Default Library Reading Lounge

As you enter the Hogwarts library, what appears to be a cozy nook in one corner of the main area appears most appealing to the Hogwarts student interested in his or her reading. Upon further inspection, you see that this comfy area is larger than it had seemed on first sight. Spread throughout the room are clusters of armchairs, surrounding magical reading lamps giving off different levels of light, all of which are appropriate for reading. These clusters are perfect for study groups or group projects.

Here and there are a few lone armchairs for the student who enjoys quiet solitary reading, and a number of sofas for any that would rather stretch out and put their feet up. Be sure not to muddy them up though!

A soft glow of light is present throughout the room, with more magical lamps in each possible reading space. Be sure not to make much noise and respect some students' wishes to read in quiet.

One last note, no food or drink in the reading lounge.

Happy reading!

The Hufflepuff watched as Gwen took his advice and started working on a list. ''The Wit-Sharpening potion? Wow! Not that I don't think you wouldn't make it right, but did you get it right?'' Jory asked.

Placing his book on the desk, Jory said "Interesting! Knowing about the creatures can come in handy in class.'' He watched as the list of potions got long.

Jory realised he didn't even know where Gwen lived. He asked her this. ''My holidays were great. We took a trip to Hawaii. Are you trying out for the Ravenclaw Quidditch team?''

He looked down at Gwen's extremely long list. "This is going to be harder than I thought,'' he said to himself. He read through the list two times and finally said, ''Essence of Dittany. I think its a useful potion to have around.''
Listening to Jory talk, Gwendolyn was almost sure he actually was mocking her. Even if he admitted he didn’t, the girl wasn’t about to give up her idea! ‘Huh?’, she said surprised. ‘Um… thank you?’, the young Ravenclaw said, a bit unsure. Whaaaat? Hufflepuffs are actually that NICE? Wow… Just as she was about to ask her friend to join her and brew some potion in the lab, Gwen heard Jory say he wouldn’t like to do that. Or so she thought…

‘Of course I DID!’, the second year replied curtly. What kind of question was that? The answer was obvious! Duh… While flipping the last pages of the book, Gwen pretended to be listening to what the huffie said. ‘A-ham’, she mumbled. Right… I am done!, she thought and placed the quill down.

‘Where do I live? Ashington’, she replied curtly. ‘You?’ Still thinking how Jory came to that question, Gwen stared at the piece of parchment. Quidditch team?!!? ‘Me? No..nono….nononono….no’, she said, trying to seem nonchalant, but probably she didn’t manage to do so.

‘Um… and you just picked one?’ Without checking out the difficulty of finding the ingredients, difficulty of making the potion. Just like that? Random picking? Are you kidding me? There’s no way I’ll do that! ‘Um… I really don’t care how useful it is. I can’t keep it anyway…’ Now I’ll do it my way. First: eliminate anything that has to do with love! And then... the uninteresting stuff. And also... maybe eliminate the ones I already did.

He plucked two big books off the pile in her arms and she shifted the rest around as her sock slid half-way down her calf again. She ignored it. “What are you doing in here?” she asked as she made her way over to an empty sofa. She was about to drop the books on the sofa, but stopped halfway remembering the scolding some other poor soul had gotten upon the librarian seeing them mistreat the books. She turned, pulled her satchel off over her head and dropped it on the floor before plopping down on the sofa next to the books. Her hand sought out her exposed calf and she started scratching around the itchy red and gold socks. As she looked at Damien, a look of ecstasy filled her eyes as if she had wanted to scratch her legs all day and couldn’t.
Damien jumped slightly as well at Daisy's obviously startled response to his presence. Attempting to raise his hands in surrender with two of her books, plus his, plus his bookbag over his shoulder, the Hufflepuff pleaded his case. "Usually I'm not the sneaking type," he said. "But apparently I'm quite good at it -- I think the whole fourth floor heard you --"

It was a shot in the dark, but he got the feeling he wasn't all that welcomed by her. Raising an eyebrow, watching her struggle with the pile she carried he merely shrugged his shoulders. "It's a library," he stated. "Guess I was crazy to think there might be books lying around somehwere on these shelves --" His tone was rather cold and unattached. Truth be told, he was actually looking for her, Daisy. The conversation they'd had that day in Diagon Alley was one of the most intellectual he'd ever had. The only other person who conversed with him in such a manner was his Aunt.

He removed his own bag from his shoulder and set it down on the floor next to where Daisy had sat with her book load. Apparently the socks were some form of intrusion on her skin in the form of beeing to itchy. Damien raised both eyebrows, this time in amusement as she seemed quite relieved to take care of the itch that was caused by said stockings.

"If it's so uncomfortable, why do you have them on?" he asked simply.

Her robe had slipped off her shoulder and her tie was a bit askew. "Hmm...well, it is our uniform...oh wait -" she stopped scratching her legs and tugged the sock back up into it's proper position. "You're talking about the socks." She stuck her leg out and turned it this way and that, showing it off, blue sneakers looking brighter then normal in the light. "They're the only kind mum packed...the good pair are in the laundry. Seems the elves aren't too fond of washing my socks lately." Or ironing. Her last back of clean laundry had looked like a hippogriff had tread upon it, what with all the wrinkles.

"You look decent though," she stated waving a hand at his appearance. "Yellow suits you." She said it mater-of-factly; no irony or flirtiness laced it. "Did you find the book you were looking for, or are you out to re-read last year's book?"

"Yes well --" he stammered before clearing his throat. "I guess I have the Sorting Hat to thank for the insect-looking unifrom, don't I?" He looked down at his own tie and snatched the knot to loosen it up a little around the collar. It was then that he noticed her own house colors. The blue footwear made him chuckle a little. "Makes sense you'd at least sport some form of Ravenclaw house," he sad nodding to her feet. "When I met you in Diagon Alley, I could have sworn that's the house were in -- never pegged you for a Gryffindor."

"No offense, of course," he added quickly as an afterthought.

Damien ran his hand through his hair before rubbing the back of his neck. "I wouldn't mind trying to dive deeper in an attempt to find something different from last term's reading choice," he said. "Truth be told I figured I'd have a chance at running into you if I were here."

Now -- Damien was seeing Isobel. And he was happy being with her. Daisy offered something different for him, though. The chance at a conversation in which the other party involved (Daisy) might not think him (Damien) a complete and total nutter. Then again -- up until last term, he never even spoke to anyone.

"Truth is, Sorting Hat took it's time figuring me out. Thought about putting me in Slytherin for a few minutes, but then swiftly ruled it out and hashed out Gryffindor and Ravenclaw."

Daisy didn't even take his comment the way that other girls might have. She had spent too many years around her brothers to take what any one guy said at face value. Most of the time, they didn't say what they really meant or word it the way that it was intended.

"Need some help locating something then?" she inquired reading between the lines. "I've still not located my book and Hogwart's vast tombs don't hold the information I seek."

She noticed the book clutched in his hand. "I take it, that didn't help much?

"Not really, no," he admitted regarding the comment about the book he'd found in Diagon Alley. "There's a reason why it was published so thin," he added as an afterthought before turning the book around in his hand.

He tilted his head curiously at Daisy's declaration of not being able to find a specific book, even though she had quite the pile of literature stacked next to her. "You certainly have me fooled," he said with a light chuckle. And he still wasn't quite sure what to look for regarding what would help him. So he insted diverted the attention back to her. "What exactly have you found that -- doesn't seem to be what you're looking for --?"

Daisy had figured the book wouldn't have been much help, but it ha been something at least. "Well, give me a weekend or two and I might be able to point you in a different direction..."

She picked up one of the many books on the couch next to her. "These? Bah," she shrugged and moved them so Damien could join her if he wanted. "History texts for a parchment I have to write for classes." Most people hated history class, Daisy was the oddball that didn't mind them. "Oh and muggle studies." She pointed to the olive green book Damien had grabbed from her stack. "I learned a helpful new copying spell. No longer need to take them all back to the tower."

She reached down and pulled her wand out of the sock that hadn't been falling down, probably because the wand was holding it up. "Vlad's information seems to be locked away in the Ministry's Department of Mysteries..." she trailed off for a moment becoming quite as she stared into space. "Wonder why that is...."

She would have felt bad if she'd told him about the lesson and he hadn't had anything to have to be able to remember what he'd missed by having to leave suddenly. Just because he wasn't a fellow Ravenclaw didn't mean she had it in her to sabotage him. Of course, she couldn't really tell if it was just him, or if she wouldn't be able to sabotage anyone from another house. That was part of her thoughts she was trying not to focus on, especially since she'd always tried to just be a generally all-around good person. It wasn't her fault if not that many people knew that yet, since studying took up a lot of her time. "I'm not either," she replied as he'd spoken, though. Thankful for another distraction, as stressing about everything wasn't very calming.

And then there was the brewing debate. She knew it was coming, just as much as she didn't really blame him fro making the instigating comment. And she had to avoid moving straight into an explanation of why exactly she'd needed to be in the library as much. Transferring in her OWL year was a bit more work than any other time, but she hadn't been able to avoid it. She'd taken the opening provided for her, and she laughed softly at his response. "Bien essayé," she responded, knowing the change in language was likely to at least throw him off for a moment. "Although, to be accurate, I would expect a true Slytherin to do whatever they very well liked as long as they felt it was to their benefit." Which, in one sense, was exactly what he was doing, taking her up on her offer to help him catch up with his studies. Although she also knew he just enjoyed their random conversations.
After he finished writing down what she had been saying about the class, Matt's eyes immediately went back to the picture; he wanted to finish it now since it was apparent they were done talking about classes and really anything productive for that matter. Besides the picture wasn't going finish itself and it was going to bother him that it was just sitting there, so he grabbed the other piece of parchment again and went right back to adding in the intricate details of each feather on the phoenix; trying to ignore the fact that he still hadn't said anything for the past five minutes. "Well I don't see the point for random comments during class; I mean.. we're there to learn a specific subject and not just socialize." Even though many people hadn't exactly understood that, that explained the whole points issue at the beginning of the term which he didn't even want to remember for rather obvious reasons.

When Stella had spoke French, it definitely made him stop and kind of frown; he knew that she was trying to throw him off and it might have worked merely for a second but it wasn't enough to make him give up this debate since it was far from over. "Not to poke a hole in your theory but you could say that about any of the houses, whether it be a Gryffindor using their bravery to defend others or a Slytherin using their ambition to get ahead. We all have certain traits to live up to here and sometimes it's not always simple." That might not have originally been what he wanted to say but since he started off on a random tangent, he was quite determined to finish his point even if it didn't necessarily make a lot of sense. You know that this is almost finished if you don't start making good points? I know you're distracted but honestly.. focus on this debate.

Having kind of lost her train of thought when it came to History of Magic when they'd started going off on their little tangent/debate, Stella didn't have any trouble whatsoever when Matt had gone back to detailing his sketch. In fact, she just went back to trying to watch him, still rather impressed by his ability. Being an artist just seemed to fit with what she'd already decided about him, just as much as she could acknowledge that drawing was not an artistic talent she had herself. She could act, dance, and even sing a bit, but visual arts kind of escaped her. Then he spoke again, and she nodded. "I agree. A bit of socialization is fine, but having conversations and not paying attention to the lesson is rude," she replied. Of course, so was just making inane comments to the professors, especially since it seemed most of the professors here weren't really open to that sort of thing.

She didn't miss the fact that her simple use of French, even for only one or two words, had interrupted his stride in the arguments, and that amused her a little. Advantages were always useful in debates, but even so , she'd stick with mostly English for his sake. No matter how entertaining the thought of confusing him entirely was. She couldn't help but insert a little bit into the discussion again anyhow. "C'est très vrai," she responded with a grin, "There is always a place for divergence, though. Not everyone has to have every single trait attributed to a House, correct? Therefore, it's both complcated and also something that a person shouldn't try to live up to. Everyone's different, after all." He seemed to have gotten away from himself some, at least when it came to their topic. That only made it more likely she'd win, which was always better than the alternative.

Wait.. weren't they supposed to be studying? That thought had only seemed to come up now as he had finished off the picture which evidently was more important than anything else at the moment. Matt finally set down his quill and pushed the parchment towards the center of the table, the phoenix had always been a challenge for him to try to draw but at least this time it turned out somewhat better than he had expected when he first started on it. "Not only rude, but it's easy to get distracted from what you're actually supposed to be doing when you're talking to someone about something that clearly could wait until after class." For some reason, a bit of attitude started appearing in his tone of voice and he wasn't exactly sure where that was coming from; it possibly could have been the fact that this whole idea reminded him of what Raven had mentioned a couple years ago when he was first sorted into Slytherin.

Even though her point was not only correct and quite brilliant, it seemed to make him reconsider exactly what to say next since he wasn't about to admit defeat; no that was never an option at all. But, that didn't mean that he didn't have a trick up his sleeve that could turn the tables on this. Are you sure that's a good idea? Yes I know that's very Slytherin of you but I mean.. really. There are other ways to make a good point here. "Hmm, true." He wasn't even sure now what else to say, all logic had escaped from his brain now so this definitely wasn't about to end well at all. "So.. I was wondering if you wanted to go out sometime." And of course he said it, it might not have gone with the other points but at least he ended up saying something that made sense.

He wouldn't have cared either way what she'd been doing with the books -- Daisy still came off as a Ravenclaw in Gryffindor robes, but it still woiuldn't affect Damien in any way -- he still dreaded the idea of even setting foot into a classroom and have to pay attention to someone else lecture him on the wonders of the Wizarding world (or Muggle for that matter).

Clearing his throat, the Hufflepuff sat down next to her, setting the two books he'd taken from her load down on the floor by her feet. "I'm not quite sure two weekends would be a sufficent amount of time," he said, regarding her statement of being able to point him in the direction he wanted regarding some proper reading material. "Seems Vlad isn't the only mysterious content floating around out there."

Now -- he hadn't actually let the reasons be known to Daisy why he, Damien, was looking for such books -- on the after-life that is. And the two of them really weren't all that acquainted and he was rather weary of telling her those reasons. He'd started to talk about it with Isobel, but only just -- and very very little information for that matter. Still -- the fact remained that Damien felt rather comfortable with Daisy, the Ravendor. And perhaps one day he finally would be able to talk to someone about his life. Whether or not it happened during his last two years at Hogwarts was beyond him, but there you go.

Daisy was absently scratching her leg again. I really need to get new socks she thought upon pulling both socks back up. Or I could write home to Isador and get him to send me some? Writing a letter seemed like too much work.

“Funny thing mysteries are, aren’t they? Without them, life would be very dull wouldn’t it? What would there be to strive for if everything was known?” She rolled her wand back and forth in her fingers as she leaned back on the sofa. “But as Robert Vaughn put it – ‘The world's philosophers and theologians searched for answers to the same mysteries’ so there has to be something out there.” For both of us.

It probably would help Daisy’s searching if she knew more about why he was looking for more books on The Book of Enoch or by De Spina, but she wasn’t about to inquire when he seemed intent to keep it to himself, well not directly. She watched as first year came into the area and plopped down on a seat. Her next question was asked in a soft voice. “So did that book have anything interesting in it at all? Or was it completely out in left field?”

Whether Matt knew it or not, Stella had gotten a bit distracted when he'd slid his sketch away from himself. She'd wanted to see what he was sketching, and n ow that it was apparently finished, she couldn't help but turn to glance at the parchment. "Okay, that almost looks realistic. Where did you see a Phoenix, that you could draw one that well?," she found herself asking, before his comment about rudeness in lessons registered and she quieted down. More because of the obvious irritation in his voice than anything that he'd said, however. It was almost like he was actually sounding like a Slytherin. "Unfortunately, it seems that some people don't have the pateince to wait until after a lesson. And we all suffer for it," she said quietly, hoping for another topic so she could forget this little moment.

Their little debate at least worked somewhat. At least, her almost guaranteed win was amusing, and he hadn't seemed to go back into that scary mode. He definitely seemed like he'd needed to think to come up with an argument against what she'd said, at least. There was always the possibility that she'd never get him to admit she'd won, but in her head the fact he hadn't come up with anything to say yet had told her just as much. And she grinned as he acknowledged that what she'd said was true, but all the amusement at getting even that admission faded into a bit of surprise as he'd continued, and she blinked. That was certainly unexpected. It took her a moment to even shake off the surprise, but then she just looked at him for a second. "Were you trying to distract me?," she finally asked, not really answering him for the time being. She wasn't against it, of course, but c uriosity needed to be sated first.

With a book in her hand Nessie took a seat and got comfy. She wasn't too much of a book person, but there was a book that she needed to read. In her hand was quidditch through the ages. She wanted to read this book so she could do better in quidditch and become better with flying.

Opening the book Ness started to read. It was a pretty good book considering she didn't like books much.

Ahh... The library, the only place in the world which you could simply drift away to wonderland and escape reality... until someone distracts you while your reading. Ughh... Joanna simply hated it when people, especially when young people, do that. It always irritates her and it always will. Many people were surprised from the fact that she's a geeky bookworm, was it because of her looks or was it because of her personality, but it didn't really bother her (just as long those people don't get on her nerves). But one thing is for sure... Joanna ADORES reading.

The Ravenclaw stumbled to the library wrapping her arms around her large heavy book. Ohhhh.. How long she waited for this moment, to simply read her book without any sort of distractions, like homework or peculiar voices in the middle of the night, ughhh... those stupid owls. She found herself a comfortable chair, and she sat next to a Hufflepuff, after reading a few pages she noticed that she's sitting next to her best friend. Continuing to read. How could she not realize that she's sitting next to her. She poked her friends shoulder, and continued reading her book, waiting for a response.

He tilted his head to one side, listening curiously as Daisy explained her theory on mysteries. Ture -- Life might get quite mundane if everything was known to every person in the world. But one could ague the very opposite of that. "But aren't there others out there who say 'Ignorance is bliss.'?" Now he might be on the border of cynical, but there was logic in that statement as well.

Damien had been perfectly happy not knowing anything about his life -- his past -- his former life. But apparently the powers that be decided that it wasn't enough for Damien Murray to simply exist as a mild-mannered wizard attending Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Instead, he was being thrown into something you only read about for entertainment. Or if you want a good scare.

His thoughts were drawn back to Daisy as she asked about the book. If it had helped it all or ended up wasting his time. Did it have anything interesting? Well there was something, but it didn't make any sense to him at all. But Daisy was oblivious to why he was looking for books like The Book of Enoch and Devils and Daemons; a Study of the Muggle Supernatural and Magic. "There was information detailing how muggles might have a hard time telling the difference between a magical and a supernatural experience. That most witches and wizards don't believe in the 'muggle' definition of supernatural -- whatever that means."

Damien half wondered if it meant that it would be impossible for a witch or wizard to experience something supernatural. That it isn't common for the wizarding world to speak of the supernatural.

Which meant that he -- Damien -- was a complete freak.

Really? They used to use a Snidget before the Snitch was created, Nessie thought that was pretty cruel using a little bird just to play quidditch. She continued to read not noticing that a girl had taken a seat next to her until *poke* she felt a poke in her shoulder. She looked up at her shoulder remembering that Puffles wasn't with her and that it couldn't have been him. She then looked at the seat beside her.

"JO JO!" shouted Ness a little too loud for a Library. She gave her best friend a hug. She hadn't seen Jo in quite a long time and she really did miss her. She looked at the book that Jo was reading and wondered if Jo was a bookworm or not. Jo didn't really look like a bookworm, but you never knew with these things. "I never knew you liked to read." said Ness grinning happily.

“If ignorance is bliss, why aren't there more happy people?” Daisy quoted the oft-time counter to Damien’s statement. Nobody knew who had originally said it, but Daisy was certain that it had been a woman. However, if she had known in what context he had been using it, she might have been the perfect paragon for his analogy. Daisy didn’t know what tomorrow held, let along what 10 years from now did and she wasn’t certain she believed in reincarnation.

“Well, it does seem like a hard concept to grasp,” she tapped her wand’s tip on her knee. “A belief in magic as a means of influencing the world seems to have been common in almost all cultures. And while this is pretty much true, even if muggles don’t really know it, the mythologies of most cultures make it easy to see where the two would blend together.”

“However,” Daisy got up and walked across the reading lounge leaving Damien on the sofa. She disappeared into a shelf. There was a bit of rustling, a grunt, and a thud.

She came back a few minutes later with a rather large, thick book that she seemed to have trouble carrying. There was dust smudged on her cheek and lightly coating her hair. She half-handed, half-plopped the book down in Damien’s lap. “The origin of the words and their etymology might help with that differential.” The book’s title was in dull orange-red letters. Etemology of Muggle Clichés and Phrases by. P.A. Thfinder. It was old, but it would do.

She stood there with her hands on her hips looking at the book for a moment. “Or you could look into muggle religions…I hear their Buddy-ism is supposed to be enlightening.”

Lilly slumped into one of the armchairs. Wow, they were massive! Or was it she was small for her age? She turned on the reading light next to her. Lilly She opened her book, 'the day I kissed a crumple-horned snorkack' and took out the bookmark.

Cael relaxed into one of the oversized lounge chairs with a sigh. It'd been a long day and his muggle studies homework was giving him a headache. Designing a muggle board game was much harder than he'd thought it would be. How was he supposed to know what muggles would find entertaining?!

Sigh. He relaxed into the pillowy surface, throwing an arm haphazardly over his face.

Jayden entered the library, finally done with her homework, this was the perfect place to relax and read a good book. "Why hello darling!" She said cheerfully, plopping down beside Cael in the over-sized chair.

"How have you been? I've missed you terribly!" She whispered.

"Why hi yourself, Mouse," he grinned, pulling her half onto his lap and giving her a gentle hug. "Homework has been stealing all our time," he laughed while giving her a kiss on the cheek.

"I've been fine, other than the fact that I haven't seen your beautiful face in quite a while. Missed me much, have you?" he teased, relaxing against her. He felt so at ease with Jayden, it was hard not being able to be with her all the time.

"Yes! Homework has been horrid! I just finished with my Muggle studies, which was the last on my to do list, so I'm all yours!" She sighed, leaning into Cael's arms.

"So.. are you excited for the holidays?" She smiled, blushing as she felt Cael's warm kiss on her cheek. It was nice to see him, he made everything so much more comfortable.
