Hey Ju 01-29-2012 05:15 PM

Sophie paid close attention to most of the story, but by the end she had lost it completely. She was actually enjoying it, but when it got too long she started thinking about other things and missed the rest of it. She shook her head just in time to hear Professor Jenkins asking if anyone had questions. Well, she didn't, since she hadn't listened to the full story and was obviously not going to ask him to repeat it.

Some other students were already asking questions, so she decided to pay attention to the replies.

Kimalia 01-29-2012 06:08 PM

After the lovely history lesson, a term she used loosely, all Kimalia wanted to do was get her homework assignment, jot it down, and then fly her way out.. oh wait, they're still indoors.. Well, all she wanted to do was get started on her homework.

Until then however, Kimalia was laying on her side jotting down the questions everyone had asked getting ready to collect the answers in her loaded notebook with parchment.

ShadowButterfly 01-29-2012 06:47 PM

She wrote down what the teacher and other students said said and waited to hear their homework assignment.

"It's Ehwaz and it means transportation. It could be a horse, car, plane, boat or other vehicle. It also means movement and change for the better along with harmony, trust and loyalty. An ideal marriage or partnership." Yeah they weren't that easy to interpret.

SPOILER!!: The clever students

“Okay, very good most of you have touched on the meanings of particular runes. Now let me tell you how they started.” He probably should have warned them that this wasn't exactly a short story.

“Odin was a god. He was the mightiest god in fact. One day he rode his horse until he reached the world ash Yggdrasil.” Oliver gestured towards the tree in the centre of the room. He’d told them there was significance to the objects he had placed in there. “There he saw three women sitting at a well. They were busy spinning threads and weaving the garment of fate for gods and men. Thereupon, the three women revealed to the god many secrets of the distant past and foretold the far-off future.”

“But Odin was eager to learn even more about the worlds. So the women referred him to the giant Mimir, who dwells at the spring of wisdom, whose nourishing liquids feed the world tree. Odin rode to Mimir. But the giant did not want to give his knowledge so easily. Therefore, Odin pledged his left eye to the mighty one. Then Mimir showed him the mysteries of this world.” He looked around at the students to see if any of them had fallen asleep. He loved this story even after hearing it and telling it about a hundred times.

“Still, Odin was not fully satisfied in his quest for wisdom. On the way back through the desolate heath, he came upon a tree. It was the Fogmoon and the frosty twilight permeated the landscape. Suddenly, his coat was caught in the branches of the tree. Odin hung between heaven and earth. In vain, he tried to free himself. His white horse "Sleipnir", also called "Glidehoof," circled around him, whinnying. His ravens "Hugin" and "Munin"-thought and memory- flew around him agitatedly and brought the world's thoughts to him.”

“Odin struggled with himself for the ultimate wisdom. Nine nights he hung on the world tree. His inner being gradually grew clearer and more luminous. Now he finally found the symbols of life's noblest values. He bent down deeply from the tree. Groaning with extreme exertion, he took up the signs and cut them into the trunk with his sword. Rune she called these sacred glyphs, because they whisper wisdom to the initiated. Now, Odin was possessed by the mighty ability to free himself from the tree. He fell down, jumped up, called his steed and rode back to Valhalla, the castle of the gods.”

“Odin-Wotan proceeded to initiate his divine companions into the lore of the runes. He also gave this gift to his most loyal men. Men who lived according to his laws and fought alongside him for the cosmic universal order and against the dark forces. Chosen women were also instructed in the runic arts by the god. Now the signs became the sacred writing of the Germanic people.”

Oh Merlin he could do with a drink after that but he was not finished yet. The students were probably bored but he wanted them to understand. He had noticed quite a few confused looks.

“So Odin gained his wisdom from the Runes and you can as well. As I said before Runes do not predict the future in the 'fortune telling' sense, but it is an Oracle which gives counsel to the reader, offering an analysis to the problem, as well as possible outcomes and solutions on one’s spiritual path. As each Rune can have several meanings, which can easily appear cryptic and too broad, it is best to be specific in asking questions, using your intuition to let the Runes speak to you. Now it is best to have a basic understanding of each Rune, because the more one uses them, the more one is likely to have better understanding from the readings. So you’ve probably guessed what your homework is going to be.” He grinned at them. Oh he had been so looking forward to giving out homework.

“But before I go handing out your homework asignment. Does everyone have a better understanding of the runes now? Is there any questions you might want to ask?”

Oakey leaned forward as he listened to the tale of Odin, Mimir, The Three Fates, and Yggdrasil. Mouth gaping open in pure awe as this tale was told. He retreated his mouth back and sat up straight when he heard the word homework. Oakey didn't want Homework, he wanted to hear more about Odin.

Professor? Will we be hearing more about Odin later in the year? If not he'd check the library for more of these stories. They would have to be in the Library wouldn't they.

"Professor you mentioned that each rune has several meanings and that we have to be specific in what we want, and that we have to let our intuition be our guide. But how can we tell whether it is our intuition that is doing the guiding or whether it's our need to be logical, that is making our decision?" Alyssa hoped that her question made sense.

"Believe me you will know." Oliver said with a chuckle. "Your intuition is always right and it is always the first, when asking a question, answer that will come to you. And you will know it in your heart which decision you should make. Our logic always comes in second to try and make us second guess ourselves." He scratched the back of his neck. "The runes will speak to you so long as you allow them to speak to you, by keeping an open mind."

This was all new to him, and although he had gone over his textbook before, he found it difficult to understand as he had little to no point of reference. But the story-- the explanations-- made sense to him, and started to give him some idea as to what this world of Runes was all about.

Did he have any questions? "Professor, will you be teaching us the mechanics of how predi-- forecasting is done?" He was now very curious how that goes.

Oliver nodded his head at the Ravenclaw. "We most certainly will. First we need to make our own runes which hopefully will be next lesson and then we can practice with some runic spreads."

She wondered as to mysteries were opened to Odin by the giant Mimir, how Odin was caught on the Foogmoon tree and many more. She frowned, nodded and tried to absorb the story's whole point. As she did so, she looked at the tree in the middle of their classroom. Why was she feeling some kind of strong force from when the story was in progress? She felt so weird.

Although she knew that she was just being ignorant, when Professor Jenkins asked them for questions, Beezus raised her hand, "Professor.." she uttered as she held her head up. "How did Odin knew or became aware of the different signs that signified the Rune alphabet?"

"While he hung in the tree, Odin opened himself up so that his inner being was clear and the runes came to him. Whether Odin, himself created them or they were sent to him is unknown. But once the runes appeared, Odin now posessed the wisdom of the symbols and he passed them onto others." He hoped that helped.

After finally getting them done, he looked around blankly at students who were asking questions. Any questions at all? Alright then. "How do you read the Elder Futhark when each rune has different meanings?" asked the boy half-raising his hand. His voice was louder so Professor Jenkins can hear him clearly.

He looked over to the young Slytherin. "When reading the Elder Futhark for messages, it's the same as reading the alphabet. When reading it for yourself, that's when you do a runic spread. You ask the runes a question and let's say you're doing a three runic spread, you pull three runes from a bag and lay them out. Without going into too much detail because we will be doing this later but the meanings on the runes you pulled out will help you with the question you asked."

She scribbled notes onto her parchment, wanting to make sure to have things put in her own words so she'd understand her notes better later. She nodded when the explanation was done and smiled. "Thanks Professor. I understand it better now."

Giving the Hufflepuff a smile, Oliver replied. "I'm glad to hear that."

Ahhh kids. Everything had to be in the here and now with them. "Because they may be old but they are still used to today. Our wands were created thousands of years ago and we still use them, do we not?"

Looks like Odin had a fan. Well besides Oliver himself. "We will indeed."

He got to his feet. "Okay if there are no mor questions, you may all go. Homework will be posted on the notice board later today."

TakemetotheBurrow 01-30-2012 01:47 AM

Ella gathered her things and stood up, looking around once more at the tree and fountain. Classes at Hogwarts were much more awesome than those in the muggle world. She wondered if the room would look the same next class. She liked it this way and hoped it would. She smiled as she headed for the door. "Thanks Professor! See you next class."

FireboltAvis88 01-30-2012 02:04 AM

Alyssa listened as the Professor explained, jotted down some notes into her journal before packing up her things and getting up. Making her way to the entrance of the classroom, Alyssa walked up to the Professor and said,"Thank you Professor for today's lesson. It was very enlightening, and I look forward to your next class."

With a smile, Alyssa left the classroom and made her way back to the Common Room.

Uncle Moose 01-30-2012 02:17 AM

Huzzah :woot: More Odin! Oakey was pleased to hear it. Thank you Professor, I definitely can't wait for the next class then. picking himself up off the grass. He stood there for a moment and looked at the tree thinking to himself. Maybe I'll go do some extra research on Odin anyways. Oakey thought to himself, But it'll have to be on Wednesday, I've got to much going on to get to the Library any other day. swinging his bag around his back he took off back to his common room.

Somnium 01-30-2012 02:30 AM

Taylor got up from the grass and dusted herself off. She picked up her bag and started for the door but she then stopped close to the professor, "Thank you for the lesson, Professor, it was very interesting and i am looking forward to the next lesson and the next time i have a chance to learn something from you." Taylor didn't feel like saying more since her shyness was coming back so she quickly said, "Have a good day." and left.

ShadowButterfly 01-30-2012 02:36 AM

She stood up off the grass and put her bag over her shoulder,"Thanks for the lesson, Good day professor." She walked out quietly.

SilverDragon 01-30-2012 02:55 AM

Silvia stood up and gathered her things, slipping her notes into her bag, and then headed for the door. "Thanks, professor," she said. "Bye."

Kimalia 01-30-2012 03:33 AM

Oh looks like they were free to go now. Although the history lesson on runes was a little boring to Kimalia, she did quite enjoy resting in the grassy classroom and found it difficult to remove herself off her comfortable position. Did she have any questions? Hmm, not really. Dusting herself off of any dirt she smiled genuinely ,"Thanks for the first lesson, Professor Jenkins, take care of yourself." With a wave she walked out happily.

Frankie 01-30-2012 04:11 AM

Autumn packed her things away, she was disspointed this lesson was over she loved it! the room gave her a warm feeling!
"Good bye professor, the lesson was good, thank you."
She picked up her bag and walked out of the classroom.

Kurumi had sort of kept quiet during most of the question and answer period, choosing to take notes rather than ask anything herself. Just as a thought came to her and she was about to raise her hand, Professor Jenkins called the lesson and everyone was dismissed. Frowning for just a moment, Kurumi began to pack her things up and was about to say thank you when she decided to just throw caution to the wind and ask.

"Professor, I actually have a question, if that is alright," she said as she approached him, dusting off her robes a bit from all the sitting on the ground. "When we try to use the magic hidden in runes, we need out wands assist us." Well, that had been her experience so far at least, using a wand first to cast a spell on the rune or the rune and wand were used together at the same time to accomplish whatever it was they were trying to do. "Is the principle behind wandless magic somehow related to runes? Like...can a wizard harness the power of a rune without needing their wand or even the rune itself?"

Deezerz 01-30-2012 05:18 AM

Kennedy had somewhat enjoyed the lesson. It would have been a whole lot better if they had not lost fifteen points. Now he had to go deal with a certain young snake. SIGH. He tucked his notes into his bag, as well as his quills. Usually, he would be happy and looking forward to homework, but now...bleh.

He stood up and adjusted his robes. "Thanks for the lesson, Professor Jenkins," and for taking points from Slytherin...not. He gave the man a nod and turned to leave. He needed to stop being so bitter about this. They would definitely recover those points. Yeah. That thought made him feel better.

Now...where was that snake?

Magical Soul 01-30-2012 05:41 AM

Well. That wasn't nearly as boring or uncool lesson as Louisa had thought it would've been. The girl needed to get some sleep anyway. She stood up slowly, stuffing the small piece of parchment that she'd used to take some notes into her shoulder bag and slid it onto her shoulder.

Casting a smile sideways at the man, Louisa nodded, "Have a nice day, professor Jenkins." Since he'd called her by her first name, she might as well acknowledge him with a name. It was a privilege given by the young eagle.

Bazinga 01-30-2012 06:59 AM

Minerva got her things. "Thank you Professor for a great lesson." and she headed out the door.

Symphora 01-30-2012 07:04 AM

Gustav got up and packed his things,"Thank you Professor, see you next time.." He smiled and left.

"Of course Miss Hollingberry." Oliver waved and smiled at the students leaving the room and then turned his attention to the Prefect. He had just opened his mouth to comment when she continued on.

"We're actually going to be covering this later in the term." He grinned at her. "So many witches and wizards think it's the wand that makes the wizard or witch. Not true of course. The magic runs in our blood and the wand is the medium which perfoms the actual act. So it is with runes. Of course there is a little more to it." Did that help?

Jessiqua 01-30-2012 07:50 AM

Zhenya packed up all her things and pulled herself up off the floor. She walked up and said "thanks for the lesson Professor. I really did learn a lot," and gave him a big smile bbefore leaving the classroom.

Kurumi nodded. It was sort of a relief to hear that, although perhaps relief wasn't the right word and refreshing was more along the lines of the Gryffindor's thoughts. "Yet another aspect of magic that is forgotten or taken advantage of it sounds like," she nodded with a small smile, somewhat relating their conversation to her answer earlier in class. "I'll hold off with other questions until we discuss the topic in class. I am sure that most of them will be answered then" Wouldn't be fair to get too much of a preview now and ruin the man's lesson plan now would it? Still, Kurumi's curiosity was written all over her face. She was one of the easier to read among the student body and not just because of her hair.

Kurumi tugged on the strap of her bag and eyed the door. She should probably let the man rest and get going on to her next lesson. "Thank you, professor. Certainly have a lot to think about," she said, offering one last bow before slowly making her way towards the door.

Then she faced him and walked to where he was. "Does that mean we ought to believe that there is indeed an inner being to all of us?" If so, then was her inner being insisting that the tree in the classroom was creepy? Because it was totally bugging her senses.

He didn't think he'd enjoy his first Ancient Runes class. Messer jolted down some notes before he heard the Professor said the lesson was come to an end. He put all his belongings back into his bag and slid it onto his shoulder. The professor said that if they don't have any question they can leave the classroom. He didn't have any more question for now.

He stood up "Thank you for the lesson. Good day, Professor Jenkins." Messer said before he left the classroom.

Lily finished up her notes as the class was ending. She got up, packed up her things and headed towards the door. Swinging by the professor on her way out, Lily thanked him. "Thanks professor, it was a good lesson and I learned a lot about runes." After that, Lily proceeded to the door, and headed off back to the common room to change her books.
