Arithmancy One: Introduction to Spell Numerization & Basic Curse-Breaking
The room was breezy, which wouldn't have been terribly strange for the November day except that the windows closed. Having just finished rearranging the desks for about the fifth time that morning, Professor Hadley settled on having the desks pushed together in pairs.
Resting her backside against her own desk, she was flipping through the latest copy of Numbers and You as she waited the arrival of the students.
ooc: please take your seats and keep chatting to a minimum. Lesson will begin as soon as enough of you have posted arriving <3 Lesson has started. Any late arrival posts WILL be subjected to points loss, so please, pretend as though your character has been there the whole time. Oh and the same goes for editing your post; I'd rather have you DOUBLE post (and I'd merge it) then have you edit your posts. Editing posts is also subjected to points loss.... Marilyn was not looking forward to this class...Nope, not at all.
Entering the classroom, she spied several people she knew...but seeing as how Professors where taking points for the slightest thing, there would be no sitting with anyone she'd be tempted to speak to.
The best thing would be to seclude herself. Especially in this class. "Morning."

Not a very excited Nikolas headed to his Arithmancy class, it was just a bunch of numbers and remembered him of math in which he wasn't very good. Maybe it wasn't going to be boring, but the thought of it's a class about numbers quickly discouraged him.
The Slytherin entered into the classroom and greeted the woman beside the desk "Hello professor" he smiled. He went to find a seat and waited for the class to begin.

Arithmancy!!!
Since this was one of his favourites, Josh was not rushing not to be late to the class this time. He had been following when this class would start actually but shhhhhh no one should know that. Because he was no Ravenclaw, looking forward for classes.
And since he had not been rushing this time, he had spent that time to look fine and handsome which was a rare thing since he mostly came to the classed at the last minute with rather untidy uniform and hair. Smiling at the Arithmancy woman he nodded and greeted her cheerfully ''Good day, professor!'' before looking around the classroom to see who else was there.
Aha! Carter!!
Evelyn was there too. And Marilyn and Kurumi. So waving at Carter, Marilyn and Kurumi some, the Gryffindor made his way towards his she-snake and sat beside her.
*grin*

Penny nearly bounced in the Arithmancy class - she absolutely loved this subject....
Seeing the Professor at the head of the class she greeted her with a huge smile.."Good Day Professor Hadley, I hope you are well", she said as she found a seat near the front of the room..

Sooooooo Tori literally had NO CLUE what this subject was, what it meant, what they would have to do, or who taught it, but she was like, totally attending anyway. Way to solidify your nerd status, Bunbury!
Pushing her own mean self-thoughts away, the redhead flounced into the room and took a seat in the front row. "Hello, Professor," she greeted the woman at the front of the room before reaching into her bag and withdrawing a variety of quills and inks.
Yay pink ink!

Kaiya was quite excited for arithmacy. She was awesome at amth and always got A's in math. She walked into the classroom, excited to start.
"Hello, Professor Hadley!" She said, then went to find a seat near the front row.
Angelina, the first year Slytherin walked into Arithmancy class, and was hopping it would be a wonder class for her first term in Hogwarts as a first year. Angelina looked around the classroom and found the professor in the front of the class. She then walked up near the class and said, "Good day Professor." She then smiled and knodded at the professor. Angelina then sat down at a desk nearby where she was standing. She sat her things down and sat in silence waiting for class to start. Angelina sat and thought about what Arithmancy really was, but she decided to take it to find out, and to see if she liked it. But all together she was excited.
Arithmancy. The only subject that mocked Louisa - reason? It was HARD. The girl spent days and days trying to figure it out, how people used to talk about it so easily and naturally just mocked her. She entered the classroom, fingers crossed, and smiled formally at the professor. "Good day, professor." Louisa made her way then to settle down on one of the free desks that had a free match.

She liked Professor Hadley who was also their House Mistress and didn't want to disappoint her by getting points deducted from their house for unnecessary chatting.

Arithmancy...
Something Jonathan is not good at. He doesn't know much about this subject even though he tries. But still, his father was good at it before so maybe he could try and learn to it as well like he did.
The professor did say bring their wands. Wands during Arithmancy? That's new. Jonathan headed up to the classroom. Many students were already sitting as he entered. As he went to look for a seat. he saw the professor "Hello, Professor" he smiled and took a seat. Putting his stuffs on the side he did put his wand on the table already.
The first thing Ellie noticed was the desk arrangement. Were they always in pairs like that? They weren't, right? She wasn't crazy? Curious, it was. But the Captain didn't dwell on that as her eyes drifted to the Professor.
"Hey Hadley!" Cheery, she was. And...what was Hadley reading? Ellie tilted her head to better read the cover. "Numbers and You? Do they really have a magazine about this stuff?" And just WHO was BORING enough to actually read it?
She mentally shrugged and made her way to her usual seat...or as usual as it can be when set in pairs. She should make a mark on her desk...so everyone would know which was HERS. Though, Hadley wasn't too pleased with her getting ink on the desk last term... Then again, nothing was said about paint. Or a carving.

Ariella entered the Arithmancy classroom with her black bag slung over her right shoulder. Arithmancy wasn't exactly her favorite class, but at least she didn't mind the professor. "Hi, Professor Hadley," she said with a smile, taking a seat in the front.

Looking up from the edge of her magazine as students began filing in with their customary greetings of hello, Josephina would nod respectfully at them. "Hello... good morning," she would reply, dutifully. Only after some started asking her questions, did she set the magazine down beside her on her desk.

He entered the classroom as he hoisted his hello kitty school bag over his shoulder and shivered a bit from the cold. Daichi stepped towards the front of the classroom to greet the professor first. " Hello, Professor Hadley" he said with a smile after debating wether or not to disturb her reading but he knew that it would be more rude to ignore her." Had a good summer, Professor?" he asked as his expression changed in to curiousity.
Bowing a bit, Daichi turned around and sat down at the front of the class. After the Charms class where he had learned that he couldn't read the board from the back or the middle of the classroom. So the front was the only option left. Not that he minded though.
"Great summer. Thanks for asking!" Fina exclaimed, at the Slytherin boy. "Hope yours well rested." It was always good to see returning students again.

She sat at the front of the class, nearest the teachers neck. She set her bag onto the floor and got out some parchment along with her favorite quill. It wasn't anything fancy, just a plain quill she'd been using since day one.
She had hoped the Professor liked Apples and Sugar Cookies. She'd brought them for her. No, she wasn't being a kiss up, just showing Badgerly love to the teacher of her favorite subject. "Good Morning, Professor Hadley! I hope you are having a wonderful morning." She smiled, setting the bag of fresh sugar cookies along with a apple onto the desk.
And there was another student approaching her desk with a bag and an apple. The smell of fresh cookies wafted up to her nostrils and for a moment, without looking at the student who brought them up, she was going to say 'Thank you, Kurumi'. But her thoughts went before her speech, thankfully, and she glanced over - surprised to see it be NOT Kurumi there but one of her house members.
Amethyst Geleto, was her name, if Fina recalled correctly. "Not trying to keep the professor away are you, Miss Geleto?" Fina mused, looking from the snacks to the student. Baisley was going to love the cookies. "Thank you though." She nodded appreciatively at the young girl.

She froze for just a moment, wondering if he was going to be in class. Kurumi felt even more awkward around him now, even after their conversation, and she still wasn't entirely convinced that he wanted to be around her, nor was she sure she did. Suddenly, Arithmancy just got a little less appealing.
Until she looked at Professor Hadley and the smile returned to her face. "Good day, Professor Hadley," she beamed, bowing just a bit and then taking her books and parchment out of her bag. The breeze in the room pushed her papers to the side and Kurumi fell onto her desk to prevent them from going anywhere. "Part of the lesson, professor?" she asked, taking a peek up at the woman. Kurumi settled for placing her textbook on top of the parchments, preventing them from going anywhere.
And speaking of Kurumi! There she was! But ... no cookies? Perhaps the now fourth year had reserved her delectable baked goods for more special occasions, like feasts. Part of the lesson? What was? Oh. The breeze?
"Nah. I just thought a lovely breeze would do the mind well." Not to mention it was always good for her to keep up with her charm work.

Hey Hadley?! Half expecting to see her male prefect from the direction the voice had come from, minus the fact that it was a female's voice, Fina smiled in amusement at the informality of the new Ravenclaw Captain. Perhaps it was something with Eagle captains... informal behaviors?
"They have a magazine about everything, my dear." Hadley mused. How the girl ever got into Ravenclaw was beyond her, with the exception that the girl WAS smart, when she tried. Which was rare unless it was on the quidditch pitch, but it happened. "New research developments relating to Arithmancy. It's always good to brush up." Yea cause even after Hogwarts, the learning never stopped. Sorry to disappoint.

Once it seemed like there was a well enough turn out, Fina flicked her wand at the door and it gently closed. "I guess we'll just get started now. For those who have been in my classes before, welcome back! For those who this is your first Arithmancy lesson . . ." Hadley looked toward the younger students mostly now. "Welcome! I'm Professor Hadley!" In case they didn't know.
"Today's lesson will be divided in two main parts. The first, some of you might find to be slightly boring or tedious, but it never hurts to refresh ones memory on certain aspects. So just bear with me and your classmates who are new to the subject." She paused. "So new Arithmancy students, who can tell me what is numerology? And older students, please, if you will, clarify the difference between the terms Arithmancy and Numerology? How do these terms relate and intertwine with one another?"

Mina looked up from her journal and raised her hand. She kind of knew this one or at least she remembered most of it. "Numerology is the study of the relationship between a count or measurement and life; when arithmancy has more to do with divination through numbers. So arithmancy is the use of numerology in divination."

Marilyn sighed, raising her hand.
"Arithmancy is kind of like the mainstream name for seeking the future through names and numbers. Numerology, however, came after...and focuses more on the numbers and what they mean according to date of birth, etc."

Arithmancy. At least it was another of the classes that was taught by a professor Stella actually was already semi-comfortable with, even if it was honestly just another subject by itself. That didn't stop her from trying to participate and earn more points for her House, though. "Arithmancy is divination using numbers, learning about what has happened, is happening, and might hapen in our lives through analysis of numbers and calculations, while numerology is the study of the relationship between a number and our life more generally. Indirectly, they are the same thing, but more accurately, arithmancy is just, kind of, a more specific form of numerology. Numerology can be used in more ways than just divining the future because it can by used to connect numbers to just about anything. Numerical codes, for example, are more of an example of numerology than arithmancy," she said, raising her hand first for safety. Code-breaking was something her and Risa had dabbled in back in France, writing coded messages to each other and trying to decipher them .

Kurumi nodded and adjusted the book over her parchment some more. She would need to pull a piece out eventually, but for now she would let them be squished. "I suppose it is...pleasant," Kurumi nodded. Not to mention a bit chilly so it would help keep students awake.

Kurumi was almost tempted to return the professor's greeting with an 'Hello, Professor Hadley,' but she was able to bite her tongue before she could do so.
Instead, her hand shot up in the air. She had been waiting all summer for Arithmancy and NOTHING this woman taught could ever seem boring or tedious. "The term Arithmancy comes from the Greek words 'arithmo' meaning 'number' and 'mancy' meaning 'prophecy.' As can be inferred by this alone, Arithmancy is therefore a system of fortune-telling based on names and numbers. In Arithmancy, each letter of the alphabet is assigned numberical value. Based on these values, the full ‘number’ of a person’s name can be calculated and this system is used to predict personality strengths and weaknesses." She smiled as she took a pause. Numbers, so straight forward. So telling. "Numerology, I believe, came after Arithmancy and is actually a form of it that focuses on numbers and their symbolism according to birth date. Also, and this may be a bit of a stretch, Numerology is any tradition or belief in a mystical relationship between numbers and physical objects or living things." She paused for a moment gathering her thoughts. "Professor, could you say that Arithmancy is constant all around the world, but perhaps Numerology could have variants in different countries that place different significant emphasis on different numbers?"
That last bit was a bit of a stab in the dark, but she remembered around her first term when they had had a discussion about the different meanings of numbers and what things each person associated with them.

Toni quietly wiggle her quill in her hand as she awaited the class to start. Really she didn't know why she was here... oh yeah cause she hated Divination, and there was no way she was taking Ancient Runes... So Arithmancy it was. Still not a Practical Subject that she would use, but she was good in it.
So Toni was Supposedly... 'New' to the class, even though she had studied the subject in her old school. So the First question was for her to answer. Reluctant as she was to actually speak up in class.
"Numerology is..." she paused collecting her thoughts. "it's like, the study of numbers and measurements as it relates to ones life." her volume staying at it's constant soft.
There came the first question. Louisa wanted to be considered one of the 'new students' but she knew that'd upset the professor - attending this class for two years and all. She raised her hand, hesitantly, "Arithmancy means divination through numbers in Greek lingo. It is a simplified version of ancient Greek Isopsephy - letters getting calculated to a single number." Which made no sense to Louisa whatsoever. "Numerology, on the other hand, is more of a... spiritual connection between numbers and aspects of life. It was considered part of mathematics before but not anymore. It is regarded as pseudomathematics by modern scientists now."

Taking her seat, she brought out her notebook, quill, and ink, getting everything ready before Josh happened to sit down next to her. TEEHEE, Josh. Yea, she scooted her chair a little more closer to his; if that was even possible considering their desks were paired up anyways.
Having to hold onto her quill though so it didn't blow off of her desk from the breeze, Evelyn frowned and looked towards the windows, wondering if she could ask Hadley to close them. Yet they were already closed. What in the wooorrrld?
With the first question of the lesson though, Evelyn blinked and mentally shook her head, raising her hand to answer after a few others spoke up. Good Merlin, could Cookie Girl sound anymore like a book? "Arithmancy is the study of numbers, their own personal meanings that is, and how these numbers relate to or have influence on human life. The subject uses the Pythagorean number system, in which each letter of the alphabet is assigned a certain number, and by using this system and what each individual number means, we can pretty much lay out our lives from the past, present, and future, including our strengths and perhaps weaknesses we need to work on. It's like, almost a form of divination through numbers." Although that didn't mean it was always true! Goodness knows she didn't believe some of it.
"While numerology..." Nu-mer-ology. What...in the world...was that? "Well that's just what muggles study, isn't it? Pretty much the same as Arithmancy, but it's used everywhere." Everywheerrreeeee."I think muggles even use it to determine things about supposed aliens that live in space."
Hey Hadley?! Half expecting to see her male prefect from the direction the voice had come from, minus the fact that it was a female's voice, Fina smiled in amusement at the informality of the new Ravenclaw Captain. Perhaps it was something with Eagle captains... informal behaviors?

"Everything?" There couldn't POSSIBLY be a magazine on EVERYTHING. "What about....quills? I bet they don't have a magazine devoted to quills." And even if they did, it would probably quickly go out of business. No one would waste their time reading about quills. Even those that wasted their time reading at all. "And how much more can they 'develop' about numbers?" Haven't they squeezed the little buggers to their utmost potential already? So much so that they have a class telling you that the different numbers actually mean something. They really should have just stopped at 1+1=2.
Ellie refrained from snorting as Hadley made the class introduction. Mostly because ALL Arithmancy was boring and tedious. Not just 'part' of it. Honestly, the Captain only came because she liked Hadley so much. She should be soooo appreciative.
And, as she talked about with Treyen, they could never do that to Hadley - quit the subject.
As for the difference between those two...whatever it was Hadley had said, Ellie had no clue. Best let the smarty pantses answer. Always the best policy.

What is numerology? Tori wrote in beautiful pink swirling script across the top of her parchment. She sat up a little straighter and looked expectantly to the professor.
Numerology. Hmm. Maybe she should take a stab at this one?
"Numerology is the study of... numbers?" Good guess, Tori, gooood one. "And specifically how they effect or like relate to your life and stuff?"
Yeah totally.

As she stretched her hand up high into the air, she rummaged in her bag for a spare piece of parchment for some note-taking. She wasn't too fond of Arithmancy, but Professor Hadley made it quite interesting. "I'm pretty sure that numerology is just the basic knowledge of the significance and properties of numbers. And Arithmancy is is sort of like a divination class - only having to do with numbers. The two terms go hand in hand."
