Christmas break was over and it was time to bring in the new year with some good old fashioned hard work. There was nothing out of the ordinary with the set up of the desks today, the classroom had the windows shut against the chill outside, but light streamed in and it was quite pleasant and bright.
Professor Schirmer sat perched on her desk with her legs folded.... smiling to herself.
She waved her hand and the door opened, ready for the early arrivals to come in and find a seat.
ooc: Class won't start for about an hour, but feel free to post arriving In Character date/time for lesson is 2pm, Tuesday January 12th, 2077.
edit: letting more people arrive before I begin. Will post around 8am GMT
Class has begun. Remember that the Charms Code of Conduct applies at all times.

Over break he had gotten another new good luck charm for Christmas. It was currently sleeping up in the Hufflepuff boys dorm. He could not wait for this class to finish so he could go play with him.
He set his things on one of the desks in the front row.
"Mr Gunter, good afternoon." She greeted the Hufflepuff.

"Good day, Professor Schirmer," he greeted with a polite nod as he moved to head past her to claim a desk for the lesson. Seeing as he was the first of his friends to arrive, he randomly chose a seat at one of the desks in the middle of the classroom and sat down, setting his belongings on top of the desk before him ready for class to begin.
"Mr Gert." Althea smiled a greeting.

"Good day Professor Schirmer." she greeted politely while she still managed her breathe.
"Hello Miss Charlotte." Thea greeted. Why was the girl in such a hurry? Well it was better than arriving late, she supposed.

"Glad to have you, Miss Potter." For now at least. She smiled at the girl.

Ghosts? Indiana liked ghosts. Well she liked them a lot better now. She'd been scared of them before, but now that she was at Hogwarts, she'd grown to like them. They weren't as scary as she had thought. "I thought ghosts were bad before...." The second year Ravenclaw mused as she raised her hand. "Like before I came to Hogwarts. I heard lots of stories how ghosts are bad, and that they do mean stuff to people." Like haunt them. That was not fun. Indy hoped that that wouldn't happen to her. "But when I came to Hogwarts, I found that ghosts can be nice too! And theres lots of nice ghosts around the school! They aren't as bad as people think."

Professor Schirmer certainly looked cheerful. Ira wondered why. But then, the lesson was about to start so she kept that thought aside and listened.
Ghosts? Spirits? Ira raised her hand up and answered, "Professor, ghosts and spirits are what remains after people die... And they are transparent! I mean, one can see right through them" Then Ira felt that it wasn't a much good answer.. but that was really all that Ira knew about ghosts! Other than the fact that the stories about ghosts and spirits are just horrible and frightening!

Kurumi's jaw dropped. Literally. Her jaw was hanging so wide open that it was a wonder some winged creature of the night didn't come flying out of it. This was so not the topic of conversation she needed right now. There were not too many things that frightened Kurumi to the point of nightmares. One was spiders. The other, cockroaches. But the third...well...the very words that had danced off Professor Schirmer's lips, taunting her, was the third.
Kurumi slouched in her seat a bit. What did she know about ghosts and spirits? That she was afraid of them. That Hogwarts had its own ghosts that for, whatever reason, had decided to stay at the school instead of anywhere else or moving on. Sometimes they didn't even know they were dead. Had a thing for the color red. They enjoyed shrunken head bowling and the occasional death day party...wait..that all didn't make them seem TOO bad. Sitting up in her seat now, Kurumi raised her hand. The moment she did, however, all that lighthearted talk was wiped clean and only scary things her brothers used to frighten her with remained.
"P-P-Professor...i-in Japan we divide ghosts and spirits up into different c-c-classifications d-d-depending on what they can do or the reason why they died," she whimpered, her hand slightly trembling in the air. Ug, why had she even raised it in the first place? Could she go crawl under a blanket right now? With a flashlight? "F-F-For example there are...Zashiki-warashi, who are the g-g-ghosts of children... playing harmless pranks and occasionally causing mischief..." Like Peeves, actually. "B-B-But they a-are said to bring good fortune. T-t-the most frightening are the...the...the Onryō...vengeful ghosts..." That was enough of that talk. Now could she please have her blanket?

Laura looked at the Professor. "Ghosts scare you, they like too tell you to get out of their houses, though there are a few that are friendly and you can talk to them." Laura thought about spirits for awhile. "Aren't Spirits like what your feeling, because you sometimes say my Spirits are high."

Minerva put up her hand "Professor I think ghost is a person who has died, but has unfinished business so he/she does not leave the earth. If you see them you might think they are looking for something or even mean. A spirit is a person who has died and has made it to the after life so they come to visit and we might seem them happy. For example Moaning Myrtle could be a ghost since she doesn't seem happy and Headless Nick could be a spirit he seems happy enough." Minerva put down her hand hoping she was at least close.
No surprises, right? Althea stood up and took her place near the board.
"To start with, tell me what you know about Spirits. Ghosts, that is, and no, this isn't Ghoul Studies, I don't expect regurgitated textbooks, just share what you know, or what you've heard. Please try not to repeat information if you can help it." After all there was plenty to say, right?
Uuh. Evelyn wasn't really comfortable with the question since ghosts scared the heck out of her and she really didn't want to talk about them...but she had to answer, right?
Evelyn bit her lower lip in thought before she said, "Well, a ghost is the soul or the spirit of a deceased person."
Nate raised his hand and said "Professor a ghost is the remains of a person that died, and they can;t move on for whatever reason. Whether it's they want to get revenge on the person that killed them, or they may not even know that they are dead. A ghost would normally haunt the area that they died in. Ghosts normally don't attack people they just like to scare people. They can be preffered to be seen as an apparition or they can stay invisible. But I think that a physics can see and/or sense them even when they are invisible."

Ghosts? Generally, Elise was quite scared of ghosts and sometimes wondered if her mother might ever come back as one. She knew it'd never happen, though.
Raising her hand, she smiled. "They're what's left of people who died before but didn't accept the fact that they were dead. Which probably resulted in them having to stay on earth forever?"
It came out as a question, but Ghouls and Ghosts weren't something Elise was very fond of reading about. They gave her nightmares.

Ghosts. She knew quite a bit... but she had never read a book about them. Vlimia decided to raise her hand anyway. "Well, I know that ghosts are the soul of a person, or even an animal, that has died but cannot, for some reason, pass on." She said, putting a little extra emphasis on the words pass on. "I also know that if you walk through one accidentally, they are icy cold." Vlimia said, remembering that time she went to her Aunt Margaret's house... to find that her Aunt Margaret had been a ghost for two years! "Ghosts also celebrate their deathday, with a birthday party-like atmosphere. At deathdays, they usually have living people give them rotten food, since they can slightly taste it." She said, speaking from experience. Her Aunt Margaret had hosted a deathday party, and Vlim, Vlim's father and Aunt Ivy was invited. Since they were all still alive, it was quite odd, but rather fun - they got to learn a lot about life as a ghost... and Aunt Margaret could still have an intelligent conversation.
Sophie didn't mind talking about ghosts. She would mind if she had only known storys from muggle perspective, but that wasn't the case. She raised her hand. "Professor, my dad told me that ghosts remain as ghosts, as in, they don't go on to the... uh... whatever there is after we die... because they were too afraid to do so. Or simply chose to stay here on earth." She wasn't sure about what to think of those who chose to stay. Hm...
Mom says I have no sense of direction, so I packed my bags and right.
Oakey raised his hand when Professor Schrimer asked her question on what they knew about ghosts. He overheard Kurumi's answer and thought maybe he could add some more Ma'am there are other fancier names for ghosts Oakey started like apparition ,or poltergeist. Could it be that these are different kinds of ghosts? He stayed quiet for just a moment then added one more fact. Oh! And aren't all ghosts made of ecto plasma?

Ghost? Spirits? Well, until now she didn't know the difference between both of them.
"Professor" she raised her hand and answered. "Well... Ghost are the spirits which come from dead person. While spirits are.... noncorporeal substance." Well, she didn't know whether that's right or wrong.

Ghosts? Merlin... What was with all of the ghost talk this term? Seriously, first at the party, then in rumors, now in Charms. It was as if the whole school had ghost fever. Maybe it was just Selina, but she did not have the same fever. It was just uninteresting to her. But she replied anyway, "Ghosts are shadows of this who have died and are afraid of death or have regret and cannot move on past the veil. So their essence stays behind for eternity."
Ghosts. What exactly did the professor want to hear about them? Selena stayed quiet for a moment, fiddling with her quill. Ghosts. There were ghosts in Hogwarts wasn't there? She was pretty sure the professor would not appreciate Selena's statement of "Ghosts exist." So she decided not to say it. Even if she wanted to. What else did she know about ghosts? Not much actually. "Ghosts are pretty much dead people who did go on past the physical living world. So they're kinda alive... but they're not." They were like zombies, really. Selena wanted to squish Kent. Having a pygmy puff during a lesson about ghosts would probably help her a loooot.

Alyssa thought for a moment. Most of the things she wanted to say had already been mentioned by the other students but she raised her hand and answered." Professor a Ghost or spirit is actually the soul of someone or something who has died but has not moved on to the spiritual plane or the next dimension but has chosen to linger in our world. It could be because 1. they have some unresolved business they need to attend to 2. They don't know that they are dead. 3. They are afraid of crossing over because they don't know what awaits them on the other side or 4. They like it here and want to stay. Some are malevolent spirits who are evil and want to cause harm, while others are known as benevolent spirits who protective and harmless. "
Ghosts? Spirits? Janice isn't exactly that fond of them. Most of ghosts freak her out, including the Fat Friar, and especially the Bloody Baron. It's just so weird how they couldn't move on, considering they had been in this world long enough to know. She raised her hand and answered.
"Professor, a ghost is a spirit of a person or a living thing that should have been, err," she actually wanted to say not here, but it would be kind of mean, "passed on to the next, err, level, yeah, but did not. Like the 4 House Ghosts, and Peeves." The annoying Peeves, she continued in her head.
Ghosts? Spirits? They're talking about those spiritual thingy? Are they gonna see some ghosts today or maybe summon one? He always wondered whether his mother come back as a ghost but he doubt that since he prefer she didn't come back as ghost that thought terrified him.
Messer raised his hand up in the air "I think a ghost is a spirit of a deceased person or animal that for some reason can't move on because they still has unfinished business here." Well that's what he heard in those muggle movies.

"From my experience, Professor." Arya looked away from the window and raised her hand for this. "Ghosts seem to be full of advice, both good and bad, and they have interesting stories to share from their past, or all that they've learned while being a spirit." Her hand went down, but the curious look she was sporting stayed. What, she wondered, would this lesson be about?

Sophie heard her classmates' answers and frowned, thinking. Lots of them seemed to be talking about the house ghosts and Peeves as being the same... "kind". She hesitated before raising her hand again. "Professor, aren't poltergeists different from regular ghosts?" Sophie thought they were different from each other, even though she couldn't tell what those differences were. She hoped she would finally get an answer to that.

Then she asked a question and he immediately raised his hand, " Professor ghosts and spirits are often left behind when the person that they belong to have been killed suddenly or if their death was traumatic, such as murder."
Ghosts and spirits? Silvia wondered what sort of Charms lesson this would be. She thought for a moment and then raised her hand. "Well, ghosts can move through walls and objects. And they can't eat because the food would just fall right through them."

Zack looked up suddenly, shocked about what he just heard. Huh? What GHOSTS? Where Ghosts!? i don't like ghosts and why are we talking about ghost in charms class? Am i in the wrong class? he thought as waves of questions struck his mind.
He looked around to see if he was in the right place in all panic.
Yeah, right place, maybe wrong topic! he though and smirked.
He was now completely awake. The topic interested him. He raised his hand and said "Professor, Ghost cannot be seen. But there are some people who agree that they have seen them. I'm the one who didn't so, i don't really know what they look like. They look really disgusting in some muggle movies." he said and brought his hand down.
