| | Ancient Runes Final - Field Trip As you step through the portal, you find yourself in a wooded area surrounded by many trees. This is Buckinghamshire, a county that has long been associated with witchcraft and magic. As you walk along the path, you will notice clumps of Willow trees, twisted old Hazels, delicate Elders, gnarled Hawthorn and Blackthorn, ancient English Oaks, green Alders and Aspen trees.
This is the perfect place for you to find that special piece of wood to make your rune set. Take your time and walk amongst the trees to attune yourself to which wood would best suit you. Once you have worked that out, please choose a windfallen branch (a branch that has fallen off the tree naturally). Please do not break or cut any branches off the trees. You will need a branch of at LEAST three feet long.
Once you have found your branch, head over to the workbench that has been set up and create your rune set. There are tools that you may use if you are not confident in using magic. You will find saws to cut your branch (I recommend at least 2 inch discs), a gouge tool and red ochre paint for those who don't want to use their blood. ooc rules: I want at least ten posts for this exercise. Starting with posting in the Groundskeeper's hut, coming through the portal, finding your branch and then making your runes using the steps detailed in the previous lessons. You have one week to complete the exercise. This final is worth 30 points. |

Ira walked back to the work bench with the oak branch in her hands. She noticed that there were several tools to help her in carving the rune. There was also an empty spot for her to start working. She plopped down, placing her branch on the work bench in front of her and her bag on the ground.
Ira first removed her textbook from her bag and looked inside for instructions. Ira took out a pencil and drew twenty three little lines equally apart so that she would have twenty four disks. This itself was taking so much time. She knew she had to hurry.
Ira found the instructions written in her textbook, and followed them. grabbed a disk and got ready to carve the first rune.

Once Lily had gotten her bearings and had stopped her finger from bleeding, she had to get down to work. She started wandering around trying to find a branch that was long enough. She passed a couple tree branches that didn't seem long enough. Eventually she found her willow branch that was long enough to get her runes from. Lily turned after she had picked up her branch and made her way back to the rest of the class and found a workbench. Now she had to get to work with cutting the branch.

Last thing to do now. Jory took out his pocket knife from his bag. He was going to need a good set of blood for this. Taking a deep breath, he pricked his index finger and immediately blood began to appear.
The Puff started with Fehu, smearing his blood completely over the rune while repeating its name. "Fehu...Fehu." He did the same for the runes until he came to Gebo, when he realised he'd need to prick another of his fingers.
He poked his middle finger on his left hand this time and continued. "Gebo..Gebo,'' he repeated. "Wunjo...Wunjo...'' "Hagalaz...Hagalaz..." all the way to Eihwaz.
He pricked his middle finger now and continued. "Perthro...Perthro...'' "Algiz...Algiz'' "Mannaz...Mannaz'' until he reached Ingwaz. "This'll be the last finger,'' he thought as he saw he had only two runes remaining. He pricked his thumb and continued. "Dagaz...Dagaz'' and finally "Othala...Othala...''
And it was done! Jory couldn't help feeling pleased despite the throbbing of his fingers.

The fourth year Gryffindor continued to walk around the base of all the large trees, noticing that the voices and sounds of the other students crunching around the forest floor began to subside as each of them began to explore their own paths amongst the magical woods. It really was such an entrancing place.
After a few minutes search August came across an old, gnarled Willow, who's branches were sweeping the ground and reaching out with the assistance of the slight breeze. It was perfect. The Gryffindor felt as if the rope like branches were reaching out to pull him towards the old Willow.
This was definately the tree he was going to use. Now he just needed to find a branch that had already fallen.

Ira now had all 24 Runes discs. They looked pretty darn good according to her. She now just needed to carve into the wood and then use her blood on them.
She cleaned as much dust and dirt she could on the work surface, and then thought of what Rune she wanted to do first... Should she go with the order given in textbook? Or maybe in reverse order? Or maybe just random order?
She pondered over it, and finally decided that going in order with the textbook would be much better idea, so that she could keep track of which ones she had done, and which ones she had to do.
So Ira picked up the first disc and decided to start with the First Aett, the rune Fehu. It represented success, good luck and hope. Reading from her textbook, she picked up the gouging tool that was lying on the work bench, and following the design on the page, and proceeded to carve out the rune, FEHU. She thought that it was better to manually do it now for the first time, and maybe she could use magic later on.
As she carved it, she concentrated on what the rune represented and murmured it's name over and over again as she made it. "Fehu... Fehu..." Once she was done carving the rune, she laid it aside and picked up the next piece of wood to work on.
1 down and 23 more to go.

| Post 8 Onto the last Aett Toothless - Napoleon of Crime - Gryffinclaw - Owl Emissary - Pirate Auror - DoctorDonna When Gideon moved onto the third and final Aett, he continued using the intaglio spell to use magic to carve them. It seemed to be going halfway decently for the first few. However he struggled on the Mannaz rune, it just wasn't coming out right through the spell carving. And not even a small thing...something that might effect the casting of the rune when eventually used because the carving wasn't matching the supposed shape on the small item.
Guess it was one for the trash pile.
Thankfully he had another to try on, deciding to switch back to the gouge tool after returning his wand to his pocket. Gideon felt he had more control at times that way so maybe it would turn out better. And in a way he apparently did for the hand-carved Mannaz turned out a lot better. Back to the manual way he guessed, the Gryffindor moving on to the next.

Once her first rune had been carved out and finished, Ira moved on to the second rune, Uruz which indicated great strength, & sexuality. This one was shaped like a small 'n' without the line. “Intaglio!” she cast the spell again to carve the shape into the branch and repeated the rune name twice. Again, this rune came out just right. She placed the second rune beside the first and took another disk.
Now moving on to the third rune. Merlins! She had to now hurry! Many others were close to finishing.. And here she was, still at the First Aett itself.
She consulted her textbook again. With another disk in front of her, the second year pointed her wand to carve the Thurisaz rune which signified discipline, and pain and sacrifice for rewards.. Yup, it came out right! So in the same way, she carved out the fourth rune, Ansuz too. She remembered that Ansuz represented guidance, creation and growth.
So here she was, 4 runes carved, 20 more to go!

Who ever would have thought that looking for a fallen branch would be hard? But it certainly was proving to be for the fourth year Gryffindor. As he walked around the trunk of the large tree he found a few of them but they were foreign to this particular tree, most not even willow.
Finally a large branch was propped against a boulder and Auggie picked it up. He inspected the thing from all angles and after seeing nothing wrong with it he took it over to the base of the tree where he sat down. Pulling out his wand the boy began to use the severing charm on it beginning to create 2 inch disks from the thing.

Oakey stepped through, but this time with his eyes open. His eyes grew wider as he took in the scenery, This place was beautiful. So many tree's to choose from. He stood still and starred for a moment or two then he realized what he had said to the Groundskeeper just before he stepped through. Aw Dangit! I called him Merdog again! He palmed his hand to his face and shook it. Mr. Murdoch would understand, right?

Sierra blinked as she reappeared in the new location. She'd done it right, she could tell, by the fact that the others were walking around nearby. She slowly peered around the area, noting that the few trees she could recognize were rune-making trees. Of course.
Blahhh.
Sierra wasn't the fondest of Ancient Runes, but she'd do this for the house points. The grade, too.
With a sigh, she started absentmindedly walking around, looking on the ground for a suitable stick to use. A few seconds later, she paused, allowing a frown to creep across her face. Was all the good wood taken?! Surely not. Not with trees everywhere. She had a feeling Jenkins would have a fit if she diffindo'ed off a good piece of wood.
Walking around some more, she kicked at a few tiny twigs before pausing in an attempt to come up with a better plan.

| Post #3, A Beautiful Alder Tree Mom says I have no sense of direction, so I packed my bags and right.
Oakey started his search for the perfect Tree Branch, but which one should he go for. He walked past a few Aspen and Elder tree's that other students were collecting their branches from and came across a grand looking Oak tree. He starred up at it and though. It's perfect! It's an Oak tree and I'm, Oakey He began wandering around it to find a good branch when he spotted one last tree. It wasn't to far from the Oak and it looked Magnificent. It's trunk spread out and branched off into 3 no 4 different directions almost as if it was a blossoming flower. Something about this tree told him to ignore the Oak and to take a branch from it.
Oakey did just that. He walked over to the tree and found a good branch to use. As inspected it for a while and noted that the inside of the branch, the wood was a reddish color. He carried it back with him to one of the benches and set it down in front of him.

| Post 9 Finishing the last runes and gathering the stain Toothless - Napoleon of Crime - Gryffinclaw - Owl Emissary - Pirate Auror - DoctorDonna With all of the runes now cut and carved it was time for the sealing of the runes. And as much as he wasn't squirmish over using blood, Gideon realised it might take more then one cut finger to do them all. Esepcially with enough blood to properly cover the runes like they were made to believe was needed. Would the ockra paint effect it that much?
The Gryffindor debated which way to go, but finally retrieved some paint, adding it to a bowl to make using it easier. Taking it back to his work area, Gideon prepared for cutting himself once more seeing the cut from before had stopped and started clotting. He almost used the sharpened quill again, but seeing the saw, he lightly ran his finger along the blade, just hard enough to make a small, light cut. Then using his other fingers, he pressed either side of the cut as he held his hand over the bowl, the blood droplets joining the paint.

From his shady seat on the floor of the forest at the base of the willow, Auggie continued to chop the dried branch into small disks. They were beginning to accumulate in a pile in his lap and when he had roughly thirty, he stopped. Extra were cut just in case.
And now he needed to start carving the runes. Searching for his textbook in his school bag, the fourth year found the entire Elder Futhark listed. His wand pressed against his palm as he cast the carving incantation. "Intaglio."
Concentration. 'Fehu...Uruz...Thurisaz...Ansuz...Raidho...Kenaz.. .'
Each rune was slowly carved, with as much precision the boy could muster.

| Post 10 Mixing the Stain and Painting the Runes Toothless - Napoleon of Crime - Gryffinclaw - Owl Emissary - Pirate Auror - DoctorDonna
When he thought he had enough added to the paint, Gideon put cloth and pressure on the cut to stop the bleeding. It wouldn't do any good to continue bleeding everywhere while moving on in the process of staining the runes. It took a few minutes to get it to stop, enough time to give him another small break after the exertion of manually carving the last aett with the gouge tool.
That fixed, he mixed the paint and blood with a supplied paintbrush until it seemed like a nice consistance. When he was done, Gideon began taking each of the runes one by one and painting them with the bloody ochre mixture. It took a few swipes a piece for good cover but he had enough to do it all and soon enough he was finished with his handmade rune set AND the final. Setting the runes aside to dry, the fifth year took the time he needed to wait to clean up his work area, returning all the tools he had used to the places he had taken them from.

All the concentration and scrunching of his brow was lot going on in such a quiet and still environment. He set his wand down for a second and rubbed his forearm, looking around. A bird was chirping from a high bough of the tree. It was a plesant sound.
After his short respite August needed to get back to work, there was no telling how much longer Professor Jenkins was going to allow them to stay here to work on their rune sets. Picking his wand back up the Gryffindor spoke the carving incantation again to begin. "Itaglio."
And let it start again... 'Gebo...Wunjo...Hagalaz...Nauthiz...Isa...Jera...' |

There were still 20 more runes left to carve. And she was already growing tired. Still she figured that it would be better if she could finish all soon, so then she could go and rest in her dorm.
So picking up the 5th disc, she repeated the procedure. The next rune was Raidho. It represented the overall life-path of a person and the changes in lifestyle.
With her wand, she cast the carving incantation. "Intaglio." And concentrated on the rune, all the while muttering softly, "Raidho... Raidho".
Now came the Kenaz rune. She carved it too, and it too came out almost perfect.
First Aett was almost completed. Taking a deep breath, she carved out two more runes, Gebo and Wunjo. And they too came out right. She had carved each rune slowly and with focus, and so they had come out good.
8 runes carved, 16 more to go...

More carvings. August was starting to wonder why there were so many different runes in a set. Well, all the seperate meanings and such of course but besides that. It was a lot of work to make them from scratch like this.
Continuing to concentrate hard on his task, the Gryffindor carved. 'Eihwaz...' They had used the one that sounded a lot like this one in order to get here. 'Perthro...Algiz...Sowilo...Tiwaz...Berkano...'
As he continued to carve each sign into the small wooden disk, he layed them gently in a pile on his right side. The half-finished pile was beginning to out number the plain disk pile. He was at least making some progress.

Ira had now reached the second Aett. She decided to take a few moments break. A break was definitely needed! So closing her textbook, and keeping the runes aside, she just sat there, looking at others.
After her few minutes break, she looked back at the textbook and barely stifled a yawn. This break hadn't refreshed her, but had rather done th exact opposite. She was now more sleepy than before!
She started with Hagalaz, and then Nauthiz.
She cast the spell with her wand, "Intaglio" and focusing on the runes. At least she was glad that she could cast the carving spell correctly. Or doing all the carving manually would have been too tiring!
Then came, Isa... Jera...Eihwaz.. She remembered that Isa was the simplest of all runes. She looked into her textbook for the meanings. It represented stillness and purity, opposite of Kenaz. Jera was an indication of plenty. And then came Eihwaz.
Then came Perthro. The cup of Perthro represents fertility, mystery, and all things hidden. Its shape was well... different. She quickly carved it too.
And then she counted how many she had done. Whoa! She had carved out 14 runes till now!! No wonder she was so tired!
14 runes done, 10 more to go!

Now that he had done 18 of the runes, August was starting to feel pretty good about his handywork. He had yet to mess up on one and have to redue it using his spare disks and all of them looked like they were supposed to, based on the textbook.
Now he just needed to finish carving the last six runes. He cast the carving spell they had learned again and began to work. "Intaglio." That bird was still overhead, looking down at him curiously. 'Ehwaz...Mannaz...Laguz...Ingwaz...' "Darn it." August's wand slipped a bit and made one of the lines that was supposed to make up the diamond shape of the Ingwaz rune go too far and end at the edge of the wooden disk. He seemed to have thought too soon about not having to use the spares.
Reaching for one he cast again, this time creating a correct representation. 'Dagaz...Othala...'
He was finished carving!

Ira was now close to finishing the second Aett as well! Only two more runes were left of the second Aett!
"Intaglio...Algiz," she cast, slowly moving her wand in the shape of Y with an extra line. The rune started to appear as she worked. And though physically, exertion wasn't much, this carving did need the same amount of effort. Setting the finished rune aside he moved on to the next and cast again.
Now came Sowilo. It was easy to carve too. It was like S, without the curves. She carved the rune the same way as before and kept it aside too after it was finished. The second Aett was done!! Yipee!!
16 runes done, 8 more to go!

He was finished carving all of his runes! And he hadn't even cut his finger while holding the tiny things. The second being the bigger of the achievements in the boy's mind.
Standing up, and dumping all of his finished runes in his pocket, August quickly walked back to where they had come through the portal, in search of Professor Jenkins and the paint they would use to seal and coat their runes. He found the man and the bottle of the red, blood-like paint and took a small phial for his own use.
Once in posession of the stuff, the Gryffindor stepped off to the side and then sat on his knees, laying out each rune on the sun-dried earth. He slowly, dipped his finger into the paint and then rubbed it all over the surface of each rune, whispering it's name and concentrating hard.

Finally the last Aett, the third Aett which contained 8 runes. Once she had carved these 8 out, she would be free to go!
Encouraged by that, Ira sat up a little straighter and started carving, First came Tiwaz. It looked like an arrow. It was pretty easy to carve. She cast the carving spell, "Intaglio" and then muttered the rune name, and concentrated on it. She read from her textbook, and it seemed that it was kind of warrior rune.
Once she was done with Tiwaz, she started the rune, Berkana. It looked quite similar to letter B. She quickly carved it and kept it aside to, in the pool of her finished runes.
Then she looked into her textbook, for the next rune. It was Ehwaz. Uh? Hadn't she already done that in 2nd Aett? She looked up the previous page and then realised that in the 2nd Aett, it was Eihwaz while in 3rd Aett, it was Ehwaz. Oh!
Ehwaz symbolized forward energy and movement. Ira continued carving the rune, in the shape of capital M. Yup, it was easy.
Whew! 19 runes done, 5 more to go!

After he had finished rubbing the paint on each of the 24 runes, August leaned forward and blew air onto each of them to help them dry in the sun. They were turning out so nice.
After about 10 minutes of waiting, they were finished.
The Gryffindor quickly stuffed them into his hand and then walked back to stand by the Professor to see when they were going to leave. As he waited he fondly checked out his finished project.

Alyssa sat up and inspected the runes to make sure that the blood on the runes had dried. Once she was sure they were, she pulled out her mokeskin purse and dropped them into it. Taking out her wand she cleaned the saw, gouging tool and the pen knife she had used, which was now stained with her blood and said,"Scougify" to clean them. She then pointed her wand at her work desk and did the same. Now that everything was clean, she placed the saw and the gouging tool where she had found them and folded her pen knife and stuffed it back into her pocket. Then she sat back, enjoying her time in the sun as she waited for Professor Jenkins to tell them what they needed to do it next.
