As you enter the astronomy classroom you'll notice that the room has been re arranged to make room in front of the windows for telescope gazing. The class is held at midnight. The desks are grouped two and two just like in the previous years. On each desk there is a piece of parchment.
Up at the front of the classroom Professor Roslund is sitting in his chair, and is lazily flipping through/ reading the latest issue of the daily prophet. Behind him on the blackboard a message is written.
Quote:
Please write your name, year and house on the parchment. Each parchment is charmed to turn into a name plate when you are finished.

Our opinions on Astronomy? That means it doesn't have to be factually correct, right? "It's the study of outer space. And it's not limited to the studies of constellations," answers Aiden after raising her hand up lazily.
Raising her hand, Em answered, "Astronomy is the study of the galaxy, and well the whole universe outside of our atmosphere. A lot of astronomy has to do with observing the star and planets and things. Like, you can tell what direction a star is moving by observing its color shift. It also means looking for aliens, and knowing where your towel is." Putting her hand down, Em fiddled with the name plate on her desk. It read:
Edvard had just started to work on the crossword puzzle about famous witches & wizards through wizarding history when the first few students trickled into his classroom. Closing his prophet with a small inaudible sigh he pulled out a desk drawer and pushed the paper down inside it.
Standing up he said firing off warm welcome smiles in all directions. "Good evening Miss Eden, Miss Castell, Miss Force, Miss Reed, Miss Carter, Miss Fanster, Miss Moon, Miss Skylar!"
"Good evening to you too Mister Doyle, I hope you don’t mind the late hour for class?"
Edvard didn’t have any time to get into a more deep conversation before more students strolled into the astronomy tower. "Good evening Miss Wilson, Miss Kieren, Mister Gert, Mister Goldstein!"
The next student who came into the tower classroom was none other than the boy whom had stumbled into his office by accident. "Good evening Tom! Did you ever check out the room of requirement?"
Edvard grinned inwardly astronomy seemed to be a popular subject after all since the trail of student’s didn’t seem to be stopping. "Good evening Mister Ashdown, Miss Charm, Mister Rowe, Miss Carter Hope, Miss Wheatborn, Miss Potter, Mister Agger, Mister Escalante, Miss Lams, Miss Takahashi, Miss Warrington!"
Bonsoir? Edvard blinked before he laughed and blinked at the girl who had greeted him in French "Bonsoir Miss Gardiner!" He couldn’t speak much French but a simple greeting he could manage.
SPOILER!!: Silent students
The next 10 or so students that filed in were silent at least when it came to greeting him. They either just ignored him to take a seat next to a buddy or because they just wanted to grab a good seat. Others were probably shy.
SPOILER!!: Talkative bunch
As a boy of what could only be of Asian heritage was the first to muster up the courage to say more than Hello to him. Edvard shoot the boy a friendly smile and also a girl from Hufflepuff "I'm very well Mister Katharos and? I didn't get your name dear (Trish) I hope you both are feeling good too?" He certainley didn't want to have to send a student to the hospital wing if he could help it.
From out of the blue the little girl whom he had met at the death day party showed up. "Good evening to you too Indiana! Sorry i didn't bring my superman outfit." Sending her a wink he turned to the blackboard.
*******************
Professor Roslund waited some more minutes to give the last stragglers time to assemble. Turning to face the class he cleared his throat and spoke to his student's "Good evening class! I'm Professor Edvard Roslund. I will be teaching you about outer-space during the year." Clapping his hands the writing on the board dissappeared and new writing came in its place.
"Before we go deeper into the lesson. Let's create a common ground to stand on. In your opinions what is astronomy?" Edvard sat down on the edge off the desk and waited for the answer's to start pouring in.
----------------------- OCC: The lesson has started. Please don't edit your posts. Keep the chatting to a continued minimum. If you want to chat to your deskmate then do so about astronomy, nothing else! I will add greetings to more people when i have more time. Do not RP arriving late. It will cost point loss.

William raised his hand. "Astronomy is the learing of the planets and the stars" William told the professor.

Gideon's attention wandered to the outer night sky visible through the areas left open for observing, only returning his gaze to the front as the new professor spoke returning all their greetings and starting the class. The Gryfindor eagerly raised his hand to answer, one train of thought coming to mind.
"Astronomy is the study of the planetary, galactic, and stellar phenomena occurring in outer space. " he answered lowering his hand back to his desk. It was something he remembered his mom once saying describing her chosen field of study to an unbeliever. He couldn't help smiling as he registered Kurumi had mentioned that it shouldn't be confused with astrology.
"Before we go deeper into the lesson. Let's create a common ground to stand on. In your opinions what is astronomy?" Edvard sat down on the edge off the desk and waited for the answer's to start pouring in.
Professor Roslund. Right. That was going to be easy to remember.
Treyen raised his hand the new Professor asked the much awaited question...and surely the man was only checking to see how much Antares had taught them, correct? "Astronomy is the study and observation of outer-space, its environment and everything that happens in it and inhabits it." Including aliens, if they existed, which he presumed they did, it's not like they were the only living things in the whole Universe. They were probably like Wizards, unseen by Muggles, except...aliens were unseen by humans, yes?
Whatever.
That was not important. Constellations, planets, galaxies, starts, comets and such were of REAL importance to this class, though.
Ira raised her hand and answered, "Sir, astronomy is the scientific study of outer space objects like stars, constellations, galaxies, planets etc and discover how they were formed and what their chemical and physical nature is." Atleast this was what she had learnt back in the muggle world! Maybe wizard astronomy was the same too?
What is astronomy? It was already pretty late and Lana's mind came to blank. Then again, she didn't really know much about any of the subjects she was taking. But that's why she was in school, right?
She raised her hand and waited to be called on. "Isn't astronomy just studying what's in the sky?" She raised her eyebrows questioningly. She also turned a little red. That was way too vague of answer and she felt like she shouldn't have raised her hand at all.

Willow raised her hand before addressing the dashing, friendly professor. "Sir, astronomy is a natural science, one of the oldest in fact! It's the study of celestial objects like stars, planets, and galaxies, and concerned with the evolution, physics, chemistry and motion of those objects, among other things!" she finished by flashing him one of her charming smiles, hoping that answer was good enough!
"Astronomy is the study of outer space, like the planets, stars, and the sun. Muggles also study about the outer space; they even made spaceships and send people to those places they study."
Everyone seemingly knew what the answer was. Jesifur in an effort to say something different raised her arm. When called on she said, "Astornomy is the study of not us. Which it to say it is the study of all the other things in the sky, not really the earth so much. But in some cases we study the Earths position to other planets and stars."

She raised up her hand and trying not to give an impression of shy to others since actually she wasn't,"Astronomy.."she paused and thought of in what way she should be answering in."Astronomy is the study of stars, planets and the whole universe. Is it?" She was a little bit afraid of answering wrongly. She sat down and waited for the professor's correct answer.

Elise scratched her name, year and house onto a small sheet of parchment.
SPOILER!!: parchment
Elise Fairfield
1st year
Ravenclaw.
Raising her hand, Elise answered the professor's question.
"Astronomy would be the scientific study of the universe, not limited to only constellation, but it's entirety. Including galaxies, stars, moons, planets and systems."
"Astronomy is the study of celestial bodies, their movements in relation to the rest of the Universe and other spatial anomalies that may impact them," he hoped that was concise enough.
Selina rose her hand and said, Professor, astronomy is the study of the universe and all of the interplanetary things in that universe."
Kennedy raised his hand, "Astronomy is the study of anything in space like milky ways, planets, dark holes, moons, and many other stuff," he said. In his Muggle school he never had Astronomy class, except in his Earth Science class where they occasionally talked about space stuff.

She didn't feel like being sarcastic or jokey today. She didn't feel especially happy, and what was worse, she didn't know why. With an effort, she focused on the teacher's question and raised her hand. "Astronomy is a branch of science that studies celestial objects, space, and the physical universe in general." Wow. Even her answers were tacky and uninteresting today.
What was Astronomy? Now, indiana was pretty sure that there was a big proper definition. But she actually didn't know it. But, she didn't let that bother her. She had a little idea of what it might be, well what she thought it might be anyway. Firstly she wrote the question down on her parchment, so she'd be able to write down what the other students thought Astronomy was. After doing that she raised her hand, with a smile on her face. She liked Professor Superman. He had a super fun lesson. "I think Astronomy is about stuff in space." Like. Not space as in the same infront of her face. Like outer space. "Like about planet, and stars. And stuff like that. It sounds really cool."
Edvard couldn’t help but smile as little Indiana was the first one who shot up her hand to answer. Listening he nodded “Astronomy is indeed about stuff in outer space like planets and stars.” The stuff was is you were picky planets, stars, meteors and so on.

Hmm... the Gryffindor thought for a minute about what he was going to say before he answered. "Professor, Astronomy is the study of celestial bodies in the universe around us."
Auggie lowered his hand after speaking and began to make tiny doodles on the corner of his parchment.
The next person in line to answer was a Gryffindor boy. “Yes in astronomy we study celestial bodies in the universe like planets, nebulas and galaxies to name a few things.” It was a part of the definition of astronomy so the lion boy would get credit for his answer.

Raising his hand as soon as he thought about the question for a moment, he volunteered, "Astronomy is study of the stars and planets and space and... all the stuff in it."
That answer sort of got away from him, because he kept thinking of stuff while he was talking, so he just ended it there, quieting down in a slightly uncomfortable way.
Eddie turned his attention to a student whom he initially had taken for a girl. Now that snake house member spoke up it was clear that it was boy and nothing else. Good way to stuff up, Professor he chided himself before responding to the answer. “You are right! In Astronomy we study stars and planets but there are much more to the field you might think. It’s not just about stars and planets it’s so much more than that.” Eddie wanted to elaborate there and then but stopped himself.

Here was one who was really trying to think and not just read the textbook definition.“ You are on the right track dear! The history of something always plays a big part in how we view something today or how much we know about it like for example the moon.” Edvard said encouragingly. He wasn’t going to go deeper about the moon since that was a topic for a totally different lesson.

Zodiac studies and divination! Holding up his hand to quiet the students Edvard said “If you want to learn about divination and how you divine meaning out of space you will have to talk to the resident divination professor, Thereos. Also zodiac studies lands under Astrology and that is not my field to teach, but otherwise a good definition.”

Yup, that about summed up everything on the topic that was rattling around in his head. Whether or not the Professor agreed was a whole other story.
Edvard saw the enthusiasm and eagerness in the boy’s eyes as he gave his answer. Including aliens, if they existed, which he presumed they did, it's not like they were the only living things in the whole Universe. They were probably like Wizards, unseen by Muggles, except...aliens were unseen by humans, yes?
Whatever.
That was not important. Constellations, planets, galaxies, starts, comets and such were of REAL importance to this class, though.

Atleast this was what she had learnt back in the muggle world! Maybe wizard astronomy was the same too?

She raised her hand and waited to be called on. "Isn't astronomy just studying what's in the sky?" She raised her eyebrows questioningly. She also turned a little red. That was way too vague of answer and she felt like she shouldn't have raised her hand at all.

Except the pretty Professor, Roslund, asked a pretty simple question. Thank Merlin. "It's a school subject." Easy peasy.
A school subject!
Blink! Turning towards the Ravenclaw Quidditch Captain Professor Roslund said "Yes it is a school subject." he was totally thrown off guard by the claws answer.
Shaking his head Professor Roslund said "As the majority has said Astronomy is the study of celestial objects such as planets, stars, star clusters, nebulas and galaxys and phenomena that has its origins outside Earth’s atmosphere."
"Astronomy is one of the oldest sciences and people have been studying the night sky for several thousands of years it began with the Babylonians, Greeks and Mayans or really any of the early civilizations.”
Sneaking a peek at his lesson plan Edvard continued after a moment. "Most of you have talked about planets. Can anyone name the planets in the solar system?"
OCC: I have not given a reply to everyone since I’m sick with a cough and cold. Everyone has though gotten points for their answers. Nice work! The second question has been posted above. A little reminder, don’t edit your posts.

Kurumi's hand shot up in the air. "There are eight planets in our solar system," she said with a slight giggle in her tone. How did she remember them all? Well, it had a little something to do with a television show she watched growing up along with her brother constantly rattling off facts. Well, mostly it had to do with the television show. "There four inner planets, Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars, along with four outer planets, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. Until 2006, Pluto had been considered a planet, but that title was revoked when a formal definition of a planet was established."

Edvard couldn’t help but smile as little Indiana was the first one who shot up her hand to answer. Listening he nodded “Astronomy is indeed about stuff in outer space like planets and stars.” The stuff was is you were picky planets, stars, meteors and so on.
The next person in line to answer was a Gryffindor boy. “Yes in astronomy we study celestial bodies in the universe like planets, nebulas and galaxies to name a few things.” It was a part of the definition of astronomy so the lion boy would get credit for his answer.
The next student to put her answer into the cauldron was a claw girl who was the first one to mention comets. “Good, you seem to have gotten the gist of it and it’s nice that you mention comets. Comets are usually mixed up with meteors.”
Science? Edvard blinked for a second and then smiled at the snake girl “Yes your right in astronomy we do study stars, planets and galaxies but I wouldn’t call it a science since that is a muggle term which I feel is just a big fancy word.”
It was nice to see that so many made the effort to be active despite the late hour. “Very good answer dear!” Someone must have been studying before class to be extra prepared. Edvard liked that trait in his students even if it was so far only snakes that showed it.
Turning in the direction of the boy that spoke next Edvard gave a small nod of approval as the boy gave a short answer but fully good answer to his question. The boy seemed to be yearning for something more advanced.
Another student that had done some studying before class, “Good answer!” Edvard said as he directed the word to the next student.
“Constellations?” Edvard supplied the young boy helpfully. It had sounded like the word the little snake had been searching for but not finding. “Very good and yes astronomy is exactly the study of stars, planets, galaxies and more.”
The next claw in line to answer also mentioned science as he explained what astronomy studied. It was becoming clearer and clearer that the students were very influenced by the muggle world. “Good answer!” Edvard replied.
Another claw followed that gave a short answer without much detail but in most he was correct. “Yes astronomy is the study of things beyond Earth but I’d like us to be precise about what things are.” Eddie said.
A badger girl brought up a question which needed an answer “Satellites are made by men and they are a tool we use to study the earth and other things in space. Satellites help us explore so yes you are right. Satellites don’t count.” He made a mental note of the rest of the badgers answer to award points later.
“I see. You are on the right track dear.” Astronomy was though a pretty broad subject even if you could hardly see it by the definition of what the subject was set to study.
“Black holes and strings are interesting occurrences but topics for other lessons, good definition though dear.” Edvard said before scribbling a not on a piece of parchment.
When the next claw boy started talking Edvard wondered how he would answer. He was surprised. The boy gave a very plausible definition. “Very good,” Professor Roslund mused the answers seemed to be getting better and more detailed with more time to think.
Edvard saw the enthusiasm and eagerness in the boy’s eyes as he gave his answer. He had really thought it through. “Good, good, we are going to talk more about history and how the movement of celestial bodies affects our daily lives, but that will be in another lesson.” He was so happy that the students were making efforts to make the lesson good.
???
Professor Roslund at first didn’t understand the badgers answer but when he did he smiled at her “Good job. We will talk a little about Earth in our lesson today.”
“That is true. Good job.” Had the snake been studying or had she remembered something which his predecessor had taught them in a previous lesson? No matter it was good that the greek background was explained.
When the snake girl trailed off Edvard feared that she had lost track of what she had wanted to say but she hadn’t. Instead she provided him with a decent definition. “Nice definition.”
The next one to speak was the lion prefect and she gave a very detailed explanation “Excellent answer, prefect Hollingberry!”
Laughing warmly as the next Slytherin gave her contribution Edvard said “We will definitely be learning all about space junk. Good definition by the way.” Space junk, he was definitely going to use that word in the future.
SPOILER!!: All good answers, points noted

Selina rose her hand in a heartbeat. She could name the planets in a heartbeat. When she was little her Aunt Jennette used to sing the song of all of the planets to her. It was quirky and weird, but spending time at Aunt Nettie's house was the best part of her childhood.
So she began to sing the song in her head. The Sun's a hot star, "Sir, it's the sun," Mercury's hot, too. "Mercury," Venus is the brightest, "Venus," Earth's home to me and you, "Earth," Mars is the red one, "Mars," and Jupiter's really wide, "Jupiter," Saturn's got those icy rings, "Saturn," And Uranus spins on its side, "Uranus," Neptune's really windy, "Neptune," and pluto's really small, " and Pluto, which is now known as a dwarf planet, not a real planet," Well we wanted to name the planets and now we've named them all, "That's all of them, sir."
Jesifur had studied muggle astrology so she was familiar with the planets. She raised her hand, "Sir, The planets are Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto."
Oooh!! She always know this. Janice raised her hand and asnwered.
"There was Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto. But I think that Pluto isn't counted as a planet anymore because its orbit cuts Neptune's in half.
"The planets are named by Roman gods, like Jupiter is the biggest planet in the Solar System, hence is called Jupiter, the highest ranked Roman god; Venus, the god of love; and Neptune, the god of the sea, because ice covers most of Neptune's surface..."
Janice had most probably said too much stuff, but there's no turning back now.
