Arithmancy One: Introduction to Spell Numerization & Basic Curse-Breaking
The room was breezy, which wouldn't have been terribly strange for the November day except that the windows closed. Having just finished rearranging the desks for about the fifth time that morning, Professor Hadley settled on having the desks pushed together in pairs.
Resting her backside against her own desk, she was flipping through the latest copy of Numbers and You as she waited the arrival of the students.
ooc: please take your seats and keep chatting to a minimum. Lesson will begin as soon as enough of you have posted arriving <3 Lesson has started. Any late arrival posts WILL be subjected to points loss, so please, pretend as though your character has been there the whole time. Oh and the same goes for editing your post; I'd rather have you DOUBLE post (and I'd merge it) then have you edit your posts. Editing posts is also subjected to points loss.... Unless of course you WANT to lose points ;D

Oooh...PEMDAS. Something Jenny heard about back in her Muggle elementary school. She never quite got the concept of it though...except for the MDAS part.
And they get to create their own phrase for it? Cool! Already Jenny thought of something for the last letter. Quickly, Jenny raised her hand.
"Patronuses eat...mild...dumplings...above sushi." Jenny answered meekly. Okay, maybe that was not the best she could come up with, but at least it had sushi in it. But it didn't even make sense at all anyway.

Flipping to a fresh page in her journal, Mina wrote down everything as it was said. It never hurt to have more notes, she did have her NEWT's to think about and she was pretty sure that everything she could get would help her in some way.
Tapping her quill as she thought, she listened to what was being said. PEMDAS Seriously, there had to be something she could think of. She didn't have an Aunt Sally that she knew about, but anything was possible. Biting her lip in deep thought, she raked her brain.
Potions explode mainly during accelerated study?
That didn't sound all that terrible, but she was sure she could think of something else she would remember easily. Jotting it down in her notes anyway, she kept thinking about another example. It had to be relate to something she liked or maybe even something knew about.
Raising her hand again, she smiled. "Prefect explore many dungeons at sunset?" Okay, that was just funny to her and she would probably so remember that one.
Josephina nodded in concurrence as a few students knew what the order of operations meant! "Precisely! The order in which you're to complete mathematical problems. Believe it or not, while exponents aren't really used much in Arithmancy, following the order of operations for the other operations is still important." They will see that later on in the term though.
"Almost. Except you've got one of your operations wrong. The E is for Exponents." Not that they really used exponents in Arithmancy, but you know, for accuracy and all. Division and Multiplication were rather interchangeable, so Fina wasn't terribly fussed over that.
"Yes." Though her operations she mentioned weren't precisely the easiest way to remember them, the way she said them.
Now here was a kid that clearly knew his muggle mathematics! "Exactly as I'd want you to remember the order too. PEMDAS!"
***
"The order of operations is crucial to many of the numbers you'll calculate in your Arithmancy studies..." Hadley began, pausing for a bit. "Which is why, I want to make sure you remember them. Using a mnemonic. As August here mentioned, the order of operations can be summed up using the mnemonic, PEMDAS. Which stands for, Parenthesis, Exponents, Multiplication & Division, Addition & Subtraction. The classic muggle phrase for this, which some of you might be familiar with is 'Please excuse my dear Aunt Sally.'" Hadley frowned slightly.
"I don't know about you, but I don't have an Aunt Sally. So what I want you to do is create your own phrase. Wizardfy it. Make it personal to you. Something that you can remember when we get to calculating numbers."
ooc: create your own phrase for the mnemonic, PEDMAS. Be creative. Have fun with it. Jess is going to sleep, to allow others in different timezones to partake in the lesson, so you have probably about 8-9 hours to work on this, before we progress . . . =)
William raised his hand. He had to come up eith a saying with the letters Pedma. " Practically Envision Doing Magic Always" Willim told the professor. This is William's mnemonic.

This was fun. Really. Creating your own PEDMAS and wizardfying it. AWESOME!
Jonathan searched for words, random words that he could think of. Really. As soon as he thought of those words, he raised his hand to answer "Potions Exercises My Diligence Attention on Studying!!!" he smiled. Well, he slightly laughed at what he just said. Did it make sense at all or did it not?

Arithmancy class. At first, Raven didn't have any interested with this lesson, but.. She decided to join it. She already sat at the classroom, listened to the professor. And.. PEDMAS? Make a phrase with PEDMAS?? She thought an unique phrase.
"PEDMAS... PEDMAS.. How about Potions of Evil Make Dragon Acts Stupid?? " She laughed when she heard her own statement.

Minerva was never good at math in muggle school so she was extra scared of it here. So she hadn't answered questions yet just took many notes. She thought for a second PEDMAS.. hmmm what could she say. Minerva put her hand up. "Would, Pandas Eat Dragon Muck At Sunset work?" She knew she uses a pandas, did wizards know what pandas were.. hmm
Ashley listened, taking notes as best as he can, since he had no idea what most of this stuff was. Upon being instructed to try and come up with a mnemonic, he continued writing, trying out a couple before raising his hand to share, since everyone else was doing so, "People Eat Monsters, Dragons And Spiders!"
Of course, that didn't make sense, but it did have eating, monsters, dragons and spiders in it, all things he was pretty fond of. And he didn't have a problem with people, either, so that was cool. So he'd most likely remember it well. And wasn't that the point?

Oh, no.
It was like professor Hadley was talking in... some creepy, unknown language.
Mnemonics? Eeeeep.
Hearing some other PEMDAS's, Nora raised her hand to suggest hers. "Pink entertaining muggle devices are..." uhm... "sold?" She lowered her hand quickly, feeling the blood rush through her cheeks.
Jesifur thought about it she wanted something punchy and unique. P.E.M.D.A.S. hmmm
Poachers Eat Many Disgusting Animal Sacks? no that's gross. Peanuts Energize Most Diligent A Sorcerer? I guess that's better thaan the first.
Jesifur raised her hand, "Professor how about, Peanuts Energize Most Diligent Sorcerers?"
Magical Maths?! Really, just when she thought she will never here the word maths again in her live it came back. Great. Well, she decided to take this lesson so she should try and live with maths part.
Okay... PEMDAS... What?!
A random phrase popped up in her mind, even though it doesn't make any sense, she decide to say it. "Please eat magical dandelions at six?" she suggested raising her arm to the level of her eyes. It was a really stupid sentence... but it was better than nothing.

She was not into Math but she was into Arithmancy. What's the difference ? The spelling. But seriously, Beatrice wants to overcome her hate for numbers that was why she was here. And it turned out not to be so bad after all.
Now, PEMDAS.

Amethyst raised her hand after chuckling softly at the Professor's comment. Did she have an Aunt Sally? No. Not Ame. "Professor, how about 'Pickled Eggs Make Disgusting Appetizer Samples'?" She blushed hoping that would be alright.

Penny listened intently to the Professor, and thought about the question...
Putting her hand in the air she piped in her opinion on the matter.."Professor, Arithmancy is all about the magical properties of numbers and what they mean to each person - because it uses important dates to that person, and indicates when important events will happen"......
Penny took a breath and continued "I think Numerology is the study of numbers and mesurements as they relate to ones everyday life - but isn't Numerology a muggle thing?"

"When studying any number for Arithmancy, it is important to keep certain things in mind. What do I mean by the Order of Operations?" Hadley posed as the next question. To all students, of course.
Penny remembered something about this in her muggle maths class.. she searched her memory for anything that could or would be helpful..
Putting her hand in the air, she ventured a guess "Professor I remember something about Parenthesis, multiplication, dividing and subtraction and addition" ...Penny drew a blank on the rest though..

Penny nodded at her own forgetfulness, "PEMDAS...yes of course", she silently scolded herself...
Wizardfy PEMDAS?....
Parenthesis..........Penny
Exponents............Enjoys
Multiplication........Muggle Studies and
Division................Divination and
Addition...............Arithmancy
Subtraction..........Seriously
Penny knew that she would remember that for sure - because it was all her favourite subjects....
"I don't know about you, but I don't have an Aunt Sally. So what I want you to do is create your own phrase. Wizardfy it. Make it personal to you. Something that you can remember when we get to calculating numbers."[/COLOR]
Wizardfy it? Louisa suppressed a chuckle at the word - she liked made-up words! And this Professor was so smart to come up with this one! (Besides the fact that she actually likes Arithmancy). Staring thoughtfully, squinting her eyes at the professor absently, Louisa's mind drifted away.
Parenthesis could be Portkeys. Exponents would be Enforce. The 'm' in multiplication would stand for Magic. And division is Doers. Addition could be Arriving. Subtraction is for Soon.
The hand was in the air quickly, "Portkeys Enforce Magic Doers Arriving Soon." BEAM. "Like they make us come earlier in order to take them." She was so happy with her own phrase to shut up about the explanation.
Ariella clapped her hands together, extremely excited. She loved when the professors assigned creative assignments to do in class. It made the classes so much more interesting.
She thought for a while of a good mnemonic. Pygmy Puffs Eat Muffins Dancing And Singing
Well that one seemed okay. But she wasn't sure what muffins had to do with her interests. But it fit and she had already memorized it. She wrote it down onto her parchment, hoping that the professor would be okay with it.
Super Slytherin Buddy | | ⅓ She-Snake Trio | | a normal girl with normal knees
Lazily writing down what PEMDAS meant, making sure to really hold onto her quill this time, she wasn't all that excited about making up her own phrase for this. Although, the big D standing out in the little phrase already had her thinking about new ways to say this phrase. Darn you creative brain! She didn't want to think about new phrases.
Nevertheless, she started writing it down.
Photograph Extraordinarily Majestic Dragons Around Scotland
Right, so they had to create their own mnemonic device for the order of operations. pulling out a spare piece of parchment, the girl began thinking of words that could work. The first word that popped in her mind for "P" was "Puff", and no matter how much she though, she couldn't come up with another word for the letter. "D" what started with that. Writing down the first word that came to her, she shook her head and crossed it out. Sure badgers lived in the dirt, but she didn't think it would fit her phrase. After working a bit longer, she beamed as she looked down at her parchment. Sure there were many words crossed out, but her phrase was pretty awesome if she said so herself. Grinning, she raised her hand. "Professor Hadley, how about, 'Puffs Enjoy Many Delicious Aromatic Scents.'"

But in an effort to stay on topic, at least early on in the lesson, even if Ellie would have liked a diversion no doubt, Hadley moved on from the banter.
"Right. Now that we all have a better idea between the two subjects, we'll go over something that may be rudimentary to those who have studied muggle mathematics." Or have taken her class before.
"When studying any number for Arithmancy, it is important to keep certain things in mind. What do I mean by the Order of Operations?" Hadley posed as the next question. To all students, of course.
....Wait. Hadley didn't say anything. She was admitting defeat, wasn't she? Or, rather, avoiding admitting defeat by just not answering. Changing subjects. Crafty, Hadley, but Ellie knew better. And she smirked to herself.
Muggle mathematics? Okay... Actually, Ellie could see the relevance. Math was math to both Muggles and Wizards.
But Order of Operations? "Sounds bloody. I mean, aren't operations those things Muggles do when they cut themselves open?" Nasty, that. And now she was confused as to what that had to do with numbers. Or math.

Blink.
"But Hadley, what do parenthesis have to do with math?" As far as Ellie was concerned, parenthesis were those curvy lines used in writing. "And what are exothingamajiggers?" Way to speak a different language there, class. And why did she seem to be the only one confused about this? Honestly.
So...now they had to create a phrase like that? With those letters? PEDMAS, was it?
She was so utterly confused.
Time to blot out her parchment again?

Gideon remained quiet and simply listened to his classmates and the professor discuss the first two questions. It wasn't like anything he could come up with to answer would be any different or better so he didn't. The fourth year did however take notes on what was deemed correct, finally decided to participate at the task of creating a saying using the words and tried to work on it on his parchment.

Ok so it wasn't the greatest and Gideon made a face. However it worked to some extent and true at times so he'd settle until he could come up with something more.
Seeing as Arithmancy was one of her weaker subjects, Ness had remained rather so far and she ahd focused on listening to the class instead. Pedmas..Ness thought of a good phrase that would be good for pedmas.

Alyssa was getting discouraged. She was finding herself struggling in Professor Hadley's class. It wasn't because the Professor was a bad teacher, in fact, she was a good one because she simplified her explanations. It was Alyssa's fault. She was just bad at Math and from the sounds of it, Arithmancy sounded quite like Math. Alyssa disliked Math because she didn't have the patience for formulaes and theories. If she didn't know the answer right away, she didn't want to work to find it. But she knew that she had to try here. She couldn't let her House OR her House Mistress down.
So she quickly wrote down in the notebook what PEMDAS stood for:
P- Parenthesis, E-Exponents, M-Multiplication, D-Division, A-Addition and S-Substraction. Alyssa looked at the meanings and suddenly it dawned on her, this was just like the Muggle Math version of BODMAS which was Brackets, Order of Operation, Division, Multiplication, Addition, Subtraction. At least now PEMDAS was looking familiar. But she laid thought aside for awhile. She needed to come up with a phrase for PEMDAS.
Alyssa thought for awhile and wrote down the possibilities in her notebook, scratching out those that were ridiculous or didn't make sense. When she finally came up which she was happy with, Alyssa smiled, raised her hand and said:
PEMDAS: P - Pearl E - Eats M - Macaroni D - Dogs (as in Hot Dogs) A - And S - Sandwiches
