The Milky Way Galaxy contains anywhere between 200 and 400 billion stars. A tiny fraction of those can be viewed right here, in the Hogwarts Observatory. This circular room was locked for a long time, but Professor Antares opened it again when he became a staff member at Hogwarts and now after his leave Professor Roslund maintains it - complete with a huge telescope that was a new addition then. As it is difficult to operate, students need permission from the professor before they are allowed to use it, but a number of smaller telescopes that anyone and everyone is free to use are stowed away in cupboards lining the rounded walls along with empty potion vials and other astronomy items and supplies.
Large star charts are pinned up on the walls as well. Not all of these belong to the school. Those that do not have a great number of notes and calculations added to them - although Professor Roslund is a teacher now, he is still able to supply colleagues and his mentor with data and measurements. You are, of course, free to study his charts, but make very sure not to remove or misplace anything.
Stargazing, naturally, is an activity best pursued at night, and as such, the Observatory usually remains unlocked. Of course, there are superseding school rules that limit the hour at which students can still be out of bed. If you desire to study the wonders of the cosmos later than that, you need a note from Professor Roslund. Should a student be found without such a note (or, alternatively a creative excuse), he or she can expect... trouble.
In the same way that a library is more than just a building where books are stored, the Observatory is as much a place of scientific inquiry as it is a shrine to the grandeur and beauty of the Universe. Professor Roslund, when he doesn't use the telescope for work, often comes here to think, or for some peace and quiet. Please respect him and any other teacher or student spending his or her time here in this way by not running around or shouting.

Minerva walked slowly up to the observatory. This is where she felt the safest, but then she sighed. No where felt safe right now. She always felt as if someone was watching her. She was glad to see now one was around. She just wanted to be alone, alone with her thoughts and her stress. She sat down and looked up at the sky.
Violet had finished her term-long Charms journal and was feeling pretty pleased with herself. She decided, as long as she was in the library, to walk a few floors more back up to the seventh floor and practise focusing telescopes in the observatory for a while. Although she was doing well enough in Astronomy, she felt that maybe she hadn't devoted quite as much time as she ought to have in the practical department. It was such a long walk from the dungeons to the observatory, after all.
She walked into the room and stopped dead in her tracks. The place was a mess! Papers and debris and equipment all over the place, and some of the telescopes looked out of place. What had happened? It looked like someone, or something, had gone berserk in there. And...were they still around here someplace? Violet quickly dew out her wand and cautiously entered the room.

But the collection was getting heavy, even though it had stopped half way up to the Astronomy tower and placed the quill, ink and chalk into the shiny metal box. So with two thing tucked under it's arms, it huffed it's way up the many stairs to the observatory.
Face lighting up at the sight of the large telescope, it dropped the things it was carrying onto the floor and skipped over to it. But it was too high, and the thing couldn't reach the eyepiece to see out.
Stamping a foot on the floor, it turned around to face the cupboards, grumbling. Grinning cheekily, it ran over to the cupboards and tugged on the handles to open them. Inside were several smaller telescopes, vials and various stuff. Flailing it's arms around, it pulled one of everything out and spread it across the floor. A couple of the vials broke, sending glass scattering everywhere.
Gingerly touching a piece with it's already burnt finger, it felt that it was sharp and pulled away again. Flicking a few pieces away, it concentrated on the telescope, holding it up to it's eye, but the cover was on and it still couldn't see anything. Grunting, it began bashing it against the floor, denting it in a few places. Looking down at the mangled metal, it noticed that it's hands had some of the ink on them, and in turn so did the telescope.
Chuckling, it scrambled over to the shiny box and pulled out what was left of it's stolen ink. Yanking all the other telescopes out of the cupboard, it dipped a finger in the ink and and smeared it around the eye pieces of them, giggling. With it's hand now covered, it reached up and pulled itself on top of the cupboard. Jumping up and down it looked at all the pretty star charts. Smacking it's hands across a few of them, it ripped one down and threw it on the floor. But the last caught it's eye more. Pulling it down a little more carefully, the thing jumped down and ran back to it's collection.
Rolling it up, it tucked it under it's arm, then picked up the teddy and metal box. Leaving the mess of paper, glass and ink scattered across the whole floor, it leaped back down the steps one by one.
Observatories were fun!
Kennedy made his way to the Observatory as he rubbed off the ink on his face with the napkin Professor Roslund hand lent him. His theory had been right. The culprit behind all this had pranked him. PFFFFT! Just wait until he and Professor Roslund got a hold of it.
He had his wand in his other hand, trying to look as brave as the Professor. When he stepped inside Kennedy grimaced at the mess. The telescopes... poor, poor telescopes. He picked up the one that was dent, but this time did not try to see if it was broken. He had learned his lesson. "Can it be fixed?" he asked, looking up at Roslund, but stepped aside so he could examine the room.

Violet turned around when she saw the Astronomy Professor and another student enter the Observatory. Good, back-up, in case there was trouble. Violet nodded approvingly when she saw that Kennedy had his wand out already. She hoped the Professor didn't think she had done it, but since Kennedy seemed to have already told him about it, she guessed she had not been the first one to find it. Thankfully Professor Roslund was here; if anyone could sort this mess out, it would be him.

Harvey smiled weakly "Oh! ok. well that is good to know. I was just wondering what the other regret you had was. If you feel you can tell me, then you can but only if you want to. As I dont want anyone to feel any regrets about this year." he said smiling weakly. "Yes that is all we can do now, just hang out. I am thinking of coming to all your competitions, but that is if I will be given permission to travel all over Europe." he said smiling. He really wanted to accompany her now that no-one was going with her, but question was would his mom allow it and what about all the people coming to visit him, what to tell Ronnie.

Tori had always wanted to be cool and into Astronomy and all that, but the plain truth was that she just sucked at the subject. She just didn't know enough about stars and the skies and the planets to be the next Kurumi Astronautberry, so instead she just brought Harry up to the observatory to look around.
Ignoring the messy, messy observatory, and the two like, cuddly first years nearby, Tori took Harry out of her bag and showed him around the observatory. It was a nice, cool night, and the stars were visible even without a telescope.
Harry seemed to like seeing the stars, though he was a little bit cold. Tori could tell because she had gotten to know him pretty well and also because well, he was shivering in her hand. "Argentum Calidus!" Tori cast, warming up her egg nicely. "Better?" she asked him with a giggle, holding him up to her cheek for a nuzzle.
After just stargazing for a bit, Tori decided to try to get one of the telescopes out from amongst all the junk strewn all around. She decided against it, however, when she saw the ink on the eyepieces, and so it was just back to the common room for her and Harry. At least he got to see the observatory!

Minerva couldn't help but smile. "Oh Harvs that would be nice but you don't have to. Ronnie wouldn't like that plus she have so much company this year. I will be fine don't worry about me."
