Hecate had brought a tray with a few items on them. Flowers, Shellfish, Strawberries, peanuts and other things. Her large cauldron was seated on it's burner, which was not lit, before her.
She was in a good enough mood. Things were going well in her personal life. She just needed to get used to certain things... that would come with time. She opened the classroom, and waited for her students to file in.
ooc: This class will stay open for at least 72 hours (probably more.) Also thanks to Antarctica! for taking the picture of the Potions Classroom for me at the WWoHP, and to Ameh for makin it into a pretty graphic!
"Alright now. Start by filling your cauldrons with water! And don't forget the 5 C's of potion making." She said and walked through the class.
Catching the smirk Professor Lafay gave her, Sierra cast a grin in the woman's direction before turning her attention to the board. She read over the list of ingredients, mentally thinking to herself what each one would provide. She got everything situated just as it should be then flicked her wand out its holster.
The Five C's. Right. Those were pretty much drilled into her mind by this point. Cleanliness was what she needed now, though, so she peered into her cauldron. Although she didn't immediately see anything out of the ordinary, she very well knew that dust and left behind ingredients had a tricky way of hiding out until something went wrong.
She pointed her wand deep into the cauldron. "Scourgify!" she said. She waited a minute for the spell to take effect then pointed her wand into the cauldron one again. "Aguamenti!" she said, and filled the cauldron with water. When the water reached the point it should be, she ended the water charm with a quick "Finite," then waited for the next set of instructions.
Autumn wan't surprised she was wrong, she listened to the answers and made a mental note in he head.
she quickly jotted down the ingrediants that came up
She pulled her cauldron towards her "Aguamenti!" it filled with water and when the water reached the desired level she spoke again "Finite"
She stood and waited for further instructions admiring her work.
"Alright now. Start by filling your cauldrons with water! And don't forget the 5 C's of potion making." She said and walked through the class.
Louisa raised her eyebrows at the correction Lafay had offered. That stuff was poisonous to ingest? Well, very good to know. But... she wasn't implying that they were about to 'ingest' the potion, was she? Potions never tasted good.
However, the fifth year started scribbling down the ingredients of the potion:
Water
10 drops Valerian root
10 drops Salamander Blood
2 dock leaves
1 Ashwinder Egg
4 sprigs Fluxweed
10 drops Murtlap Essence
2 sprigs Parsley
3 spoons Raw honey
5 Basil leaves
1 whole Papaya
1 Ginger Root
17 Reishi (mushroom of immortality)
With her wand, she flicked it, "Scourgify," at the cauldron sitting before her. She peered inside and touched the top of the pot with one finger to make sure the spell worked. Satisfied, she flicked it again and this time, "Aguamenti," the thin stream of water burst out of her wand and into the cauldron. The girl sighed inwardly, feeling slightly humiliated that the Aguamenti charm, of all, remained lame even as she aged and her other spells developed. She made a mental note to check the problem out. "Finite," murmuring just for the fun of it because the water had already stopped. Heh.

Right. The 5 C's. Alex always forgot about those...he'd had to start over on more than one occasion because he'd forgotten to clean his cauldron. NOT TODAY though! Although that was probably because Lafay had reminded them all.
He ran a finger on the inside of his cauldron and was pleased to see that there wasn't a bunch of gross junk still sitting on the inside, but one could never be too sure. "Scourgify!" he said, waving his wand and cleaning the cauldron with ease. Now it was DEFINITELY ready to go!
"Aguamenti," he said, starting to fill his cauldron with water until it reached the level he had desired.

Hmm. So it turned out that stuff people are allergic to were not part of the potion. That had been Ari's guess, so this time the girl was actually pleased at her reluctance to raise her hand and answer the question, because had she done so, she would've been wrong, obviously.
The theoretical part of the class was soon over, and they were starting the potion now. By filling their cauldrons with water, simple as that. So far so good. 'Aguamenti.' Ariadne spoke firmly, pointing her wand to the inside of her cauldron and watching it fill with water, until she gauged it had reached the right level, when she stopped the charm. Like the rest of the class, Ari was now waiting for instructions, still feeling shivers down her spine when Lafay walked by her, though not as much as when she had been a firstie.

Ready for the practical part Hannah wrote down the instructions from the board. She looked at her cauldren and it didn't seem dirty, but it didn't really matter what she thought. She took at her wand and said "Scourgify." There now she had a clean cauldron. Now for some water, with a flock of her wand "Aguamenti." and the cauldron started to fill up with water. When she got the water to the desired level she said "Finite" with a flick of her wand. She looked up towards the professor and waited for further instruction.

Gideon listened as his classmates gave examples of things that might be used in the alergy potion, the 5th year prefering to stay quiet himself and simply pay attention. When Professor Lafay turned them to the practical portion of the class, he picked up his quill once more as he watched her move to the board, copying down the ingrediants as listed.
He absently nodded at the professor's instructions, quite familiar with the begining tasks at hand. Gideon set his cauldron carefully on the burner before switching quill for wand. "Scourgify," he cast to double check the cleansfulness of the inside. "Aquamenti..." he added fulling the cauldron with fresh water until he was satisfied with the level and then cancelled the spell and awaited the next step.
She had wrote down her notes and put her wand over her,"Aguamenti." She when it got to the needed amount,"Finite" She then waited for further insturctions.
Aurora scribbled down the ingredients on her parchment and took out her wand. Then she pointed it in her cauldron and muttered "Scourgify." She did the same for her work area and then filled her cauldron with water.

Lily pulled out her cauldron as the professor had asked. Looking up to the board, Lily looked at the list of ingredients needed before copying them down into her notebook.
Unsure of what the professor meant about the five C's of potion making, Lily raised her hand to ask a question. "Um, Professor.... Can you possibly explain the five C's of potion making to me." Lily didn't know whether the professor would appreciate her not knowing of the things to follow, but this was Lily's first potions class, and she was muggleborn so she knew not of magical techniques or tips to follow.

Nessie took her cauldron and did the five C's of potion making sure that the cauldron was clean. She would NOT be making that mistake again this year. After she cleaned the cauldron using Scourgify and then she preformed Aguamenti to the not-so-empty-anymore cauldron, waiting for her next directions.

"Yes, but which ones?" She asked.
"Which ones." She said rolling her eyes, "I'm asking you all for ingredients, not a type of ingredient."
"We know what it needs to be... we need the ingredient names." She shook her head.
"Yes. Valerian root is used because in combination with the other ingredients, it help render the allergy dormant."
"Salamander Blood, yes, it helps with the healing. The Wiggentree bark would counteract with the Valerian root, and St. John's wort causes more allergic reactions than are necessary." She said shrugging.
SPOILER!!: Bezoar
"But this isn't a poison, and a bezoar is too strong for this potion." She said "What we are making is a potion that will deaden the allergic reactions for a year at a time."
"Yes dock leaves, for precisely that reason. It's a natural antihistamine. But certainly not sneezewort. That causes more allergies." She answered.
"No snakeweed combats venom." She said. "That's more to combat a poison."
"Bananas? No. Bananas have many medicinal properties, but none of them are anti allergies." She said.
"Belladonna is poisonous when ingested... which means it's a type of poison... so... no." She said.
"Yes. Water is the base of the potion." She said and smiled. "Very good."
Hecate blinked. The boy was correct... but it surprised her. He was never the smartest kin in her class. "Uhmm... yes. to all three. Ashwinder Eggs, Fluxweed and murtlap essence are key to this potion."
"Uhmmm, no..." She said with a shrug.
"Yes they would." She said with a nod.
"Uhmmm... I'm not familiar with those." She said and moved to the next student.
"Very good Miss Greingoth," She said with a smirk.
"Raw honey is quite powerful, yes. It's an ingredient." and she nodded. "Very good."
Moving to the board she magically made the ingredients appear on the board:
"Alright now. Start by filling your cauldrons with water! And don't forget the 5 C's of potion making." She said and walked through the class.
Oh, yes! She had gotten an ingredient right! Vlimia practically glowed with pride. Looking up at the board as she wrote, Vlim copied down the ingredients for the potion.
Vlimia took a peek inside her cauldron, and noticed a smudge of something green on one side of it. "Scourgify." She said, making the smudge wash away. That was better. Onto the next step. "Augumenti." Vlim said, pointing her wand at the empty cauldron. As water started to fill the cauldron, Vlimia watched intently, waiting for the best moment to cast Finite. After a few seconds, the cauldron was almost full. "Finite." Vlimia said, and the water level stopped rising. Vlim awaited her next instructions eagerly.
"Alright now. Start by filling your cauldrons with water! And don't forget the 5 C's of potion making." She said and walked through the class.
After quickly scribbling down the listed ingredients as well as the Five C's onto her parchment, Vashti grabbed her wand and cast a quick "Scourgify," on her cauldron. She looked over it and, though it looked clean, she cast a second one just to be sure. "Aguamenti," came next and she let the water flow from her wand until it had filled up the cauldron to the right point. Once that was completed, she wrote the steps down into her notes and waited for further instructions.

Did the professor also want them to start collecting the ingredients? Probably not... right? They still had to set up their cauldrons and go through the five C's... again. Selena cleaned out her cauldron as the professor instructed with a scourgify before using Aguamenti to fill the cauldron with water.

It looked clean, but she could never be too sure that Professor Lafay wouldn't turn the cauldron over. Performing the spell again, she repeated the process twice more until she was satisfied.
Okay. Now for water. "Aguamenti," she smiled, visualizing the cauldron brimming with water. A healthy stream erupted from her wand and just the right amount poured itself into the cauldron.
Not collecting ingredients yet, right? So Elise just listed the ingredients into her book.

Five C's of Potion Making: Color, concentration, care, cleanliness, and content.
Ingredients
When it began to be quite clear that no one - not even a little first year would say the five C's she would just have to pipe up and say them. Who knows? Maybe it would be nice to actually do a good job in Potions this term and not be the potions lackey.
Raising her hand she waited a few seconds before speaking, "Professor the five C's of Potions making are Color, concentration, care, cleanliness, and content." She smiled feeling proud of her obviously correct answer.

Alyssa took out her wand and pointing it inside her cauldron, she said the incantation, "Scourgify" to clean it. She then put down her wand and checked the insides of her cauldron to make sure it was properly cleaned.
Once Alyssa was sure that her cauldron was clean, she checked it for cracks. Her cauldron had to be free from cracks to prevent any possible leakage later. She definitely did not need that to happen in this class. Once she was sure that her cauldron was in perfect condition, Alyssa picked up her wand again and pointing it inside her cauldron, she said the incantation, "Aguamenti" to fill her cauldron with water. Water poured out from her wand and once there was sufficient water in the cauldron, she stopped the water from flowing by saying "Finite" to end the spell before holstering her wand and waited for further instructions.

Then as instructed, Ira took her cauldron and first cleaned it, "Scourgify!" There, her cauldron was as clean it could be. And then filled it up with water. "Aguamenti" Water did not gush out from her wand but came as a slow stream. Fine, Ira was thankful that it at least came on first try. She filled the cauldron as required and then cast the finite spell to stop the flow. Then waited for further instructions.

As they were instructed to begin brewing, however, she shifted into motion. First step, making sure everything was clean. Her cauldron was already in front of her, so she leaned over to examine it closely before taking her wand out of its holster. "Scourgify," she cast, making sure to run her wand deliberately over every inch of the interior of her cauldron, as well as the outside just to be absolutely sure Professor Lafay wouldn't find anything wrong with her cauldron. Vickers smiled to himself, happy that he got one of the ingredients right. And given the list of other ingredients listed he was starting to form in his head how this potion might actually work. He drew out a fresh parchment and his quill and began to list the ingredients down in his notes.
He looked up again wondering what the 5Cs were. Was that some kind of spell? He hesitated for a moment before proceeded to prepare his potions materials anyway, the way he always did it at Salem. He took out his cauldron and scourgified it to clean it, inspecting it for any cracks just to make sure it wouldnt leak. It was then that he cast the aguamenti spell and filled the cauldron with water.

Then looking at the cauldron she pointed her wand "Scourgify" Once Minerva knew the cauldron was clean she pointed again "Aguamenti" the water began to fill in the cauldron. Minerva noticed she had enough water so she pointed "Finite" and placed her wand back into it's proper place.

Messer picked up his quill and wrote down the ingredients in his notebook. After he finished writing the ingredients, then he heard the Potion Mistress said about the 5 C's. He had read about that. The 5 C's were Cleanliness, Care, Color, Concentration, Content. Yup. That was it.
Messer took his wand, pointed at his cauldron "Scourgify!" When he was sure that his cauldron was clean enough, he pointed his wand again at his cauldron "Aguamenti!" the water started to flow from the tip of her wand and slowly fill the cauldron, he cast the Finite charm when the water was at the proper level.

Antillergen Potion
Uses: deaden one's allergic reactions for a year at a time
It's time to get the potions done. That would be the most exciting part throughout the lesson. Good. Taking the quill out, Tiffany jointed all the ingredients and procedures down carefully, just hoping that she didn't miss anything, any details.

Antillergen Potion
Uses: deaden one's allergic reactions for a year at a time
Procedure:
Clean the cauldron
Fill cauldron with water
And then she remembered the 5 Cs as the professor reminded them about that. Cleanliness. That would the most important for her before and after she finished making a potion. She took her wand, pointing at her cauldron,"Scourgify". It was clean enough now. Then she filled it with water, casting the spell,"Aguamenti". That made a good preparation for making the potion. All she had to do now was to wait for the professor for further instructions.

Laura looked around and realised her cauldron was getting full and so she moved her wand onto the floor but forgot to stop the spell for a couple of seconds. "I'm sorry Professor." Laura sighed as the spell stopped, well it was an accident and the floor was just a bit wet but well she didn't know the spell to dry it up or she would have done.

Silvia wrote down the ingredients and then turrned to her cauldron. What were the five C's? she thought. She was just a first year and not particularly interested in potions, but there must have been a mention of it in the first chapter of the textbook if it was so important. She glanced around at the other students and heard a number of them saying scourgify. Ah, a cleaning spell, Silvia thought. Silvia was very familiar with the cleaning spell; she witnessed her mother use it numerous times. Then cleaning must be one of the five Cs. It definitely made sense.
She pointed her wand at the cauldron and said "Scourgify." It was hard to tell if it had made any difference; but then, this was her first ever potion so the cauldron couldn't be that dirty to begin with. Plus she had wiped out all the dust that had been collecting in it last night. Having made sure the cauldron was clean, Silvia said "Aguamenti," and watched as water fell from the tip of her wand and into the cauldron. Once this was done, she waited quietly for further instructions.

Potions Lesson 1
Amelia quickly scribbled down the ingredients that she would need for this potion as she thought about the 5 Cs of potion making:
She was pretty sure that she had them all down, but she sometimes had a bad memory unless she checked her notes. Meh. She'd worry about it when the time came. For now, she just worked on emptying her cauldron out. When that was done, she pointed her wand at it and said, "Scourgify." Now it was nice and clean for when she did her potion.
She changed the position of her wand now, to point into the cauldron, saying, "Aguamenti." When she had enough water in the cauldron, she placed her wand down again and waited for Professor Lafay to give the next instructions.

Heh.

After a few seconds, the cauldron was almost full. "Finite." Vlimia said, and the water level stopped rising. Vlim awaited her next instructions eagerly.

"Good... Now take the valerian root and the salamander blood and add the drops in one at a time for each, alternating like this." She said and demonstrated in her own cauldron. One Valerian, One Salamander, One Valerian, One Salamander, One Valerian, One Salamander, etc...
Oakey looked forward at his Cauldron It certainly didn't seem dirty, it could have some remnants of a previous potion in it but it looked pretty darn clean from the outside. To be safe He quickly cast Scourgify at his Couldron. We'll now it looked super clean, it even sparkled a little. With another quick swish he cast Aguamenti and a flow of water came from the tip of his wand and landed inside of his Couldron.

Right, okay. Oakey took the Valerian root in his left hand and the Salamander Blood in his right and began alternating the drops into his cauldron as Lafay had just demonstrated. by the 6th drop of each of the ingredients Oakey began feeling like a robot in an assembly line mindlessly dropping the ingredients into his concoction.

Ella listened to the Professor and then looked down at her notes to double check how much she would need to put in of each ingredient.
Alright, so ten drops each and alternate between them. That's not so bad...Ella picked up the two ingredients and started putting in drops of each, counting aloud. "One Valerian, One Salamander, Two Valerian, Two Salamander, Three Valerian, Three Salamander, Four Valerian, Four Salamander, Five Valerian, Five Salamander, Six Valerian, Six Salamander, Seven Valerian, Seven Salamander, Eight Valerian, Eight Salamander, Nine Valerian, Nine Salamander, Ten Valerian, Ten Salamander." When she was done, she put down the ingredients and looked into her cauldron, wondering if that was what it was supposed to look like.
Draca write down the ingredients for the potion and then used the cleaning charm to clean all the things she would need for the potion including her cauldron twice. She them filled her cauldron up with water and added 10 drops Valerian root and 10 drops Salamander Blood alternating them one at a time.
Now it was ready for the 10 drops of Valerian root and Salamander Blood. Once she got the ingredients to took the Valerian first and droped one into cauldron counting, "One Valerian," She paused and took the Salamander and said, "One Salamander," once she dropped it into the cauldron. She droped them both one by one counting "Two Valeria, Two Salamander, Three Valerian, Three Salamander, Four Valerian, four Salamander, Five Valerian, Five Salamander, Six Valerian, Six Salamander, Seven Valerian, Seven Salamander, Eight Valerian, Eight Salamander, Nine Valerian, Nine Salamander, Ten Valerian and Ten Salamander." As she was done she took a deep breath and let it out. She peaked into her cauldron to see her work. Looking up and around the room she wondered if she has done this correctly.
Good... Now take the valerian root and the salamander blood and add the drops in one at a time for each, alternating like this.[/B]" She said and demonstrated in her own cauldron. One Valerian, One Salamander, One Valerian, One Salamander, One Valerian, One Salamander, etc...
She added One valerian root and then one salamander blood and kept alternating untill all were in. She waited for further insturctions.

Raven quickly wrote the next instruction to her note, Then she put the salamander blood and valerian root.
a Valerian, a drop of salamander, a valerian, a drop of salamander... Until she had put 10 valerian and 10 drops of blood.

Glenn raised her hand, "We start with the Valerian root first then? One drop from Valerian root THEN the Salamander blood then the Valerian root again?" She asked.
When Glenn looked around she saw everyone else doing that as well so she picked up the ingredients and started, "One Valerian, one Salamander." Glenn muttered, and so on until she had finished her ten drops. She sighed and stopped biting her lip, she looked at the colour inside her cauldron and hoped that she had not miscalculated how any times she had alternately drops the ingredients in her cauldron.

All right, alternating drops of valerian root and salamander blood. She found the correct vials and held the valerian root in one hand and the blood in the other upright over her caldron. Very carefully, she tipped the valerian root until a drop fell into the cauldron. She repeated this action twenty times, alternating between the valerian root and the salamander blood while counting the drops out. "One valerian, one salamander, two valerian, two salamander…"

Alyssa watched as Professor Lafay demonstrated what to do before she wrote it down in her journal.
1. Clean cauldron
2. Add water
3. Add drops of both Valerian Root and Salamander Blood taking turns to drip first one drop of Valerian Root and then one drop of Salamander Blood until done.
Alyssa then put down her quill and took out two vials from her bag. She walked over to the Ingredients supply cupboard and using a dropper pumped up 10 drops of Valerian root into one vial and 10 drops of Salamander Blood into the other. Then she returned to her cauldron and picking up one vial in her left hand and one in her right hand, she first dripped one drop of Valerian Root into her cauldron and then one drop of Salamander Blood. "One Valerian, One Salamander. Two Valerian, Two Salamander. Three Valerian, Three Salamander, Four Valerian, Four Salamander. Five Valerian, Five Salamander. Six Valerian, Six Salamandar. Seven Valerian, Seven Salamander. Eight Valerian, Eight Salamander. Nine Valerian, Nine Salamander. She then sat back and waited for the Professor to give further instructions.

Jory listened carefully to Professor Lafay's instructions before proceeding to follow them. Starting with the Valerian Root, he added one before adding a drop of the Salamander blood. He kept track of the exact numbers as he added them untl both ended at ten.
Finishing up with that set of instructions, the Huffie updated the instructions in his book.
Ira listened and carefully saw as professor demonstrated what they had to do. Then copying it, she began adding the valerian root and salamander blood, one drop at a time as instructed.
She added them alternatively. One pair, two pair, three pair, four pair.......ten pair. She counted the drops and then stopped. That was enough right? Then she updated her journal:
Text Cut: Ira's Potion Journal
Potion Name: Anti allergen potion
What the Potion does: get rid of allergies by, apparently, making your body NOT recognize the thing you're allergic too.
