Default Charms Introduction & Gripping Charm

The charms classroom was clean and bright and ready for the first lesson of the year and Professor Schirmer was waiting at the front of the class for the students to arrive.

Was she in a good mood? Well she was ALMOST smiling, at least.

The desks are set up in the usual way, no funny business today.

Don't worry if you can't join in from the beginning, this lesson will last through the weekend and this first post will be updated as the lesson progresses.

What should firsties know about charms?
What do we know about incantations?
How do we make a spell and its effects cease?
Why do you think we will want to use Finite and NOT Finite Incantatem as the counterspell today?
What do you know about Gripping Charms and what do you think they'd be useful for?
The gripping charm you will learn today has the incantation 'Prehenso'. Can anyone guess how the meaning of this incantation relates to its purpose? Can you think of any related English words?

Seriously? All these people knew about latin? Wow... Aurora was well and truly stumped. Even being able to speak three languages wasn't helping right now, so she was frantically taking notes as everyone else provided answers.

Justin sat and listened to what the other students were saying and he was feverishly writing as some of them spoke. Latin being the basis of most words or charms was not his strong suit, but he'd absorb what he could from the knowledge of others.

Lewis just stared with his mouth slightly open as the same Hufflepuff as before went up to the professor and...HUGGED HER?! There was something seriously wrong with that one. Why was she in the same house as he was? Was it possible to kick her out or something?

Prehenso. Related English words? "Well, there's the adjective prehensile. That sounds...similar." Lewis offered with his hand raised, a little uncertain about his answer. It DID sound similar though. And he was pretty sure it was also related to holding on to something.

"Prehenso literally means to grasp, catch, seize or take hold of something," Amelia figured that the very meaning of the word explained a lot about the relation of it to the actual charm. "Since the charm is a gripping one which I believe makes it easier to catch objects, like Quaffle, catch or grasp, relate quite well to the purpose of the charm," and hopefully that made sense. Because if not she'd made a fool of herself by raising her hand and stating her opinion in front of the others in the classroom.

Gripping Charms.

"It is known to grip tight a certain object easily." he raised his hand to answer. "This charm is mostly used by quidditch players because of the Quaffle." he's not a Quidditch player but his uncle who used to be a quidditch player in his time, told him stories about it. He did mention once about this certain charm. Thankfully he did.

Prehenso? Was that it? Jonathan has never heard of that word before so answering this might be a little difficult. So what does the word mean anyway? Think. Think. Think.

Well, since they are talking about the gripping charm, then shouldn't this be the spell they're going to learn right? Jonathan slightly raised his hand. "Uhmm... Does it mean 'to hold' or 'to grip' or something like that?" he guessed. He wasn't sure if he was correct though but it's worth a try.

As soon as she finished writing down a few notes, Gwen looked back at the Professor. Prehenso... that doesn't sound like anything. It is a gripping charm... so it has to mean something like...to grip?, Gwen first thought, but didn't say anything. It seemed stupid. Silly. Somewhat.

However, after a few minutes, she remembered having read about this charm somewhere. Perhaps the answer was wrong, but it was worth a shot- 'Doesn't it mean 'to capturate'?' No?

Hades stopped writing and put down his quill when the professor asked about the Gripping Charm. He raised his hand mellowly. "Prehenso means 'capture' in Latin, wasn't it, ma'am?" he tried to confirm because he thought that he heard about it from his mother before. "It was invented so Quidditch players can catch the quaffle with a hand, but it can also be used on other things. For instance, when someone was hanging on a high place, they can use the charm to hold on to something," like a pipe.

"We're not talking about what the charm does any more. We've moved on from that question, Mr. Vaughn." The Latin was close enough for the purposes of the charm though.

Janice decided thatshe will call each Professor 'Professor', not Sir, not Miss/Mrs/Ms. They might get offended again. She raised her hand and answered.

Nope, Janice couldn't answer that. Words started runnning down her brain, and most of them has the word 'comprehension' in it. And that would certainly not help her in answering the question asked. She decided to just stay put and wrote more notes based on what others had said.
ooc: I figured something like that. She couldn't NOT reply though

No answer to the question? Althea watched the Hufflepuff for a moment and then moved on to the next student.

Well, since they are talking about the gripping charm, then shouldn't this be the spell they're going to learn right? Jonathan slightly raised his hand. "Uhmm... Does it mean 'to hold' or 'to grip' or something like that?" he guessed. He wasn't sure if he was correct though but it's worth a try.

Minerva pulled out her wand and her book opening to page 47. She looked at the book for a second and then put her wand in the air twisting and tapping it. She did this a few times making sure she had it just right. Once she thought she had it right she did it a few more times, never getting bored of practicing. Once she had done this she placed the wand on the table and saying "Prehenso". She said this in her head and out loud a few times.

Hannah pulled out her book for reference to make sure of the movements. She decided to practice the twisting and tapping first as she was sure that would require more practice. She would twist and tap, twist and tap until she felt like the got the hang of it. Ok she thought to herself now to get the incantation down. She layed her wand down on the desk and started repeating the incantantion. "Prehenso." she said repeadtly until she felt comfortable. She waited for further instruction from the professor. She was excited to get to perform the spell. The first spell she would ever cast.

Zhenya picked up her wand, putting it in a nice comfortable position in her hand. Then she followed the directions on page 47. Okay, it's a twist and tap...

She started twisting and tapping her wand in the air, keeping her mouth firmly shut. It felt a bit odd to begin with, but she soon started smoothing out the movement. Soon enough she felt comfortable doing it, and thought she would practice the incantation after a few more practices with the wand movement.

Daichi's eyes opened and closed as his head nodded a couple of times , almost falling in to a slumber. He really didn't like theory and maybe that was why his practical was so bad but he was more of a practical person. He hides a yawn behind his hand and looked around.

Finally! the practical time was up! Daichi's head snapped up and he got his attention back in class. He listened to the instructions before opening his text book to page 47. Twist and tap.... shouldn't be difficult~

Grabbing his wand from his wristholster , the Slytherin held it in his hand and made a *twist and tap*. Psh, that was easy. *twist and tap* again *twist and tap* again *twist and t-* "Waah!" he let out a high pitched cry when his wand slipped out of his hand and landed on his desk. "Stupid hands..." he mumbled as he picked the phoenix feather wand back up.

Beezus was still thinking hard of another english word that would relate to gripping when suddenly, Professor Schirmer commented on those words that came out of her mouth a few seconds ago. And as she looked at her, she was giving her that pointed look, she didn't give any answers yet! "Errr--Professor, I was merely muttering to myself.." Yeah, well young Ravenclaw, next time..Think and silently.

Sighing with the thought that the Charms Profesor has taken note of her behavior, Beatrice focused herself on the new spell. Wand movement was twist and tap. She quickly hoisted out her wand from its holster and without referring to the book--since, she sort of studied wand movements over the summer, she started practicing..

"Twist..." she said, moving her wrist in a twist. "And tap.." she tapped her wand a bit on the desk. Doing it again, "Twist...and...tap."

Twist and tap!

Lewis first took notes of what Professor Schirmer told them about the spell before reaching for his wand. Trying not to even think the incantation, he held up his wand and gave it a twist by rotating his wrist slightly. He succeeded this by performing a short tap with his wand. That didn't seem to be too hard.

He repeated these movements a couple of times in order to be sure he was doing it right. Lewis then put his wand as far away from him as was possible without it falling off his desk. Now...."PreHENso." Was he saying that right? "PreHENso." It reminded him of hens.

Elise smiled, picking her wand out of her pocket. Feeling its familiar weight in her left hand, she gripped it delicately and gave it a twist. And anti-clockwise twist and a tap. Twist and tap.

Perfect.

Putting down her wand, she tried the incantation. Prehenso. Pre. Hen. So.

"Pre-hen-so,"
she tried slowly, getting a feel of the words. "Prehenso." she beamed. Yay! She'd got it.

Done writing the new spell's note, Louisa put aside her quill and parchment and did NOT grab her wand. Incantation came first, it was the words that usually made her mess up with a charm. If she ever messed up. HEHEHE. Ahem. Well, it was her favorite and strongest subject so...

"Pre-hen-so.." saying it sloowly, it wasn't one of the long gibberish incantations luckily. "Prehenso." See? Easy. Yep. "Prehenso.. Prehenso.. Prehenso.. Prehenso.. Prehenso.." Just in case she missed something. Staring down at her parchment, the girl now picked up her wand and twisted & tapped. Twist, tap. Twist, tap. Twist, tap. Twist, tap. Twist, tap.

Seriously? PFFFFFT. With a smile forming up on her lips, Louisa Carter was starting to think this OWL year was not so hard after all.

... or maybe she was THE smart one? Hehe. Yep, this option was more cheerful.

Kurumi blushed when Professor Schirmer responded to her. Her tone and eye contacted indicated to the fifth year that she had kind-of-sort-of done wrong, but she wasn't entirely sure where. When it came to breaking down spell names and associating them with English words, Kurumi fell flat. English was her second language and sometimes she still needed to translate into Japanese in her head before the English equivalent came out. This had been one of those times. Kurumi bowed her head in apology. Still, she HAD been right. It was a sort of command. So, that was a good thing.

Kurumi listened as the next instruction was given and set her wand on the desk, opting to practice the incantation first. She tended to struggle more with that part anyway. She set her hands on her lap and sat up straight, good posture was important after all. "PrehENso...PREhenso...PreHENSO...PrehenSO... she muttered to herself. None of those sounded right. Professor Schirmer had had a fluidity when she had said the spell. Sort of just rolled off the tongue whereas Kurumi's pronunciation was all choppy and anything BUT fluid.

She cleared her throat again, rolled her shoulders, and attempted to relax her diaphragm. Breathing in deeply, Kurumi attempted the pronunciation again, waving her index finger in the air as a subconscious indicator to be fluid and allow the spell to just roll off the tongue. "Prehenso...Prehenso...Prehenso...Prehenso..." There, that sounded much better.

Hope is the only thing stronger than fear.

Jezzabelle felt herself get even more nervous than before. She was going to go and practice the wand movement first but as she looked down her hand was shaking far too much for her liking. She placed it down gently and took a calming breath. Maybe she'd be better off to practice saying the charm.

"Prehenso," She said. Such and easy word, but she needed to put feeling behind it. "Prehenso... Prehenso." There much better. "Prehenso." She looked down at her hands and noticed they weren't shaking anymore so she picked up her wand and decided to practice. Was it Swish and flick or twist and flick..."Twist and flick. Twist and flick." It felt right. "Twist and flick." Must be right.

"Psst, Jezz," Kurumi said as she leaned over towards the first year lion. "Your twist is fine, but you shouldn't be flicking at the end. You need to make a tapping motion." Jezz was smart and probably didn't really need a demonstration, but Kurumi needed to practice it anyway. "Try it again like this." Kurumi twisted her wand and then tapped the invisible object in front of her. "When you flick, the movement is in the write and is a sharp verticle without a designated start and end point." She did another small demonstration. "A tap is a natural downward movement." And she gave another small demonstration. "Don't worry, it is easy to get all the wand movements confused. I know I did my first year and nearly blew up an object I was trying to levitate."

After Messer finished writing the notes in his journal, he reached out for his wand. He was thinking to practice the wand movement first then he could practice the incantation after that.

Twist and Tap. He repeated those two words inside his head.

He gripped his wand in his hand and gave it a twist and then a tap. The wand movement seems not so hard. He repeated this movement over and over until he was sure that he was doing it right.

Messer then put the wand on his desk like Professor Schirmer instructed. Onto the incantation then. "Pro-hen-so" No that sounds not right. "Pro-" Cough "Pre-Hen-sO" Yup. Its Prehenso not Prohenso. But its still did't sound right. "pRe-hEn-So...PrE-hen-SO.." Ugh! The incantation was definitely harder than the wand movement. "Prehenso..Prehenso" Yup! That was it. "Prehenso"

Sierra nodded when Schirmer confirmed that she'd at least gotten the gist of things. She figured as much. They'd been given a lot to go on. Pulling her textbook out her bag, Sierra flipped to page forty-seven. She was pretty sure she knew how to do a simple twist and tap, but seeing as she was getting older and was now a fourth year, she wanted to start perfecting things.

Right. Just as she'd though--twist and tap.

Leaving her textbook on her desk, Sierra flicked her wand out its holster and got started on the movements. The twist was first, so she held her wand stationary then twisted her wrist ever-so-slightly toward the right side. Finally, she made a gentle tap forward. The movements weren't so bad, except it was sort of awkward to tap when her wrist was turned sideways.
