Once again you find yourself on the fifth floor for another lesson in Ancient Runes. Only this time there is no Professor Jenkins to welcome you into the classroom instead you see a note pinned to the door.
Quote:
My apologies for not being here to greet you but a slight problems has arisen. I shall be there as soon as I get it sorted out. In the meantime can you please take your seats quickly and quietly. No fooling around! Prefects are in charge until I get there.
Upon entering the classroom you will notice that this time there are desks along with chairs. But it's still not your ordinary classroom, for along the back wall you will notice a row of trees. Each with a label to tell you what they are. Rowan tree, Apple tree, Maple tree, Oak tree and a Willow tree. Again there is a reason why those trees are there. Also in the back corner is a water feature. There is no significance to this, just that Professor Jenkins likes the sound of running water.
ooc: The class will start in approximately twelve hours or so and remember the rules.
CLASS HAS STARTED!!! Please do not announce your late arrival just pretend that your charrie has been here the whole entire time.
Jotting down a few notes and underlining a thing here and there, Kurumi set her quill down and went to the front to grab a pieace of wood and was about to return to her seat when another small question crossed her mind. "Professor, is there a noticeable difference between the two methods? Using the incantation as opposed to doing it by hand I mean." Using magic as opposed to doing it by hand. Seemed like there might be something different.
*****
Finishing up her conversation with Professor Jenkins, Kurumi returned to her seat and set her piece of wood on the table. Now...which rune did she carve? Forget which method she was going to use, she needed to figure out which rune first. Opening up her textbook, Kurumi flipped through the pages looking for something that could help her when her eyes fell on a particular rune and suddenly the prefect realized that she didn't want to make a rune for herself...but for someone else. She would just figure out how to make them accept it later.
"Sowilo..." she whispered to herself as she read over its meaning. Yep. This would do.
Now...which method to use? She had used Intaglio during her second year and performed a few other carving methods before, but using a gorging tool was a little foreign to her. That pretty much decided it. The entire point of school was challenging yourself and trying out new things so that you could learn after all.
Using her quill first, Kurumi drew a very light drawing of the run on the piece of wood before picking up her tool and setting it against the wood. Against the grain, right?
Oliver scratched his chin as he contemplated the Prefect's question. "No. I don't think so. It's more of a personal thing for me. I believe the Runes' magic works better if it's pure." Sometimes it was hard to explain this to people. "Does that make sense?"

Does it matter which rune we decide to practice carving out? And is there any technique that you suggest we use while carving?" Lily figured she had to ask, since she didn't want to get in trouble and also had never carved anything before.
He gave the Ravenclaw a warm smile. "You can choose whatever rune you like." Actually he preferred if they practiced doing more than just one rune but it was okay if they only wanted to do one. Oliver held up the gouge tool.
"The blade is quite sharp so watch your fingers. You just need to run it along the wood. The tool will carve the shape out that you direct it to with your hand."
Oliver walked amongst the students as they practiced and he was pleased to see the good work that they were doing. "Nice work all of you." he said as moved back to his desk. "There is another stage to making a rune set but we'll go over that next class. Also I am going to show you how to do magic with runes." So perhaps they might be a little more enthusiastic next lesson.
"If you wish to keep practicing then by all means you may do so, otherwise class is over. I'll post homework on the noticeboard later."

Oliver took his wand out of his holster and with a sharp flick in the direction of the box, the lid popped open to reveal pieces of wood inside.
"For those of you who said 'Intaglio' was the incantation are correct. Personally I prefer to either carve my runes into the wood using a gouge tool or to burn the runes by using hot iron." He replaced his wand back into its holster and perched against his desk again. "The runes have their own magic and I prefer not to taint them with other kinds. But that is only my opinion. If you wish to use the incantation then that is totally up to you."
He pulled a satchel out of his drawer and laid it out onto the desk. "We won't be practicing with the hot iron today." Oliver wasn't sure how much he could trust the students yet. They seemed well behaved, but put a red hot iron branding tool in their hands and Merlin only knew what could happen.
"There are some gouge tools up here that you can use. So I'd like you all to come up the front grab yourself a piece of wood and gouge tool if you are using it and then return to your desk and practice carving your runes into the wood. If you need any help then please just raise your hand and I'll come over and assist you."
ooc: Just RP your character carving into their piece of wood. Points will be awarded for participation.
Intag-- what?
Obviously that was something Vickers missed, which he scribbled down on his parchment to do further research on. He then stood up and retrieved a gouging tool and wood to carve the runes then returned to his seat.
Flipping open his textbook, he looked over the runes trying to see which is the simplest he can start off with.

Alyssa picked up her gouging tool cleaned it up and returned it back to where she had taken it from. While she was up front, she decided to take another piece of wood, so that she could practice making another rune. Then she returned back to her desk and picked up her bag. She made her way to the Professor. "Thank you for another interesting lesson. Uh...Professor for the homework will we have to use a gouging tool? If yes, would it be okay if I borrow one of yours? I'll return it once I'm done with it."Alyssa asked the Professor.

Amelia was satisfied with her little Rune carving as she blew the dust off of it. It was something she was proud of, and it made her feel good that she had actually made it. Maybe that made her sound lame. :/
Looking around, she saw other people making more than one Rune, and she wasn't sure if she was supposed to do that as well or not. She didn't remember being instructed to. She hoped that her one lone carving was good enough, and she'd do more if she was asked to.
Hearing the Professor speak now, she had her question answered. She decided that she could always practice on her own time, so she started packing her stuff up. "Thank you for the lesson, Professor! It was really interesting. Can I borrow one of these tools for carving more Runes?" If not, she could easily use her wand instead.

"Yes, yes of course you may take the tool with you. You're going to need it for the next lesson anyway." Oliver smiled at the two girls and waved goodbye to them.

Minerva packed up her things and started to head out of class. 'Thanks professor for an interesting lesson." Runes still was one of her hardest classes, but at least she understood this professor that did help.

Kurumi thought over what Professor Jenkins had just told her, trying to sort of break apart his sentences to figure out the hidden and deeper meaning behind them. Magic works better when it is pure, which meant that Professor Jenkins found value in the earthy feeling of carving wood by hand as opposed to using magic for a quick fix. Kurumi sort of felt that the concept was a little too mature for her understanding of magical theory, but she sort of got a foundation. Sort of. "I...think it does, professor," she said with a small laugh. She was being honest, it made sense, but her understanding was still a little hazy. "Magic always leaves traces, no matter the spell, so in a sense the wood becomes marked or engraved upon...which I think is what you were referring to with the notion of purity."
If THAT made any sense.

Oh? There was more to this process AND they were going to perform magic with the runes next lesson?! YAY! Ancient Runes had been one of her favorite subjects after her first year and second years, but that opinion had gone down during her third and fourth for various reasons. You, Professor Jenkins, were helping the fifth year rediscover what it was about the subject that she liked. Her piece of wood still in its block form, Kurumi placed it in her bag and decided that she would cut them out into smaller pieces later.
Taking one of the tools and adding it to her bag as well, Kurumi banished any wood shavings left on her table and then approached Professor Jenkins once more. "Thank you for the lesson...and for appeasing my curiosity." Which seemed to be growing more and more each term.

Lily smiled back up at the professor as he answered her question. "Ok, thank you." Now to get to work. Lily chose to carve out two runes. First Kenaz and then Gebo. The ravenclaw set to work, carefully taking the gouge tool and carving out Kenaz into the wood. It looked kinda lopsided, but since it was only her first time carving, Lily thought she had done a decent job.
Now on to Gebo. Lily liked this rune, for no particular reason. However carving it was a different story. It seemed like an easy rune to carve, but as Lily started carving it, she couldn't make a straight line. It just wasn't working... Frustrated at herself, the little claw put down her tool and took a little break. It wasn't working and she knew that there was only one way to calm down. After a bit of time, she tried again. This time she managed to get one straight line as part of the X shape, but the other line didn't stay straight. By now the class had ended and Lily was almost at the end of her string. So she decided to pack up.
Once she had all of her stuff together, she walked up to the professor. "Did you want the work we did in class? And can I borrow the gouge tool for the homework?" Lily figured that her frustration was pretty evident on her face, but she did what she could to try and hide it. She figured that this homework would be done after she had calmed down.

Ella smiled, packing up her things. The class seemed to go pretty quickly and she had done a semi decent job using the gouge tool for the first time. All in all, not too shabby. She smiled at the Professor on the way out, hoping he wasn't as annoyed as he had been at the start of the lesson. "Bye Professor Jenkins!"

Amelia smiled as she was told that she could borrow the tool. Awesome. She could use it for her homework. "Thank you Professor." She got up now and left the room.

Nerida looked down at her runes, they were good, she had messed up on Sowilo and a few others but they would have to do until she could redu them. She looked down at her notes she had why the Rowan tree, Apple tree, Maple tree, Oak tree and a Willow tree were best to make runes and why the Professor liked using them. She said Thanks Professor Jenkins, wonderfull class. She then collected her things and left the classroom.
