Default 1: Dance Theory & Practice (@ The Gazebo)

A surly looking Mr. Stryker is seated on a bench. As you enter the gazebo, he'll motion for you to take a seat on either a pillow, beanbag, or good ol' concrete. Your choice.

Please, come in! The lesson will begin shortly (OOC: 4pm EST, 9pm GMT (I think...) tomorrow), so feel free to talk amongst yourselves.

It was quite simple why Jai danced,"Self expression. Whether I'm in a good mood or a bad mood. It's expression. Besides, it's a part of my family tradition. We all have to dance. We just love to dance. Me not so much in public." he said with a shrug.

Harvey had no dance experience what so ever, but he wanted to learn for a certain someone that was in his life.

I'm ready!

Daniel was at the back near the wall, he was uncomfortable. He couldn't dance, none of the males in his family could. The ones that did made a fool of themselves. Daniel was no fool. Why did they need these classes? Daniel spotted Aurora standing, looking quite relaxed. Why couldn't he be her? Just for today?

What was Dancing about? Daniel hesitantly raised his hand "Well...to me...dancing is just something people invented because they had nothing else to do.." Which was partially true. What else did people do at parties?

Why exactly was he here?

The was like hell on Earth. No lie. Will had a strong disliking toward dance aka his term for hate. Hate was a strong word though, yah know? He had made it his mind set not to answer a single question in this class, but rather do whatever the professor instructed of him. As long as it didn't make him look like an idiot.

Speaking of looking like an idiot, these uncomfortable bean bag chairs certainly didn't help that statement. He watched as student after student answered questions and boy was there a lot of kid's. Will spotted Vashti sitting next to that weird kid who owned a deer head earlier on once she had arrived. Merlin's bless that he wouldn't have to talk or even dance with her. *grin*

Oh okay. Um....why did he dance? Because his parent's expected it of him. Because pretty girl's dragged him into it. Because the house elves drop hot things on his feet occasionally...yup. There were his reasons.

Hmm, so the lesson had started. After a bit of an apologetic glance at Matt, that they weren't able to continue their conversation, Stella turned her full attention back to Mr. Stryker as questions started to be asked and answered. She hadn't been able to tell if he'd really heard her attempt at reassuring him earlier, and in trying to decide that, she'd missed the question about experience. Oh well, she thought, before offering a response now.

"Well, I had some lessons at Beauxbatons. Mostly ballroom, but a bit of theatrical dance as well." She hadn't only beeninvolved in Shakespeare-type theater after all, even if she preferred that. "But anyway, to me, dance is another way of being artistic. Being graceful, that kind of thing. It's definitely a good way to express what you're feeling, or what someone you're acting as is feeling." Since she still mostly connected dance to theater after all.

Yeahhh, Mr White! Yeah science!

Daaacin' woz for gaals weren't it?

Ballet an' tha'.

Katrina had gone to ballet and tap when she was a small child at the local community centre, and Tom knew girls could look really graceful and nice when dancing. Blokes on the other hand--well it was no wonder the lads were outnumbered by so many girls here.

And there was another girl. One he'd spoken to at the feast. Gweniff or somefin'. She looked nervous about this too. He gave her a nod in greeting.

What did he think dance was about? *frown* “To look like a complete blaady divvy.” He mumbled quietly to himself.

"Okay, I guess we will get started. Uhm...well, bonjour and welcome to the first dance lesson of the year. For those of who do not know me, I am Mr. Chad Stryker. I am the school groundskeeper," and not a dance teacher," and I am being forced to teach this dance class, no thanks to a certain third year Slytherin female who told Lord Borr in her assignment last term that I sucked at dancing." He was rambling.

"Now, before we go any further, does anybody here have any dance experience? If so, what type of dance do you do?" He was totally going to exploit those students to teach the rest of the class because he knew NOTHING.
For reasons she didn't even remember, Sierra was out for a walk on the grounds. Her kneazle, Hissy Fit, was right by her side, and Sierra was looking down so as to avoid meeting the gaze of anyone that annoyed her. She was pretty much lost in thought when she heard the phrase 'third year Slytherin female'. Her eyes grew wide and she darted behind a nearby tree. Ever so often, she'd edge forward a little but still end up hiding behind a tree. She hadn't wanted to attend this dance lesson--not at all; but she'd pretty much been listed as the reason this whole thing was being held in the first place. Not by name, but how long would luck keep it that way? She should...maybe...edge on up there and ensure her name was kept a secret, hmm? Yes. She thought so.

By the time this question had been asked, Sierra had edged up so much that she was now a part of the group. Maybe the groundskeeper wouldn't notice she'd missed the first question. "I don't dance," she answered, her hand raised, "but I think it's about exercise?" That came out more as a question than a response, but Sierra never claimed to be a dance expert. Nope. "Oh, and going out on dates, too." People always danced on dates and at balls.

Why did she dance? Why did she beathe? It was natural...it was how she stayed a live. Dramatic much?

" Dancing is my escape. I dance because I can lose myself and forget about everything around me. My body takes control and my mind..my mind is lost in the music, the stress of life is so much less significant and the only thing that matters is moving. It is about expression yes but its also about release.." tension, stress anxiety...."besides it keeps me looking good and gives great flexibility, poise and balance." She couldn't forget the physical benefits of course.

Penny listened to Mr. Stryker ask the student and staff if any of them could dance - and much to Penny's surprise, some of them did know..

She did not know how to dance - well she did prance around a bit at home with the radio blaring, but she doubted that could be classed as dancing in any culture

Penny thought about Dance and what it meant to her...putting her hand in the air she said "Well dance is about expressing and celebrating things, like weddings or Christenings - although some cultures dance for rain or sun or food"

Penny smiled a little at the thought of the Hufflepuff house team doing a sun dance before their first quidditch game of the term, to ensure perfect flying conditions.

An affirmative nod. "I think it's suitable." It matched his respect for fellow students. And his tie.

Once she was all settled, she straightened her spine a little and extended her hand to him. "Charner Hope Rainbow." A slight frown tickled the sides of her mouth. "But you can just call me Arnie....Or Yo!-Girl." Didn't much matter to her. "And I won't laugh. A promise is a promise and a deal is a deal. I'd only break it if you were one of my brothers." Which thank Merlin's unwashed beard he wasn't. One finger reached out and poked the boy in the side. "It's not polite to assume people will do things when they say they won't." She wasn't the greatest on manners, but that she knew. "Plus, I'm sure you're not SO bad that you could make me break our deal." She tapped her lip in thought. "If you do, or are, and I do laugh, I'll buy you a new beanie-bag."

Heh. Was she putting up a challenge? Maybe.

With a grin, she dropped her hands into her lap and tilted her head at the boy. "And I don't know how to dance either. Just know about it. My brother has declared that I am impossible of absorbing any type of etiquette into my being. So I figured this is a good way to prove him wrong."

'About time,' wrote her father in her last owl from him, that she had received earlier that morning. Merlin, this would be interesting. The blonde Malfoy enjoyed dancing but she wasn't exactly the best dancer in the whole world due to being a little clumsy.

The Slytherin walked over towards the growing group of students and Professors. "Good Morning Professor Stryker," she said to the man and then turned around to face one of her other Professors who seemed to be here. "Hello Professor Bentley! How are you?" she asked with a smile. Emma looked around the crowd, searching for a familiar face and she found Nikolas there. She assumed that she could hang out with him. So then she made her way over to him and took a seat next to him. "Hey! What's up?" she said, with a wide smile and then saw another girl who looked about her age sitting by him. "Hi. I'm Emma."
"Lord Nikolas? I like that one" he nodded and smiled, much better than Bean-bag-boy but she could call him whatever she wanted. So, Yo-girl did have a name. "I'll call you both, Arnie and Yo-girl" he admitted.

Yo-girl was actually promising she would not laugh at him, at which he felt pleased and surprised because most of the people would actually laugh at him. Still, he didn't mind at all. But the best part was the challenge. "I will try to make you laugh just to have a new beanbag chair" he said with a mischievous smile. He knew Arnie would try hard to not laugh after this challenge so he would do his worst dancing movements.

He chuckled when Arnie admitted her brother didn't believed she could have manners "Why did he thinks that?" he wondered.

And then his attention turn to a voice that he recognized...Emma. " Just waiting for the class to start" he looked at the Slytherin sitting beside him "Even though I don't know what I'm doing here, I got no dance skill" he shook his head. Oh look! the class has started.

Nikolas snort a bit when he heard Mr. Stryker had been forced to teach dancing. Poor man. If Nikolas was him, this would totally be a torture. Dance experience? YES! None. This was going to be interesting if they dance today. Mostly with a partner, he would kicked someones feet accidentally. And what if was to a pretty girl? Oh noo that definitely could not happen.

Mr. Stryker asked again another question and this time Nikolas did answered. "About...having a good time?" he assumed "Or for excercise or simply a hobby" he replied "Or like she said..." he looked at the Slytherin girl "For dates and parties". Parties were fun and that was the only time he actually dance...or tried to.

Oh, she really liked this man. This was her favorite subject to speak on in the entire world.

She waited until after others had spoken and then raised her hand, taking her turn to speak. "I dance because...well I just simply love it and it runs in the family. When I'm feeling stressed or sad, I just put on music and let the rhythm take over. I don't think while I dance...I mean, you have to think to get the technical aspects down, but I don't consciously think of each move. I just go with what feels right with the music; whether its turns, or leaps, or just a two-step. It's definitely always a great mood-booster and an awesome way to express yourself."

She honestly could go on and on about it, but she'd stop there. Grinning, she clasped her hands in her lap and awaited the professor's next question.

Why did she dance? Well, the truth was that her mother had forced her to start classes at a young age, but she obviously couldn't tell the professor that. Nor if she said it, would she be being honest to herself; she loved dancing. "I think the thing that appeals to me most about dancing is the way your body can express a feeling or emotion the way words cannot; it's an entirely different form of style and communication. It's a language that is felt instead of heard." Adelyn grinned, confident with her answer.

Lauren beamed broadly in response to Orchid's question, but couldn't really elaborate as the teacher had started talking.

Umm, experience. The Professor, or groundkeeper, had asked about their experience. "I've danced a bit around the world in different cultures, salsa, ballroom, tribal and then just dancing in clubs... umm, not clubs, discos, suitable for my age," she babbled.
"And I like dance, I guess, because it's profoundly liberating."

Keefer waived his hands around in the air. "Dance is like.. emotion incarnate! When I'm happy, I do a jig. I can't help it, it just sort of... comes out." Not that it looked any good, more like clumsily falling down in time with the music.

Well, wasn't this fun. The School NURSE had appeared as well... with what looked like a medical kit. Ryden frowned, and swallowed. She hadn't thought of the possibility that she might need medical attention but if SHE was here, then perhaps it was time to leave. The blonde could always take dancing lessons some other time, right?

Rig- KOALA BOY. Jumping about a mile in the air, Ryden STARED at her boyfriend as he sat down next to her, and was about to comment on the fact that he should LEAVE when the caretaker began.

Dangnabbit.

Feeling a blush start as talks of dancing began, Ryden kept her head down and said little. She had no experience, and frankly, she had no idea what dancing was about. Moving in a way that looked pretty? Exercise? Public humiliation? A horrible play by the graceful people on the ungraceful?

Eyeing the students who were tossing around answers, the blonde made a face. Clearly the people who didn't know how to dance were the minority. Hmpf.

Gideon looked around and watched as various hands were raised at the groundskeeper's question. It was interesting to say the least to see just who that group entailed out of the group of students from the four houses. He himself didn't really have any practice with dancing so he couldn't exactly answer on his own. And when the topic moved on to why they danced, the fourth year remained quiet at first.

Maybe he shouldn't have come...

Chicken...

"Umm perhaps a form of fun exercise...to do something other then sitting around or walking," he mused to answer the part he could. After all Borr had assigned it as part of his desire for them to stay in shape.

What was dance about? For Vashti, it was about falling on her face and tripping over her own two feet, which was why she didn't dance. So perhaps she should think of the question as: What do you think dance is supposed to be about?

So she finally raised her hand. "I guess for the people that actually do dance, it's about having fun." Because why would anyone do it if it wasn't fun for them in some way?

As she looked around the class at the people answering, she spotted something that just made this class even worse. Why was Will Fullmer here? Did he like dancing or something? He didn't look all that happy, but Vashti wasn't sure she'd ever seen him actually happy so that was normal. Dear Merlin, if they had to practice dancing any time soon and he saw just how awful she was, she'd never live it down - unless she could avoid him after this which clearly didn't seem likely. He kept popping up everywhere she was. Sigh.

This was a weird class. Was it even a class? Isobel didn't know, and she didn't really care. However, she did know that it amused her, and that was why she was still there. She also wanted to earn points for Hufflepuff, but she wasn't sure if that was possible in this weird class that was not a class. She glanced over at Maybelle when she said she danced a lot. Figures. That girl was weird, but that was probably why they were friends. Hesitantly she raised her hand, but when she spoke, she spoke with confidence. "I think dancing is a way to express yourself. Everyone has a different style of dancing, and it shows what they are like inside. They can express different emotions through how and what they dance."

Emotional support, he needed it. Chad was totally crying inside.

------------------

Hmmm, so some had experience and many didn't. This was definitely going to be an experience.

"Hmm, okay. Well, then, for those of you that do dance, including those that randomly dance in your house," he grinned, "Why do you dance? What is it about dance that appeals to you?" He leaned back a bit. "And, for those of you that do not dance. What do you think dance is about?"

Marilyn had just decided to listen to Cass and ignore Rafe's stupid mouth. He didn't even have anything to do with her anymore. She was with Carter and he was just...there, trying to continue irritating her.

He wasn't worth it.

The Professor was starting and Marilyn smirked when Cassie began talking about her dancing. It was surprising that her sweet Hufflepuff friend was so into it.

As for Marilyn...

"I have 10 plus years of formal ballroom training..." Her daddy had been perfectly clear about the importance of dance. Lessons had been grueling, at first...but Marilyn had begun to enjoy it as time progressed.

What was dancing about? Why did it appeal to her...Well, this was a tad bit harder to explain.

"Well, its about two people...feeling the music and rhythm within each other. As for me, sir, I use it as an outlet for anger and frustration..." Why not be honest? These people where in no position to judge her...

Eris would have to agree with a few others in the room, one she danced because she had to, but also two, it felt fun when her father would lift her on his toes for a dance to some old music.

Liking the latter answer more she raised her hand, "Because it makes me happy" she answered with a childish and carefree grin.

Eira had been quietly sitting alone on the cement , somewhat off to the side. Her mother would have definitely forced her to come dance if she knew that there would be dance classes this year. She took the liberty of going herself so she could at least say she made some sort of lady like effort.... she knew how to ballroom dance after being subjected to many lessons of it , though it wasn't too awful. The formality was the part that really was no fun.

Mr. Stryker , who looked incredibly unenthusiastic and sounded that way too......she couldn't say as she blamed him......., asked of those who did dance why they danced and what about dance appealed to them. He also asked those who did not what they believed dance to be about.

When an opening in speech was available , her quiet and polite voice perked up from her lonely little section of cement. " I danced at first because my family expected it of me and I was given lessons , ballroom style mostly. Now I dance because it is a form of freedom to me. Dance can be one of the most expressive forms of body language and freedom there is and it is something anyone can do , almost anywhere and for really any reason. Though I do think that dancing in my room is the most fun...it doesn't matter what way you dance or what you wear in your room and heels can be a pain......." Yes she was still not terribly fond of heels and frilly dresses. Rain dancing amongst her mothers rosebushes , for example, was much more fun than waltzing in frilly frocks with the neighbor boy creature. Every time she thought of heels now though , she had to smile at the thought of what Daichi did to the last pair she had.

Dancing Through Life

Dancing. This would be easy. It was what Presley did, better than anything else. She was a dancer, heart and soul. She loved dance more than theatre, luckily, a lot f the time they went hand in hand. What appealed to her? Well, everything. She raised her hand. "I have always had a passion for movement, and I think discovering different kinds of movement, and how they can all be so beautiful, is what appeals to me. It's also a good work-out." The last part was just an added bonus. But it was true!

He, for the first time since being told he was going to teach this blasted class, laughed slightly. "Not looking like an idiot and meeting people," he mused, nodding his head. "Excellent logic, two points."

Chad looked to see where the next answer was coming from and his eyes widened in surprise as he saw who it was. Suddenly, they narrowed, as if they were acquiring a target and sending mental missiles her way. He then relaxed. This class wasn't going thaaaaaaaaaaaaat bad.

"A good answer, Miss Greingoth. Two points. So glad you could join us," he nodded, giving her a look as if mentally telling her that she better behave.

He paused in his walking to think again. "Quite a few people talked about ballroom dancing. Now, as I know, there are many types of dances within ballroom. Who can name one?"

OOC: Please only post ONE type of dancing in your post. I'm looking for around fifteen different types. If you list a bunch, I will only take the first one in the list.
