The Egg Assignment
The purpose of this assignment is to experiment with the given charms and take care of your egg until it hatches. Your egg will hatch if you look after it right. All eggs will need to be kept clean, rust free, polished, and at the appropriate temperature. If your egg is left unattended for too long it is charmed to tarnish, and either cool off or overheat, thus delaying its eventual hatching. What will hatch out of a metal egg? You’ll find that out at the end of the assignment!

You will need to keep a journal to participate. This journal will require TEN entries. You are to make a post in the Journal thread, and edit your post when you have another entry to add. One post per person! In your journal entries, you should link to a place in the school where you are interacting with your egg. Each entry must be linked to a post! That is ten entries and ten posts around the school! Remember its a term long assigment, so the posts/ entries should be spaced out in regard to dates, not all the 'same day'!

The five spells taught, which you are expected to use are:
Incantation component: meaning "pronunciation"
argentum: silver “ar-gent-um”
frigidus: cold “Frigid-us”
siccus: dry “Sik-us”
calidus: warm, hot “Ca- lid- us”
humidus: damp, humid “Humid-us”
Excolo: L. polish, adorn, refine and serve "Ex-CO-lo"
  1. Argentum Frigidus wand movement- swish and tap As you say the incantation the two seperate movements match the two seperate parts of the incantation.
  2. Argentum Calidus wand movement- swish and tap As you say the incantation the two seperate movements match the two seperate parts of the incantation.
  3. Argentum Siccus wand movement twirl and point As you say the incantation the two seperate movements match the two seperate parts of the incantation.
  4. Argentum Humidus wand movement twirl and point As you say the incantation the two seperate movements match the two seperate parts of the incantation.
  5. Excolo pointing movement except you need to move your wand and trace where you wish the spell to have effect
You’re permitted to use any other charms that your character knows if you think they’ll help.

When finals are on, a thread will be opened in which you can post your character’s egg hatching. This will only happen if you have completed the rest of the assignment! You will be PM’d about what will come out of your egg More information about the hatching portion (or not hatching) will come at that time.

This assignment will be marked out of 50 points and will take place instead of a final. The marking is divided as follows:

Things to remember:
x- be creative! The assignment is supposed to be experimental and fun.

x- the eggs are not alive, but they seem to have quirks. Maybe your egg twitches a lot when it is dirty, maybe it shivers if its too cold. Maybe it likes to wander and rolls off sometimes. As long as it doesn't actually hatch, or come to life, feel free to be creative with what your egg actually does and how it reacts to the different spells and different combinations of spells.

x- destroy your egg, get no points. Simple. The eggs are charmed to be pretty strong, and they might fracture or get a teeny tiny dent or whatever, but they shouldn't crack open completely... and if you want to blow your egg up, your character won't get any points. Part of the points will come from following instructions after all!


FAQ
1. OMG I don't have an egg, what shall I do?
If you weren't in the class you can still participate, just pretend your character was there and got an egg along with everyone else. However, please make the effort to read the instructions given in the first lesson! You can find this in the class thread as well as in the reference thread. I won't be telling you how the spells work, you'll need to find that out yourselves.

2. Can I choose what my egg hatches into?
Nope. You will find out what will happen with your egg at the end of the term. You should NOT RP your egg hatching until the hatching thread is posted!

3. What if I don't want my egg to hatch? Will I lose points?
No you won't lose points. If you still do the journal entries, and the posts required, and then post in the hatching thread with your egg doing nothing/not hatching/letting you down... that still counts as participating. It'll be entirely up to you what you do with it all. The point is to experiment and be creative!

4. Should my character carry their egg with them everywhere?
That is up to you! If you want your egg to hatch though, probably leaving it alone in your dorm won't do the job. Professor Schirmer recommends carrying your egg with you at all times, and charming it as required. This way too, you can manage the ten posts you need far more easily.

5. I'm still really confused and not sure what to do.
The point of the assignment is to be creative, and to allow your character to experiment a bit. I don't want to give too much in the way of specifics because the eggs are supposed to be different, so that you can all RP different things working or not working. You can PM me to ask if you are on the right track though.

6. I have a question that isn't answered, how can I find out the answer?
Send me a PM! I'll answer it and post it here if I think its something people need to know!

Option #1:
Go out in the castle and find someone that looks like they need to cut a rug or shake their booties a little bit. Teach a student one of the four dances we learned in class today. 5. Give me a brief history of your dance. Have fun with this and be as creative as you want. So tell me where it originated, who wrote it, etc.

Due to an unfortunate circumstance involving a snow dragon and fire, greenhouse three is no longer in operation. We need YOU to lend a helping hand, to restore the greenhouse to its former glory. Due to excessive flooding, the greenhouse is uninhabitable for plants at this point in time. The aim of this busy bee is to restore and renovate the greenhouse, for future use.

Greetings lions!
Here was are (IC) in February and I hope you are all doing well. Have you checked out the Gryffindor School Happenings notice board? You should because there is a VERY important announcement for you all to see!

Since lots have been happening with classes, it is time for another update!

Now, here is a brief summary of where we are:

Care of Magical Creatures Lesson One -temporarily closed
Class is still on hiatus while the Professor attempts to sort through some things. Perhaps some of her creatures decided to throw a party in her office when they thought she was leaving? The thread is currently closed, so subscribe to it to know when it is updated. We will, of course, let you know when it is reopened as well.
DADA Lesson One - temporarily closed
Professor Glass is still busy with a few things, so this class is also still on a hiatus.

Professor Schirmer has taken time out of her busy and charming schedule to teach a lesson about the Patronus Charm to us all! There is a discussion going on right now about how the animal form of a Patronus can reflect the personality of the caster, so jump right in lions! Every voice helps add to the discussion and earns us much needed house points!
Herbology & Astronomy Joint Lesson - OPEN
Discussion is wrapping up about the moon and we will be moving on to the Herbology portion of the lesson soon. It isn't too late to join in the discussion lions! If not for broadening your mind, why not stop by for some of the hot chocolate?
Potions Lesson Two - OPEN
The brewing process has just started and we are learning how to brew a potion to develop wizarding film! Make sure you have CLEANED your cauldron and EVERYTHING for that matter using Scourgify before brewing or following the next set of instructions! If any of you younger lions need help, be sure to ask an older student to assist you!

HistoryofMagicFinal

In class we have discussed the importance of “little people” in history, as well as the inner workings of a wand.

This final will be broken down into three parts:

Part One: You will choose a “little” person in Wizard history and research about their lives. Then you will write 2 parchments (paragraphs) on them and WHY they are important to Wizard history.

Part Two: After you have finished your research of the person of your choosing. You will be creating a replica of what you think could be the chosen wizard or witches wand. The point is to create a wand you think would fit them. If you find information about their real wand, discard it and only focus on YOUR idea of a wand for them. This will require 3-5 posts in the reference room of researching and creating the wand.

Keep in mind: The core. The wood. The length. And the flexibility.

A working wand is not expected (because as students it would be almost impossible for you to just master Wandlore), just something that resembles a wand. How it is created is not a big issue either (I teach history of magic not charms) as long as you research properly and create the wand. Materials and information can be found in the History of Magic Reference Room (Professor Scabior will also be strolling around in case any help is needed in the room, especially with wand woods).

The Severing Charm, Incantation: Diffindo
The Gouging Spell, Incantation: Defodio
The Smoothing Spell, Incantation: Glisseo

Part Three: Write 3 parchments on how the wand relates to the wizard and why.

Part Four: There is no part four. I said before there was only three parts. But if you MUST need a part four it would be submitting parts one, the links to part two, and part three.

Write me a story.
  • Two spells were practised in class - Incarcerous & Diffindo - I want you to write me a story that includes a scene/s where those two spells are used (they don't both need to be in the same scene). Let your imagination figure out how...it could be your heroine/hero has to use them to escape from somewhere, or even to capture an evil villain. Totally up to you.

    All I require is that you do 5 PARAGRAPHS MINIMUM - 5 LINES MINIMUM PER PARAGRAPH - and that you make it fun.

Worth: 15 points.

Due: No later than 1st November @ 10pm GMT.

Astronomy Homework # 2

Answer the following questions: (worth 5 points)

  3. How does the Moon’s phase’s affect our magic? (give one example)
  4. How does the full moon affect us humans in our everyday life? (give 2 examples)
(OCC: Use the class notes and/or other internet resources to answer the questions. If you need any extra help, feel free to shoot me a PM.)

Extra credit assignment: (worth 10 points)
In class we talked about the moon’s phases and how the phase’s affects our magic, our emotions and wellbeing as well as our daily lives.

Your assignment is to write a diary/journal entry of how the moon’s 8 different phase’s effect’s you from day to day. It can be emotionally, physically or linked to your magic (only manages weak spells, manages strong spells, spell backfiring etc).

The diary/journal entries for each day should be at least 1 paragraph e.g. 5 lines of text. The more detail and thought you put into the diary/journal the higher the mark will be.

For extra credit, worth up to a further 10 points, please complete the following activities.

1. Select two activities from the list of activities provided in the homework assignment. Once you have done this, you are to complete these tasks in the Student Garden and in the Greenhouses. This should be done at the time of month you think is most appropriate for the tasks by interpreting the information on your Moon Planting Calendar and the dates you have identified to be the best in your homework assignment.


OOC: You may do these activities individually, in pairs or in small groups. You are required to post a minimum of three times per activity to be eligible for full marks. The more detail, the higher the mark will be. Please see the list below for activity allocations. Greenhouse Three is still OFF LIMITS.

Potions need to continue to move for a month's time, so this means YOU have an entire month to take pictures using wizarding film and camera! Take pictures of your classmates, of anything you feel is fun, and exciting. Go out and play. Take pictures. Once you have done so. Come back to the classroom darkroom.

Once in the darkroom, you need to use developing trays to develop your pictures. Ladle the potion in one and then, with gloves on pass the negative in the potion. One minute later, you will need to take it out and put it in the second tray, covering it with water. Tada! You have a wizarding picture


The homework is due exactly one week from this post. It is worth 15 points. PM Droo linking me where you've taken the pictures (min 1 picture) then to your post developing the picture. You do not need a graphic for this homework, just have fun with it.
