It was one of those days, it was clearly the end of winter, but it wasn't quite warm enough to be considered spring or summer. On your way to Greenhouse Three you stomp and slush through muddy puddles where the grass has grown thin and the dirt is exposed. The sky overhead is cloudy but the chances of rain are slim. No.. what the sky does hold is hope for the warmer days to come.
Inside Greenhouse Three you find that the Busy Bee had been rather successful. Everything was neat and orderly, even if there were no plants in here as yet. So why would Bentley be holding a lesson in an empty Greenhouse? Hhhmmm I wonder.
The focus of the Greenhouse is on the long raised flowerbed that runs down the middle of the space. Empty plant hangers swing slightly from the ceiling as a chilly breeze drifts through.
Professor Bentley isn't here yet, but she won't be long.
OOC: The lesson has officially started, do NOT announce your late arrival unless you want to lose points. Just pretend as if you were there all along. If you haven't done so already then please read through the Herbology Rules and Expectations and the SS Site Rules. All SS Board Rules apply. IC rule breaking will result in IC punishment, OOC rule breaking will result in OOC punishment. Please behave appropriately and most importantly... have fun. If you have any questions don't hesitate to send me a PM.
Maybe... Philip? That was a good name. Was it a good name for a purple flower, though? Ashley eyed the plant, pursing his lips as he thought about it. Tilting his head, he shrugged and decided to get back to work, though this was going to be figured out by the time he was done! Next was watering, since plants needed that. And the professor had said so. Watery. Was that a good name?
He didn't want to flood the thing, so he worked carefully, making sure he only watered a little, and stopped at a point where it seemed he'd sprayed in enough. He had no idea how to gauge that, but it seemed okay. Next would be what he thought was the worst part. Even with gloves on.
Gross. ...No, that wasn't a good name either.

post 1 : dig a hole (oh my rowling...I sleep and BOOM!)

Merlin Kurumi was moving at a snail's pace. It seemed like she had only picked up her spade and turned towards the raised flower bed when everyone else seemed to be finished already. Th Gryffindor blinked a few times, trying to orient herself as students were all but sprinting by her to get to the flowerbed first.
Dragging her feet slightly, Kurumi pocketed her puffapod seed and knelt down next to the raised flower bed off to the side away from everyone else. She didn't fancy having dirt flung at her in the rampage of mini Herbologists at work. Kurumi thought about doing this with her wand, since it would be easier, but seeing as she was on the verge of collapse from lack of sleep...probably not the best thing to do right now.
Dig dig dig dig dig...
Kurumi even stuck her foot into the hole to see if it was a foot deep. Oh, wait, that wasn't what Professor Bentley meant. Merlin did she need sleep. Her logic was faulty and it was probably only a matter of time before she did something ridiculous. Her foot fit into the hole and found that it fit in with plenty of room - her feet were rather small - and decided that that would do.
Kurumi took out her parchment where she had written instructions on them and crossed off the first step.

Kennedy gently picked up his puffapod and carried it over to the flowerbed. He set it down where he was going to plant it. He got his spade and stuck it into the ground and turned it slightly to get enough soil, he then lifted the spade and tried to make a neat pile of dirt away from where the was being created.
He repeated that several times until there was a visible hole on the flowerbed. He took the spade and placed it inside to check if it was deep enough. According to his calculations it was, but it was still a bit messy on the edges. Taking the spade once again, he scraped the walls of the hole until it looked solid enough that it wouldn't collapse.

Gideon was about to move on to the next step, the watering of the puffapod now that it was fully planted. However movement down the row caught his attention, the fourth year thinking it a simply movement by a fellow classmate and almost didn't turn to look to his side. He did though and what he saw was amusing...Kurumi trying to put her foot in her hole to measure it. Though upon a closer look his friend look majorly tired and he wondered if her behavior had something to do with lack of sleep.
So concerned, Gideon left his own work for the moment and walked closer to the girl. "Are ye alright Kurumi," he asked quietly as he came up beside her not wanting to alert attention and give her undue embarishment if others caught wind of it.

Dragging her foot out of her hole again, Kurumi began searching for her puffapod. Where had she put it? It wasn't on the table...nor was it lying on the flowerbed next to her hole...nor was it behind her...where had it gone?!
Kurumi sort of spun on the spot looking for it, noticing bits of dirt falling from her. What in Merlin's name was going on? Was she that tired that she was literally falling to pieces? This was new...and freaky.
She looked up for a moment when she saw that Gideon had come over. "I'm fine," she nodded with an obvious yawn behind her words. You know, just stayed up all night nursing a plant back to help. Kurumi's hand reached into her pocket again for her check list when...she felt something crumble under her hands. Huh? Kurumi looked down and...well...she found her puffapod. Pulling the plant out of her pocket and sort of giggled, shaking the remaining bits of dirt from it. "I...just didn't get much sleep last night," her eyes glanced back over at the table where the sapling was resting.
Now that most of the dirt was in her pocket and off the puffapod, Kurumi knelt down and set it into the hole. "Just, cast Aguamenti or something if it looks like I am going to fall asleep."

After making the rounds through thr greenhouse and observing the students burst their seeds (which was rather exciting even for her), Seren then made her way back to the front of the long raised flowerbed they were working around.
"Well done everyone!" she said clapping her hands together. Brilliant stuff. Now they were surrounded by pretty colours instead of drab browns and greys. "Now, our task today is to plant the puffapods into this raised flowerbed," she said indicating the long raised structure before them. "First thing first, you will need to collect your items from the stores cupboard. You will need a spade, gloves if you didn't bring your own and Hippogriff dung fertilizer." ... oh and their wands... but they'd be silly not to bring those, so it wasn't worth mentioning.
She stared at the students. Well what were they waiting for? "Go on... get them and bring them back."
OOC: Lesson will continue in 12 hours.
"William has his gloves and a spade. Willaim went and got the Hippogriff dung fertilizer from the cabin.

“Alright everyone, paying attention now please.”
Yes no more being distracted by the prettiness otherwise they would find themselves in a bit of a pickle once it was time to get started.
“Though the action of the puffapod seed blooming is a defensive mechanism, the plant itself will still perish if it is not planted and cared for appropriately. So for this reason, we need to get a wriggle on and get these beauties established in their new home.”
“Start by digging a hole in the soil,” she said taking up her special turquoise blue spade, complete with engraved initials. “You want the hole to be deep enough to sold the roots and a good two inches of the stem... the reason we don’t stop once the roots are covered is because want them to feel comfortable and established within the soil, this way there is not risk of the roots becoming exposed during watering or while it grows.” And they knew that exposed roots were bad right?
Seren inspected her hole and estimated its depth. “About a foot will do... but be sure to double check.”
Turning to the floor beside her, she gently picked up her bright orange flowered puffapod, one hand supporting the stem, the other cradling the plants roots. It really was like a child, ever so beautiful, and ever so fragile. “Shake off the roots a little before placing it into the hole, this will allow it to breathe more freely and will support healthier root growth later down the track.”
“Now because the raised flower beds are designed with an efficient drainage system, we do not need to break up the soil with filters such as pebbles or gravel. Simply fill up the hole with the soil you dug out.” Using her gloved hand, Seren swept the soil back in and around the plant, filling the hole in and smoothing it out. “Pat it down gently, but not too hard, the aim is to tuck it in, not smother and suffocate it.”
Once that was done, Seren dusted off the dirt from her gloves and withdrew her wand. “Of course the first thing we do after planting something is.....” everyone should know this already, “...water it,” she finished. Aiming her wand at the base of her puffapod, she gave it a generous sprinkling of water, but not enough to drown it or cause root rot.... unlike that stupid snow dragon. “Then the last step, is to sprinkle a handful of hippogriff dung fertilizer around the plant, don’t pack it in too close to the stem, but keep it around the base.” She demonstrated by taking a handful of the fertilizer and breaking it up in her fingers, sprinkling it around the plants base, but not too close to the stem. “And there you have it.”
Dusting off her gloves one last time, she leant forward and sniffed the fragrant flower. Lovely.
“Right, so time to get cracking, you don’t want to leave your puffapod sitting on the floor for too long. Once you have completed the task and have cleaned up your area you may be dismissed.”

Then the last step is to sprinkle a handful of hippogriff dung fertilizer around the plant. Simple enough, that would be. Kourtney brought the fertilizer closer to her and then dipped one gloved hand to pick up a handful. She wrinkled her nose slightly as the smell wafted up towards her. Ugh. Hippogriff dung.
She pressed the fertilizer between her gloved hands to break up any slumps and then began to sprinkle it around the plant, spreading it evenly. Not too close to the stem. Stay close to the base.
As the last of the fertilizer dropped from her gloves, she clapped them together twice. That looked just about right. Hopefully, she had done everything correctly and the flower would grow well.

Now that most of the dirt was in her pocket and off the puffapod, Kurumi knelt down and set it into the hole. "Just, cast Aguamenti or something if it looks like I am going to fall asleep."
Gideon had moved a little quicker when Kurumi lifted her foot back out in case she stumbled backwards between the angle and her apparent weariness and he needed to catch her. However she handled the move and had simply approached in the end. He tilted his head slightly as his fellow fourth year assured him she was fine, watching her for a moment as if trying to tell if it was the truth. But after a moment to he straighted his gaze taking her at her words.
"Aye I will make sure to do something," he said with a nod agreeing to do as she suggested. The last thing he would want would be to see Kurumi faceplanted in the dirt or dung because she lost her fight with the sand man. At her further assurance she was only tired, he moved back to his own work...step 4 he believed...water the plant. For this, Gideon slipped his wand from his robe pocket prepared to do just that.
"Aquamenti..." he cast aiming first at a spot near his puffapod for just a moment as he made sure the strength of the stream was to his liking and he didn't drown the poor plant or any around it in the simple process of watering. Satisfied, the Gryffindor moved it to the plant itself giving it a healthy drink before ending the spell.
After Kennedy made sure the hole wasn't going to collapse midway while planting his puffapod, he picked up the flower gently, just like he had seen Professor Bentley do. He lifted the plant with one hand and with the other he gently dusted off the dirt that it had accumulated.
He kind of felt like if the was dealing with an infant. Having to be gentle with it and try not to grasp it so hard it might bruise. This thought gave him the chills. He did not know how to handle babies.
*SHUDDER*
He shrugged that thought off and continued what he was doing. After shaking the roots gently he placed the puffapod into the hole. There no more baby plant holding.
Potter Nurse || Hockey obsession <3 | Go Wings! || Geaux Tigers!
Done. Now to clean up. Kourt first cleaned her spade of the excess soil by casting Scourgify. Placing that to one side, she gathered the excess fertilizer into a pile and then lifted it into the bag.
Turning, she took note of a few pieces of debris around her work area. Picking up the spade, she walked back to the cupboard, saved the instrument, and then pulled out a dustpan and brush.
When she returned to where her flower sat, she swept up the soil and dumped it in a spare place within the raised flowerbeds. It was still good soil; just left over from the original digging of the hole.
Once that was finished, she put away the dustpan and bag of fertilizer, stopped by her flower to once more take in the fragrant smell, and bid goodbye to the professor. "Goodbye Professor Bentley!"
Fertilizer was never fun. At least, Ashley had never figured it would be. He hadn't had any reason to mess around with it until now, but his mother kept a garden, and would sometimes putter around in it. At times he tried to talk with her, and found that while she was in her garden, she was much easier to talk to than usual, and some of those times, she was busy with fertilizing. And so he was as familiar as he'd ever wanted to be with it, just from standing nearby while someone else handled it.
Now, he was going to have to be much closer with it than he'd ever wanted to be, but apparently his flower (Justin!?) would need it. So he took a deep breath before starting, making sure his gloves were pulled up as far as he could bring them before adding the fertilizer. Just a handful, sprinkled around, the professor had said, and so it wasn't nearly as terrible as he'd thought it would be.
The puffapod was carefully held in the center of the hole by Kennedy. He didn't let of it because every time he tried it would tip over, so instead he kept his hand there to balance it.
He took the spade and scooped up some of the soil he had neatly piled up earlier and carefully placed it back in the hole. He repeated this several times until the hole with filled with soil and the puffapod was steady on the ground. He gently patted the area around and checked that there were no roots visible because...well, the roots were suppose to show.
William takes the Hippogriff dung fertilizer out of the gag with his gloved hands. He sprinkles the fertilizer over the hole. Well, this is more fun than those other classes. Just got a little messy now. William is almost finishe planting his purple puffapod.

Nodding in appreciation to Gideon, Kurumi sort of flopped herself down on the ground next to her puffapod-in-a-hole, and idly began filling it up again using her spade. She glanced back over at the sapling on her table as she continued filling her hole. It seemed to be doing alright...could little plants like that be startled by the colorful explosions caused by puffapods around it? She certainly hoped that it did not inspire the plant to roll off the table to see if it could do it too...that would be bad and cause her to be back to square one with it - probably losing another night's worth of sleep in the process.
Kurumi's shoulder's began to hurt for some reason, and she realized that she had been...adding dirt to her hole for a little too long. Glancing over her shoulder, she gasped softly when she saw that she, in the process of trying to fill one hole, had dug another in the process. Sleep...it was needed...
Putting the spade down, Kurumi decided to just go with using her gloved hands instead. She pushed most of the pile back into the second hole and then padded down both holes. Yep....that second hole had never been there...nope...right Professor Bentley?

Elise smiled at the hole she'd just done and consulted her notebook.

2. Pick up the puffapod, shake the roots gently, put it in the hole.
3. Fill the hole back in. Patpatpat.
4. Water!
5. Fertilizer.
6. Clean up! Noone wants a dirty workspace.
According to her notebook, Elise had to pick up her puffapod and shake its roots gently before placing it into the hole.
Picking up the plant gently, as Professor Bentley had done, she gently brushed off a little of the dirt with her spare hand. Then, she shook it gently so that the roots would breathe.
Once satisfied, she made sure her hole wasn't about to cave in before she placed it into the hole gently. Making sure about 2 inches of the stem were covered, she smiled.
Scratching the second step off her list, she beamed. Onto the next one.
Kennedy patted the soil around the puffapod once more, making sure that the plant wouldn't just pop out and then die. Of course, that couldn't happen, but it was better to be safe than sorry. He clapped his gloved hands together to get rid of the soil that had stuck to it.
He then took out his wand for the next task. He directed his wand toward the base and said, "Aguamenti!" Water shot out of it and he slowly rotated around the plant so that it could get enough water, but not too much.
Right, the hole was dug. Now to put the plant into it. She moved over to her puffapod and gently picked it up, holding the stalk in one hand and cradling the roots with the other. She gently shook the roots, being careful not to damage it, then placed it into the hole... there. That was about right.

Elise smiled at the little Puffapod. It looked so happy that she was sure it'd be smiling... if it had a face.
Filling the hole back in with the soil, she grinned before patting it down firmly. Tucking the plant in until she was sure it wouldn't fall over or something, Elise pulled out her notebook and scratched off the next note.

Kurumi removed her wand from her pocket now and pointed it towards the hole that contained the now buried puffapod. Opps...wait...that wasn't the hole it was her shoe. Good thing she had blinked her eyes several times to focus. Eyes adjusting a bit more, Kurumi pointed, properly this time, her wand at the section of padded ground. "Aquamenti," she sort of yawned and a lackluster spurt of water trickled out of her wand. It was the sort of trickle that resembled the water flow one would get if you didn't turn the tap all the way in on the sink and things just sort of...dripped...and dripped...and dripped...
Kurumi didn't mind so much. At least this way she would be sure that she wouldn't over water the puffapod. She decided to sit down on the edge of the raised flowerbed, holding her wand over the spot and leaning her elbows on her knees while the water continued to drip.

After making the hole in the ground earlier, Janice took her blooming puffapod seed from the floor and shook the dirt clean of its roots. She totally regret bringing Egg to classes that has practical lessons in it.

Once it seemed most of them had gathered their needed supplies, Stella idly played with the ends of her hair as she waited for Professor Bentley to continue the lesson. Of course, she was staying away from using the hand that had been carrying the fertilizer, even though she'd set the small bag down on the ground near her pretty orange puffapod blossom. That was a given, especially as she was far from wanting to smell like hippogriff dung. She'd looked over again as the professor had finally spoken, though. Planting. Of course, she thought, noting down the steps being told to them even as she kept her eyes on the demonstration. That would be easy enough. She'd known how to plant for years now, back home.
She glanced at her notes again before she started, however. Just to make sure she wasn't going to forget any steps. She didn't want to inadvertently kill her puffapod, which she'd mentally named Tiger, after all.
SPOILER!!: notes
Dig a hole, approx. one foot deep
Pick up puffapod, shake the roots out gently to aerate, place in hole
Fill hole back in with soil, pat down gently
Water puffapod, making sure not to over-water
Fertilize with hippogriff dung fertilizer
Clean up
Once she'd made sure she was absolutely clear on the order of the tasks, she carefully stepped closer to the flowerbed and chose a nice spot for Tiger. Lightly scraping out a loose circle with her spade, she started digging. Every once in a while she'd pull the spade back out and stick her hand in to measure, but after only a few moments, she set the spade down on the edge of the planter. The hole appeared to be about as close to a foot deep as she could get without conjuring up a ruler, so she turned back to her pretty little puffapod. "Time for you to get settled in your new home," she said with a smile, not caring if she looked weird talking to a plant. She figured the professor would understand.
