Arithmancy One: Introduction to Spell Numerization & Basic Curse-Breaking
The room was breezy, which wouldn't have been terribly strange for the November day except that the windows closed. Having just finished rearranging the desks for about the fifth time that morning, Professor Hadley settled on having the desks pushed together in pairs.
Resting her backside against her own desk, she was flipping through the latest copy of Numbers and You as she waited the arrival of the students.

Erin smiled at her widely. From Ira's side, she moved in between the two girls and nudged her pretty friend Beezus on her side. Then, they both giggled. She took her quill and wrote down Beezus' idea. Then she took the time to write down her ideas as well.

She just nodded as Erin wrote down their answers. "Yeah, that's right. For the 28 I mean," she said. It was a good thing Erin had volunteered to write it down.

She referred to her list of the number's characteristics. "Well, 37 can be a creative expression of wisdom or magic, I think." she told the girls.

Amethyst sighed softly when the professor talked of being in groups. Ame was a shy girl, but knew, in order to participate in class, she needed to work with someone. After all, the teacher's here, no one's going to bite. She hoped. "Anyone want to work with me? I'm a first year, Hufflepuff, if that matters..." She looked around to see if there were and takers.

Once that had been done, she looked up again. "Does anyone want to be my partner?," she asked, smiling a little to herself as she didn't detect as much of an accent this time. Alright so they weren't doing the usual and reducing the numbers thise time, Gideon mused to himself as the professor corrected him and the group who had thought that. The boy listening as she continued and accepted the answers of those who had suggested they comnine the characteristics of both single digit numbers, writing it down as well as taking note of the two sch characteristics for 4 and 7.
Ugg...now to partner.
Gideon looked around sheepishly and spotted the one familiar face...Kurumi and was about to ask her when she appeared to find a partner of her own. s much for that idea. His gaze continued to move until he spotted another girl looking for a partner, registering the fact that he always seemed to be partnered up randomly with the female population and shruged it off approaching her.
"I can be ye partner," he offered with a polite small smile.

"Yes, I want!" Janice said.
"I'm Janice, second year."
Lots of ideas especially with three minds. Erin looked at the number 080. These are three numbers. Meanings? "080 could be..." she couldn't really knit together those words. "Well, 52 could mean freedom in relationships. Not really sure."

"Prof. Hadley said that we should look at the combination of the numbers together. What do you think that they would be?"
A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.
When Daichi had thought in the beginning of the lesson that Aritmancy this year would be a piece of cake, he was wrong. He sat in the middle of the class, listening as they talked about something...and then they were calculating..somethings.
But eventhough he couldn't always get what they were talking about, his hand was still feverishly writing on a piece of parchment. Maybe it would come in handy later? And when the Professor explained what the numbers meant he did have a feeling of understanding. He stopped writing as she announced to pair up. His eyes darted to look at the class and saw a hufflepuff asking for a partner. He got up but as he walked towards her another student had already partnered up with her. Daichi's cheeks flushed with embarrassment and he sat back down on his chair. "Anyone want to be my partner?" he asked the class as he looked around hopefully.

Kurumi smiled and nodded her head. "Nice to meet you." Although, the circumstances certainly were a bit odd. Actually, she had met Jenny under the same circumstances. There had even been a crazy maze involved, so Arithmancy had been rather good to Kurumi in meeting people. In fact, Arithmancy is where...
Kurumi stopped. She really shouldn't be thinking about that right now...especially when they were in the back of the room.
Kurumi looked at her parchment and leaned her elbows on the table before adding some note to it.

"Looking at 19 it would seem like the meanings are opposite, with beginning and ending," Kurumi said as she patted her lips with her index finger. "But, my father is always telling me that endings are like a new beginning. It means that you can begin again because another chapter has ended, so really they go hand and hand. Perhaps, 19 is indicating a transition from one part in your life to another. A turning point...makes even more sense if you consider its numerical order." After all, it was the last -teen number before twenties. "Taking the other meanings into consideration, the stage in your life that you are leaving has been one where you have been practicing an art or studying a particular subject and focusing on that. From now, it is time to take those things and apply them into a leadership position. Really take control of your life instead of hanging back..."

Partner up? Well, boo. It wasn't that Adanna didn't like to work with people - she did! - she just had a hard time finding a partner, usually. It'd probably be even harder in this school, a school that her Muggle friend Stacia, who was her partner in classes they had together, did not attend. She looked around the room in hopes of spotting someone who hadn't yet found a partner. Oh!

"28 seems to have complete opposites, well I suppose that number 2 and 8's qualities aren't that opposite but I know people who go to each of the extremes- either want the material success and neglect the relationships in their lives and the opposite is also true. So maybe the combination of the two means finding a suitable balance that can coexist together in peace."
Jesifur looked around and offered aloud, "Does anyone need another person? Partner? Group?"
Hoping someone would take her up on it she wenat about jotting down the numbers the professor gave.

Seeing as her and the Ravenclaw were in agreement, Kurumi made slight adjustments to their parchment before listening to what she had to offer about the next two.
Kurumi nodded. "I think it might also be implying that you should not take either for granted. Also, the mention of duality is interesting. It could be connected to the relation between mind and matter and when the properties of 8 are linked to it could imply that the only way for self mastery of our own duality is through harmony with others." She looked back at Aurora. "Good thinking." And time to add some more notes.

Possible meaning: 1 and 9 indicate the bookends of a stage of life, therefore their combined meanings represent a transition from one part in your life to another and a turning point in one's leadership. The things learned from the the stage in your life you are exiting (as indicated by the qualities of number one) are not to be applied on a broader scale and ideas should be shared. 28
Possible meaning: Living life in extremes will never lead to success and only true success can be found in the harmony and balance with others. Only through finding a balance in life will you find peace and control over your relationship with mind and matter. 37
Having added to her notes, Kurumi leaned back in her seat a bit and read over the descriptions of 3 and 7. House elf magic? That was...interesting that it was mentioned, especially considering what had been going on recently and Kurumi's mind locked in on that. "Maybe...combined 37 implies individual evolution through experiencing the joy of life and producing your own form of magic." Yep, that last bit was taken from the house elves. "Witches and wizards always describe house elf magic as being 'their own kind' of magic. While there are laws regarding what we can or cannot do in regards to spells, I don't think it means making up your own spells. Rather, really putting yourself into what you are doing, who you are, and making it your own." She cocked her head to the side. "That...really doesn't make much sense, does it...?"

Looking around, she finally spotted a girl around her age that was looking for a partner, so she approached her with a smile on her face. "Hello. I'll be your partner," she finished with a grin.

Penny was slightly disappointed she had gotten the answer wrong.... Vowing to do better this time...
Alyssa found herself lagging behind again. She hated playing catch up. The class was responding faster than she could think and even though she knew the answers, by the time she thought of raising her hand, the Professor had moved on. Sigh! At the rate she was going she was never going to earn any points in this class. But she was going to try! She quickly jotted down the characteristics of each number in her journal.
Then she thought about the combination of 4 and 7, and what 47 would represent.
Staring at the numbers, a thought suddenly dawned on Alyssa. 4+7=11. What were the odds of the Professor coming up with the number 47. High? But still the significance, at least to Alyssa was mind boggling. 11 was the month she was born in. 7 was the day!! She suddenly knew what the characteristics of the numbers 47 would be because she had struggled with it all her life.
Raising her hand, Alyssa said, "Professor, in order for us to understand the characteristics of 47, I think that we need to further breakdown the numbers. 4+7=11. 11 is considered to be a master number because it posseses more potential than the other numbers and is believed to be the most intuitive of all numbers. There is always a constant battle between it's characteristics because they are highly charged and hard to control. We have charisma, leadership and inspiration, together with dynamism and inner conflict. All these are good characteristics but if there isn't a goal to focus on, these characteristics can turn in themselves and cause phobias and fears.
So if we were to combine 11 with a 4 and a 7, we would have that battle of greatness vs self destruction, going on with down to practical down to earth 4, and spiritual 7. However, if we can find a way to balance out all three numbers' characteristics, 47 will possess amazing characteristics."
Alyssa hoped that her answer was correct. She sure as heck knew that she had a lot of 11 and an equal number of 7 inside her. No wonder she was unpredictable and weird sometimes.
Penny looked over to Alyssa and had a thought.."Alyssa you want to partner up for this task?....I've already started, but I could be totally wrong again", she finished with a wry smile.
