The charms classroom was clean and bright and ready for the first lesson of the year and Professor Schirmer was waiting at the front of the class for the students to arrive.
Was she in a good mood? Well she was ALMOST smiling, at least.
The desks are set up in the usual way, no funny business today.

ooc: sorry for the time conversion confusion O_O I do not know how I got it so messed up, I'm totally usually an expert. I blame posting the notice before I was awake.
Don't worry if you can't join in from the beginning, this lesson will last through the weekend and this first post will be updated as the lesson progresses.
Questions so far: What should firsties know about charms? What do we know about incantations? How do we make a spell and its effects cease? Why do you think we will want to use Finite and NOT Finite Incantatem as the counterspell today? What do you know about Gripping Charms and what do you think they'd be useful for? The gripping charm you will learn today has the incantation 'Prehenso'. Can anyone guess how the meaning of this incantation relates to its purpose? Can you think of any related English words?
ooc instructions for practising activity can be found here and here
Class is OVER but come and play CAPTURE THE FLAG! This will be your homework and the game is worth 20 points each!

Neat, they were going outside, it did look nice out today anyways. Kimalia's attention faded to the other students who had questions for the Professor and didn't want to miss out on their answers. Well, I will need to retain this stuff next term..

Jonathan eyed the late Slytherin and looked at her. What was she thinking arriving to class late. Doesn't she know that people loose points when they're late for class. He rolled his eyes and then just focused on the professor this time.
Yup. Everything is clear.
Jonathan shook his head "No more question professor" he replied like everyone else. He's quite excited to what they'll be learning today and what activity she has in store for them. It's time to move on!!!
"We're going to learn a spell next and then we shall go outside and... apply it." Althea informed them.
"Are there any questions before we move ahead?"
Selina watched in shock as Eino corrected Kurumi. Wasn't that kind of the Professors job? Whatever, it seemed that everything was under control and Selina had turned over a new leaf... no more arguing in classes. Especially because this did not involve her, but she was sort of confused. Weren't Eino and Kurumi good friends? Eh, what was the story there?
When she diverted her eyes back to the Professor she crossed her arms in her lap and waited. She was good. No question on her end to be honest. When it came to Latin and understanding it Selina was solid. So she waited.

Vlimia smiled widely when they heard they would be doing a spell. She had to be good at this, since she had had practise with wand movement and memorising incantations. Oh, and they were going outside! Vlim looked out the window at the beautiful day outside. It was perfect weather to... apply a spell. Vlimia shook her head to say that no, there was no questions from her. There probably wouldn't be many questions all year, since Vlim liked to read all the information and keep silent about it.

Zack was busy fidgeting with his hair while professor was busy explaining incantations. Why is all the classes that contains theory supposed to be boring? he thought. Wasn't Hogwarts supposed to be the place where everything that happened was interesting and stuff? It's not that he didn't like the professor or something, it was just that he didn't like sitting in one place for more than half an hour.
He tried to remove that was stuck on his hairs. Eeeee, what's that? It's sticky. Is that what i think it is? NO!!!! Finally it came off his hair and he looked at it. No, it's not gum..... It was some kind of semi liquid sticky thing that got stuck on his hair, maybe while coming to the class on his way.
As he was done doing removing it from his hair, the professor had already finished the part about incantation. Great, now, i have to read....Questions? No questions!
He looked up at the professor and heard her saying something that he didn't expect to hear. What? Are we going out? Really? So now you're talking! Woooo!! Learning charms with some acting, that's all he wanted to get real active in this class. It was his first class in which he would use his wand that made him feel even more excited.
As soon as Éloïse heard this, she was very pleased. At last I get a go at spell casting-she thought-I've learnt all the theory, so I should know how to do it. I wonder why we need to go outside though? She wondered what spell they might be using and hoped it wouldn't be too easy.

Justin became excited about the thought of learning a new spell. He looked around the class ans saw Alot of other students reacting the same way.
They're going outside? Yay! He's pretty excited in what will they gonna learn today. Maybe this time he could use his wand. "No. There's no question from me, Professor." he answered nonetheless.

But how did the first spells come about?" she asked. This question had been one she had been thinking about for years but never thought to ask it.
"Both. Consider though, that all spells are invented at some point. Its about finding that balance between incantation, wand movement and of course intent. Its hard work to invent effective spells. I can recommend a few books on the subject if you like." Professor Schirmer answered, keeping it brief since it was a bit off topic.

"You'll be in trouble, because if you break something it will be because you haven't followed my instructions." Althea answered. "And if you break someone..." The Hufflepuff got a searching look at that.
If somehow the little 'puff killed someone or broke off a body part or two, Althea supposed it'd be detention.
Depending on who the someone was.
"If you pay attention you'll be fine." She assured the girl.

It was a very first spell so of course she was excited. How could she think of any question she might want to ask at a time like this, well there was one. What spell would they be doing? Kacie looked ready to burst debating on whether or not she should ask it or not because she really really really wanted to know. She didn't think she could wait until they got outside to learn which spell it was, was no one as curious as she was?
"Which spell? Will it be hard?" She suddenly blurted out. There she asked and felt so much better after, like the question had weighed a heavy burden on her chest that was finally lifted. When she got this excited, it was hard not to get a head of herself. Maybe it was a little to bold to ask, knowing the professor would get around to tell them when she was ready and when everyone was finish asking questions.
The squealing was one thing, the blurting another.
But the world ended because Professor Schirmer did NOT take points. "I'll tell you soon. Be patient."

"The spell we're going to be learning is a fairly long-lasting charm, one that needs to be 'switched off' so to speak, when you wish for it to cease. So before we get into the new charm, how do you stop a spell from working?"
Easy question with a few answers. She waited, looking for a specific one.

She was going to learn her first ever spell! And on the first day of class too. How exciting, Silvia thought as she finished writing down her notes and looked up from the parchment. She wondered if it was one of the spells that she had already read about in her school books or a different one. Having no questions, she sat up straight and eagerly awaited the rest of the lesson.

A fairly long-lasting charm. This professor liked keeping it vague, didn't she? Lewis had not yet guessed which spell they were doing today. There wasn't a single clue. Or at least not any he had noticed.
He considered the professor's next question for a moment. There was more than one answer, right? Which one did she want to hear? "Well, we would either have to say the counter-spell or we could use the general counter-spell Finite Incantatem." He finally replied with his hand in the air.

Kurumi's hand shot up into the air. "One way is by casting the counter spell. A simple example of a set like this would be Quietus and Sonorus." She paused for a moment. "Or, you could always cast Finite Incantatum."

"Finite Incantatem should always work," Nora said after she raised a hand. But she wondered, though, what that fairly long-lasting charm could be that also needed to be ended.

Long lasting charm? As in it would take weeks or months or even years to wear off? And it needs to be switched off.
Beezus tried to absorb all these as she clutched her wand tightly inside her pocket. She didn't had the time to jot down all the information so listening, understanding and analyzing were most important.
When the question was asked, she raised her hand immediately. "You perform a counter spell." she said simply. Like in the case of the Incendio spell, it can be put out by an Aguamenti spell.

Lily was gathering her stuff to get ready to move outside to learn the new charm when the teacher asked another question. Lily reopened her notebook to write down what the others in the class would say, since Lily had no idea how to answer the question. The only answer she could think of would be not casting the charm in the first place, but she couldn't answer that because that might lose her house points. She definitely didn't want to lose points in her first class. So instead Lily raised her hand and answered, "Could you stop the charm from working by using another spell?" Lily figured that that would be the obvious answer but she didn't have anything better.
Éloïse raised her hand and said Professor, if most spells are derived form Latin, would that mean that to form the spell to switch off, we would only have to say the opposite of the word we used in the spell, for example, the Quietus and Sonorus?
"The spell we're going to be learning is a fairly long-lasting charm, one that needs to be 'switched off' so to speak, when you wish for it to cease. So before we get into the new charm, how do you stop a spell from working?"
Ameliah suddenly piped up from the back, unnoticed before. She raised her hand and eagerly said:
"Well, it would depend on the charm being used. Many charms have countercharms used to 'switch off' a certain spell. There can be Nox for Lumos, or even Quietus for Sonorus." she suddenly became quiet again.
Isabelle raised her hand. "You would need to perform a counter spell or generally you can perform Finite Incantatem," Isabelle said, that was as far as her knowledge went. She thought that Finite Incatatem worked for most things, but was not completely positive. It was a start though.

That was easy for Raven because she had learned about that at Duelling Club last year.
"We could use counter spell, Professor. For example is Summoning Charm and Banishing charm, Sonorus and Quietus and also you can try 'Finite' or 'Finite Incantatem'." answered her confidently.
And.. A long-lasting charm? Sounds very interesting. Raven looked forward of them.

How to stop a spell from working? Raising her eyebrows slightly, Louisa pulled her hand away from her mouth and raised it, "If there is a counter spell to the one we wish to stop, we use it. If there isn't and yet the effect can be stopped, so to speak, we use the 'Finite' spell." The girl lowered her hand and absently started biting her nails again.
"well for a long lasting spell you would perform the counter curse, or Finite Incantartum, a well known general counter curse, though this will not work for stronger charms."
Autumn took her best guess she was sure there was more to it than that, but all the same it couldnt hurt to try.

Alyssa thought for awhile and then raised her hand."Professor could one use the Finite or Finite Incantatem spell to stop a spell from working? Or could one just simply stop thinking about casting the spell and lower their wand?"
