Arithmancy One: Introduction to Spell Numerization & Basic Curse-Breaking
The room was breezy, which wouldn't have been terribly strange for the November day except that the windows closed. Having just finished rearranging the desks for about the fifth time that morning, Professor Hadley settled on having the desks pushed together in pairs.
Resting her backside against her own desk, she was flipping through the latest copy of Numbers and You as she waited the arrival of the students.
ooc: please take your seats and keep chatting to a minimum. Lesson will begin as soon as enough of you have posted arriving <3 Lesson has started. Any late arrival posts WILL be subjected to points loss, so please, pretend as though your character has been there the whole time. Oh and the same goes for editing your post; I'd rather have you DOUBLE post (and I'd merge it) then have you edit your posts. Editing posts is also subjected to points loss.... Unless of course you WANT to lose points ;D
"The order of operations is crucial to many of the numbers you'll calculate in your Arithmancy studies..." Hadley began, pausing for a bit. "Which is why, I want to make sure you remember them. Using a mnemonic. As August here mentioned, the order of operations can be summed up using the mnemonic, PEMDAS. Which stands for, Parenthesis, Exponents, Multiplication & Division, Addition & Subtraction. The classic muggle phrase for this, which some of you might be familiar with is 'Please excuse my dear Aunt Sally.'" Hadley frowned slightly.
"I don't know about you, but I don't have an Aunt Sally. So what I want you to do is create your own phrase. Wizardfy it. Make it personal to you. Something that you can remember when we get to calculating numbers."
Selina went to work creating an idom for Parenthesis, exponents, multiplication and division, addition and subtraction. She drew and the parchment and started to write:
Quote:
Penguins exceed my deepest aspirations, soup. Pardon Ella, my darling, annoying sister. Please, Emma, my dog, ain't sick!
Puppies even make dog adults someday...
PEMDAS? Why on earth would they care about an aunt Sally? Or excuse her? If she'd done something wrong, it was up to her to figure it out! Presley put her quill to her parchment though, and worked on the assignment.
SPOILER!!: Presley's Paper
Pardon, Excuse me, dad? August sales?
Paper engineers mnemonics don't all say
Perhaps everyone moving does add something.
People end more dances and sonnets.
The more Presley tried to some up with something that made any kind of sense, the more she began to like the idea of pretending she had an aunt Sally. Most of hers were a nonsensical string of words, that all started with the correct letter. She sighed. She could simply remember "Parentheses, exponents, multiplication, division, addition, subtraction" couldn't she?
Kennedy tapped his pencil on his chin, thoughtfully. He had no idea of how to compose this. Words weren't that fun...sometimes. PEMDAS, he thought, what words fit that.
Pretty

May
Dangle

....
That sounded about right. So, Kennedy raised his hand and said, "Pretty Enemies May Dangle At Sunrise." Although, he didn't have any pretty enemies, yet.
"Pretend Everyone May Dance At Sunset," Angelina thougt to her self. She thought it was so bad, but it was the only thing she could may up off the top of her head! Plus it might not make since! Angelina raised her hand and said, "Professor is Preten Everyone May Dance At Sunset is one," Angelina asked, and then she said, "I don't think its to good..." She then gave a ocnfused look and looked around the room at everyone.

Harvey smacked his head as hard as could.
"Sir I would like to change my suggestion to Please Excuse Dumbest Me And i'm Stupid."
Harvey just froze reliving the dumbest mistake he had just done. He wanted to run out of the lesson but he didnt want to risk losing the points he had gained so he stayed where he was silent as a doormouse.
With a blank expression on his face only listening to what others were saying.

ooc: create your own phrase for the mnemonic, PEDMAS. Be creative. Have fun with it. Jess is going to sleep, to allow others in different timezones to partake in the lesson, so you have probably about 8-9 hours to work on this, before we progress . . . =)

PEMDAS! Yes, Vashti remembered it quite well from Muggle school, and she would've raised her hand to answer, but many of the other students were far quicker than she was, and then Professor Hadley was moving on. Ah, well.
That phrase was something she remembered too, though she didn't have an Aunt Sally either. She did have an Aunt Grace though, and she always wished she could've made the saying "Please excuse my devious 'dear' Aunt Grace." Unfortunately, subtraction didn't start with a "G," so she could never actually use it.
She was supposed to make up her own phrase to remember it by though? This ought to be interesting.
Picking up her quill and dipping it into her ink bottle, Vashti starting jotting down whatever came to mind.

"I wouldn't say skilled, so much as cowardly," Fina mused. "But it works like you said it." So it was good.

Ok, so it was a tad silly. But it was easy enough for Adanna to remember, and she should make this class as easy as possible, right?.
Oh. Her badgers were so silly when it came to these things. Silly in a good way, of course. "Alright, that's it. Head outside at Sunset so we can see some Purple-eared monsters!" Hadley teased. Of course she was joking; wasn't she?

"Puffs, meaning Hufflepuffs, Eat My Disgusting Aunt's Soup," Tori read proudly. "I'll be sure to remember that one, professor!" Heh.
Hadley frowned as she heard the next mnemonic. She couldn't decide if the girl had been making fun of Hufflepuffs or not, but something in her tone... said she had been.
"If you remember it, it works, but you should know that just because something might be disgusting to you, it might be delicious to someone else." AKA. It didn't HAVE to mean that Puffs ate anything or whatever the girl had been implying by that.

Kurumi hunched down in her seat a bit and promised herself that she wouldn't answer the next question no matter how tempted she was.
Then...she heard Treyen's voice...coming from the back of the room and her suspicions from earlier were only confirmed. She sunk even lower in her seat.
Kurumi smiled as August was able to make his mark. She knew how the boy had been so nervous, growing up muggle-born and not knowing anything about magic. She was glad to hear the tone of confidence in his voice.
And then they were given the task of coming up with their own personal spin on how to remember the Order of Operations. Kurumi pulled out a piece of parchment from under her textbook and began to scribble her name and other things on it. After a few minutes she found herself with two options for remembering it that were rather fitting, one perhaps a bit more than the other, and half a piece of parchment with words scratched out here and there.
"I can't decide between Parasols Expand Momentarily During Augurey’s Songs and Pinching East Makes Dough Astonishingly Sweeter," Kurumi said before resting her chin in the palm of her right hand.
Both were quite personal and easy to remember for her. Only problem is that she was revealing one of her baking secrets, but only during a full moon. Other days you needed to pinch south.
Hearing what almost sounded to be a tongue twister at first, Fina looked over toward the fourth year next. "The second one sounds less like a tongue twister." Just her suggestion. Maybe. Though both were creatively wonderful.

Hadley really wanted to say something along the lines of 'what about the half-bloods' but fought against it. Seriously, what was with people needing to point out blood status? Like it mattered?
"Good except for the extra word. As long as you don't get confused with it there, then I suppose it's alright..." Yup.

"Patronuses eat...mild...dumplings...above sushi." Jenny answered meekly. Okay, maybe that was not the best she could come up with, but at least it had sushi in it. But it didn't even make sense at all anyway.

Potions explode mainly during accelerated study?
That didn't sound all that terrible, but she was sure she could think of something else she would remember easily. Jotting it down in her notes anyway, she kept thinking about another example. It had to be relate to something she liked or maybe even something knew about.
Raising her hand again, she smiled. "Prefect explore many dungeons at sunset?" Okay, that was just funny to her and she would probably so remember that one.
"Do they?" Fina asked, upon hearing the next ... question? Her eyes automatically seemed to flicker over toward Treyen and then Kurumi, before back to the Ravenclaw. Apparently lots of things happened at sunset that she was blissfully ignorant over. "Well... That's .. nice." Yup. Hehe.

Parenthesis could be Portkeys. Exponents would be Enforce. The 'm' in multiplication would stand for Magic. And division is Doers. Addition could be Arriving. Subtraction is for Soon.
The hand was in the air quickly, "Portkeys Enforce Magic Doers Arriving Soon." BEAM. "Like they make us come earlier in order to take them." She was so happy with her own phrase to shut up about the explanation.

Okay. Did Ellie Stone seriously just ask that?
"The exponents you don't really have to worry about for Arithmancy sake. But the parentheses you do. Sometimes, parts of an equation are in parentheses," Hadley explained, as patiently as she could. "So when parts are in parentheses, that component of the equation, you solve first."

So she quickly wrote down in the notebook what PEMDAS stood for:
P- Parenthesis, E-Exponents, M-Multiplication, D-Division, A-Addition and S-Substraction. Alyssa looked at the meanings and suddenly it dawned on her, this was just like the Muggle Math version of BODMAS which was Brackets, Order of Operation, Division, Multiplication, Addition, Subtraction. At least now PEMDAS was looking familiar. But she laid thought aside for awhile. She needed to come up with a phrase for PEMDAS.
Alyssa thought for awhile and wrote down the possibilities in her notebook, scratching out those that were ridiculous or didn't make sense. When she finally came up which she was happy with, Alyssa smiled, raised her hand and said:
PEMDAS: P - Pearl E - Eats M - Macaroni D - Dogs (as in Hot Dogs) A - And S - Sandwiches

Harvey just froze reliving the dumbest mistake he had just done. He wanted to run out of the lesson but he didnt want to risk losing the points he had gained so he stayed where he was silent as a doormouse.
With a blank expression on his face only listening to what others were saying.
"Your first phrase actually worked better, since it didn't include an extra word..." Hadley said, slightly befuddled by the change in heart. Even if it did embarrass the person it was talking about, sometimes that was better. Helped one remember.
"Oh and I'm not a SIR. Five points from Ravenclaw."

Not the best... but it was something.
Another one that had Fina glancing toward the couple of prefects in her lesson. "That works."

"Not bad," Josephina remarked of the girl and her 'Mad Dog' mnemonic. "If you'd like a more magical creature, perhaps using Dugbog or Doxy would work too." Just a suggestion.
"I wouldn't say skilled, so much as cowardly," Fina mused. "But it works like you said it." So it was good.
Josephina really tried hard to refrain from rolling her eyes. Just because she never bothered to understand that whole blood purity thing, didn't mean there weren't others who were still sensitive over it. Dash probably understood it.
"If you can remember that..." It worked.
Oh. Her badgers were so silly when it came to these things. Silly in a good way, of course. "Alright, that's it. Head outside at Sunset so we can see some Purple-eared monsters!" Hadley teased. Of course she was joking; wasn't she?
Hadley frowned as she heard the next mnemonic. She couldn't decide if the girl had been making fun of Hufflepuffs or not, but something in her tone... said she had been.
"If you remember it, it works, but you should know that just because something might be disgusting to you, it might be delicious to someone else." AKA. It didn't HAVE to mean that Puffs ate anything or whatever the girl had been implying by that.
Sushi? That was something the house elves NEVER seemed to make. "Very ... ridiculously silly, but cute. I like it."
"Do they?" Fina asked, upon hearing the next ... question? Her eyes automatically seemed to flicker over toward Treyen and then Kurumi, before back to the Ravenclaw. Apparently lots of things happened at sunset that she was blissfully ignorant over. "Well... That's .. nice." Yup. Hehe.
"Oooh! I like that one!" Hadley called over, giving a brief grin to the young Gryffindor. Except that was when she realized something. "Except ... what about the S? It's PEDMAS. Perhaps add 'Superbly' to the end?" That ought to work.
"Professor Lafay would approve, I'm sure," Hadley nodded of the young snake.
Peeking over at a young Ravenclaw's parchment, Hadley wondered who Polly was, but as the latter sounded personal, she wasn't gonna make too big of a deal about it. "Very nice."
"As long as you know the extra word isn't a part of the actual order of operations, then it's good." Hadley told another student. Apparently six-word sentences weren't long enough.
"That sounds disgusting," Hadley said, making a face at the eating dragon muck. No one should have to do that. "But yes, it would work." Hehe.
"If you remember it, then yes, it's good... but gosh, I surely hope people don't really eat spiders or dragons or monsters." Ew.
"They must be pretty good devices if they're already sold," Hadley commented, teasingly. "Very good though." It worked and no extra words.
"Well peanuts are a good source of protein..." Hadley answered. "But you're missing the 'A'. I suppose you could add in 'amazing' though..."
"Simple, but it works." Fina confirmed, except curiosity got the better nature of her tongue as she spoke her next thoughts out loud, "Wonder what eating magical dandelions will do?"
"Oh. That sounds wonderful! I like that one and I do agree with that!" In most cases, she was pretty sure the professors at Hogwarts were very passionate about the subject they taught. At least the female ones seemed to be.
"Good, except ... remember that something disgusting to one person, might be yummy to another. But it works." Hadley told the young Puff. She liked Amethyst already.
"Just as long as you remember that those 'ands' aren't a part of PEMDAS, then you're good." Hadley told another student who was trying to sneak extra words in there. Muggle Studies. Sniffle. That made her miss Jeremy.
"Very good," Hadley nodded approvingly, at the young Ravenclaw.
Hearing the next one, Hadley smiled again in amusement. Some of these kids were just so creative with words. "Good, good."
Until seeing Evelyn's phrase, she had momentarily forgot how many common interests she shared with Evelyn. The girl reminded her a bit of herself when she was in school; minus the quidditch and the Slytherin crest on the robes. "Oh. I would love to do that." She sighed quietly.
'
"That works," Hadley nodded as she passed by a young Hufflepuffs desk.
"Very true too! Considering where our common room is located!" Fina quipped at the fourth year puff.
Make sense?
Why did Ellie seem so dumbfounded right now and they weren't even dealing with numbers yet? It was simply words? Strange girl.
"Oh. That one is another very good one!" Good in that it was true, in Fina's mind at least.
"Oh merlin. I sure hope you're not REALLY doing such," Fina said, shaking her head at the second year. Because otherwise she was going to have to have another pep talk with her Hufflepuffs. Of course she might need to do that soon anyway....
"Not bad..." Hadley replied at the next phrase. "Not bad at all."
Aw. This Puff seemed to be trying SO HARD and Fina was sure of it! Beaming at her as she stated her own phrase, she nodded in approval. "Very cute." Not magical, but it sounded somewhat personal, which was good.
"Aw. I like that one!" Of course she would; being the proud owner of her own puppy who was growing up. Heh.
Glancing over at the Ravenclaw's parchment, Fina frowned at how she seemed to be struggling to come up with something she was satisfied with. "You'll think of something. I'm sure. Though those all work for now."
Taking a break from the sunsets? "That sounds ... eerie. But it works." It did. It really did.
Sunrise, Sunset... Sunrise, sunset... Swiftly fly the years All this talk of sunrises and sunsets had Fina reminiscing on ANCIENT tunes. "That works, yes. And it doesn't matter how good it is, really, as long as you can remember it." Just saying.

Marilyn had always had a special interest in numbers. She couldn't understand why, really. Potions was obviously her subject of choice. So, it surprised her.
The blonde flipped through her text, looking for Chapter Three.
Deciding on the number 7, she raised her hand, "Professor, I chose the number 7 (seven). The characteristics are Analysis, research, solitude, wisdom, spiritual focus, investigative, and mystical."

I'm Professor Hadley!" In case they didn't know.
"Today's lesson will be divided in two main parts. The first, some of you might find to be slightly boring or tedious, but it never hurts to refresh ones memory on certain aspects. So just bear with me and your classmates who are new to the subject." She paused. "So new Arithmancy students, who can tell me what is numerology? And older students, please, if you will, clarify the difference between the terms Arithmancy and Numerology? How do these terms relate and intertwine with one another?"
Elise squirmed akwardly in her seat. Arithmancy was confusing already!
"Err... I beilieve it's a connection between numbers aspects of life. It used to be considered a branch of mathematics, but I don't think it is now." she said.
Then, she lowered her hand, an odd feeling that she'd just said something wrong. Nevermind...
She then raised her hand for the next question. "The order of operations would be PEMDAS. Parenthesis, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition and Subtraction."

Something that you can remember when we get to calculating numbers."
ooc: create your own phrase for the mnemonic, PEDMAS. Be creative. Have fun with it. Jess is going to sleep, to allow others in different timezones to partake in the lesson, so you have probably about 8-9 hours to work on this, before we progress . . . =)

Jez had been rather quiet during the lesson, which was weird since she enjoyed Arithmancy. Her brother Keegan had taught her a bit about it before, and she was fairly confident about it. So she raised her hand for this question. "The number 7 represents solidarity, mystery, wisdom or intelligence, and spiritual focus. 7 is also believed to be the most powerfully magical number." Jez suddenly thought of something that made her wince. She had 6 siblings, so that meant that, including herself, there were 7 children in her family. Given her parents' obsession with magical heritage, et cetera, she didn't think this number was an accident.

"The characteristics of the number three are positivism, playfulness, imagination and creative expression." She picked it because of her birthday. March 3rd.Teeheehee...
Ashley set aside his notes to look through the book for the proper chapter. As he read through, some of the other numbers were already being mentioned, so he decided to go with the first one on the list. Did zero count as a number between zero and nine? Or did the professor actually mean numbers one through eight?
He figured it wouldn't hurt to try, raising his hand. "I didn't know if you meant to include zero and nine... so I picked zero, which is Emptiness, change, decay, nothing."

"Yours what?" Hadley frowned. "We're not discussing numbers and relating them to YOU." Honestly. Slytherins. Were they so conceited that they thought EVERYTHING was about them? "Generic numbers. And their characteristics."
Flicking her wand, the list from their book with the numbers appeared on the board with a few additions
"Ultimately this list contains the essential characteristics of each of the numbers zero through nine. As such, what might this indicate for a combination of numbers such as 47?" Fina asked. Nice random, two digit number.

Jenny pondered for a while before quickly raising her hand. Wow, that was a good question.
"Um..." Jenny paused a bit before continuing. "with a number such as 47, there will be a combination of qualities from the numbers 4 and 7?" And she paused again. "Like 47 could represent hard work and wisdom at the same time...or it could represent endurance and spiritual focus."
It sounded so simple, yet why was Jenny thinking it could be wrong?
