Tayla heard Beezus ask about Pluto and offered an answer. "I think it's right that Pluto isn't considered a planet. It's the only one of the original nine to have an orbit that crosses another planet's orbit...and it's really small. But...I guess a dwarf planet is still a planet. Right?"

She didn't know if the two would agree with her last statement.

And here comes another one who seems to be in the mood working with her. "Oh, hello Tayla." Beezus greeted the approaching Gryffindor with a smile. "No, not at all. We'd need more heads to work this out," yeah, well, kind of.

And off to the discussion. Well, naturally, she wasn't that interested with the fact that Pluto had been degraded lower than a planet. After all, Pluto wasn't a meteor or a comet and Beezus just happened to be fond of those. "It is still a planet, yes. Well, I think you can say that. However, it now seems to be lacking some of the requirements on being a planet. And if we really think about it, Pluto don't look like a planet anymore. I mean, it was small before but it grew smaller now because it moved farther away."...She was still about to say more when Elise interrupted.

So back to the Pluto discussion. Tayla was... becoming a human textbook, so Elise just smiled a little. "Agreed," she beamed. "Demoting Pluto's kinda unneessary."

"Whoops," she muttered under her breath. Their time was up. Now, who'd go up to talk?

"I.." now what was she about to say again? "I don't really know if I disagree or not." That was highly the truth anyway. She wasn't too keen on being acquainted with the small planet.

OCC: One person from each group summarizes briefly what you’ve come up with in the order above. Then I can move on tomorrow night.

Shortly afterwards, Professor Roslund started writing the list of the students working together. And she could see her name, together with Elise and Tayla. "Uhhhmm..so, who's gonna share what we've discussed to the rest?" she asked the two. Not that they had much discussion about the topic anyway, but at least a sentence or two about what they talked about was good enough.

She wanted a cookie...

Kurumi always had cookies on her. So Selina poked Kurumi in the side and said, "If I promise to take the conversation seriously, will you give me a cookie?" Positive reinforcement.

Kurumi shot Selina a look. Maybe her best friend wasn't talking the class seriously, but she was, and right now Selina was talking when others were giving their reports. Kurumi pulled her parchment closer to her and figured that she was meant to be the one to report in.

So, Selina got another look - one that said she was not going to be getting any cookies - and then turned her attention forward towards Professor Roslund and the rest of the class. "Selina and I discussed various things, but the bottom line comes down to a few things. First, time. Pluto was discovered in 1930, and our understanding of the universe then compared to what is was in 2006 is very VERY different and we are able to see and study things more clearly. Some have mentioned that changing Pluto to a dwarf planet is inconvenient to us and unfair to the planet, but we have to remind ourselves that this is science, not philosophy or morals." Even if Kurumi DID feel bad for the planet. However, this was not something that could be debated based on emotions."What if humanity had thought the same thing some of us think about Pluto, but applied it to the flat-earth model?" Just something to chew on for thought. "Second, the qualities that define a planet just can't be ignored. Planets must be gravitationally dominant in their orbit and prevent anything of similar size from floating around it. Pluto not only shares its orbit with a number of other Kuiper Belt objects, some larger than itself such as Eris, but it also flies inside the orbit of Neptune." Kurumi shrugged her shoulders. "Maybe one day science will evolve and we will find something that proves Pluto should be a planet, but, for now, facts and figures just really can't be ignored. Pluto is in the right place." For now at least.

And with that, Kurumi sat down and folded her hands together on the table.

Right, Pluto.

She'd barely sat down when she heard another person standing there. A Gryffindor she'd seen around lately, but never got around to talking to. "Err... Hi, Tayla," she smiled. "Yeah, I'm Elise." Not that many people knew that anyway, so she wasn't offended.

"I'm not sure it's unnecessary," Tayla replied. "I guess they wanted to make things more specific, categorizing some to being dwarf planets, including Pluto." Which, based on the definition of a planet, Tayla thought was quite right.

Selina was in the dog house. With the look that Kurumi had given Selina she could tell that she was not exactly in her best friend's good graces at the current moment. The problem was that Selina had to try to break up the monotany of the classroom somehow. Kurumi, every time before today, was always there with her to try and make the lesson fun and interesting, not that Professors did not do a brilliant job themselves. However, ever since Kurumi had come clean about her big secret she had been a little different. A little colder. The bewitched blonde could not blame her, but she was not going to bury her sorrows away in some books and classes.

When Kurumi was done with her summary Selina nodded and added, "Yeah, what she said..."

Taking the initiative, August cleared his throat and then stood from his chair. "Well Professor, Gideon and I both agree that Pluto should have never been downgraded from planet status. I brought up the point that because it had been classified as one for so long there was no reason to change it and Gideon said that they should have come up with a classification system that was based on common factors of each of the nine planets."

Edvard turned his attention to the only boys sitting in the room and listened as August summarized what they had come up with in short. When August was done Professor Roslund responded "Interesting suggestion Gideon. A classification system based on common factors of all nine planets would be something for the scientists to create. Until they do though we are stuck with the classification system we have."

"I'm sorta on the fence," she admitted. "I believe that Pluto doesn't fit the guidelines of being a planet as are established... but I also feel that if it was considered a planet for so long, it doesn't make sense to just change it. But things are as they are, and Pluto's not considered a planet anymore." She shrugged. Wasn't likely that anything would happen to change things, and it didn't meet all the guidelines. "And Nerida doesn't think that it meets the guidelines of being a planet and doesn't share common elements that the other planets share." She cleared her throat again before adding, "And that's what we have really." With a smile she sat back down in her chair.

Turning over to the first group of girls Edvard listened attentively as Amelia summarized what each of them thought of the Pluto situation. Looking over at Laura he said "Dwarf planets do exist dear, there are several in the solar system." "Many are on the fence Amelia so I understand your reasoning totally. But there is a classification which we have to follow and currently Pluto doesn’t fit the requirements.” Edvard commented before gazing over at the last girl. "Nerida I guess you are on the same track as Gideon that we should have a classification system based on common elements of all planets in the system."

"Well Professor, first off we definitely don't think it's fair that Pluto isn't considered a part of the group of planets anymore. I mean, size shouldn't matter, especially when Pluto has been part of that group for so long. If anything, scientists should base the definition around the group of planets as they were with Pluto included. Plus, now they have to change like everything...you know books and maps and charts. I think Pluto should get a retrial...and well, that's what our group discussed." With that, she glanced at her group members to make sure she covered everything and gave the Professor a nervous smile, indicating she had finished.

Smiling at Elle he nodded "Good discussion. Unfortunatley I don’t think the scientists cared that most books, maps and information has to be rewritten when they came up with the new classification system. Until a fairer planet classification system can be created Pluto will not get a retrial but I can promise that it will be reconsidered for planet status when one is created."

Turning to Tayla he was sort of baffled that they were the first group to voice an opinion for Pluto being downgraded to a dwarf planet status. Nodding Professor Roslund said "Interesting. I think you are the first group to see the status of dwarf planet versus planet as an okay classification and not something bad."

The last two to report on what they had discussed was Kurumi and Selina. Listening to Kurumi go over things like a logical debater Professor Roslund knew instantly that the quidditch tidbit he had overheard wasn’t being mentioned. He almost felt sad. Dismissing that thought he waited until the Gryffindor prefect was done before responding. "You two bring up good points. Given the current classification Pluto doesn’t fit into the planet category."

Going back up front Edvard started to recap "All right, everyone seems to have been discussing very thoroughly, which is very nice. What we can draw from the discussion is that most of you think that Pluto should be reinstated as a planet if a new classification system would be created that would focus on common elements of all nine solar system planets, currently though with the classification we now have then Pluto surely fits into the dwarf planet category and not the planet one." He paused to gather his thoughts.

"Now then since we celebrated Valentine ’s Day not so long ago I thought it would be good to speak a little about Venus. Does anyone know what other names Venus can be called in common tongue and which god it has gotten its name from?" Edvard had a feeling that he might have taught this before but he had no memory of it so he taught it again. Why did it feel like he forgot important things lately?

WhittyBitty 03-27-2012 06:42 PM

Oh, Venus. Amelia knew a bit about this planet, so she raised her hand right away. "It's called 'The Morning Star', because when it's position in the heavens as seen by us on earth is west of the sun, it "rises" before the sun does." If that made any sense at all. "It's also called 'The Evening Star', because when it's position in the heavens as seen by us is east of the sun, the sun "sets" before Venus does... so it's visible from earth after sunset." Hopefully she hadn't mixed any of that up.

"Venus was named after the Roman goddess of the same name. She represents love and beauty."

PadfootAndTheWolf 03-27-2012 07:16 PM

Glad that his mediocre presentation of his and Gideon's discussion went over well with Professor Roslund, August made small notes of the other students' ideas. He was actually pretty happy that the majority of the class wanted Pluto to be a planet too--despite Kurumi who recieved a quizzical look from the lion.

Now they were talking about Venus, and Valentine's Day, which was fitting. "Sir, anther name for Venus sometimes is Earth's Twin. Both planets are close in size and each have an atmosphere, even though Venus's is much thicker." He paused and then thought about the other half of the question, the one about the origin of the second planet's name. "Venus was named after the ancient Roman goddess of love and beauty, which is why you brought up the topic of Valentine's Day."

FireboltAvis88 03-27-2012 07:32 PM

Alyssa wondered why Professor Roslund was asking them about Venus again, since they had already covered it before but she figured that he had a purpose to his question, so just raised her hand and answered,"Professor, Venus' other names are Morning Star because at sunrise it appears in the east and Evening Star when its appears in the west at sunset. It is named after the Roman Goddess of Beauty and Love." Alyssa shook her head. Did someone just say what she had just said? She couldn't remember.

"Oh yeah, Venus is also sometimes called Earth's sister planet because they are similar in size and composition and some people call Venus' shadow as the morning star as Lucifer." Alyssa didn't know why she was rattling off this facts because they didn't even make sense, but right now everything felt so surreal.

Weasley174 03-27-2012 07:36 PM

Laura looked at the Professor and smiled. "But Professor if you was small you wouldn't want to be called a Dwaft and it's the same with planets, they are all planets." Laura said seriously and Venus. "Would another name be Williams?" Laura had heard her Grandmother say, Venus Williams was very good in her day so well Williams was the answer she was going with.

DuckyLinJi 03-27-2012 10:31 PM

After the discussions about if Pluto was a planet or not were over, Daichi snapped his head up from the table and blinked. It was over? Geez finally! Now he can try and participate again. It wasn't that he didn't like the subject or anything , it was because he was bad at these kind of discussions.

Running a hand to his hair, which was supposed to be blonde was now fading to a brownish color. Daichi raised his hand in the air as Professor Roslund asked them another question.

"I know that Venus is almost the same size as earth..." he said and still with his hand in the air he added and closed his eyes for a second to try and remember what he had read. Or better what he had heard. The question seemed vaguely familiar , as if they had it before. Hadn't he had the answer back then? He gave up when he couldn't remember and lowered his hand. . "Sorry sir, that's all i know...or remember"

Wait a second. Valentines day.. Venus.. romance yuck "OH SIR~! Isn't Venus the goddess of Love?" or something like that...

Nerida smiled and nodded, exactly what she had in mind! She thought for a moment, Venus was the Roman name of the Goddess Aphrodite...Venus is often called Earth's Sister or Twin because their size, mass, and gravity are about the same, it is also called The Morning Star, I believe because it "rises" ahead of the sun when its position is west of the sun and The Evening Star because the sun "sets" ahead of Venus when the position of Venus is east of the sun. Its got its name from the goddess, Venus, the goddess of love and beauty, and also from the Greek Goddess Aprohdite who's Roman name is Venus.

"It's the planet of love!" Ellie said before she could stop herself.

Waaait. Rewind. That's embarrassing.

"I mean... Erm." Ellie cleared her throat and started over. "It was named after the Roman goddess of love. And beauty." Merlin, what a title. Ellie wondered how amazing it would be to be a friggin' goddess of love AND beauty. She'd be tripping over all the men who fell at her feet!

... Anyway. "I've heard it been called the Morning Star." Yup. That's all. Returning back to her own little world now.

sweetpinkpixie 03-28-2012 02:31 AM

Kurumi sort of just held her tongue as the conversation about Pluto winded down. She wasn't really in the mood to debate some points that had been brought up, so she returned her attention to her parchment and scribbled down notes, missing Professor Roslund moving the lesson along. She only realized that he had done so when people were answering questions about Venus, and Kurumi wondered how she had missed the question in the first place. Listening, Kurumi thought that she could figure out what had been asked and raised her hand.

"Professor, Venus is also known as kinsei where I come from. You write the name using the character for 'gold' and the character for 'star.' There are also ways of saying it as well, using different characters, but that is the most common." He had asked for other names for the planet, right? "As other have said, it was named after the Roman goddess of love and beauty. In ancient times, the Roman people looked up to the skies and knew of seven bright objects - the sun, the moon and the five brightest planets. Venus happened to be the brightest in the sky, and it reminded them of the enchanting beauty of their goddess, so they named it after her." Probably. At least part of that was true, the rest she was sort of making up theory.

AlwaysDance 03-28-2012 02:55 AM

Venus!! That was a fun planet it was the beauty planet. Izzy wondered if the Roman goddess lived there. "Professor this planet is the beauty planet because it is named after Venus the Roman goddess of love and beauty, so I suppose it could be called the planet of beauty, but that isn't an actual nickname of Venus's. One of Venus's nicknames is the Morning Star," Isabelle explained with a smile. Maybe she would get enough money from her healing job and be able to travel to Venus and get something to make someone fall in love with her. That sounded like a good idea. Iz needed a boyfriend.

FearlessLeader19 03-28-2012 05:32 AM

Jory raised his hand. "Venus is also called the morning star because it kind of shines brightly. And it was named after the Roman Goddess of love,'' he said

He remembered learning this a Muggle school and he'd read it again in one of his text books.

TakemetotheBurrow 03-28-2012 12:22 PM

Ella didn't know any other common names for little Venus but she did know a bit about the planet's namesake. "Professor, Venus was named after Venus, the goddess of love. I don't quite see why though. I don't particularly think Venus is that lovely."

SilverDragon 03-28-2012 02:44 PM

Silvia raised her hand; she already knew about the planets being named after Roman gods and what each stood for. "Venus is named after the goddess of love and beauty. It's also called the morning star because you can sometimes see it in the sky right before dawn, even though it's not really a star. But you can see it at night too."

Its got its name from the goddess, Venus, the goddess of love and beauty, and also from the Greek Goddess Aprohdite who's Roman name is Venus.

"Very good Nerida, you seem to know a lot about Venus." Professor Roslund complimented. Maybe that was a common trait for all the girls in his classroom?

... Anyway. "I've heard it been called the Morning Star." Yup. That's all. Returning back to her own little world now.

The claw’s first outburst only signaled that she had a boyfriend, ignoring that Professor Roslund agreed. “Yes Venus is named after the goddess of love and is also called the morning star.”

"Very good Kurumi, it’s nice to hear what planets and other astronomical bodies are called in other cultures and also the story behind how it got its name. I’m taking that name to memory." Professor Roslund winked at the prefect before moving over to the next student.

?? For several seconds Edvard just stood and tried to make sense of what Izzy had just said. Thinking he did he replied "Right well Venus is definitely named after the goddess of love."

He remembered learning this a Muggle school and he'd read it again in one of his text books.

"Good Jory. Venus can also be called the morning star since it appears at dawn and usually shines brightly in the sky which makes it easy to spot if you stargaze." Professor Roslund smiled.

Ella didn't know any other common names for little Venus but she did know a bit about the planet's namesake. "Professor, Venus was named after Venus, the goddess of love. I don't quite see why though. I don't particularly think Venus is that lovely."

"Good Ella. Well beauty is in the eye of the beholder I guess so even if you don’t think Venus is lovely then the ancient Romans must have when they named her after the goddess of love." Edvard reasoned logically before adjusting his gaze to Silvia.

"Very good Silvia, Venus is correctly named after the goddess of love and beauty and can be seen both at night and just before dawn." Professor Roslund said with a nod to the claw.

Professor Roslund turned to the class "As the majority of you have answered Venus is named after the Roman Goddess of Love Aphrodite. Depending on whom you ask or where you live even Venus can be called kinsei, evening star, morning star or earth’s sister by the public. Venus is the second largest planet in the solar system and is the planet that can be seen best from the heavens after the sun and moon."

Pausing to allow the student’s to finish their notes he peered outside noting that it was another cloudless night outside. It would be perfect for stargazing; sadly though he had no such activity planned. Edvard did though have another thing in mind. Giving his class a shroud look he said "As the last activity of the lesson and to honor Venus I want you all to write a love poem to someone you like or admire it can be a crush, a professor, a family member or a friend for the remainder of the lesson. Before we break for the night I will allow for those of you who want’s to share your poems with the class."

OCC: The task is to construct/write a love poem to someone your character likes it can be as I stated above a crush/boyfriend/girlfriend, a professor, family member or friend. [

Amelia listened attentively as the Professor talked about Venus a bit more. She didn't take notes because she was pretty learned in Astronomy, but she was still interested in what he had to say.

But... oh no. Love poems?

She blushed furiously as she thought of the kind of love poem she would want to write Zayden. Still red, she opened up her notebook and grabbed a pencil so she could start writing her poem.

Alyssa blinked. The Professor wanted them to write a love poem to someone they liked? And they were supposed to read it out aloud in class? Alyssa knew to whom hers would be for, but to publicly read it out aloud. She blushed before picking up her quill and leaned over her parchment trying to get the words out.

Laura looked at the Professor and giggled as she took out her pen and wrote something down, this was going to be weird.

SPOILER!!: love poem

Oh my heart is bleeding,
when you go away,
I feel like crying,
everytime you leave,
you might be stupid,
you might be ugly,
but your my fake bro,
I love you.

Laura looked at the sheet, it wasn't like Aaron was going to read it and so she knew she'd be safe, though the Professor might be cross with her, but well he shouldn't expect a first year to write a love poem.

FireboltAvis88 03-29-2012 08:59 PM

Alyssa finished her love poem. It wasn't really hard to do but she meant every word of it.

Text Cut: My Love Poem

People think you're crazy, walking around in all your funny suits.
And I think the first time I met you, on your head you had fruits
But from the first moment I met you, I knew different you would be,
And that is why unlike all the other people, you mean all the world to me.

You make everyone laugh, when you say the funniest things
Even some of the Professors with their crazy weird mood swings
Nothing ever bothers you, cause happiness is your middle name
Though others would want you to change, I want you to remain the same.

You potty trained your owl, only someone like you would do,
You let it sleep in your dorm room, taking care of all it's poo.
Aaron Roberts, your face is the one I look forward to seeing every day.
What happens in the future, I hope from me, you'll never go away.

You are my Sun, my Moon, all the planets and stars in the sky,
If you were to ever leave me, I would surely die.
Your children I hope someday to have with you
I love you Aaron Roberts, I hope you love me too.

TakemetotheBurrow 03-29-2012 09:28 PM

Ella shrugged. The professor was right after all, beauty was definitely in the eye of the beholder. But wait...WHAT? They were now going to write love poems?! Ella had never written a poem let alone a love poem. Pulling her notebook towards her, she drummed her fingers on the empty page trying to think of what she wanted to say. At least she knew who it was for, that was a start.

SPOILER!!: Poem
Quote:

You're the one that I met by the lake.
You waved hello and your smile did make
Me feel quite happy and in return
Your kindness to me did you earn
A hug, a friend, a promise to be
Alway here like that day by the tree.

Ella reread the poem to herself and had to hold back her laughter. She was definitely not a poet. She also didn't plan on reading the poem aloud to the class...nor would she be giving it to a certain first year Gryffindor. No. That would be far too embarrassing!

DuckyLinJi 03-29-2012 10:38 PM

Because i'm bad at writing poems and....Daichi is just weird so yeah ^^

Daichi smiled brightly after hearing his answer had been correct and jotted down the words he hadn't seemed to have remembered when he had tried to answer the Professor's question and layed his quill down when he was finished. He looked at his watch and saw it was almost time to go so the Slytherin leaned back in his chair...

Only to move forward again when he heard the next words. They had to write a POEM?! Daichi blushed although he did not know why. So far only two people had made him blush and they didn't even know that! The shop assistant at Madam Malkins ...though he had figured he had had a fever back then ahem and....Kurumi. He liked it how she cared for him whenever he needed help and actually listened. Yes, he admitted to himself that he had a tiny crush on the Prefect but... he was in no way going to admit it out loud!

Grabbing another piece of his parchment, Daichi dipped the quill in the ink and smiled as he knew for which love he would write a poem about. Problem was, he was baaaaad at making poems. Maybe he could jumble up some song lyrics from the very very old days?

Shrugging his shoulders, Daichi went for it.

SPOILER!!: Poem....nah not really

"Oh Ducky You're so fine,
You're so fine you blow my mind.
Hey Ducky
Hey Ducky
Oh Ducky You're so Fine,
You're so Fine You Blow My Mind
Hey Ducky
Hey Ducky"

Okay WHY he ended up writing Ducky instead of one of the other two names he was previously thinking about was a mystery to him as well. But who cared, he loved ducks so mweh.

Wait wha?... poem writing?

The Ravenclaw could feel himself shrink in his seat. Nevermind the fact this activity would expose something he was keeping under wraps for some time now, but the very task of coming up with words written in rhythm and rhyme was as excruciating for him as a trip to the dentist. Hand goes up worriedly "Professor, is there an alternative to poem writing?... like maybe find a song instead?" because really his logical brain isnt wired for something like this.
