Default Broom Care

The Broomshed

The Broomshed is a place where the Hogwarts school brooms are stored when not being used by students participating in Flying Class or Quidditch. The shed is located one hundred yards from the Quidditch Pitch and appears to be on the verge of collapse to the untrained eye. Carefully open the door that miraculously hangs on rusted hinges and inside you'll find the broomsticks hanging from the ceiling, glass cauldrons and leaning up against the walls. Select your broomstick with care before heading out to class and return it to it's resting place when class is over. At the center of the room is a large wooden table surrounded by benches - take care not to get any splinters if you decide to take a seat while tuning up your broom!

Basic Broomshed Rules:
1. RP your character getting a broom for class/returning a broom/caring for a broom, etc. Please be aware that there are no Firebolts in the shed nor can you find the 'old' Quidditch Equipment Trunk in this shed.
2. Broomsticks in here are for flying practice, Flying Class, and Quidditch uses only. If your character sneaks in to take a broom for a flight by the lake or on other areas of school grounds, expect a loss of House Points and/or Detention. This rule also applies to playing with Quidditch equipment on school grounds or in the Castle itself. Remember - Quidditch and Flying only happens in the Practice Pitch thread and/or Flying Lesson threads.
3. The Broomshed is not a place for public displays of affection (PDA) - violators will lose House Points and gain a date in the Dungeons (aka, Detention).
4. Observe SS Board Rules at all times.
5. Have fun!

Messer watched as Professor Vindictus showed them the next steps. In this step they need to trim the tail twigs. Once the Professor was done with his demonstration and gave them a green light to start trimming the tail twigs, Messer grabbed his supply kit and took out the tail twig clippers and the polish jar.

The young badger picked up the tail twig clippers with his right hand and started trimming the tail twigs. He made sure that he only clipped the jagged twigs. Like Professor Vindictus said the clipper was really sharp, he didn't had any difficulty to trim the jagged twigs.

Slipping her fingers in the holders, Kurumi pulled on one of the splintered tail twigs again and was just about to clip away when...

Oh? Another person was offering her clippers. It was nice to know that people were willing to share. "Oh, thank you, but I've already borrowed a pair," she said with a smile before setting her mind back to the task at hand.

Painstakingly, Kurumi clipped each tail twig that needed clipping individually and set the bits on the table in a neat row. More than once, Kurumi had set the clippers down and held the broom up very close to her face to inspect it, making sure that no jagged twigs - no matter how big or small - went unnoticed. Kurumi continued to clip away at the broom until she could see no more splintered ends. Of course, she could have gone over with a magnifying glass to make sure that everything was perfect...but she really didn't care about brooms THAT much to do so. Besides, Professor Vindictus needed something to do in the evenings...possibly.

Kurumi then walked back over to the Ravenclaw girl and handed her the clippers. "Thank you again," she said with a wink as she set them down on the table and then returned to her own broom.
Taylor looked up at the gryffindor girl who she lent the clippers to. "Oh anytime." Tay smiled and was confused about the wink but didnt think about it much. She put the clippers back into the kit and looked up at the professor, awaiting him to speak again.

Raven watched Professor Vindictus demonstrated the next step: Trim the twigs and polish the handle. Then she started trimming the twigs. She took a clipper from the kit box and tried to snip the twig, Hope the clippers was not dull.

"Clip.. Clip... Clip.."

She trimmed the twigs carefully in order to get the good results. Voila!

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

"On to the next step!'' Jory said not too happily. It involved polishing and even though he knew how to do it, he had never actually polished anything in his life before.

He tried to follow the Professor's instructions to the letter. Very carefully, Jory rubbed the handle of the broom in a circular motion, making sure to get every corner of the handle polished.

The Hufflepuff took his time in doing this. He was kind of enjoying polishing. And the smell of the polish. After completely polishing the handle, Jory consulted his watch for the five minutes to pass.

On her way back to the table, Alyssa stopped at the baskets containing the blue towels and picked up another blue towel from it. She then reached into the basket containing the red rags and removed one from it before returning to the table. Stuffing her towel into her pocket for the time being, Alyssa removed the lid from the jar of polish and using the red rag, she placed it over the fingers of her right hand, before reaching into the jar of polish and scooping up a glob of polish the size of a knut. She then replaced the lid back on the jar. Now that she had the polish in her rag, Alyssa worked it in the rag using her fingers until she felt the polish starting to warm up through the rag.

Picking up the handle of the broom, she slowly applied the polish onto it, rubbing it in, in a circular pattern. Moving up and down the handle, she made sure that each circular pattern overlapped the other until she covered the entire handle with polish. She then sat back and watched her watch tick off the seconds until 5 minutes had passed. While she waited, she reviewed her journal and scratched off the steps that she had completed.

Text Cut: Steps to Broom Cleaning

1. Take a bucket
2. Pour cap full of concentrated cleaner into it.
3. Point wand inside bucket and fill it halfway with water using the Aguamenti spell.
4. When bucket is half full, end spell by saying "Finite".
5. Holster wand
6. Go to baskets, take a sponge from one basket and 2 blue towels from the other basket.
7. Stick sponge into sudsy water to get it wet and then squeeze out excess.
8. Wipe handle with sponge cleaning all traces of dirt and grime.
9. Use blue towel to pat dry the handl
10. Once done drying the handle, plunge tail twigs of broom into the bucket and stir counter-clockwise seven times.
11. Leave tail twigs in water for approximately minutes.
12. The stir tail twigs in water clockwise seven times.
13. Leave for another 2 minutes.
14. Place used blue towel on floor next to bucket.
15. Take broom out of bucket and hold over towel on the floor.
16. Using second towel, gently pat the tail twigs until they are no longer dripping.
17. Place broom on table.
18. Clean bucket using Scourgify spell
19. Wipe up floor using both towels.
20. Place towels in towel bin and sponge back into basket located to the left of fireplace
21. Trim tail twigs using tail twig clippers, by snipping away any jagged twigs.
22. Return clippers back into supply kit when done and toss twigs into fire.
23. Go to baskets. Pick up one red rag from red rag basket and another blue towel from the blue towel basket.
24. Take rag and open can of polish.
25. Scoop out about a knut size glob of polish.
26. Place lid back onto jar.
26. Work the polish around in the rag for about a minute or two until polish starts to warm up.
27. Rub the polish onto the broom handle in a circular motion. Overlap areas.
28. Once handle is completely covered with polish, wait 5 minutes.

29. Polish will dry and leave hazy finish on wood.
30. Take blue towel and gently buff off the dried polish in a small circular pattern.
31. Apply polish again, repeating steps 25-30
32. If polishing process is done correctly, should be able to see my reflection on the handle.

He crouched down and grabbed a bucket which he placed on the floor. Vindictus then poured a cap full of the cleanser into the bucket and stuck his wand into it.

"Aguamenti!"

Water shot out of his wand and the bucket began to fill up with water.

"Finite!"

He pulled his wand out of the bucket and pointed to the sudsy water.

"Once you've filled the bucket, put your wand away and grab a sponge out of the basket," he instructed and grabbed one himself. The basket of sponges was located between two other baskets - one contained blue towels, the other red rags. "First, you want to clean the handle. Stick the sponge into the sudsy water and give it a squeeze; if you don't then you'll have a huge mess to clean up later."

Wink.

"Wipe the handle clean until all traces of built-up dirt and grime are gone. Grab a blue towel and gently pat the handle dry. Once you're finished cleaning the handle, carefully plunge the tail twigs into the bucket. Slowly stir counter-clockwise seven times, then stop and keep the tail twigs submerged in the sudsy water for approximately 2 minutes. Then stir clockwise seven times and submerge for another 2 minutes. Then we have the messy part."

Grin.

"The towel you used to dry off the handle - place it on the floor next to the bucket. You'll need another towel, too, so grab one. Then take the broom out of the bucket and hold it over the towel that's on the floor. With the second towel, gently pat the tail twigs until they're no longer dripping. When finished, place the broom on the table so that you can clean up."

"Use Scourgify to rid the bucket of its watery contents and use the two towels to mop up any water. Place the towels in the towel bin and the sponges in the basket located to the left of the fireplace."

"Now show me how you can remove the yucky dirt and grime from your brooms!"

OOC: This should take you at least 4 posts. Be descriptive and have some fun (just don't set anything on fire). I'll post the next step around 8pm EST tomorrow.

"After you're finished cleaning the broom, you need to trim the tail twigs using the tail twig clippers," he said. "Carefully snip away any jagged twigs and do not attempt to reshape the tail. The clippers are all sharp so there shouldn't be an issue with them not working. Dull clippers won't work at all."

"When you're finished trimming the tail twigs, place the clippers back into the supply kit and toss the teensy twig bits into the fire. Then grab a red rag and open the can of polish."

To demonstrate what he meant, he pulled two items out Kurumi's kit.

"Tail twig clippers," Vindictus said as he held the silver clippers up for everyone to see. He then put it back and took out the polish jar. "Fleetwood's High-Finish Handle Polish - the best polish on the market." He put the polish jar back into the kit and reached for a red rag.

"Grab a red rag, unscrew the lid and dip the rag into the jar. Scoop out about a Knut's size glob of polish and then make sure you put the lid back on the jar. Work the polish into the rag for about a minute or two - this action will warm up the polish and make it easier to apply."

Well, they did need to know the simple trick or else they'd waste the polish and apply too much!

"Gently rub the polish onto the broom handle in a small circular pattern. Make sure you overlap the areas. Do not rush this step - take your time! Once you've completely polish all over the handle, wait five minutes. The polish will dry and leave a hazy finish on the wood. Grab a clean towel and gently buff off the dried polish in a small circular pattern. When you finish, repeat the polishing step again. After buffing the broom handle after the second polish application, the wood should be shining like glass. If you can't see your reflection in the handle, then you must repeat the polishing step again."

Grin.

"For those who are ready to begin polishing their brooms, please begin."

OOC: If you haven't cleaned your broom (or need to finish the first step), please continue and then move on to this one.

Please continue to title your posts with your post number (post 1, post 2 . . . post 8, post 9, etc.) This step should take at least 4 posts - have some fun and be creative, but no polish fights!

Steps 1 and 2 should have a combined minimum number of 8 posts (again, continue numbering your posts - eg. post 5, post 6, post 7, etc.).

I'll post again with the 3rd step of the lesson when I get home from work tomorrow.

Vickers stood to collect the bucket then walked back to his seat. He flipped the broom care kit open again, then reached in to take out the concentrated cleaner. He unscrewed the cap open then measured out one cupful. He poured the contents into the bucket then returned the cap onto the bottle.

He reached for his wand and pointing it deep into the bucket uttered "Aguamenti" he got a little past halfway when he finite'd the spell and set his wand back to its holster.

After she had finished trimming the broom twigs, she moved to polish the broom handle. She took a jar of handle polish from her kit.

"Fleetwood's High-Finish Handle Polish" she murmured. So, let's see whether the polish was REALLY the best polish on the market! Then she grabbed a red rag. She unscrewed the lid and dipped the rag into the jar. Then she scooped out the polish, just a little of glob--about a knut's size. She put the lid back into the jar and worked the polish into the rag about a minute.

After this, she was ready to polish the handle.

Polish again??? >_>

Sigh. Sophie got some more polish on the red rag and warmed it up like she had done before. Looking at pretty much nothing, she kept on working on it for around a minute.

Pulling the broom closer aagain, she restarted doing the circular pattern on the handle. She made sure to overlap the areas like in the first time. Sigh. When all of the handle was polished for the second time, Sophie put the rag down and waited forever five minutes.

Sigh. After that, she grabbed the clean towel one more time and gently buffed off the dried polish in a small circular pattern aaagain... Sigh.

Sophie could sort of see her blurred reflection on the handle. NO! She wasn't polishing it again until it was oh so perfect and shiny and reflecting her face like a mirror! That was definitely good enough for her.

After five minutes, Jory noticed the polished had dried. With a clean towel, he started to rub off the dried polish in a circular motion.

Afterwards, Jory started the polishing all over again. He was starting to get tired of all this polishing. Not to mention that the scent was starting to get to him now. After the second buff, the handle was not shining like glass as the Professor said it would.

Groaning to himself, Jory repeated the polishing and buffing step again. This time the result was obvious. "Finally!'' he exclaimed "You're looking good, broomstick.''

Once the seconds ticked off the last minute, Alyssa examined the broom handle and noticed that the polish had left a hazy finish on the handle. Pulling out the towel from her pocket, Alyssa started buffing off the polish on the handle, in small circular patterns. She worked up and down the handle, taking her time and making sure that she had totally buffed off the polish from the handle, before laying aside the towel and picking up the red rag again.

Removing the lid of the jar of polish again, Alyssa took the red rag and scooped up another glob of polish about the size of a knut, before replacing the lid back onto the jar. Alyssa worked the polish in the rag until the polish started to warm up and she could feel it through the rag. Taking the rag, she then applied another round of polish onto the handle, rubbing in the polish in circular patterns up and down the handle. She took her time doing this portion of the cleaning process, making sure that as she rubbed in the polish, that each circular pattern, overlapped the other. Once she was sure that the entire broom handle was covered in polish, Alyssa sat back and waited for 5 minutes to go by to allow the polish to seep into the handle.

As she waited, she checked off the steps in her journal.

Raven had waited for five minutes in order to dry the polish. Then she grabbed a clean towel and gently buffed off the dried polish in a small circular pattern. After she had finished the step, she repeated to polish the handle again.

She grabbed a red rag. She unscrewed the lid and dipped the rag into the jar. Then she scooped out the polish, just a little of glob--about a knut's size. She put the lid back into the jar and worked the polish into the rag about a minute.

Then she grabbed a towel and buffed off the dried polish. The handle now was shining after it had polished. Raven wiped her forehead and smiled.

After the five minutes were up, Alyssa examined the handle again and was glad to see that the polish had now turned the handle hazy looking. Picking up her blue towel, Alyssa slowly buffed off the polish in small circular patterns. She started from the top of the handle and buffed her way downwards, continuously circling the rag in her hand over the handle. As she buffed, she started to see a blurrish reflection of herself on the handle. But as she continued to buff, taking her time and whistling an old tune, "Whistle while you work", a tune that she had somehow remembered after watching an old muggle movie, Snow White, Alyssa noticed that her reflection began to appear sharper and clearer on the handle. Glad that what she was doing was working, she continued buffing off the polish, until she could see her reflection all along the handle.

Now that she had completed polishing the handle, Alyssa reviewed her journal, scratching off the steps that she had completed, before sitting back and waiting for the Professor to give further instructions.

Vickers stood and neared the baskets that had the rags and the sponges. He collected one of each and walked back to his seat, setting the rags aside for later. Taking the sponge in his hand, the boy dipped it into the bucket then gave it a squeeze, opting to keep a bit more of the soapy mixture for the first pass. He started at the top of the handle then down the entire shaft of the broom, giving it a quick swipe before returning back to the top and made a more detailed scrubbing. Detailing. Yeah he's good at that.

When he was done he took the blue rag and patted the shaft dry just as the Flying Professor demonstrated, absorbing as much dampness from the shaft as he could.

Kurumi scooped all the clipping into her hands and walked over to the fireplace to toss them in. Ooooooooh...that felt really nice. Kurumi hung out there for a few moments, warming up her hands and body before heading back to her station and her broom. She then took out her piece of parchment and checked over the list again. Oh, right, she needed to grab yet another towel.

Shuffling her feet back to the pile of rags, Kurumi picked up a red one and then returned to her table where she removed the polish from her kit and then attempted to twist the top off. "Mmmmmmmmmmmm," she said, her face contorting as she twisted and pushed with all her might to get the cap off. But it didn't budge. Maybe if she used the rag? Kurumi placed the red rag over the can of polish and tried to twist it off again, but it still didn't budge. It was lefty loosey righty tighty....right? Just to be sure, Kurumi tried in the opposite direction just to be sure, but she could tell that that was going to get the job done either.Trying again with the rag, Kurumi still wasn't able to get the lid off and resorted to hitting it against the edge of the table.

*clang clang clang*

Maybe that worked? Her brothers often did that when it was pasta night...that, or they wore rubber gloves. Using the rag again, Kurumi turned the cap and... POP! The lid came off. Ha! And she had been told that hitting things didn't always make it better.

Now with her can open, Kurumi scooped a knut size out and held the rag in her hand while she screwed the cap back on. Stupid cap. She then laid the rag on the broom's handle, polish side down, and began to work it into the wood.

Jotting down a few notes here and there, Kennedy readied himself for the next steps. Finally, this broom was going to be shiny...but first, he needed to clip the tail twigs. He took the clippers from the kit and examined the twigs that were sticking. He began trimming and while he did that, he kept the twig bits in a neat pile so that they wouldn't scatter all over the place.

Clip, clip, cliiip.

When he was done, he placed the clippers back into the supply kit and went to throw the twig bits into the fire. He stood there for a while, watching the little bits burn.

Minerva started putting the polish on in a circular motion. She made sure that every part of the handle had polish on it. As she rubbed in the polish she made sure that it overlapped, remembering how she helped her dad polish the care a few times it was pretty much the same thing. Once the broom had the polish on it she set it up to wait five minutes for it to really set in.

After the polish warmed up, he pulled the broom closer and started to rub rub the polish onto the broom handle in a small circular pattern. He polished the broom handle carefully. The young badger made sure that he had completely polish all over the handle and didn't miss a spot. Messer waited for five minutes in order the polish to dry.

Taking the Ravenclaw! blue towel she used for the handle, Elise set it on the floor next to her bucket before hoisting the broom out of the water. Taking a second towel, Elise held the broom further down towards the end and started patting the tail twigs. The water immediately started soaking the towel and when the towel couldn't hold any more water, Elise wrung it into the bucket.

Continuing to pat, she worked until the tail twigs were completely dry. Good. Now that that was over, she set the broom onto the table and pulled out her wand. Mopping up the excess liquid on the floor with the towels, Elise squeezed them dry into the bucket.

Picking up her wand, she swept it over the bucket and willed the water to go away. "Scourgify," she whispered, before pocketing her wand. Job completed. Taking the towels and placing them over her right shoulder, she put the sponge into the bucket.

Depositing the towels in the towel basket, she turned to the left of the fireplace and dropped the sponge in. Now, what?

Default post 8 - wax on...wax off
astronomizzle ♧ gryffinDORK | & the rest is drag ♣ #badluckDerf

Okay...NOW Kurumi was feeling the whole wax on wax off scene and that feeling was only intensified by the circular motion of the rag on the handle. "Wax oooooooooon," she said softly as she moved her red rag in a clockwise fashion up the handle nice and slow until she reached the rounded top of the handle. Once she was there, Kurumi paused for a moment to shake her arms out a bit and stretch them. "And...wax ooooooooooooooooooff," she said as she slowly made her way down in counter clockwise until she hit the tail twigs.

Pausing again, Kurumi saw that there was still wax on her rag. Might as well still use it, yeah? Kurumi turned the broom handle in her hands a bit to examine it and see if there were any spots where it seemed like she had missed and made a few small circular movements around those spots and applying a nice thin coat to that area as well. Once that was done, Kurumi pulled the parchment out of her pocket again to check her check list. Wait five minutes. She could do that. Shoving the parchment back in her pocket, Kurumi held the broom by the tail twigs so as not to leave any finger prints on the wax and began to hum to herself the first song that reminded her of...brooms.

Ella listened carefully to directions and then reached into the supply kit, grabbing the clippers carefully. Okay, carefully now...I need to trim the tail twigs...easy-easy. Ella slowly started to snip at the jagged twigs, making sure not to clip too much off of the tail. She moved through the twigs meticulously, making sure that they kept the general shape they had started with. When she finished, she inspected the tail twigs with a satisfied nod. She then placed the clippers back in the supply kit. Walking over to the fire, she tossed the twig bits in, watching as they sparked. "See you never." she said with a smile. Returning to her spot, Ella looked down to see what she had to do next.

Monica got up to get a clean, new rag. She repeated the same process with this rag, buffing the handle in small circular motions. Once all the polish had been rubbed off, Monica sighed. Broom cleaning and maintenance was hard work. She looked at her broom and started the polishing process all over again.

When the polish already dry, Messer grabbed a clean towel and gently buff off the dried polish in a small circular pattern. When he was finished with it, he repeated polishing the broom handle. Then Messer waited for another five minutes so the polish will dry. For the second time he buff off the dried polish in a small circular pattern. When he finished this steps, he saw the wood was now shining like glass like the Professor said. Now he wait for the next instruction.

Monica again took her old rag and dipped in the polish and rubbed it until it was warm and smooth. She then applied it to her broom in circular motions from top to bottom. After it was covered, she, again, waited five minutes for the polish to dry and fog on her broom. When the time came she returned to buffing the polish away. Once this was finished, she looked down at her handiwork. She smiled at her hard work and it smiled back, herself in the reflection. She then cleaned up her space and waited patiently for the next set of instructions.
