Arithmancy One: Introduction to Spell Numerization & Basic Curse-Breaking
The room was breezy, which wouldn't have been terribly strange for the November day except that the windows closed. Having just finished rearranging the desks for about the fifth time that morning, Professor Hadley settled on having the desks pushed together in pairs.
Resting her backside against her own desk, she was flipping through the latest copy of Numbers and You as she waited the arrival of the students.
ooc: please take your seats and keep chatting to a minimum. Lesson will begin as soon as enough of you have posted arriving <3 Lesson has started. Any late arrival posts WILL be subjected to points loss, so please, pretend as though your character has been there the whole time. Oh and the same goes for editing your post; I'd rather have you DOUBLE post (and I'd merge it) then have you edit your posts. Editing posts is also subjected to points loss.... Unless of course you WANT to lose points ;D
Nikolas with quill in hand wrote down some ideas of what numerology was. This simply reminded him about math...that tedious, boring class. Anyways, what was numerology, Nikolas?
He raised his hand. "Is the study of the symbolism of numbers" besides that it was the study of numbers. "And it's used to predict the personality of a person, strengths etc." How did he knew this? Simple. His mom used to teach Arithmancy and every once in a while he heard her talking about lots of stuff about the numbers and whatever they did.
"Both of them are forms of divination, and very similar in most ways." Eino began after raising his hand. "However, Arithmancy focuses on fortune telling by analyzing names and their numerical equivalents. It's used to identify a person's strengths and weaknesses. In Numerology, we study the numinous relationships between numbers and objects or beings. I suppose you could say Arithmancy is mostly related to the self, and Numerology to everything else, including our relationship to others."
Em had studied Arithmancy in previous years so she should know the difference between the two, but she wasnt positive about it. Raising her hand, she decided to give it a go anyways. "Arithmancy is mostly about divination. It requires one to use their given name in conjunction with maths and charts to find special numbers like the Hearts Desire." Yeah, she recalled learning about that last term." And arithmancy is like a subset of numerology right? and other parts of numerology have to deal with science and astrology."

Looking up from the edge of her magazine as students began filing in with their customary greetings of hello, Josephina would nod respectfully at them. "Hello... good morning," she would reply, dutifully. Only after some started asking her questions, did she set the magazine down beside her on her desk.
"Great summer. Thanks for asking!" Fina exclaimed, at the Slytherin boy. "Hope yours well rested." It was always good to see returning students again.
And there was another student approaching her desk with a bag and an apple. The smell of fresh cookies wafted up to her nostrils and for a moment, without looking at the student who brought them up, she was going to say 'Thank you, Kurumi'. But her thoughts went before her speech, thankfully, and she glanced over - surprised to see it be NOT Kurumi there but one of her house members.
Amethyst Geleto, was her name, if Fina recalled correctly. "Not trying to keep the professor away are you, Miss Geleto?" Fina mused, looking from the snacks to the student. Baisley was going to love the cookies. "Thank you though." She nodded appreciatively at the young girl.
And speaking of Kurumi! There she was! But ... no cookies? Perhaps the now fourth year had reserved her delectable baked goods for more special occasions, like feasts. Part of the lesson? What was? Oh. The breeze?
"Nah. I just thought a lovely breeze would do the mind well." Not to mention it was always good for her to keep up with her charm work.
Hey Hadley?! Half expecting to see her male prefect from the direction the voice had come from, minus the fact that it was a female's voice, Fina smiled in amusement at the informality of the new Ravenclaw Captain. Perhaps it was something with Eagle captains... informal behaviors?
"They have a magazine about everything, my dear." Hadley mused. How the girl ever got into Ravenclaw was beyond her, with the exception that the girl WAS smart, when she tried. Which was rare unless it was on the quidditch pitch, but it happened. "New research developments relating to Arithmancy. It's always good to brush up." Yea cause even after Hogwarts, the learning never stopped. Sorry to disappoint.

Once it seemed like there was a well enough turn out, Fina flicked her wand at the door and it gently closed. "I guess we'll just get started now. For those who have been in my classes before, welcome back! For those who this is your first Arithmancy lesson . . ." Hadley looked toward the younger students mostly now. "Welcome! I'm Professor Hadley!" In case they didn't know.
"Today's lesson will be divided in two main parts. The first, some of you might find to be slightly boring or tedious, but it never hurts to refresh ones memory on certain aspects. So just bear with me and your classmates who are new to the subject." She paused. "So new Arithmancy students, who can tell me what is numerology? And older students, please, if you will, clarify the difference between the terms Arithmancy and Numerology? How do these terms relate and intertwine with one another?"

William raised his hand. "Arthromancy id full o f methods to find out about your life" Wiliam told the professor. " Numerology use more numbers to tell you about your life" William said to the professor. " They relate and intertwine with each other as numbers are both ussed to find out about your life" William explained to the professor.

Amethyst smiled wide, seeing that her cookies will be loved by Professor Hadley. She was proud of them, but she was sure someone else could do better than she.
"No Mam'! Just showing my appreciation!" She giggled softly. She was going to love this class. She just knew it. "You are certainly Welcome, Madam!" She hurried off back to her seat.

Well, lets see. Herbology was the study of herbs and how they are used. So... Ame raised her hand up, not high, but not lower either. "Professor, is Numerology the study of numbers and their uses? And, now that I'm thinking about it more, can numerology be used to describe things that have to do with numbers, like the amount of sugar needed in a recipe for cake?" She didn't know what sparked this question, but it was something she wanted to know. She'd hoped that her question was clear.

Oh? A boring or tedious part? AND...those weren't the calculations she was talking about? Oh, Merlin. He was sitting at the back of the classroom for the first time ever, but still heard everything Hadley had said...
...which meant that he wasn't supposed to say what Numerology actually was, but the difference between that one and Arithmancy. He was clueless on the theory, though, but his hand was up in the air nonetheless.
"Well, Numerology refers only to the numbers and their meanings, while Arithmancy uses the numbers to describe one self or certain insights on a person's past, present, future, characteristics and such." Right? His hand was set on the table. He had nothing further to say.

When professor Hadley finally started speaking, Nora felt slightly... less sleepy, so she straightened her back. With a glance at her empty piece of parchment, her hand raised up in the air. "It is the study of numbers, and their possible influence in our lives."
... or not?
As for her second question, for the older students... ehh, she wasn't older, so she didn't answer to that one.
Adanna sat in silence. What is Numerology? Something to do with numbers, right? She'd always been so terrible with numbers. Words were her preference.
Wait. Words! Certain words had certain meanings, right? Raising her hand slowly, she took her best guess. "Well, Professor... 'ology' means 'the study of', and 'numer'... That'd be numbers, right? Like numerals. So, Numerology would be the study of numbers?"

Alyssa figured that even though she was a second year, and she was taking Arithmancy for the first time in Hogwarts, that she would answer the question that Professor Hadley had posed to those who were new. 'What is Numerology?'
Alyssa thought about it for a couple of minutes, wrote down her ideas and once she was sure that she had the answer, raised her hand and when acknowledged, answered, "Numerology is the study of the symbolism of numbers and what it represents, is used to determine a person’s personality, their strengths and talents, the obstacles they may face, and how they should deal with other people.

So arithmancy is the use of numerology in divination."
"The most rudimentary definition of both terms, yes, you're correct." Fina nodded, nevermind the fact that she was slightly disappointed that the girl didn't elaborate much further. Considering she was a Seventh year and all.

Sigh? Why the sigh? Listening to another seventh year had they multiplied over the summer or did she merely forget how many sixth years there were last year?, Fina nodded. "Yes. Good, numerology is like a subset of Arithmancy, one might say."

"Arithmancy is divination using numbers, learning about what has happened, is happening, and might hapen in our lives through analysis of numbers and calculations, while numerology is the study of the relationship between a number and our life more generally. Indirectly, they are the same thing, but more accurately, arithmancy is just, kind of, a more specific form of numerology. Numerology can be used in more ways than just divining the future because it can by used to connect numbers to just about anything. Numerical codes, for example, are more of an example of numerology than arithmancy," she said, raising her hand first for safety. Code-breaking was something her and Risa had dabbled in back in France, writing coded messages to each other and trying to decipher them .
About to say she was right, Fina tilted her head slightly, shaking her head. "Almost. Except I'm inclined to disagree on one aspect. Numerology is a part of Arithmancy, so wouldn't that make Arithmancy the broader, more generic topic?" Technically speaking.

Instead, her hand shot up in the air. She had been waiting all summer for Arithmancy and NOTHING this woman taught could ever seem boring or tedious. "The term Arithmancy comes from the Greek words 'arithmo' meaning 'number' and 'mancy' meaning 'prophecy.' As can be inferred by this alone, Arithmancy is therefore a system of fortune-telling based on names and numbers. In Arithmancy, each letter of the alphabet is assigned numberical value. Based on these values, the full ‘number’ of a person’s name can be calculated and this system is used to predict personality strengths and weaknesses." She smiled as she took a pause. Numbers, so straight forward. So telling. "Numerology, I believe, came after Arithmancy and is actually a form of it that focuses on numbers and their symbolism according to birth date. Also, and this may be a bit of a stretch, Numerology is any tradition or belief in a mystical relationship between numbers and physical objects or living things." She paused for a moment gathering her thoughts. "Professor, could you say that Arithmancy is constant all around the world, but perhaps Numerology could have variants in different countries that place different significant emphasis on different numbers?"
That last bit was a bit of a stab in the dark, but she remembered around her first term when they had had a discussion about the different meanings of numbers and what things each person associated with them.
Oh. Couldn't the now-fourth year have waited just a bit longer to speak? Fina would have been flabbergasted had anyone wanted to speak after her historical enlightenment of the two terms.
"I... that's much more depth than I was hoping for. Thank you."Know-it-all, she thought. Oh, but she asked a question? "I think that they're both fairly widely used. Though if I could say one thing differentiating the two sharply, it would be that Arithmancy is more commonly used and studied by the magical world. Numerology, while it is a part of Arithmancy, it is more common among the muggle world."
Her father, for instance, would be more likely to know both since his daughter was an Arithmancer Numerology.

Which made no sense to Louisa whatsoever. "Numerology, on the other hand, is more of a... spiritual connection between numbers and aspects of life. It was considered part of mathematics before but not anymore. It is regarded as pseudomathematics by modern scientists now."
"Precisely." Josephina nodded at the Ravenclaws very condense description of the two.

Having to hold onto her quill though so it didn't blow off of her desk from the breeze, Evelyn frowned and looked towards the windows, wondering if she could ask Hadley to close them. Yet they were already closed. What in the wooorrrld?
With the first question of the lesson though, Evelyn blinked and mentally shook her head, raising her hand to answer after a few others spoke up. Good Merlin, could Cookie Girl sound anymore like a book? "Arithmancy is the study of numbers, their own personal meanings that is, and how these numbers relate to or have influence on human life. The subject uses the Pythagorean number system, in which each letter of the alphabet is assigned a certain number, and by using this system and what each individual number means, we can pretty much lay out our lives from the past, present, and future, including our strengths and perhaps weaknesses we need to work on. It's like, almost a form of divination through numbers." Although that didn't mean it was always true! Goodness knows she didn't believe some of it.
"While numerology..." Nu-mer-ology. What...in the world...was that? "Well that's just what muggles study, isn't it? Pretty much the same as Arithmancy, but it's used everywhere." Everywheerrreeeee."I think muggles even use it to determine things about supposed aliens that live in space."
She blamed her thoughts on the muggle box.
Oh. Good of Evelyn to mention the muggle thing and numerology. "Yes. Pythagorean system, but I should mention now that there is another number system used in Arithmancy, though it's not nearly as common as the Pythagorean. The Chaldean Method." It was on her agenda to teach them that system at some point, but just not very important.

So much so that they have a class telling you that the different numbers actually mean something. They really should have just stopped at 1+1=2.
Ellie refrained from snorting as Hadley made the class introduction. Mostly because ALL Arithmancy was boring and tedious. Not just 'part' of it. Honestly, the Captain only came because she liked Hadley so much. She should be soooo appreciative.
And, as she talked about with Treyen, they could never do that to Hadley - quit the subject.
As for the difference between those two...whatever it was Hadley had said, Ellie had no clue. Best let the smarty pantses answer. Always the best policy.
Oh Ellie.
Josephina had to resist her comment about Quill magazines, considering there was one about them. It wasn't solely about quills, but it was there. She saw it on the shelf once. And the owner of Scribbulus probably was very interested in those updates.
But in an effort to stay on topic, at least early on in the lesson, even if Ellie would have liked a diversion no doubt, Hadley moved on from the banter.

"You could say that, yes. Though maybe not the relating to ones life part, as you'd be getting more into Arithmancy then." Hadley nodded. Just the study of numbers would do.

Yeah totally.
Like that Slytherin girl over there said. But what was with students thinking they had to add the part about the relating it to your life? That was Arithmancy, not numerology, if they did that.
And ... why was the girl's writing SO hard to see? Oh. Pink ink.
"Miss ... Bunbury, right?" Hadley said, almost reluctantly. "While I do appreciate the color of your ink," she really did. "writing your class notes in that color is not very appropriate and will make it very straining on your eyes later when you review them. Two points from Slytherin."

"Yes... you could say that. Numerology can be used to describe the numbers in baking." Not that she would know much about that. She used magic to cook and bake. Baking was not one of the talents she got from her mother, unfortunately.

"Right. Now that we all have a better idea between the two subjects, we'll go over something that may be rudimentary to those who have studied muggle mathematics." Or have taken her class before.
"When studying any number for Arithmancy, it is important to keep certain things in mind. What do I mean by the Order of Operations?" Hadley posed as the next question. To all students, of course.

About to say she was right, Fina tilted her head slightly, shaking her head. "Almost. Except I'm inclined to disagree on one aspect. Numerology is a part of Arithmancy, so wouldn't that make Arithmancy the broader, more generic topic?" Technically speaking.
"Precisely." Josephina nodded at the Ravenclaws very condense description of the two.
"Hand in hand, except Arithmancy can be related to you more." Odd considering numerology was considered the subset of Arithmancy.
"The first part is correct, but the second part is more Arithmancy, not numerology." Very good though and impressive.
"Good except Arithmancy... relates to others. Numerology is, most simply, the study of numbers." Muggle related, as the Head Girl had mentioned.
"Other way around dear." Hadley nodded. "Numerology is the subset, or part, of Arithmancy."
"Numerology doesn't really tell about your life. It tells about numbers." Why did she feel like a broken record? Oh. Cause some students seemed to have some misconceptions about the two terms.
Oh, another question. But this one had to do with baking? Perhaps Hogwarts ought to start a baking club; between Kurumi and Amethyst, they'd surely give the house elves a run for their money. Heh.
"Yes... you could say that. Numerology can be used to describe the numbers in baking." Not that she would know much about that. She used magic to cook and bake. Baking was not one of the talents she got from her mother, unfortunately.
When did Treyen Lockhart get so smart in Arithmancy? Perhaps seeing his OWL grade over the summer had given him a boost of confidence? Enough to make him want to sit near the back . . . Hmph!
"Yes. Very good." And she had nothing more to add.
"Study of numbers, yes. Not so much influence on our lives, as that would be Arithmancy." Hadley nodded at the young girl. Tee hee. Gray lines between the two.
"Love the separation of the word," Hadley complimented. "So yes, you are most correct in your definition." Of course that had already been said. Which means, time to move on.
"Right. Now that we all have a better idea between the two subjects, we'll go over something that may be rudimentary to those who have studied muggle mathematics." Or have taken her class before.

Right sooo...he should be writing this all down right? Auggie's quill moved across his parchment furiously as he tried to get the main idea expressed by the other younger, beginner students as well as the answers given by the older yeared students.
Now Professor Hadley was asking them about the Order of Operations and even mentioned people who knew Muggle Mathematics. He knew Muggle mathematics!! Raising his hand excitedly the Gryffindor spoke, "Professor! I know the order of operations. Well in Muggle math the steps are remembered by the anagram PEMDAS; Parenthesis, Exponents, Multiplications, Division, Addition, and Subraction."
He took a breath and continued. "Now this simply just shows the order in which you perform these actions on a problem or equation." he could only assume this was the same for Arithmancy.

Order of Operations...That is much to do about elementary math, right?
Marilyn thought she remembered this..."Isn't it P E D M A S?...It's used for Algebro, or something like that...Anyway, I believe it's used to determine what parts of the...err...math problem to solve first..."
"Parenthesis, Equation?, Division, Multiplication, Addition, and Subtraction..." Yea, she remembered this, now. They'd talked about this before.

Eino wrote down some notes as the Professor replied to the students, and then... Oh, great. Mathematics. Eino raised his hand. "It's the order in which you are... umm... supposed to solve a mathematics problem." Right? Did that even make sense? He sighed. Professor Hadley was the only reason he kept coming back to Arithmancy. It was so hard and he always sounded so... silly, but she was so nice, and helpful, how could he not take the class?

Amethyst smiled, having remembered learning about this from a friend of hers. Her hand went up, but for a second, she couldn't think of the proper wording. "Order of Operations is the order in which one is to complete a mathmatical problems?" She hoped that what her friend had told her, better yet, she hoped it was right.

Louisa was grabbing the edge of the desk very tightly as she listened to what her fellow students had to say about Arthimancy - some were very thorough that she lost them after the third hard term, others were as condense as she was, she liked those ones. Just sayin'.
When the professor asked again, she raised her hand slowly, "Umm.. it is the order in which you do a maths...problem." Was it a 'problem'? Louisa carried on, "Like you solve Parentheses first, power squares and roots follow that. Multiplication and Division after that and lastly Addition and Subtraction."

Josephina nodded in concurrence as a few students knew what the order of operations meant! "Precisely! The order in which you're to complete mathematical problems. Believe it or not, while exponents aren't really used much in Arithmancy, following the order of operations for the other operations is still important." They will see that later on in the term though.

"Almost. Except you've got one of your operations wrong. The E is for Exponents." Not that they really used exponents in Arithmancy, but you know, for accuracy and all. Division and Multiplication were rather interchangeable, so Fina wasn't terribly fussed over that.

"Yes." Though her operations she mentioned weren't precisely the easiest way to remember them, the way she said them.

Now here was a kid that clearly knew his muggle mathematics! "Exactly as I'd want you to remember the order too. PEMDAS!"

"The order of operations is crucial to many of the numbers you'll calculate in your Arithmancy studies..." Hadley began, pausing for a bit. "Which is why, I want to make sure you remember them. Using a mnemonic. As August here mentioned, the order of operations can be summed up using the mnemonic, PEMDAS. Which stands for, Parenthesis, Exponents, Multiplication & Division, Addition & Subtraction. The classic muggle phrase for this, which some of you might be familiar with is 'Please excuse my dear Aunt Sally.'" Hadley frowned slightly.
"I don't know about you, but I don't have an Aunt Sally. So what I want you to do is create your own phrase. Wizardfy it. Make it personal to you. Something that you can remember when we get to calculating numbers."
ooc: create your own phrase for the mnemonic, PEDMAS. Be creative. Have fun with it. Jess is going to sleep, to allow others in different timezones to partake in the lesson, so you have probably about 8-9 hours to work on this, before we progress . . . =)

Hmmm, Janice thought. PEMDAS. Put that Eerie Mad Dog Away Somewhere?? Please Exclaim Mom's and Dad's Astonishing Supper?? Pans Emmit More Dorky Ashy Stuff?? Janice can quickly form mnemonic devices, but most of them sounds weird and is literaly un-rememberable if it's for doing specific stuff.. So, eenie, meenie, miny,mo. She raised her hand and answered.
"How 'bout 'Put that Eerie Mad Dog Away Somewhere' ?? " A mad dog tried to strangle her cat before. Quite personal.
PEDMAS. Hmmm. Cael loved mnemonics; they were certainly the easiest way to remember trivial facts and whatnot while having fun at the same time. PEDMAS...
"How about People Evading Dark Magic Are Skilled!" he smiled, finally finding a way to tie the phrase to something relevant.

Reason: fixing code ^_^
Adanna sat for a few minutes, her brain moving at top speed to connect the letters to words. Harder than she thought it'd be! Pear-Eating Monkeys Don't... no. Pink Elephants... no! Hm... Oh!
Answer in mind, she waited for someone else to answer before her. Once someone had, she raised her hand high enough to be seen. "Purple-Eared Monsters Dance At Sunset!" she answered, with a small laugh behind her words.
Ok, so it was a tad silly. But it was easy enough for Adanna to remember, and she should make this class as easy as possible, right?.

PEMDAS - Puffs Eat My Disgusting Aunt's Soup
Tori wrote her mnemonic device in beautiful, giant script across her notes.
"Puffs, meaning Hufflepuffs, Eat My Disgusting Aunt's Soup," Tori read proudly. "I'll be sure to remember that one, professor!" Heh.

Wait, had Professor Hadley just wrinkled her nose a bit at Kurumi? Or had that been more of a furrow of the brow? Either way, the woman looked flabbergasted for some reason and Kurumi's cheeks glowed a deep pink. Maybe she was an insufferable know-it-all? Kurumi hunched down in her seat a bit and promised herself that she wouldn't answer the next question no matter how tempted she was.
Then...she heard Treyen's voice...coming from the back of the room and her suspicions from earlier were only confirmed. She sunk even lower in her seat.
Kurumi smiled as August was able to make his mark. She knew how the boy had been so nervous, growing up muggle-born and not knowing anything about magic. She was glad to hear the tone of confidence in his voice.
And then they were given the task of coming up with their own personal spin on how to remember the Order of Operations. Kurumi pulled out a piece of parchment from under her textbook and began to scribble her name and other things on it. After a few minutes she found herself with two options for remembering it that were rather fitting, one perhaps a bit more than the other, and half a piece of parchment with words scratched out here and there.
"I can't decide between Parasols Expand Momentarily During Augurey’s Songs and Pinching East Makes Dough Astonishingly Sweeter," Kurumi said before resting her chin in the palm of her right hand.
Both were quite personal and easy to remember for her. Only problem is that she was revealing one of her baking secrets, but only during a full moon. Other days you needed to pinch south.
