Arithmancy One: Introduction to Spell Numerization & Basic Curse-Breaking
The room was breezy, which wouldn't have been terribly strange for the November day except that the windows closed. Having just finished rearranging the desks for about the fifth time that morning, Professor Hadley settled on having the desks pushed together in pairs.
Resting her backside against her own desk, she was flipping through the latest copy of Numbers and You as she waited the arrival of the students.
ooc: please take your seats and keep chatting to a minimum. Lesson will begin as soon as enough of you have posted arriving <3 Lesson has started. "It's nice to meet you too," Nora giggled, softly shaking Jesifur's hand. "I'm Nora." Uhm... "Nora Reed," she added hurriedly, since she had said her whole name.
She looked for a moment at her piece of parchment, but soon enough, looked up at her partner and smiled. "So... we have nineteen," she wrote it down, "twenty eight," again, she wrote it down, "thirty seven, fifty two and..." zero eight zero? What was that supposed to mean? Anyway, she wrote that down as well, and looked once again at Jesifur. "How about... nineteen means something like... a road through a town." Yes, that was lame, but it made a little bit of sense. Kind of. "Like... one is the beginning, or the entrance to the town, and nine is the ending; the other part of the town."

Oh yeah, she need a partner. She saw an older student also need a partner, then she went to her.
"Would you mind if I will be your partner?" asked her. She noticed that the student was a hufflepuff... Never mind..

Time to see the reaction to her silly idea.
"That's actually quite clever," said Jesifur, "I was thinking Motherhood for 19. Like, the number one represents the baby and the nine represents the end of the mothers childhood? I know so very little about this subject though. I just let my imagination run wild."

Nora grinned when Jesifur told her that that was clever. She didn't quite think so, but at least it made the tiniest bit of sense. Listening to her idea, her grin got even wider. "You know, that's a really good point. But then again, we can go on with idea for... forever. The main idea is a beginning and an ending." Right?
Moving on. "Twenty eight..." Hmmm. "Well, eight doesn't really exist without two." Meaning? "Business and success doesn't really exist without relationships and harmony." Riiiiight? "What do you think?" Maybe she was talking too much.

She looked around the room in hopes of spotting someone who hadn't yet found a partner. Oh!
Adanna walked over to the boy who'd just called out. "If you don't mind working with a first year, and a girl no less, I'll take up up on that!"
Daichi turned his head around when a young girl walked up to him. He smiled broadly as he nodded his head yes. "I don't mind~ sit sit!" He said and motioned for the girl to sit down.
Right, okay so now he had a partner ...what now? The second year looked around at what others were doing and decided to do the same thing. He grabbed a piece of parchment and wrote the numbers that were written on the blackboard.

He shoved the parchment to the middle of the table and as a he looked up at the girl he mentally slapped his forehead. "Oh, i'm Daichi by the way." He said with a wave of his hand. Seeing as her and the Ravenclaw were in agreement, Kurumi made slight adjustments to their parchment before listening to what she had to offer about the next two.
Kurumi nodded. "I think it might also be implying that you should not take either for granted. Also, the mention of duality is interesting. It could be connected to the relation between mind and matter and when the properties of 8 are linked to it could imply that the only way for self mastery of our own duality is through harmony with others." She looked back at Aurora. "Good thinking." And time to add some more notes.
SPOILER!!: Gryffinclaw parchment!
Arithmancy Lesson One - Two Digit Number Characterizations
Kurumi Hollingberry_____________________Aurora Opal
Gryffindor // fourth Year________________Ravenclaw // first year 19
Possible meaning: 1 and 9 indicate the bookends of a stage of life, therefore their combined meanings represent a transition from one part in your life to another and a turning point in one's leadership. The things learned from the the stage in your life you are exiting (as indicated by the qualities of number one) are not to be applied on a broader scale and ideas should be shared. 28
Possible meaning: Living life in extremes will never lead to success and only true success can be found in the harmony and balance with others. Only through finding a balance in life will you find peace and control over your relationship with mind and matter. 37
Having added to her notes, Kurumi leaned back in her seat a bit and read over the descriptions of 3 and 7. House elf magic? That was...interesting that it was mentioned, especially considering what had been going on recently and Kurumi's mind locked in on that. "Maybe...combined 37 implies individual evolution through experiencing the joy of life and producing your own form of magic." Yep, that last bit was taken from the house elves. "Witches and wizards always describe house elf magic as being 'their own kind' of magic. While there are laws regarding what we can or cannot do in regards to spells, I don't think it means making up your own spells. Rather, really putting yourself into what you are doing, who you are, and making it your own." She cocked her head to the side. "That...really doesn't make much sense, does it...?"
Orr thought about it and nodded, "It does make sense to me actually. There are witches and wizards who like to lay claim to things that aren't their own. I also think that it might refer to taking responsibility for your own actions."
Orr looked at their shared parchment again
"What is next? 52? Well there's the two again and we know that it is about the harmony and unity." She looked up what five represented. "So Five is similar since it looks at transition and change...that sort of thing. So um maybe five and two combined means to just be free and to live life to the fullest. Not to be uptight and stressed out?"

"My immediate though on 28 was Marriage. Partnerships and harmony, it just seems like it would represent marriage, don't you think, Nora?"
Jesifur looked over the notes again.

Jesifur looked over the notes again.
Marriage. "Another good point," she smiled at Jesifur. Looking back at her notes, she added the ideas they had for the first two numbers. She couldn't help but grin as she wrote them down. They were doing pretty good, weren't they?
"Thirty seven," Nora went on. "I suppose three and seven are pretty... opposite. Three seems happier and creative, while seven is more about knowledge and wisdom. But I don't exactly have an idea for this one." Help? Pretty please?

Hmmm, 37. Aside from the fact it immediately reminded her of her Ravenclaw Mother. She had no idea.
Deciding it was better to suggest something to Nora, who was looking at her quite expectantly, she said, "I don't really know other than it reminds me of Ravenclaws I guess. They are very smart and creative and tend to operate on their own. I'd guess that or simply a wise wizard or witch? But again it is just a guess."

"What do you mean?" Nora asked curiously, when Jesifur mentioned that it reminded her of Ravenclaws. Focusing on her uniform, the girl was a Hufflepuff, which made even less sense to Nora. But maybe the Ravenclaws had a... number? Uhm...
"Yes," she nodded at her idea. "Or... you know, just like twenty eight, seven doesn't exist without a bit of three. Analysis and research don't exist without a bit of imagination and creativity."

"... right?"
Jesifur noticed Nora look at her oddly. "You see, my mother was a Ravenclaw and just reading down the characteristics of those two numbers, it sounds like mom to a tee. But you are also correct one does not exist without the other, in order to analyze and research one must have imagination and creativity. Geez, Arithmancy is hard, there are so many possible answers."
"I guess just write them all down and maybe we'll get some right." Jesifur wasn't sure of any of this Arithmancy stuff.
She much preferred subjects that had a solid and correct answer. Even divination seemed more scientific than Arithmancy. Jesifur really hoped she would catch on quicker with this subject. It was nothing like mathematics, though she thought it might be. The only thing math and Arithmacy had in common was they both dealt in numbers.
"Now everyone take a few moments, with a partner, and make a list of what you think the characteristics of the following numbers are..."

"If you can't find a single partner, you're more than welcome to work in groups of three." Fina noted. "We will move onto the next activity once you've completed this..."
Louisa glanced around searching for any familiar faces.. or friendly ones that could take her in. "Anyone needs a partner?" She asked in general.

Nora smiled when Jesifur told her about her mother. Well, that made sense. "Ah, I see." As for her idea... this seemed to almost become a rule for the numbers given by professor Hadley. One can't exist without the other, that is. But of course it wasn't a rule for all the possible numbers.
Buuut moving on. Glancing at her notes, she realized that they were almost done. "Fifty two." With another quick glance at their meanings... uhh, this was even more confusing. They've already talked about two; harmony and relationships, but five... change? Freedom?
"Oh!" Nora said a bit louder than she meant. "A change for the better." Or... something like that. "I mean... harmony can result from a good change or," she looked again at the meanings, "freedom." Now... did this made any sense at all?
She nodded at Ira, "Yeah, I also have the same idea," she said. Seeing that Erin was lost in thought to figure out the meanings of the numbers, she offered to continue the jotting down.
"Now comes last number, finally!" Ira was happy that it was coming to an end."Why do you think professor wrote it as 080? Does this mean that 0 is more focused than 8? I mean, maybe 0's characteristics are doubly focused as that of 8...Maybe."
"So does this mean that business or finances are getting empty...meaning thre are many losses?"
Nora smiled when Jesifur told her about her mother. Well, that made sense. "Ah, I see." As for her idea... this seemed to almost become a rule for the numbers given by professor Hadley. One can't exist without the other, that is. But of course it wasn't a rule for all the possible numbers.

Jesifur was also looking at the notes. 52. hmmm, 5 - change, versatility, physical world/ physical touch and 2 - harmony, collaboration, human/human magic. hmmm. It did read as if change brings harmony, and there seemed to be a correlation between the two. It sorta reminded Jesifur of not that long ago, when she herself became a double digit and found out she'd be going to Hogwarts....
"Nora, does it make you think of when you got into Hogwarts? The number 52 that is? When I was looking at the notes, it reminded me of when I physically turned 10 and got my letter for school. I became a dual person at that point, didn't we all? I don't know, maybe I'm reaching too far, just write down what you said..."

Hmmm.
Listening to Jesifur's theory, it only made Nora a bit more confused. "You're right about the change," she muttered with a nod, almost as if she was talking more to herself. It took her several moments to realize what the Hufflepuff was talking about. "I got it now." Yup, it was all clear.
Looking at her notes, a grin made its way on her face. "I have an idea for the last one." The zero eight zero thing. "Eight means authority and business, while zero means... nothing. Emptiness. Maybe it means that the important ones," authority, business men, and so on, "get so cold and maybe... lonely?" Was that the right word? "Because of their important jobs," she finished, grinning again.
Penny looked over to Alyssa and had a thought.."Alyssa you want to partner up for this task?....I've already started, but I could be totally wrong again", she finished with a wry smile.
"Oh definitely YES!!. I'm going to need your brains, because right now mine is fried with all these numbers swimming around."Alyssa was glad that Penny had thought of partnering with her. She pulled her chair closer to Penny.
"Okay what are we supposed to do?"

SPOILER!!: PhoenixRising
SPOILER!!: Those thinking to reduce...
Professor Hadley just smiled as students began their guessing of what 'forty-seven' might mean. Oh, some of them were quite ready to begin name calculations. Such a pity that they weren't doing that today.
"The reduction would be correct, under normal Arithmatical calculations." She paused. "But alas, none of those calculations in today's class." So sadly, both eleven and two, are wrong.
SPOILER!!: Adding MORE math?! o.O
"While those are both very ... intellectual guesses," Hadley began, staring at the Gryffindor and the Hufflepuff, wide eyed. "You're over-thinking this." No need for division or prime numbers! She wasn't THAT insane!
Before she could respond to any other inquiries, Fina had to stare at a young Ravenclaw. "Miss Takahashi...I'm afraid I don't understand a WORD you're saying." She could have sworn the fourth year was FINE not too long ago, but things happen in seconds at Hogwarts. "Nonetheless, five points from you for somehow managing to take a babbling draught during a lesson."
ooc: in the first post of this thread, I say CLEARLY, DO NOT EDIT. Editing for coding is fine, but content is NOT. I don't care if you posted the same time as me with an answer to the previous question/task. Post again. I'll merge if I have to.
SPOILER!!: Some combination of reducing and combining meanings...
Now. Where was she was? "Oh! You lot are getting closer... Thinking about combining the characteristics..." Nevermind the fact that one girl included 11 in her combination, but at least she didn't think a TWO was involved. And she had mentioned balancing them out.... the characteristics.
"Er... close..." She guessed. Formation is four and wisdom is seven. She could see where he got that from.
SPOILER!!: Those who said to combine the meanings...
At first she hadn't been sure the one Ravenclaw had figured it out, what with her vague answer, but actually, that was precisely it and would totally help for the next activity.

It was no secret that Cassie sucked at Arithmancy. It was her worst subject ever but she was determined to some who pass this subject. Her head of house was the teacher after all. Maybe she should think about asking her for extra lessons.
After she made her list, she looked around and spotted Marilyn. Perfect. Hopefully the Slytherin was better at this than she was.
"Right here Mar." She said walking over to her.

"Yes, Nora I see your point on that. My translation is quite similar but maybe more general, when I see 080 I see failure. Simple. Nothing. success. nothing. See, it's a pattern of failure..."

Jotting something down, she looked over to spot Cassie not too far away. Thank Merlin. Making some room for her bestie, she moved her things so Cass could sit.
"She threw me for a loop when she said we wouldn't be adding these numbers..." She was more than a little confused. Basic Arithmancy told her that you simplify numbers to reach an end result.
Pulling the text, Marilyn flipped through it...looking for an entry that would allow some insight. "Do you know what she's talking about, Cass?"

The boy had accepted her offer of accepting his offer! Wait, what? Anyway, Adanna sat next to him when he had asked her to, and watched as he jotted down the numbers from the board to this parchment. Oh no. She had forgotten her parchment and quill! It was too late to fetch them now, wasn't it? She had already sat down, after all. So she put it behind her, reminding herself to copy down what they discussed as soon as she had the chance.
"I'm Adanna. First year Hufflepuff." she announced with a wide grin. So, the boy, Daichi, was a Slytherin? A year older than she, at that. He seemed pretty pleasant, however, so she decided to concentrate on the assignment. "Hm. You could be on a good track with that! Makes sense. You could even look at it as ending to beginning, instead of beginning to end. Like a new beginning, or how one things starts when and/or because another ends. If that makes sense, of course!"
"Ultimately this list contains the essential characteristics of each of the numbers zero through nine. As such, what might this indicate for a combination of numbers such as 47?" Fina asked. Nice random, two digit number. [/COLOR]
