Default Muggle Studies Lesson #1-Muggle Games

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

As you enter the Muggle Studies classroom, you are instantly reminded, or introduced, to the fact that Professor Cerulean always tries to transform her class to match the lesson of the day.

The room is covered in large multicolored Muggle bean bags scattered all over the floor. These bean bags have been charmed with extra cushioning charm to make them even more comfortable. Beside each bean bag is a little lap desk for you to place in your lap and use for notes during the class. The floor feels extra cushiony as well although it seems to be the normal tile floor of all of the classrooms.

The walls and ceiling are draped with different bright colors of drapes. It's a little overwhelming but enchanting at the same time.

In the corner, there is a table of refreshments (something the Professor always tries to have at her lessons.). But this time the table is full of Muggle treats. There is a bowl of ice filled with various Muggle sodas from Cokes to Cherry Cokes to Dr. Peppers to Sprite, etc. Beside that bowl is another iced bowl full of bottles of various colored and flavored drinks labeled Gatorade. There are two other bowls on the table: one is full of mini Muggle chocolate candies from Snickers to Twix to Milky Way bars to M&Ms, etc.; the other is full of more chewy flavors of Muggle candy such as Skittles, Dots, Jelly Beans, Twizzlers, etc. There are small bags at the end of the table for you to fill up with these goodies if you would like. Each of the four bowls is enchanted to automatically refill itself when it starts becoming low.

Various forms of Muggle music can be heard playing softly in the background. Anything from rock to pop to calm rap to R&B to Country can be heard in the mix.

There is a small raised platform at the front of the Muggle Studies classroom where a strange white board that looks like a chalkboard stands. It is known as a dry erase board and is a very Muggle inventions. Written on it in various colors of markers is a message from the Professor.

Quote:
Welcome to our first Muggle Studies Lesson!!!

Please come in and have a seat on one of the Bean Bags! Also don't forget to grab a few Muggle treats from the table of goodies!

Gemma focused quickly back in on the rest of the class and was so excited about the student's answers. She was truly overwhelmed by the responses.

"Yes yes yes!!!" she said excitedly. "You are all correct in your responses!"

She flicked her wand and the stack of games began to sort out into seperate stacks, "In the Muggle World, and in some extent in the Wizarding Community, the different games are divided into a variety of categories. So let's try to divide up the different games you mentioned into the different categories so we can better understand them. "

"There are three major categories that games can be divided into. These are Sports, Board Games, and Role-Playing Games." She said with a little nod up and down with approval as she spoke as if she was agreeing with herself.

"Anyone want to take a guess at what each category is focusing on or what games fall under each category?" she asked the class quickly.

OOC: Here we go...Remember NO CHATTING!!! Gemme is still here paying attention. Make sure that you only GIVE ONE ANSWER so that others have a chance to answer. I'm just going to give you a few hours for this question and then I'll be back to break these categories up even more! See you then!
Hmm...

Role Playing games? Sports? Board Games?

Raising her hand, Marilyn gave the best answer she could come up with, "Board Games are games played with a board, games pieces, sometimes dice and cards...but a board is always involved because you move the little pieces around it..."

Rambling, Force.

Raising her hand, Thea smiled. 'Sports include team games or activities such as netball, hockey and..' Pausing, she tried to think of a third. 'football!' After giving her answer, she quickly scribbled down the three categories.

She giggled slightly at the professors excitment. Picking up her little bag, Thea popped a few more M&Ms into her mouth and chewed them carefully. Leaning over, she picked up her can. Taking a sip, Thea leant back in her bean bag to wait for the next question.

Oooh, he was right, that was a relief, Muggle Studies always made him feel so lost. The muggle world always seemed to different than the wizard world, but it was just a lot simpler, or so he thought. Still, they had the same, or similar, types of entertainment, so that said something about how close they actually were. Eino raised his hand. "I suppose sport games are games that require physical movement and activity. It can be used to entertain but it's also a way to maintain and improve physical fitness." How Ravenclaw-ish. "The example I mentioned, british bulldogs, would probably fall under this category, although there is also a bit of role-playing involved, so I can't be quite sure, but soccer is a perfect example of a sport."

Selina looked curiously at the screaming girl. What was her problem? Eh, she wasn't going to worry about it. Getting involved never worked out well for Selina. It was always best if she stayed out of things. Yeah, staying out of things was good.

Then the Professor posed the next question and her hand shot up in the air, "Ma'am, sports are athletic games. You know, there requires a high level of activity and is usually scored and competitive. Like Quidditch is a sport." It always came back to Quidditch. Everything else was sort of irrelevant when Quidditch was thrown into the mix.

Louisa removed her hands from her ears after the girl stopped yelling and was grateful that the professor had said something about it - without deducting points since that was the fashion around here this term.

As for the question, Louisa raised her hand, "Monopoly's one of the board games. They have cards, a dice and figures to move." Those were the points that defined board games for her.

Nora couldn't help but stare at the one that yelled in class, but then quickly focused back on professor Cerulean. She had something in mind, so she raised her hand to try. "There is a dice involved in a lot of board games. Or... more?"

Funny little thing, that dice.

"Well my older sister likes to play this game Dungeons and Dragons and that is a roleplaying game in which you assume the role of a character and play as him or her…although I guess it could be seen as a board game as well since it's played on a bored with dice and stuff." Violet said raising her hand growing annoyed with all the inappropriate yelling going on. Really she'd watched her cousin drink an entire bottle of soda and he wasn't this hyper…these kids were just looking for an excuse to be unruly.

Ashley looked over his notes, not entirely sure what category everything was in. Some things seemed obvious, but he was just going to go with the first thing that came to mind on this one. Raising his hand, he guessed "Chess is a board game? Because it has a board... and pieces.." Which it did. As far as his notes were saying, anyway.

Maddy divided up the games she new about from the muggle world, she wanted to include magic game to. But this was not that type of class. If Maddy were to get good msrks in any subject here, it would be this one.

Quote:
Sports Soccar, Basketball, Vollyball, tennis, running, cheerleading Board Games Jeprody, Sorry, Clue, snakes and ladders, twister Role Playing cherades, theatre sports

There were other things two, like card games and games like tag, which diddn't fit into the categories so Maddy diddn't inculde them.

Chartreuse raised her hand. "Sports mainly focuses on motor skills i.e, hand-eye coordination. Most of the activities that fall under this category involves running, throwing, and catching.

Kurumi thought for a moment. Since her classmates seemed to be talking mostly about board games and sports, Kurumi opted to talk more about role playing which only a few of her classmates had touched base on. "Role-playing games are games where players take on a fictional role in a fictional setting," she said as she remembered the games her brother Takashi used to play. He had always been the nerd of the family and had apparently started a Fantasy Fighting Club at his school. Tried to at Hogwarts apparently, but no one really liked the idea of pretending to be witches and wizards when they really were. "There are several versions of role-playing games. Tabletop versions, like Dungeons and Dragons that was already mentioned. Some other examples are The Burning Wheel and The Shadow of Yesterday, but they aren't as well known." She paused and tried not to giggle at the memory of her brother running around the house in a cap with elf ears glued on in wonky directions. "Some people even choose to perform role-playing games in real life, as a sort of improvisational theater."

Sports. That one was easy. Even the magical world had sports. Sierra raised her hand. "Sports are games like Quidditch and that Muggle game of soccer I told you about," she said. "They're athletic games." The best kind. "Board games are, ...oh! Like wizarding chess--only, their pieces don't move and go to war like ours do." Hmm. Muggle games and magical games had a little more in common that she thought they did.

Pity. She hated the Muggle world. Not Muggles. The Muggle world.

"...and I have no idea what a role-playing game is," she continued. "I guess it's just when you...play a role?"

Maybelle shrunk in her seat. "Sorry, Professor." She said. No one understood her. She was a PUREBLOOD. No Muggle in her. "Aren't there games Muggles play on the TV? Some people are entranced by them, and spend hours playing them." She said, for sure knowing of that. Maybelle wanted to be away from these people. But, she was going to show them.

Raising his hand timidly Adam answered,"W-W-well I'm pretty sure sports, like water polo, baseball, football, soccer are all trying to get the players to exercise an get up an working. While other more calm sports, such as yoga an dance..I don't know if dance is a sport, but I'm putting it out there, try to keep the mind at peace while cleansing the soul of any stress the person has, they are also much less dangerous than most on contact sports where injuries are almost certain."Yoga.He had never done it,but from he knew it was a rather calming experience an it did de-stress the body, maybe he needed that this term.Making a mental note to find someone at the castle who does yoga Adam then listened to other students answers.

The fourteen year old raised his hand with an answer in mind already. "Candy Land is classified as a board game because...well it has a board."Yes, and it was one of his favorite games when he was a child. He did have a question, though. There were many games that didn't involve a board, that weren't sports or were Role Playing Games. What category did those fall in. "Professor Cerulean, what about UNO or any card game? In what category would they fall in?" Maybe board games?

"Well, I think a board game is something that you can play inside, with little pieces and sometimes on a board. One of my most favorite board games is 'Ticket to Ride', and you have to connect your trains with the board. A Sport is something you can do outside, and it includes athletic ability, things like dance, football, baseball, rugby, and my personalle favorite, Cricket. Role-playing games are games that you decide to be something or someone your not. I remember once seeing muggles playing a game called house, and it's where the children decide who gets to play what role in their house like Mother, father, brother, sister, dog, ect....
Those are just my examples of board games, sports, and role-playing games." Kaiya said confidently, surely she must have gotten this answer correct, she explained them in such great detail. Kaiya waited to see what the proffesor said.

Presley tentatively raised her hand. She didn't want to contradict the professor, merely bring attention to an error. "There are improv games, professor. And sometimes they're not really Role-Play games." Like hot spot. Nobody was being anybody but themselves in hot-spot. Nobody was acting in the game murder mystery either.... But it was true, now that Presley thought about it. Most non-theatrical games feel under those three categories.

Sage wrote down the three catagories on the piece of parchment and added a few games she thought would go into each catagory, mumbling them out loud as she wrote...

Sports: Cricket, Rugby, and Futball

Board Games: Monopoly, Clue, and Life

Roleplay: Warcraft (Online Game)

Sage nodded, happy with her answers, and waited for what was next...

And do not interrupt my class with your yelling...that is just plain rude and uncalled for." she paused still with her blank look on her face, "If there is an issue with others bothering you yelling is not the solution...simply bring it to my attention and I will deal with it in my own way...because yelling does not solve anything." she said with a final nod.

Jez couldn't help agreeing with that Maybelle girl. It did kind of feel like the Muggle-borns got a head start in this class because of their heritage. But then again, she'd been helping her older siblings brew potions all her life, so she'd probably excel in that class.
Jez raised her hand to answer the question. "A sport is an activity that requires a certain amount of physical exertion and skill, in which an individual or team competes against another for entertainment. An example of this is tennis, where an individual or team of two must use a bat to hit a ball from one side of a net to the other."
'Without the use of broomsticks,' Jez added to herself. 'Pointless, that.'
"A board game is any game played on a board," she continued, "especially one that involves the movement of pieces on the board. An example is chess, although Muggle chess pieces don't move." Which made the game rather dull. What's the point in winning if the pieces didn't destroy the other player's?
"A role-play game is like playing pretend. Players act out being different people, like theatre, although they just do it for fun. Young children often play it because it stimulates their minds, and helps them explore and understand the world around them." She'd played that as a little kid, and it had been pretty fun. One of the things wizards and Muggles had in common, she supposed. Their children's minds.

Kourt slowly raised her hand. "Sport games are those that involve some kind of physical activity. It is beneficial since it can improve physical fitness." She paused, having just decided to give that answer as others had mentioned board and role-playing games. "Also, all three...sports, board games, and role-playing games have their own set of rules and each provide entertainment to the participants and to spectators."
