Arithmancy One: Introduction to Spell Numerization & Basic Curse-Breaking
The room was breezy, which wouldn't have been terribly strange for the November day except that the windows closed. Having just finished rearranging the desks for about the fifth time that morning, Professor Hadley settled on having the desks pushed together in pairs.
Resting her backside against her own desk, she was flipping through the latest copy of Numbers and You as she waited the arrival of the students.

Any late arrival posts WILL be subjected to points loss, so please, pretend as though your character has been there the whole time. Oh and the same goes for editing your post; I'd rather have you DOUBLE post (and I'd merge it) then have you edit your posts. Editing posts is also subjected to points loss.... Unless of course you WANT to lose points ;D
"Penny did you just combine the characteristics of 1 and 9? I remember the Professor telling us to just do that and not take 19 as a whole number or add 1 plus 9 to get 10 or 0. If you did the first part, then I believe that your answer is the same as mine. Since 1's characteristics are leadership, ambition, strong will power, courageous, inventive and creativity and 9's is idealistic, global awareness and the betterment of it, compassion and generosity. I think that the basic characteristics of the number 19 is a combination of the both. Leadership and ambition, coupled with global awareness, compassion and generosity makes for a very philantrophic person with leadership qualities,"Alyssa concluded.
"What do you think, Penny? Am I on the right track?," Alyssa asked Penny hoping that she was right.

"Exactly!" She said and softly clapped her palms together. Ahh, Nora was a bit overly excited that they were done and that they had all those ideas. "That's a better way to say it." Failure. Simple enough.
"I suppose we're done... for now, aren't we?" She grinned, taking another quick look at her notes. Yup, they found all the meanings, more or less, so they were done. Hehe.
Louisa glanced around searching for any familiar faces.. or friendly ones that could take her in. "Anyone needs a partner?" She asked in general.
Gwendolyn waited patiently for further instructions. Really? Partner up? That was one thing Gwen didn't like... at all. Having to work in groups is boring. I am way better alone! I don't need anyone!, she thought, but didn't even think to say that out loud. Nope, that would be a bit too much, she decided and looked around, hoping to see some familiar faces, or someone that didn't look annoying.
Finally spotting Louisa, Gwendolyn approached her, and then said curtly: 'Still need a partner?'Hopefully... or I'll have to find someone else...
Louisa saw a young Ravvie asking for a partner and she flailed her hands above her head, "Over here, kid." The girl looked like a kid so no harm done, right? Louisa held her parchment and textbook and scooted to sit next to the girl. "Louisa Carter." She introduced herself formally before unfolding her parchment and looking at the double digits.
"So... Let's see what we've got here." The fourth year looked down at the parchment, "The first number is nineteen which's the combination of number one and number nine." The girl dragged her textbook closer so both of them could see and pointed at the numbers, "We can combine their characteristics to become one." She gave the girl a thoughtful look, trying to know whether she got it or not. "One's are Beginning, independence, innovation, leadership whereas nine's are Endings, tolerance, metamorphasis, cosmic, teaching, global awareness, perfection, power/strength, short-lived, immediacy. We can combine them to become.."
Pause.
"..short-lived independence. Or the beginnings of the endings." Louisa said in an uncertain tone. "Anyway.." She gained her confidence quickly and continued, "Let's do more." Smiling Louisa started, "Two's properties are Harmony, unity, relationships, collaboration, duality, humans/human magic. Eight's are Authority, finances, business, success, material wealth, self-mastery, complex thought/reasoning, fluidity. Twenty eight might be..." mutely mumbling the girl wrote, "Harmony between authority and self-mastery." That sounded... deep and hard to understand but it worked, right?
Louisa's head moved to see that the girl she'd met at the old ship last term was asking for a partner. "Of course. You can join us." She scooted away offering the girl to get her chair and sit next to them. "Here's what I did." She gave the girl, whose name was out of her head at the moment, the parchment.

So she put it behind her, reminding herself to copy down what they discussed as soon as she had the chance.
"I'm Adanna. First year Hufflepuff." she announced with a wide grin. So, the boy, Daichi, was a Slytherin? A year older than she, at that. He seemed pretty pleasant, however, so she decided to concentrate on the assignment. "Hm. You could be on a good track with that! Makes sense. You could even look at it as ending to beginning, instead of beginning to end. Like a new beginning, or how one things starts when and/or because another ends. If that makes sense, of course!"
"Nice to meet you Adanna" he smiled genuinely as he looked at the wide grin on her face. It made him chuckle softly. He looked back to the parchment and saw that she wasn't writing. "You can write this over later" he said as he pointed to the piece of parchment and laughed quietly. "I could use the duplication spell but i would only end up blowing it up" O_o wait!..he had just TOTALLY said he was bad at spells to a first year..eeeeh... "i mean..nevermind that!" he quickly said and decided to listen to her explanation.
His jaw dropped as Adanna started to speak. She IS a Hufflepuff right ? not a Ravenclaw? Daichi checked her badge and did indeed see a badger . Odd . "That was...brilliant..." he said after a moment silence and decided to write HER idea on the parchment.

Now for the next number. Daichi looked over at the blackboard and after squinting his eyes...he still couldn't read it. Great. "Sorry i can't read the blackboard from here..can you see what the meanings says by 2 and 8?" how ...embarrassing... But he couldn't just stand up and walk to the board right? That would have been even more embarrassing as others would see it too.

Glad to be finished Jesifur slouched back in her seat. Arithmancy was hard, but it was easier with a partner to help work it all out. She turned to Nora and said, "Thanks so much for being my partner, I was so lost at the beginning, but I think I'm starting to get the hang of it now."

Louisa smiled back at Luna. "Would you like to try and do a number, Luna?" The girl couldn't help the too sweet tone her vocal cords seemed to produce whenever a younger student, a kid, talked to Louisa. It was kind of ridiculous sometimes.
Anyways, the girl from the old ship tried to do seventy three. Louisa followed her process and nodded. "I don't get the result, either. But I think you did pretty well." Ashley wrote down what had been said, and took notes on the numbers given. He was never good at getting a partner when one was needed, and as he looked around, he figured today was going to be just the same.
So he just settled in for more writing, trying to work on the problems on his own, hoping that he wouldn't get in trouble for being alone.

Once Kourtney had made her notes, she looked up, searching for a partner. Ugh, everyone seemed to be pairing up, but then she spotted a young boy sitting alone. Rising from her seat, she walked over and offered a bright smile. "Hi! Want to be partners?"

"Sure," he said, in a somewhat brighter tone than his body language suggested. He hoped that wouldn't create a problem. People often misinterpreted what he meant because of things like that.

After speaking about the number one, Evelyn had glanced down to her notebook and noticed that the page was FAR too blank. It needed doodles of dragons! And hearts with Josh's name in it. It was such a BRILLIANT combination, she was far too pleased with herself when half of the page ended up being those two things.
"Hmmm?" Not even looking up, she tilted her head towards Marie a little bit before continuing with making another dragon. "Yea, sure."
Kourt took her seat next to the boy as he accepted her proposition for partnership. "Nope, not everyone, though I'm not surprised you thought that. Everyone kind of...moved together all at once." She placed her sheet of parchment on the desk. "Kourtney. Nice to meet you, Ashley."

This was hard. Ashley's notes were a jumbled mess that probably only made sense to him, sadly, but he shared them anyway.
"This is what I've written down so far," he said as he nudged the parchment over. He'd figured the best way to start would be to list the characteristics, then find a way to put them together individually. After that, he would try to make some sense out of it all together, but he hadn't gotten that far yet.
19 - Beginning of something short-lived and urgent - Innovation leading to perfection - Beginning of an end - Independance in gaining power/strength - Leadership and teaching?
28 - Harmony in business - Relationship success - Collaboration in finances leading to material wealth -Harmony and unity = success in finances, business, material wealth
"I think I wrote that down, actually," he realized, somewhat amused, even though really, everyone probably came up with that one. It's still an interesting coincidence to him.

"No worries, Penny. I get headaches all the time too, ESPECIALLY when it has anything to do with Math AND Numbers. So don't feel bad at all."
“Okay here’s what I’ve come up with so far. I know that it doesn’t make much sense, but hopefully I’m not too off the mark.” Alyssa leaned over to share her notes with Penny, hoping that her friend would feel better soon.
“Hmmm…I guess 28 could mean that you could have power, strength and authority but if you don’t balance it by working together and providing support, you won’t get very far….or at least that’s what I think 28 means”, Alyssa thought to herself.
“28 down. Now for 37”, Alyssa thought to herself. She hoped that Penny was still with her.
Text Cut:
Number 3 - Trinity, Union of Divine plus Human, Manifestation, Positive, Negative and Neutral, Expression, Subconscious Mind/Imagination, Creative, Optimistic, Enthusiasm, Expressive, Charming, Humor, Fun, Attractive, Friendly.
Alyssa pondered over the numbers and their meanings before writing down what she thought the characteristics of 37 meant.
"I was thinking of the words, Trinity, union of divine, spiritual, creative!! I was wondering whether it meant that it order for one to find their creative and spiritual inner self in the wizarding world, one needs to be interconnected with life, nature and mankind’s place in the universe.”
“Does that make sense so far. I figured that if I really did know the correct answers, I wouldn’t be in Arithmancy class, right?,”Alyssa grinned at Penny. “Better to guess than not guess at all”.
“Okay this isn’t getting easier is it?,”Alyssa said to Penny, shaking her head.
“Anyway, I think that the characteristics of 52 could mean that in order to be creative and imaginative in whatever one is doing, one needs to be patient and adaptable to possible changes that might crop up. One should also not just be satisfied with one solution, but should always strive to experiment and explore more possibilities, even if it involves partnering with someone else or going against your own beliefs.”
"Okay and we're down to our last number, 80".
Text Cut:
Number 8 - Achievement, abundance, executive, strength, self-disciplined, power, success, authority, psychology, entrepreneur, intensity, supervisor, provider, grandeur, material manifestor.
Number 0 - Limitless, Unity, Nothingness, Boundless, Truth, Purity, Love, All, Alpha and Omega, Possibility, First Cause, Unmanifest, Breath of God, Unified Field, Source, Space, Consciousness, Cosmic Egg, God.
“I think that the characteristics of 80 mean that the possibilities of achieving one’s goal is limitless. One just has to have the self-discipline and the inner strength to achieve it.”
"Whew! and that's what I've got. Whether it makes sense or not, your guess is as good as mine".

But did not he mentioned that too? Kinda...maybe. Eh. Whatever. It did not matter anyway. It was obviously a combination of the meanings. Good. Now he needed to figure out the meanings for those numbers Hadley had shown...with a partner.
