Department Head Atticus Aldredge stood alone a few yards away from the Forbidden Forest, by a path that would lead the class to the area where they would be learning today. His arms were folded behind his back and he had a warm, inviting smile on his face as he waits for the students to arrive. Though he looks friendly and composed on the outside, the inside was an entirely different matter.
It was an incredibly weird feeling being back at Hogwarts after all these years, especially to teach a class of all things. He never would've thought he'd do something like this - and fortunately (for both him and the children, probably) it was only temporary. Teaching wasn't really his thing, and being at Hogwarts brought back so many memories...
But no need to think about all that. On the bright side of it all, he was teaching a subject that he absolutely loved and about a creature he adored. So it really wasn't too bad.

OOC:The lesson hasn't started yet, so feel free to RP your character arriving to class. Don't go down the path yet though! Atticus will escort you all down it once class actually starts, which will probably be sometime around 7:00 PM EST (12:00 AM GMT) tomorrow. The lesson has started! Remember, don't post your character arriving late if you don't want to lose points. Just jump in and answer whatever question happens to be up at the time!
A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.

What do hippogriffs eat? Jonathan wasn't sure about this one since he didn't read that much about these creatures but basing from what he just have read in different books "They practically would eat anything." he said raising his hand again to answer. "From insects to mammals" he could be wrong but really, hippogriffs are known to eat a lot of things. So maybe those 'a lot of things' just means 'anything' at all.
Just out of curiosity though, are they going to meet a hippogriff after discussing it? Because it would be really cool if they did...... and dangerous too.
What did they eat?. Selina was not exactly sure. Only one thing came to mind, but she was sure that other animals were eaten as well. What they were though she did not know, "Well I know for certain that a ferret is on the list of what they eat."

Hmm. What do Hippogriffs eat? Sierra hadn't had too much experience with Hippogriffs. She wasn't known to be a very friendly person, so she had a feeling any sort of bowing she'd be capable of doing wouldn't be good enough to please a hippogriff. She'd likely just come across as moody, so it was best to sometimes just keep her distance.
Having said that, though, she at least knew facts about the creatures, and therefore the things they liked to eat. She was a pureblood, after all. "I believe they like birds and small mammals, although they also burrow for insects," she said, raising her hand.

Every time someone said hippogriff it got Kennedy all excited. He really wanted to see one. He's never seen a large magical creature and he was REALLY looking forward to it. His hand flew into the air at the next question. "Hippogriffs mainly eat insects and other small mammals," he said.

Harvey didnt know much about this creature having not read anything, but he decided that he WOULD read the books in the library for extra knowledge. So he listened to his classmates' answers.
They had to bow? Presley woud really rather curtsy. It was more...natural. She was a girl after all. She raised her hand, still focused on that tidbit. "Sir? Do you have to bow or could I curtsy instead?" She realized that she probably sounded like a stupid ditz, but she had to know. Otherwise she'd probably end up trying to cursty, even if the hippogriff got mad at her.
Then she realized he'd asked a question. "Don't they typically eat just insects and plants, and sometimes small animals?" She refocused on the class and the matter at hand.
"Well, hippogriffs are pretty big creatures. I would imagine a hippogriff would attack and eat most any creature that is not bigger then it since they are rather agressive hippogriffs. Tamed hippogriffs can survive on smaller animals such as birds and rodents and even bugs.", Nathan responded with his hand raised high.
Annabeth raised her hand, "Well I supposed, they would eat things like birds, mice, rats and maybe insects." she said, she loved Hippogriffs they were such proud birds.

Hmm... what do they eat?
Though he wasn't sure, he thought he could take a stab at it. Part eagle, part horse, right? He put up both hands.
"Sir, I really have no idea, but as it's half horse and half eagle, I'd assume it would eat a bit of both animals' diets?" At least, that made sense in Keefer's head. "So my guess would be small mammals or rodents, maybe a squirrel or rat. I can also see how it might eat vegetation sometimes, or even some insects as a snack."

The Gryffindor wasn't totally lost; he had read about the creatures in his textbook for this class but he was still much less knowledgable about the beasts than the majority of his classmates it seemed. As he took notes, August listened and then looked up as the Ministry official asked them what they believed Hippogriffs ate.
"Sir, do they eat plants and roots they can find on the forest floor?" he bagan and then thought about how they could also fly. "Would they maybe also eat small birds out of the sky?" They did have rather sharp beaks he rememebered from the diagram he had seen before.
Atticus shook his head. "They don't eat plants or roots, no," he said. "They do eat birds though." He nodded.

"They're carnivores, actually," Atticus corrected. "So no to the berries, but yes to the birds and rodents."

A question! And a good one to ask, too. Atticus thought for a moment before responding. "I haven't seen anything that says you can't curtsy," he answered. "However, I'd recommend that you still bow, just to be on the safe side." Plus, hippogriffs couldn't curtsy, whereas they could bow. No need to do something that they couldn't do, yes?

Like he said, total guess.
That was good logic, Atticus would give the boy that. "They do eat small mammals and insects, correct, but they don't eat much vegetation since they're carnivorous creatures."

Atticus nodded at each of the correct answers. It was good to see that most knew this much about hippogriffs. He figured most of them would know the answer to the next question too. "Excellent job, all of you. A hippogriff's diet generally consists of things like birds, small animals such as ferrets and rats, and insects.
"Now, I have one more question before I call the hippogriff herd. If you owned a hippogriff, what would you be required by law to do everyday?"

Gideon was simply listening to rest of the discussion seeing as it seemed to be rushing at top speed and when ever he had thought of an answewr, several of his classmates had gotten to it before him keeping him quiet. At the lastest question, he was pretty sure of a reasonable answer so he tried once more, raising his hand before speaking.
"They would need to cast a disallusionment charm on them, wouldn't they...since a hippogriff is not a creature to be seen by muggles especially when in flight," he replied lowering his hand back to his side as he finished.

Tori's first instinctual answer to that question was, 'Feed it every day,' but she somehow had a feeling that the Ministry man was looking for something more... specific.
"I think you would have to cast a disillusionment charm on it every day, sir," she answered politely. "To keep it invisible and out of sight of Muggles."

He's going to call a hippogriff herd after this? Victoria almost jumped out of her seat in excitement. YES! YES! She's finally going to see a real, live hippogriff! And hopefully they'll be able to touch one too, yes?
Oh. But first they have to answer this question. Right, okay. "Errr..." Victoria was pretty sure she had heard of one. "I think...I think that you'll have to put a disillusionment charm on it to keep the sight from muggles." Victoria replied at last.

Okay...NOW Kurumi was bouncing in place. He was going to call out a hippogriff...soon...for them to meet?! Could she just volunteer now, please? She had cookies...lots of cookies the the Ministry official of course, not the hippogriff. Well, that was a lie. She had tuna fish cookies that she gave to Walnut, so those were made of meat and probably things that he could enjoy should the hippogriff so desire.
Oh, wait, right. There was a question. "I suppose first you would need to prove that you were competent enough to be able to keep a hippogriff," she said with her hand high in the air, perhaps waving just the slightest bit with enthusiasm. There was a reason for those ratings after all. "Wizarding law demands that all hippogriff owners cast a Disillusionment Charm on the creature daily to prevent non-magical people from seeing them."
But...non-magical they were not...so they could see them...and SOON! Kurumi's hand went back down and she stared at the man with a wide smile on her face.

Alyssa got really excited when she heard that they were going to actually see a hippogriff, that she almost forgot to answer the question. But then she remembered and so raised her hand and said,"Sir, those who own hippogriffs would have to cast a disillusionment charm around it to prevent muggles from seeing it. The charm would basically make it invisible especially if it decided to head for the skies and fly."

Minerva gasped. Did he just say call it. She had no clue why anyone would want to own one or what you needed. She just felt a little panic at the thought of this creature coming close to them. It will be her first magical creature other then the elves if you call them creatures Minerva wasn't sure.
Kennedy straightened his shoulders when the professor-man said there was a hippogriff herd. He couldn't contain his excitement anymore. If he had a tail it'd be wagging SO fast it'd be considered a fan. "By law you would be required to cast the Disillusionment Charm on it so muggles won't see it," he said.
That was a smart idea. He knew that if he hadn't found out he was a wizard he would have thought a hippogriff was some weird mutant monster that turned people into zombies...Well, maybe not the last part, but something along those lines.
