Wherever did the time go, Professor Hadley no idea, but somehow her birthday had passed mostly unnoticed as Jeremy was no longer at Hogwarts and the school year was almost over. Well they still had another two months until school was officially out, but that time would fly.
Staring wistfully out at the rainy weather outside the classroom window, the brunette woman glanced around as she heard students entering the room for the next Arithmancy lesson.
"Take a seat, we'll begin shortly," Fina commented lightly, before turning back to look at the rain.

"You find your rational thought number by adding the sum all the letters in your first name to your day of birth," Tori answered slowly, glancing down at her textbook to be sure she had that right. "Sooooo for Denise born on May 15th, her rational thought number would be...."
She quickly finished totaling her sums.
"8. And 'eights' are the visionaries who focus on the larger picture. They understand the balance between the rational and the irrational and are good at combining the two. They also have really vivid imaginations." Yup. Now THAT was right, right?

Ohhh, calculation! Vashti perked up a bit as she grabbed her quill and started working out the expression. Finally, she set her quill down and raised her hand. "If I've done this correctly," and it was quite likely that she hadn't given the lack of sleep, "the Rational Thought Number should be eight. I found it by taking her first name and assigning numbers to it from the Pythagorean Number System, reduced it, then added it to the reduced total of her birth day number."

The next question needed a bit more effort and thought to figure it out. Using his parchment, he worked out the calculations as described for that particular number in the textbook after he turned to the correct page. Right...number values of name plus day of birth.
Finished up after trying both ways he could think of, Gideon raised his hand to answer. "Their rational thought number would be three," he said at first then thinking of how to describe the process to answer the second part. "You add the Pythagorean number values to her first name and add them up and then either reducing first or not add it to 15. Then reduce twice or once more. Either way 3 is the result of your calculations."
Alyssa finished her calculations and when she was done, she raised her hand and explained how she came up with her answer of 8. "Professor I first used the Pythagorean Number System and assigned numerical values to the letters of the first name DENISE. Then I reduced the numbers until I came up with a single digit 2.
Then I took her birth day number which was 15 and reduced those numbers until I had the single digit of 6.
Then I came up with the Rational Thought number by adding the sum of the letters of the first name with the day of birth and the number I ended up with is 8.
According to the Rational Thought Number, Denise who is born on May 15th, is a visionary who focuses on the larger picture and is not afraid to think outside the box. She knows that there is a difference between the rational and irrational and understands the need for balance. She does get impatient when others don't grasp things as fast as she does and doesn't like it when others' fears slow her down."
Alyssa totally hoped that she hadn't miscalculated or used the wrong formulae to come up with the answer. Worse yet, she hoped that she hadn't been reading the wrong books regarding Arithmancy.

Hearing confirmation that the number was indeed the Maturity Number, Kurumi returned her attention to her notes and jotted down a few things. In no time at all, Professor Hadley had moved the lesson along and Kurumi's head went back down towards her parchment as she began flipping through her book and doing calculations at the same time.

Seeing as several other people had already chimed in and answered, Kurumi kept her hand down, but pushed her parchment forward just a bit to show that she had indeed done the work.

Surely enough, Arithmancy and Professor Hadley were among his favourites in this school and there was no doubt they were going to be among the things that he was going to miss a lot after he graduated however him already knowing about the things they were discussing right now and all the other students in the class being way faster than him at voicing the answers were making him feel slightly bored. Not that he'd normally feel bored in this class anyway, he knew his very unhappy mood had a lot to do with it. It had been feeling like he was unable to enjoy what he used to enjoy before so, yes, it mostly ended up with him feeling that way.
Yet...when Hadley asked something that required some calculation, the lion boy quickly lifted his head from the desk. Now perhaps that was what he needed. A practical part of the class, keeping his mind busy by doing stuff, could work well with him. Therefore, even though he knew some people were going to be faster than him and answer the professor long before he could, Josh ripped off the page that was full of meaningless doodling to start his caulculations on a fresh page.

Seeing how other people had already volunteered the answer to the question, Amelia decided to just keep her hand down and work on the calculation herself.
Opening her notebook, she found a blank page and started working on the Rational Thought Number:
❄Suaviter in modo, fortiter in re❄| ⚕=equivalent exchange=⚕ | pinned ya!
So, that was really the Maturity number that Professor Hadley had been referring to. With a small nod, she started jotting down almost every bit of information that they were discussing.
Now, time for calculations. Okay, so she doesn't like numbers but when she had rummaged through her book and found the calculation that they would be doing, it occurred to her that Arithmancy wasn't too bad after all.. She started calculating as she flipped and analyzed each page's content.
"Hehheee.." She muttered with a wide grin on her face. She was very proud of her accomplishment. She had answered a given question that involved calculation. That was a huge thing for her. And she marveled at her achievement for quite a while.

Was it just her or was there a hint of excitement in the Ravenclaw's tone when she answered? Considering the girl never seemed excited about anything when it came to numbers, this was ... surprising. "You could say that. On a very general level, yes, your core numbers are the basis for who you are." Ah. Another with the birthday. "Yes, your birthday does tell a bit about you. Which would fall under your life path number." Very basic and informative number." "Even yes, the arrows of Pythagoras tell about you." Fina nodded to the Seventh year. Oh ... oh... she mustn't think about two months from now. She was gonna miss the girl... "That is indeed an example," Fina nodded. Not one of the numbers they would be working with, but it worked. The young snake seemed to be totally guessing on this answer, but conveniently enough, she was ... right on. "Yes, the personality number is actually one of your core numbers."
And the Family Name number was not a core number, but, "Yes. That number does tell about you." Fina nodded. "They do, yes, tell us about yourself..." And it works alongside the core, as mentioned previously. "The letters in your name do tell about yourself, and depending on which letters you use, you may calculate a different number," Fina explained to the young second year. Perhaps she needed to explain a bit about the Pythagorean system and converting the letters to numbers? Or ... A quick glance toward the older students, Fina suspected some of them might actually be able to explain. "Another core number, yes. This one, also called your heart's desire, does tell a bit about you." Fina nodded to the young girl. Looking around the students, Fina waited to see if there would be any further comments about the topic... any other suggestions... that was when her hazel eyes fell on an older student .. in the back. Joshua Carter always had something to say, but perhaps he was still not over what had happened in the Gazebo that night? Evelyn seemed to be carefree and enjoying herself, but ... Josh ... had not. But Evelyn cared for him, Hadley was almost sure of it. She was just not ready to get married. Admirable, really, considering she was almost twice their age and barely ready herself.
Sighing, she shook those thoughts away and went back to focusing on the lesson. "Most of the numbers in Arithmancy do pertain to, in some way, about yourself." Fina continued on. "But there is a very important number system that we use in Arithmancy to be able to calculate most of the numbers you all mentioned. There's actually two branches of number systems that Arithmancers might use.... But the one we tend to stick to at Hogwarts is the Pythagorean System. Can anyone explain how the letters are assigned to numbers with this system?" Yes, we're looking at you, the older students, in particular.

Though the last part with the reducing the double digits, she never really gave that method a second glance. Did people actually do it that way? It was easier instead for her to remember assigning the numbers one through nine and then back to one again...."But yes, we assign the letters A through Z in the order of the numerical digits 1-9." A chart! Good of someone to mention that! Eying the chart that the girl had written down in her notebook, Professor Hadley took it in. "Excellent. Yes, charts are very helpful to explain the system.... may I?" She asked, but didn't wait for a response, before using the gemini spell to transcribe the text from the girl's notebook onto the blackboard. That was basically what Evelyn had said, but different wording. "Yes, that's the gist of the idea," Fina agreed, nodding at the first year. Professor Hadley stared at the redhead a moment. Nine and nine and what? "I'm not sure what you mean by that, except the fact that the Pythagorean System uses the number nine." Yup. Maybe that's what the fifth year had been referring to. "Ah... going a bit into the historical significance of the system... yes, very true points, Miss Hollingberry," Fina nodded approvingly. "Now I know many of you are quite worn out from the term, which is why I've devised this lesson to culminate with your year-end assignment." Hadley hinted, but didn't expand further than that. They would find out more details about that at the end of the lesson. "For now though, we're going to simply go over the calculations. Eight of them, to be precise."
Flicking her wand at the board again, the chalk wrote out two main headings 'Core' and 'Core Companions'. Underneath the Core Numbers, it wrote Life Path, Destiny Number, Soul Urge Number, and Personality Number. Whereas under the other column, it wrote Birth Day Number, Maturity Number, Bridge numbers, and Rational Thought Number. "So I have eight numbers here. We're going to play a little game. I ask questions about each of these numbers, and you try to answer. No worries if you're wrong, this is all for fun." Hadley went over. "Now which number is found by adding together all the letters in your full name?"

Keefer raised his hand. "I got 8 as my final answer. First, assign a number to each letter in Denise using the Pythagorean system. Adding all the numbers gives 29. Reduce 29 by adding 2+9, reduce 11 by adding 1+1. So you get 2. For the birth date, add 1+5 to get 6. Then I finally added the 2 and 6 together to give me 8. But I couldn't tell you what the eight actually means about Denise."

Doodooooooodoooooooo, Tori was awesome, and Professor Hadley was finally recognizing it. Recognize, foooo! She giggled to herself and then got to work on the next set of numbers, even though she had no idea who this Nolan Reynolds character was. Huh.
Whew! That was a lot of math! But now Tori had to figure out why Mr. Reynolds, based on his personality number of 6, got sorted into the loser House of Hufflepuff.
"Would Mr. Reynolds have been a Puff because his personality number of six means that he.... has Hufflepuffian traits? Like he can accept responsibility for others, is a great finder --- er, problem solver, and is a domestic, natural-born teacher?" Tori put her hand up. "Also, here's my work for how I solved that one, professor, and uh, I got it by figuring out the corresponding numbers for the consonants in his full name and then adding and reducing and adding those numbers together."
She took a breath and nodded. Merlin, give the girl a drink after all that hard work! Hadley made them all work like her badgers!

Alright, so she got a little distracted. Just a little! She had been keeping an ear open to listen to what was going on, and just in case her name was called or anything, so all in all...she practically wasn't distracted at all. She just chose to have her attention on her drawings instead of the class.
But, that was going to change. Looking up from her notebook, she took a quick look around to see if they were still doing that game thing before listening to Hadley. Another question? Well, she came back to class right on time!
Wait, Professor Reynolds? Good Merlin, she didn't know he was one of the Puffs!!
That 'Y' letter always confused her. Hmmm. However, with Tori's answer, Evelyn assumed she had hers write. Hufflepuff traits? "Don't forget the dependable part..." she said quietly, still looking down at her notebook and drawing little circles at the top of her page. She was still just a little peeved about the whole party ordeal that had gone downhill from awhile back. JUST A LITTLE BIT!

Hmmm....Kourtney scribbled the name and birthdate on the parchment before turning the pages of her book to the personality number. Ah. Use the consonants of the name and then reduce.
Quote:
Figure each name separately, then add the reduced total of each name - first, middle(s), and last, then reduce that number to its single digit root number.
Nolan – N (5) L (3) N(5)
Michael – M(4) C(3) H(8) L(3)
Reynolds – R (9) Y (7) N(5) L(3) D (4) S(1)
Nolan = 13
Michael = 18
Reynolds = 29
Nolan = 4
Michael = 9
Reynolds = 11 = 2
4+9+2 = 15 = 1+5 = 6
Sliding a finger down to the number 6, she read silently. Then she raised her hand. "I, like Tori, did the same in calculating the number; by determining the number of each name separately, then reduced them, and then added all three together, which gave me 15. I then reduced the 15 to 6..."
She paused, and went on. "Also, his need to feel prized and valued might have been a trait that had placed him into Hufflepuff; though I suppose one can argue that most people have that particular need."

Professor Reynolds! She didn't know his middle name was Michael! Kurumi remembered him from her first term. Namely, what she remembered right now was one of her final lessons with him - or was it the last one? - where Peeves had showed up and taken crystal balls and his glasses and levitated them around the room. Kurumi had mostly just sat their in her desk with her jaw hanging wide opened not knowing what else to do. It had been the first time she had ever seen a ghost up close like that, so she found the experience intriguing.
But, while she was sitting there remembering Professor Reynolds, Professor Hadley had assigned the next portion of class. While Kurumi proceeded with her calculations, several hands went up to say the answer, so Kurumi decided to cease racing and use these time to see if she came up with the same answer. Yep. Same as those who had already responded, so that meant that they were all correct - or that they had all made the same mistake.

May be perceived as careless with your appearance or as living in an untidy, disorganized home. Often viewed as interfering in family matters and possessing idealized notions of romance and marriage, making it challenging to find a "perfect" mate.
Once six had been confirmed, Kurumi read over the description of the number and thought back on Professor Reynolds, what she knew at least, and then raised her hand. "In the description is says that people with the number 6 as their personality number are great problem solvers, and Hufflepuffs are known to be very good finders..." At least, she thought she had heard that somewhere before. Could have been one of her brothers goofing off though. "The guarding and dependable description also seems to go hand in hand with the House of Hufflepuff being loyal, along with six's description of taking responsibility for others. Also, a trait of Hufflepuff is being patient, and Professor Reynolds was certainly that, and also seems to tie into six's description." Then...wasn't there some sort of relationship drama between him and the Charms professor at that time? At least, Kurumi thought she had heard whispers of that in the corridors, but it probably wasn't a good idea to bring THAT up in the class discussion.
