Herbology Lesson One

It was such a nice day outside, the weather was mild, not quite warm but not cold either. Just the way Seren liked it. Unfortunately the lesson wasn’t being held outdoors, no, it was being held in Greenhouse One, where the air was cooler, and the smell of damp soil filled the air.

As you enter the greenhouse the first thing you notice are the stools arranged to the side of the greenhouse by the door, and directly opposite these are stools of a different variety. That’s right, toadstools! While they may look harmless from a distance it’s not wise to get too close to them just yet, after all you wouldn’t want to be sent to the Hospital Wing before the lesson has even started.

Waiting patiently for the students to arrive, Professor Bentley stood by the door to welcome them as they entered; Though she was careful to position herself near the seating area so that she can keep an eye on any mischief making. Standing slightly to the side of the toadstools, was Professor Bentley’s old blackboard, neat and tidy cursive writing slowly appearing on its surface- as if by magic!

Ah, so with one fang down she just had get the other one. Then she didn't have to touch anymore biting toadstools. This got her a little bit more positive for the task at hand.
Holding the toadstool up again she felt around for the second fang. It was bigger than the other one, which wasn't good when the numbness was wearing off the toadstool. She quickly started to pull the fang out and soon had the two of them sitting in her hand. Ha! Now the silly thing coudn't hurt her! Just as well, the toadstool seemed to be getting back into it's old self.
She put the fangs in the jar by the blackboard and took her seat again. Why did everything in Herbology have to bite you?

Bliiiiiiink!

They had to take out ANOTHER fang? Whaaaaaaat?! Wasn't one enough? Hmph! Maybe it would go better this time...? Who was she kidding! This was HER after all.

Kita's eyes drifted from the blackboard to the biting toadstool. It was now or never right? She reached over and took hold of the cap with one hand whilst her other hand gripped the fang.

One...

Two...

THREE! Taking a deep breath, she tugged as hard as she could. And... FREEDOM!

A huge grin spread across Kita's face as she looked down at the fang in her hand. It had come free! Which meant that she didn't have to touch another fang again! Woohoo!

She picked up the other fang and walked over to where the jar was. She looked down at the fangs in her hand before depositing them both into the jar. It felt kind of nice, knowing that she had done something that had scared her stiff. She walked back to her desk and looked up at the Professor. Now... what to do.

So the toadstool, was numbed, and now it was time to remove the fangs. She placed her hand the the cap of the plant, making sure that her hand was well away from the plant's teeth. Holding the plant in place, she reached for one of its fangs. She tried yanking to fang out, but it slipped out of her hand. Grasping the fang even better, she yanked on it again, and was surprised that it actually came out this time.

One fang down, one to go!

Like the previous movements , Daichi got a firm grip on the stool cap but not as firm when he would squeeze it in half. He gripped the next fang but his grip on the cap hadn't been good enough and soon the toadstool was trashing and snapping at his finger. Daichi let out a yelp of shock when the toadstool bit him in one of his fingers and if he hand't had any gloves on..Merlin knows what could have happened!

Freeing his finger from the toothtoadstool's grasp, he gripped the cap and with a swift movement grabbed the fang too and pulled as hard as he could. He stumbled backwards as he held the fang in his right hand and up in the air. The toadstool was still trying to snap at him.

Grabbing the first fang that he had placed on a table and with the one still in his other hand , he walked over to the Professor's desk and placed them in the jar.

Justin pulled out his wand and with a quick flick of his wrist said , " Viro Torpeo !" as he tapped his toadstool gentlely. Just as he figured the toadstool calmed right down and Justin put on his gloves and firmly grabbed one of the fangs and pulled it straight out.

Her hand moving smoothly across the page of her journal, she soon had five pages worth of neat hand writing of everything having to do with different toadstools. Complete with organized headings and written in a good outline style, Ivory felt it was exactly what she needed for the future meeting she had in mind.

And now for the practical part of the lesson.
Listening carefully to the way the Professor pronounced the given incantation, the Ravenclaw prefect formed her mouth around the words slowly. In her mind one of the key concepts to any good incantation was to place the right emphasis on the proper syllable. "Viiiiro Torpeeeeo, VirO TorpeO, Viro Torpeo." The spell flowing from her lips easily now after a few more repititions, the brunette placed a hand on her holster, feeling the smooth wood slip easily into her hand. Immediately the familiar warmth spread through her, tingling down her arm to her fingers to come to a point at the tip of her wand where the ever present nonflammable characteristic tiny, blue flame appeared. Merlin, it was great to have it hopefully the hearing- Shaking her head, she set her mind to the task at hand. Now was not the time to think on upsetting things, now was the time to think of jabs!!

Jabbing wand movements. Glad for the previous charms class where the finite details of these motions had been taught, the Ravenclaw thought back to her diagrams and practice. The motion at least she could execute perfectly.

And jab, 2,3,4. And jab, 2,3,4.

Her mind focused to concentrate on her full intent to numb the fangs off these toadstools. But first, some gloves.

Last fang!!! Yes, another squishy fang to yank out of this... thing. This thing really is a disgrace to all the magical and muggle mushrooms in the world. IT BIT HER!

Rubbing her hands together, getting ready to yank out another fang, she also thought on what the professor is planning to do with these fangs. Flicking her hair over her shoulder, so it wouldn't distract her during the process of yanking out the last and final fang, she gripped the cap with her hand. She grabbed the last fang, and yanked it out. She smiled, she had the urge to simply squish the fang but she decided that squishing will mean getting detention, and she doesn't want to go down that road.

She placed both fangs into the jar, clapping silently to herself, proud that she succeeded in the task. Grinning, she ~~skipped~~ walked back to her seat, waiting for the lesson to proceed.

Isabelle looks at her numb toadstool and decides the best way to pull its fangs out. She knew she had to grip it firmly. But not to firmly. She carefully placed her hand on the cap of the toadstool. Isabelle gripped it a little bit. Don't be to hard.

"Ok little toadstool. I'm going to pull your fangs out now," Isabelle told the toadstool. She probably sounded stupid talking to a toadstool. But, whatever, it made her feel more comfortable. "Ready...1...2...3," Isabelle pulled downward carefully with her other hand pulling the fang out cleanly.

After placing the first harvested fang on the table in front of him Justin went to grab the second fang. As he did the toadstool jumped up and clamped onto his hand. " Aaagh! Get it off me! " , he screamed as everyone present started staring at him. Just as he had given up hope of retrieving his hand the toadstool losened it's grip and he quickly yanked out the remaining fang and brought them up to Prof. Bentley's desk and placed them in the jar.

Adam looked all around him.People were already pulling out the fangs an putting them into the jars they were told to do.Feeling he would fall way behind he got to work as soon as he realized were his status stood.

Pulling out his wand from his pant pocket he held it in his hand an jabbed the wand in the air,careful not to touch the toadstool.Looking around him some more,his said in a shay voice",Viro..Viro Torpeo."A rush of relief came over him when he felt a small tingle in his hand an then soon after,warmth.His shoulders relaxed an he huffed out heavily.

After making sure that the toadstool was completely numb, Jayden grabbed onto the top of the cap, and mimicked what she had seen Professor Bentely do. "Aha! I have done it!" Jayden mumbled proudly to herself holding the fang in her hands. "Take that Mr.Toadstool."

Feeling slightly better that some people were still completing the second set of instructions Adam did not rush as much before.But,still,he felt as if he weren't up to standard yet-though this was the first class he had attended,so it'd take some time for him to get used to.

"Sorry I have to do this to you..But you'll probably go those fangs back in,won't you?"He asked the toadstool,as he held it to eye level as he spoke in a childish voice.Glancing around to make sure no one had heard him he took hold of the cap an with his other hand tugged at the fangs until they came out with such force he had almost lost his balance.

"Well..That wasn't much fun for you was it?Or for me..But oh well..Not all classes can be that way.."

Lana glanced over her notes. Oh, of course.. Viro Torpeo! At least I was close! Hmm.. wand movement, wand movement. Oh here! Jab! Okay.. so this is supposed to numb the biting toadstool? I sure hope so.

Lana pulled her dragon hide gloves back on and walked towards a free toadstool.

She looked back at one her friends nervously. Here goes nothing.

Wand in hand, she made a jabbing motion towards the toadstool.
"VIRO TORPEO!"

She got closer to the toadstool to see if it had worked. She put her hand close to it and it tried to bite her, but wasn't able to.

Wicked. she thought smiling. This class isn't bad after all.

Now on to the next part.. the fun part. She took a firm hold on the mushrooms cap, but not too firm, and far away enough from the teeth. But the toadstool didn't seem to be in a biting mood, it was groggy from her numbing charm. Not so tough anymore are you.. She stopped realizing she was talking to a mushroom, besides it could even be considered cute now that it wasn't snapping.

Moving on, now it was time to harvest the fangs. Desiree was still a little wary about this, but she had gloves. She took the right fang and tried to get a firm grip on it (without damaging the plant) and pulled. It came out right away and she happily placed the first fang in the jar.

SPOILER!!: Instruction on the Board

Okay, 0 down, 2 to go. Amethyst slipped on her dragon hide gloves and moved to the Toadstool. She firmly, but gently gripped the cap of the toadstool. She was very careful not to get too close to the teeth. She reach under the cap, feeling the fangs and got a really good grip.

"The fangs!" She whispered to herself. "1..." She readied herself. "2..." She gripped as hard as she could. "3!" She yanked straight down on the fangs and heard a slightly pop as she felt a loose fang. She smiled softly as she took a good look at the fang she'd just cleanly as successfully pulled out.

"Now, that wasn't so bad..." She wiped the small amount of sweat from her forehead.

Looking at the toadstool before him Damon was trying to be as careful as possible not to touch the toadstool and make it squirm or anything.. He slowly took out his wand and pointed it squarely at the toadstool, the thing almost looked like it did not even want to be touched but Damon had to do what was needed he slowly flicked his wand and said "Viro Torpeo!" His toadstool suddenly looked like it was relaxed and Damon took that as a good sign. First objective appeared to be a success.

Hands sliding easily into her Dragon Hide gloves, Ivory flexed her fingers admiring the soft feel against her skin and knowing the tough outside would likely be most appreciated if she wasn't able to numb the toadstool appropriately.

Wand in hand once more, the female prefect prepared her station placing everything close and easily reachable before approaching the toadstools.
Grinning at the sight of the energetic, feisty plants, Ivory picked one at random and took aim. "Viro Torpeo" Wand jabbing directly, the brunette watched as the spell hit the toadstool in question. Suddenly, it wasn't bouncing to and fro snapping at anything available. It still looked feisty, however at a much slower pace. Almost as if it was being vicious in wily nilly way. That is until the full effect of the spell sank in. Slow movements became groggy ones. Swaying in place, seeming for all the world like it was too much of an effort to carry around that big cap, the toadstool continued its antics however as if determined to try to be intimidating either way.

Stretching her gloved hand forward to firmly but gently take hold of the cap, Ivory made small hushing noises as it attempted to struggle. "Hey,hey now. None of that now. The less you struggle the easier this'll be. I promise," she assured the plant honestly. "I won't make this harder than it has to be."

An now for the final part.Adam eyed the last fang he had yanked out,then he looked at his second one he had been instructed to do the same.

"Nasty little bugger aren't you?Good thing you're numb.."He spoke to it once again.But this time,when he yanked the fang out it began to squirm an wiggle an "OUCH!"He winced.The pain wasn't great but it did have a little sting to it.Once grabbing it off from the table it had fallen to,Adam cupped it in his hands an in a rush,toss the fang into the jar,or more like it wiggled itself into it.

Lucy couldn't believe that they were just about to kill the poor mushrooms. They looked so cute with the red cap and the white stem. Anyways, this was a class and professor had given them some task so they had to do it. She looked at the poor mushrooms and wore her gloves and went closer to one of them. hmm..Sorry, but i have to do this.

She took her wand in her hand and said very clearly and in a calmly manner "Viro Torpeo" jabbing her wand at the mushroom. Hmm.. Good job it's getting numb . Strangely it didn't as long she thought it would take doing it. It was done perfectly at once.

Damon looked at his Toadstool as he prepared for the fang extraction.. He was thinking that this would be a bit more tough to do than the first part. Damon carefully held the Toadstools cap and it wriggled under his grasp a bit. very slowly with another hand he grasped one of the Fangs and pulled one Fang out without much of a sound, it seemed his toadstool was not noticing him.. He dropped his first Fang into the jar in front of him.. That was easy but he wondered if the 2nd fang would be different.

The first one had been easy enough, so Desiree confidently grabbed the last fang, got a good grip, and pulled.. It wouldn't budge. It seemed the toadstool was going to put up a fight. Alright come on she wiggled it a little bit, gave it a few more tugs. And finally the fang popped out. See now was that so difficult she thought. She put the last fang into the jar, finishing their first assignment. She was looking forward to Herbology this year, it was going to be exciting, it's not very often you get to harvest toadstool's fangs.

She smiled again, taking a good look at the fang she'd, once again, successfully pulled out.

Amethyst walked over to the jar smiling to the Professor. It was then that it registered in her head that she hadn't greeted the Professor. After placing the fangs into the jar she walked to the Professor. "Oh, Professor...please for give my rudeness! I was just so fascinated by the plants, I hadn't even thought of my manners.." She blushed lightly. "I'm sorry..Hoping you are enjoying this first lesson just as I am, Good Morning!"

Olivia was pretty nervous about the next part of the task. Pulling out the fangs of a Biting Toadstool. Perhaps if she thought about it and compared it to a Muggle gardening task? How about pulling off the thorns from a rosebush? Not that she'd ever done that, but it made it feel more familiar and therefore less scary.

With a deep breath, she got a firm grip on the cap and grabbed one of the fangs. She yanked out the fang in one quick motion, thrilled that she'd managed it first time and feeling more confident for the next part of the task.

After getting her first toadstool numbed it was now time to yank it. She took her hand forward towards the number fang and took a firm grip on the toadstools cap. She made sure that she wasn’t too close to its teeth nor she holds it too tightly or else she’ll have the risk of it biting and damaging the plant.

As the part of holding the fang was done she counted one two three and yanked it in a downward direction. There the fang was out very cleanly.
