both hands on the desk and slowly moved them downwards to feel the difference in their touch and a smile appeared on her face. How did that expression go? Third time's the charm, was it? Kurumi then picked her wand back up again, pointed it at her charmed hand, and cast Finite. After testing both hands on the desk again to see that they were back to normal, Kurumi folded her hands on her lap and awaited further instruction.

Hannah felt confident with all of the practicing that she was doing that she would be able to successfully complete this task. Hannah let the class fade from her mind. It was just her their with her wand. She took the wand in her right hand and pointed it to her left hand. With great focus she twisted and tapped her wand hand while she clearly said "Prehenso." Suddenly she felt a tingly sensation she couldn't believe that she had actually gotten it right on the first try. Maybe all of her practicing really did pay off. She felt comfortable with this spell though it was finite that she was worried about.

Harvey had successfully managed the gripping charm on his hand and had felt that tingling sensation they were supposed to be feeling he liked the feeling.. but he knew it was only because of the charm.. and he knew that once he had Finite'd his hand then that feeling would do away..
Harvey then put both his hands on the table and he felt a definite difference between the two hands.. and he still felt that tingling feeling as he proceeded to run his hand over the table.. and he felt the wood feel roughened with his charmed hand just like the professor said it would.. so he knew that the charm had worked on his hand so he was happy that it had worked..

Hannah could already feel the tingling sensation in her left hand she had felt that as soon as she cast that spell. She layed both of her hands on the table and moved them back and forth. It was crazy to feel two totally different things. It was like night and day. Her right hand glided so smoothly without any problem whereas her left hand felt rough against the table and she couldn't move it around so smoothly it was almost as if she had a good grip on the table. This was too cool she thought to herself. Although she had to admit that she didn't too much care for the tingling sensation in her left hand.
"Okay I got this no worries," Jezz muttered to herself in a pep talk kind of way. "Finite," she said. She placed both hands on the desk and ran the over the wood and gave a sigh of relief when it all felt the same. Picking her wand up she took a deep breath, "Prehenso." Numb tingling feeling. She ran bother hands and found it was her whole hand this time. "Finite." Run both hand on the desk and they were the same. Finally. Accomplished is what she was.

Minerva smiled at Laura "Very good, see your doing it, just make sure you touch the table with both hands to see the difference." Minerva turned to practice once again . Minerva twisted and tapped her wand on her hand 'Prehenso" feeling the tingle in her hand she smiled and then put her wand down to touch the desk. She didn't think she would get tired of this. She loved charms. Minerva picked up her wand "Finite"
Laura was glad that the Hufflepuff Girl had helped her. "Thanks for helping me." Laura smiled, she hoped that the Professor wouldn't mind that Minerva had helped her, Laura twisted and then tapped her wand on her hand and said "Prehenso" she felt the tingle in her hand and touch the desk, it felt weird but fun, then she tried her other hand on the desk and well it felt normal, "Finite." Laura said as she pick up her wand and pointed it at her hand, it felt normal again.

Ok now to stop the tingling sensation. This was the incantation that she was most worried about applying. So grabbed her wand with her right hand and pointed it toward her left. Ok now what did the older lion do. Finite. That's it. She pointed her wand towards her left and and said "Finite." Nothing happened. She still felt tingly. No problem this was afterall only the first try right. She sat up a little straighter and tried again. "Finite." Again nothing. Her stomach dropped a little bit this time. What if she was not able to do this spell? How embarassing would it be to have to get help from the teacher from not even being able to accomplish one of her first hands on tasks.
Ok breath she told herself.
She sucked in air and really concentrated this time. She again took her right hand and pointed it at her left and said "Finite." Slowely but surely the tingling sensation stopped. She was estatic, she could do this afterall. She rubbed both of her hands along the tabletop just to be sure and both of her hands felt the same. Success! This felt great. She couldn't wait to learn more.

This should take at least three posts! you have around 20 hours to do this. Other than that, this will be the end of the first part of the lesson.
Sierra gave the professor one slow now. Right. Use more of an elbow movement... Sierra twisted her wand again then gave it a nice tap. Of course she watched her elbow the entire time now. Things still felt awkward for her, but she was at least getting better at it. She'd just have to see what happened when they threw it all together--movements, incantation, and intent.
Great. The first object she was meant to cast on was actually on her body. Marvelous. Sierra sighed and extended her left hand out in front of her body. With her wand pointed right toward it, she went through all the movements again. Twist of the right hand toward the right and then a tap. She didn't cast just yet, though. She'd wanted to get one more feel for the movements first.
Now. Time to really do this. Sierra went through all the movements again, but this time, as she did so, she concentrated hard on her left hand and how she wanted it's ability to grip to greatly increase. As she gave her wand a nice tap, she said, "Prehenso!"

Now that her right hand was all tingly and stuff, Elise put her wand onto the desk. Taking a deep breath, El closed her eyes and put her hands on the table. Trying to feel the difference. Well, her right hand could hardly feel anything other than the tingling, but what she could feel was the wood of the table scratching against it.
Yay. It worked. Now to figure out how to cancel out the spell. Right. Finite.
Picing up her wand again, she tried reversing the spell. "Finite."
Not feeling a difference, Elise sighed and put the wand down, flexing her hand a little.
Tayla was left-handed, while her wand-hand was right. She wondered if she could perform the spell with her left hand, too. She transferred her wand from one hand to the other and practiced the wand movement. It felt awkward doing it with her left.
"Might as well try," she thought. It would be helpful to be able to do spells with either hand. And if she wanted to be really good at Charms, doing spells well with either hand would be one advantage.
"Prehenso," she said, this time pointing at her right hand. She didn't feel anything.
Tayla decided to practice the twist and tap movement some more until her left hand got used to it. Then she'd try the spell again.
Okay, so now to test what the spell had done to her hand. Louisa put it on the desk and slowly passed it along the surface, the used-to-be smooth surface felt rather rough under the charmed palm. Louisa's mouth twitched into a big smile. It must've worked! Without any kind of injuries or mistakes! She stared at her palm for another moment admiring her charms skill.
However, to prove the effect and that this feeling she got was different from the original state of her hand, the girl held out both hands after putting her wand away and palm-down faced them with the surface of the desk. The right, uncharmed, hand felt already smooth against the cold desk while the left, charmed, hand was tougher and caused it to tingle a bit. Passing them over magnified the effect a little bit more proving the spell to be efficient. Louisa's face was bright with satisfaction by this point.

Having just cast the charm, Sierra slowly put her wand down, all the while eyeing the hand she'd cast on and hoping she hadn't caused any permanent damage. She was barely aware of the little sound her wand made as it came into contact with the desktop. She held both her hands up and studied them carefully. It didn't look like she'd done any permanent damage, but then again, looks could be deceiving.
Then her hands slowly made their way to her desktop. She put her left hand, the charmed hand, onto the left side of her desk; and then she put her right hand, the uncharmed hand, onto the right side of her desk. Her eyes immediately grew wide as the tingling sensation started slowly in her left hand but grew more intense as the seconds ticked by. It was the oddest of sensations, and she hoped it'd decrease soon yet still maintain the ability to grip. This would take a lot of getting used to.
Experimentally, she moved her hands along the surface of the desk. She could definitely tell the difference. The charmed hand sort of moved slower, like it was trying to hold on to the wood and not let go. She lifted her hands and stared at them again. Pretty cool.
Tayla practiced the wand movement with her left hand several times. It was odd not using her wand-hand, but she wanted to practice using both hands. Feeling ready, she pointed the wand towards her right hand and said, "Prehenso!" She felt the familiar tingling sensation and the roughness of the wood.
She smiled, quite pleased with herself. "Just takes a little practice," she thought, deciding to practice all spells with both hands from then on.
"Finite," she uttered, and the tingling sensation stopped.
To make sure it wasn't just chance and that she really could do it, she pointed her wand towards her right hand and again said "Prehenso" while doing the twist and tap wand movement. The tingling sensation and roughness came back. She could feel the difference from when her hand was not charmed. "Finite."
That was enough.
She took her wand with her right hand (her wand hand) again and practiced some more. She'd do it repeatedly until the professor would tell them to stop and give more instructions. Like they said after all, practice makes perfect! And this spell would be very handy at Quidditch, especially since Tayla wanted to be a chaser.
Autumn watched and listened very carefully as soon as it was her turn she grabbed her wand and cheld it carefully.
Twist and Tap, "prehenso" She cast it at her left hand and then ut her wand down and touched the table... almost instantly she pulled her hand up that was wierd!
Soon she put it down and felt a tingling sensation... it was wierd but cool

Alyssa was glad that she had been successful the first time with the incantation and the charm. 'But practice makes perfect,' she told herself. So Alyssa decided to try the charm again, walking up to the Professor once the student before her was done, she lifted up her left and pointing her wand at it, in a twisting and tapping motion, she said the words "Pre-Hen-so". Again she started to feel the fingers in her left hand tingling. She hoped that repeatedly performing this spell on her hand, wouldn't cause it irreparable damage. But she trusted the Professor. She knew that Professor Schirmer wouldn't intentionally make them do anything that would cause harm to themselves.
Now that she felt that her left hand was totally tingling, Alyssa walked over to the desk again, to test the difference in the sensations. She first touched the desk with her wand hand, her right hand, and the desk felt normal to the touch. Then she reached over with her left hand.
Like before the moment she touched the desk with her left hand, she felt a tingling sensation when her fingers touched the desk. She then moved her hand across the desk and noticed that the wood felt slightly rougher than it did when she had touched it with her right hand. 'Okay looks like the charm worked again.' Alyssa told herself. 'Time to get some normal feeling back into my left hand.'
Taking out her wand again, Alyssa pointed it at her left hand and said,"Finite" ending the charm on her hand. She started to feel the tingling sensation diminish and when she touched the desk again with it, she could no longer feel the slight roughness of it surface. 'Attempt No. 2 successful'. Alyssa couldn't wait to try this charm out in the field.
LuLu picked up her wand and held it tightly in her hand! Hopfully first time succsussfull although never ACTULLY happened to her before.. sooo... It was sincerly doubted, in her opinion anyways... She loosened her grip on her wand and practised her twist and tap again.. Twist and Tap she motioned!
She stared at the other students waayyy ahead of her so she just decided to start ''Prehenso,'' twist and tap!
Suddenly a tingling sensation started in her right hand it wasn't necessarily sore just.. Odd! It was moving it was simply the oddest thing she'd ever seen... Well on her odd list anyways she was still obsessed with the whole egg and pixie thing last year and she'd never forget the pirates!!!
TAylor put her wand on the table and ran her hands around the wood. She was surpised -despite being told- that the wood was rough with with her right hand but smooth with her left. She smiled but happened to noticed that a first year was having trouble. "Do you have your pronunciation correct? That might be why you are having trouble." Taylor smiled sweetly to the younger girl, hoping that the girl won't get annoyed at the advice.
Silvia nodded her head in thanks to the girl who suggested she check her pronunciation.
"I think I'm just concentrating too much on the wand movements and not enough on everything else," she said. She took a deep breath and thought to herself, wand movement, incantation, and intent. She was starting to get the hang of the wand movements, so this time Silvia focused instead on the incantation and her intent.
"Prehenso!" she said. She thought she felt something in her hand but it was faint. "I think I'm starting to get it," she said. "Prehenso!" she said again, making sure to concentrate on all three aspects of spell casting. This time she really did feel a tingling sensation. It worked! she thought as she ran her hand across the desk.
Browncoat l Extra Syrup l Kita's Strong Confident Other Half l Lemon Patch
After a few tries, the spell's tingling effect didn't bother Arya so much, and she was able to test out the spell on other things besides her desk. They could do that, right? Well she was. She twisted her wrist and tapped her wand against her hand again. "Prehenso." Wiggling her fingers, more for fun than the tingling sensation, she switched her wand over to her left charmed hand, and tried her hand at one of the sliiiightly more complex wand movements she learned in the past.
Her hold was awkward and the tingling and roughness had her instantly wanting her wand back to her right hand. But she didn't drop the wand, there was some fumbling, though still that was clear improvement from her hand without the gripping charm. Done with that awkwardness, she switched wand hands.
Much better.
Then she rubbed her left hand against the sleeve of her uniform and contorted her face a bit. That was... a different type of roughness, if there was such. The prefect cast 'finite' on her left hand and continued to repeat the spell, trying it out on different objects on her person.

Reason: forgot the spell
Carigan stood there, a little scared. She picked up her wand. Okay, concentrate. She thought. She moved her wand exactly how the professor had instructed. Twist and tap. She then pronounced the incantation, exactly how the professor had said it "Prehenso" All the while her intent was on her left hand, since her want was in her right. She felt a little tingly once the spell had been cast. Had she done it? Had she cast it correctly? She braced her hands on her desk and, indeed, her left hand had a much different sensation from the right! How incredible!
She also looked tot he front of the classroom, then, to see how to cast finite, in order to stop the charm. She watched carefully, then tried it herself. "Finite." and her hand didnt feel as tingly, she tried touching her desk again and it was still rough. Perhaps she hadn't done it right. "Finite!" She said, this time with more gusto and the tingling sensation completely diminished from her hand. She touched her desk againa nd it felt smooth, like it did on the right.
Not sure whether this is the 3 post portion. Seeking clarification. Post 3

Alyssa decided that she would try casting the spell one more time. So shaking out her left hand to make sure that she still had circulation, she took out her wand and pointed it at her left hand. With a twist and tap motion, Alyssa said,"Pre-Hen-So". Immediately she could feel the tingling sensation start up again. She played with her fingers on her left touching each finger against her left thumb. Yep they were all tingling.
She walked over to the front and to the 'test' desk. She holstered her wand and placed both her hands on the desk. She rubbed them across the surface and immediately noticed the difference. The surface felt normal to touch when she touched it with her right hand. But when she touched the surface with her left hand, she felt both the tingling sensation, as well as, the roughness of the table.
Alyssa was now confident that she would be able to perform the charm correctly. Taking out her wand, she pointed it at her left hand and said "Finite" ending the charm on it and allowing normal feeling to return to her left hand.

Harvey then his wand on the table "Fin...i...te. Fin..i..te. Fin..i..te. Fin.i.te. Fin-i-te. Finite!. Finite!. Finite!" he practiced before he tried it for real on his charmed hand.. now he didnt want to undo the charm as he loved the tingling feeling but he knew that he had to undo it.. so he picked up his wand and pointed it at his hand and hoped that it worked and that nothing else would happen..
He took a deep breath "Finite!" he said with the wand pointed at his hand.. and slowly he felt that tingling sensation leaving his hand and he knew that the charm had been undone.. It was fun while it lasted..
Kurumi nodded her head in appreciation when the professor thanked her for helping Jezz. Kurumi had really taken to the first year and often kept at least one eye on her during lessons and not because she didn't think the first year lion was incapable of performing, it was done so in a big sister sort of way.

Mike was really excited now, they were going to actually do a spell. He looked up, and seen Kurumi was waving her hand across her desk. Then watched her as she raised up and did the finite charm. It look simple enough, he thought to himself. "Just have to pronounce it right, and concentrate on what you are trying to do." He whispered.
Mike began to concentrate and said the incantation "Prehenso!!" He twisted his wand, and tapped his hand. Nothing, not a spark, tingle, anything. "Ok, let's try it again. Prehenso!! He twisted his wand again, and tapped his hand. Nothing. "Man, what am i doing wrong? Mike then sits back and tries to clear his mind. Ok, I go it. Prehenso!! Twisted his wand, and tapped his hand.
