Department Head Atticus Aldredge stood alone a few yards away from the Forbidden Forest, by a path that would lead the class to the area where they would be learning today. His arms were folded behind his back and he had a warm, inviting smile on his face as he waits for the students to arrive. Though he looks friendly and composed on the outside, the inside was an entirely different matter.
It was an incredibly weird feeling being back at Hogwarts after all these years, especially to teach a class of all things. He never would've thought he'd do something like this - and fortunately (for both him and the children, probably) it was only temporary. Teaching wasn't really his thing, and being at Hogwarts brought back so many memories...
But no need to think about all that. On the bright side of it all, he was teaching a subject that he absolutely loved and about a creature he adored. So it really wasn't too bad.

OOC:The lesson hasn't started yet, so feel free to RP your character arriving to class. Don't go down the path yet though! Atticus will escort you all down it once class actually starts, which will probably be sometime around 7:00 PM EST (12:00 AM GMT) tomorrow. The lesson has started! Remember, don't post your character arriving late if you don't want to lose points. Just jump in and answer whatever question happens to be up at the time!

Zhenya raised her hand again, "Sir, when you want to approach a Hippogriff, remembering that they are very proud but savage creatures, you must follow a strict approach. First you must engage in eye contact, and you must not break it. Then you bow to the creature, and wait for them to respond by bowing. If they bow, it usually means they feel comfortable for you to approach it and pat it or feed it, however if it doesn't bow back it might snap it's beak or slap its wings, and it's really important that you back away from them. Because I know their talons can be extremely harmful if they lash out at you," she explained.

Ah, yes, hippogriffs. I hope we get to see some this lesson. They're supposed to be very majestic creatures.
And yet, Keefer had a few misgivings. He head heard of a student being attacked by a hippogriff during a lesson decades back. Immediately, Keefer resolved to listen closely to the Professor man so he wouldn't be mauled.
Both hands up, Keefer waited to be called on before beginning his try at an answer. "Sir, I think the first thing to do is simply to make eye contact. It's just the polite thing to do, after all." And if they are easily offended, manners can't hurt, right?
He continued. "Then I think you're supposed to bow, while still maintaining eye contact. And if you blink a lot they tend to think you aren't trustworthy or something, right?" That would be bad. "Then if the hippogriff bows to you, you can approach it safely. If not... then you should back away so you don't get attacked." Just like that poor student years ago.

Gideon was as interested in the topic of the class as most of his fellow students were or at least appeared to be. Hippogriffs were interesting creatures and anything they could learn about all such creatures was something to pay attention to. Though standing near Kurumi and Selina, he could see both girl's overwhelling excitement and smiled. The fourth year had been simply paying close attention though he was willing to answer when he could so he raised his hand and spoke when there was a free gap between others answering.
"Like most if not all creatures, you should treat them with respect and not approach quickly and carelessly," he answered since it seemed like an appropriate rule to start with. Not to mention the bowing that had been mentioned certainly followed that idea.

Amelia was really happy right now, because Care of Magical Creatures was her favourite subject. So she was practically bouncing up and down while she raised her hand to get in an answer.
"Hippogriffs are really proud. So they like you to approach them slowly and bow to them. But you have to maintain eye contact while you do that." This was rather an important point. "Because if you don't, they'll think you're untrustworthy," She added as explanation.
" And if they bow back to you, they are saying that they are allowing you to pet them. But if they don't, you should slowly back away. Oh, and never insult a hippogriff in front of it's face. They hate that and can become violent." She actually had an uncle who had that happen to him. It was nasty. :/
"First sir you would bow and keep your head down tell the hippogriff approaches you. Once the hippogriff does you can slowly walk to it and pet it," Angelina said step-by-step.
Minerva felt herself step closer to William. If what the older students were saying she was a little afraid hoped they weren't going to see one today.
William gave Minerva re-assuring smile. Well, the dhoe is on the other foot, Willaim afraid of snakes, Minerva not. Monerva afraid of HippoGrifss, but William is not afraid of them at all.
"First, you must calmly approach it and bow without blinking. If the Hippogriff bows back, then they can be approached. Correct?" Chris wasn't sure if that was completely correct, he felt as though he left something out...

Excellent! They all appeared to have at least some knowledge on hippogriffs, most of which was correct. Either they'd already had a lesson on the creatures or they were looking them up on their own - whichever it was, Atticus was pleased all the same.
"Correct, yes! The hippogriff, classified by the Ministry as one that competent wizards and witches can cope with, has the head, front legs, and wings of an eagle and the body, hind legs, and tail of a horse, along with very striking orange eyes and steel-colored beaks."
"I see most of you also know about a hippogriff's temperament - how they're very proud and very easily offended. So for this next question, tell me, step-by-step, exactly what you must do to avoid being attacked by a hippogriff when you approach one."
"First, you have to bow. If the Hippogriff shows signs attacking then it's better to not even try. If it bows back, then you're allowed to touch it. Do not loose eye contact;it may be fatal. And absolutely no insults."
Janice answered after raising her hand.

Ahh, these were already trying to answer the next question. A good lead in, yes?
"I see most of you also know about a hippogriff's temperament - how they're very proud and very easily offended. So for this next question, tell me, step-by-step, exactly what you must do to avoid being attacked by a hippogriff when you approach one."
" Sir, to approach one you must first bow to it then wait for it to recognize you by bowing to you. Then after it has decided to accept you you have to move in towards it very slowly as they don't like quick movements." answered Justin.

Alyssa definitely knew the answer to that question so despite the fact that others had already answered, she raised her hand,"Sir, to avoid being attacked by a hippogriff, you have to show it respect. When you first approach it you have to do it slowly and always keep eye contact with it. When you get closer, you need to bow to it, making sure that at the same time you are still maintaining eye contact with it. Then you step back and see whether it returns your bow. If it does, then you know that you can approach it. But you still have to do it cautiously and slowly and not just rush up to it."

"Sir, first you must bow to them and NOT move a muscle while you wait to see if they bow to you in return. If they do not, then you have not been granted permission to approach them and must back away. If they bow back to you, they have decided that you may and you can move. When this happens, you can approach slowly and maintain eye contact without blinking. If you blink, you should back up and start over. In general, you should not make the first move, but rather allow the hippogriff to do so as it is polite. If you are really lucky, the hippogriff will move close enough for you to touch them or even ride them, but you MUST NOT be the one to initiate the contact." Unless you want it to attack, but that was a silly notion.
She sort of bowed her head when she had finished answering and lowered her hand.

Jonathan raised his hand again to answer the next question. "Well, you walk towards it first" obviously. How would the hippogriff knows who to respect to when it can't even see the wizard in the first place. "And a 90 degrees bow." it has to be, right? "then the wizard waits for it to respond. If he bows back then that means it trusts you. So you're basically allowed to touch the creature after that." he nodded.

Kurumi's hand shot back up in the air once more. Merlin had she missed this subject. "Sir, hippogriffs are carnivorous creatures that eat mostly insects, birds, and small mammals such as rats and ferrets." Kurumi lowered her hand and attempted to not bounce too much where she stood. She was pretty sure that someone had mentioned their diet earlier when he had asked them what they knew about hippogriffs, but most students probably hadn't heard the answer seeing as everyone was overly excited about having a proper lesson.

Hmmm...all this Hippogriff stuff was new to Auggie.
The Gryffindor wasn't totally lost; he had read about the creatures in his textbook for this class but he was still much less knowledgable about the beasts than the majority of his classmates it seemed. As he took notes, August listened and then looked up as the Ministry official asked them what they believed Hippogriffs ate.
"Sir, do they eat plants and roots they can find on the forest floor?" he bagan and then thought about how they could also fly. "Would they maybe also eat small birds out of the sky?" They did have rather sharp beaks he rememebered from the diagram he had seen before.

For a while Beezus pondered on what those kind of animals actually ate. Well..with their characteristics, though very proud doesn't mean they would go hunting down huge animals right? So maybe .. raising her hand for the first time she said, "Sir." Yeah. And she was also a little shy right now due to the fact that she thought he was actually a Professor.
