| | Divination One As Divination lessons have been relocated to the ground level for the term, you'll find the classroom has been dusted slightly and there is someone standing at the front of the room waiting for you. That someone is neither human nor animal, as a being with the lower body of a chestnut horse and the upper body of a strong, muscular black haired man.
Take your seats quickly, limiting your chatter and staring, as the lesson will begin shortly. ooc: the lesson will begin in approximately four hours from now.
Lesson has started; please pretend as though you've been there the whole time unless you WANT to lose points =) |

"Many birds fly in a flying V shape," Kurumi offered with her hand raised in the air. This seemed to be the standard for most migrating birds and birds flying in general, so she wasn't entirely sure how much one could predict from this formation. "I believe the more scientific name for this formation is skein."

Raising her hand quite excitedly Jesifur spoke when called upon, "Sir, I've seen a very large number of birds do a bubbling circular pattern before, weaving about and doing almost a figure eight type motion. Then they would create a huge bubble and swarm in a different direction and start their whole sky dance again. It was amazing a few hundred birds at least! I watched them for quite sometime before being called in for dinner."

Pausing, he glanced around. "Does anyone know what flight patterns we might see?" Interpretation can come later. Sierra didn't look back up at Thereos, or whatever his name was. She was still angry at him for taking house points for a stupid reason. He was a beast--he shouldn't even be allowed to take points from her. Plus, the fact still remained that she was a little freaked out over the fact this centaur looked like the spitting image of her father.
Finally, she looked up, though she wasn't happy about it. Raising her hand, she said, "You can look at whether the birds are flying from left to right, or right to left."

Flight patterns? Kimalia wasn't sure about this question, along with the last question, so she merely listened to hear other students responses if they were correct before jotting it down into her notes. At least they weren't going to be gazing into crystal balls.. today at least.

And with the Professor's question, Evelyn frowned in confusion slightly. Was this a trick question? "Zig-zag?" she asked slowly after she raised her hand. Was that a flight pattern?
It depended on the bird, didn't it? Or how many there was in one group? Quote:

All types of flight patterns that we might see in the sky. Most birds fly in a straight line and flap in a constant rhythm, but some types of birds have a certain flight patten to help identify them. Or during certain activities the bird is partaking in."
More on those meanings later though, as for right now, it was just about learning to identify what the flight pattens looked like. "For the next ten minutes or so, I'd like you to research on a flight pattern and sketch on your parchments what the flight would look like." OOC: Signing off for the night, but Thereos will continue the lesson tomorrow. In the meantime, for Participation credit, spend the next 12-20 hours preparing ONE sketch of a flight pattern, either mentioned above or one that you researched (No. You will NOT get extra credit for doing more than one sketch)
Examples of flight patterns include circle, straight, strong, undulating, up and down, zig-zag, v-shape, triangular, and a whole lot more!

Nathan was rather suprised the centaur professor had not acknoledged what he first said when he remembered that centaurs were modest creatures so they would not be ones to toot their own horn about their extraordinary abilities toward divination, well that is their choice. He then heard the next question which hw had no idea so he wrote down the answer as soon as it was given: Quote:
Orithnomany- studying the flight patterns of birds.
He then heard the next question about the different flight patterns of birds. Again he had no clue but he decided to take a guess at it. "Perhaps birds flying in a straight line may mean something.".

Tori settled back in her seat and bit her lip, starting to sketch on her parchment. The one flight pattern she knew was the up-and-down flight pattern of finches.
She finished her drawing and pinkified it a little before pushing it to the front of her desk proudly.

They had to.. what? Draw the flight of a bird!?
Destiny didn't want to draw, and she would have voiced that if she wasn't afraid of having points taken away from her. She wanted to go into the forest and see the birds in flight up close! Pfft to you, Professor the Thereos.
Pulling out a piece of parchment, she slumped her shoulders and began working on her drawing. She wasn't very familiar with the way birds flew, except for the vultures she had seen on the Safari when they tried to eat her, but they were a little too complicated to draw. So, she would just stick to what she knew how to draw.
After a few moments, she sat up in her seat and pushed her drawing away from her. She was done!

| Toothless - Napoleon of Crime - Gryffinclaw - Owl Emissary - Pirate Auror - DoctorDonna Gideon was glad to see he had chosen one of the more pleasing forms of divination that the professor...Thereos was accepting of. Maybe class wouldn't be so bad after all, he mused taking notes. Upon hearing what topic they actually would be learning about the fourth year couldn't help but smile softly.
Ornithomancy...the study of divination by studying birds. Now that was something that hit home since his familiar Corbin the raven as well as his parents own familiars fit into that form of divination perfectly. Gideon already was familiar with most perceptions that seeing a raven was a bad omen.
When Thereos told them of their first class assignment, the Gryffindor went to work on completing the task finally settling on what he thought of as the fly-hover-fly pattern that he had seen Corbin do a lot. Researching it as directed he found it was a movement common solely to ravens which was interesting to find out. Picking up his quill and a spare bit of parchment, he went about trying his best to draw an example.

Hogwarts RPG Name: Amur Neverwinter Fourth Year | ~ Rise and Rise Again, Until Lambs become Lions ~ Charner blinked at the Professor's wise words about truth and rudeness with an open-mouthed stare. He was a wise one, wasn't he?
Ducking her head once again, she muttered a small apology, listening to the examples of flight patterns listed.
...They got to draw? Wicked awesome-sauce with pretzles!
With new-found enthusiasm, Charner set to work on her piece. A puzzled frown on how to get the perspective of the flight patterns right was set into her expression the entire time. There was a lot of drawing, erasing, drawing and erasing again. She even abandoned the flight pattern at one point to fuss with drawing the bird it represented. Probably not the best use of her time, but then she was one to do the fun things first. With a few minutes to spare, she scribbled down the rest of the flight pattern and lay her parchment on her desk.

Eino took out a fresh and clean piece of parchment, then began to draw a flight pattern. He first drew some lines that went into a circling spiral and then added several birds to indicate which direction the birds were going. It wasn't the best sketch ever, but he only had a limited amount of time to do it, so he was very happy with it. It was supposed to depict a circling flight pattern, so hopefully he had executed that correctly. |

Only ten minutes?! Kurumi hands fumbled with the strap of her bag as she tried to open it. Finally doing so, she pulled out some parchment and her quill and began to draw. Only...WHAT should she draw? The only birds she had ever really observed were small little finches that inhabited the cherry trees at her home during the spring. He did say to draw after doing a little research...
Kurumi flipped through her Divination book until she found what she was looking for. Bouncing, that was easy enough to draw, right? The only complicated part was that they flapped their wings at certain points and glided at others. After several minutes of checking the invisible clock on the wall to see how much time she had left, Kurumi leaned back in her seat having completed her drawing.
" Thank you," she whispered to her textbook. It was a rule after all.

Mina wasn't too happy about that. Her drawing wasn't as up to par as she would like and then there was the fact she had to think of a bird as well. Her mind wasn't as open as she had wanted, but she wasn't even going to voice that in fear of loss of points.
No, she would just keep her mouth shut and do as she was told once again. If there wasn't anything of use she could say, she wasn't going to voice anything.
Pulling some parchment out, she looked up at the sky and thought about just what birds she could remember their flight pattern. The eagle or raven would be too predictable for her since she was a Ravenclaw, so she had to think of another bird.
Biting her lip, she thought hard. The starlings would be interesting, but her drawing skills were terrible as is and attempting to sketch that would just be a disaster. She had to think of something smaller and simple.
Just as she looked back down at her parchment it hit her. She had it! Sparrows! |

Drawing.
Drawing.
Janice can't draw. She just can't. Whenever she tried to, it always ends up like a mis-shaped leaf with 2 petioles. She may can paint, but she cannot draw.
She took out a fresh parchment and a quill after jotting down notes and deciding that she will draw birds flying in an irregullar pattern: the north-to-south flying birds usually do when it's winter.

Ugh.
Sierra hated sketching, but mainly because she wasn't good at it, and she hated being bad at something. With a frown on her face, she dipped her quill in ink and began drawing. It sort of took her a while, since she had to form each and every line so slowly, but after a while, she'd finally depicted what she hoped looked like the up and down flight pattern of a bird.

Oh. They were going to study birds flying patterns... or whatever that was. Louisa was slightly surprised because that didn't make sense nor had any connection with the Divination she knew. Oh well, this Centaur must know about the subject waaaaay more than she did - or any human did.
The almost fourteen years old grabbed a parchment and a color-changing ink and started drawing... if only Enya was here to do this for her, she wasn't that much of an artist really. Besides drawing a bird's flight pattern wasn't that easy. She'd made up her mind to draw the gliding one. That was a pattern, right? Birds glides and then instead of flapping their wings, they use other ways to alternate their paths and maintain their altitude, her drawing demonstrated the obstruction lift. |

Since Ashley couldn't think of any answers to any of the topics that had come up so far, he just took notes, sitting quietly and writing. He still wasn't too sure how one would read bird flight patterns, since when he looked at birds, they really didn't seem to do too many different things, but he was going to do his best to finish the assignment anyway. He wasn't sure how much information he was supposed to put on the drawing, so he just drew it and wrote in at the bottom "Some birds soar in circles".
After a moment, he looked at the picture, and decided to write his name and everything on it as well.
