It was a bitter-cold morning. The wind whirled and howled, rustling the leaves on the trees violently. Admittedly it probably wasn't the best day to have a lesson on the Schooner, in fact it would have been more appropriate in the spring time. But... the students would survive.
As you board the main deck of the Schooner you are confronted with an unexpected sight. It had been transformed to look like a makeshift classroom. Small desks and chairs had been arranged in rows across the deck, facing the front where Professor Bentley was standing, writing on the small blackboard there. Surrounding her was a row of ominous looking ...fish tanks? covered with sheets. An eerie bluish-green light emanated out from behind the sheets, casting a strange glow across the first two rows of desks.
Situated slightly off to the side was the largest tank. It was tall and tubular.
Once she had finished writing her message on the blackboard Professor Bentley stood off to the side of the deck waiting to greet the students as they arrived. She was full of energy and excitement, but contained this in order not to scare the students away.

post #4: add 3 Ltrs of sea water
astronomizzle ♧ gryffinDORK | & the rest is drag ♣ #badluckDerf
Looking back at her plastic cup, Kurumi picked it up off the table and poured its contents into her tank. Hardly enough to even dampen the surface of the clay.
Cup in hand, Kurumi dashed over to the tank filled with sea water, filled it up to the brim, and hurried back to her own small tank where the coral was waiting. She repeated this at least ten times, adding cupful after cupful of of salt water. However, it became very clear to her that this was NOT the most efficient way of doing this since she had barely covered the surface of the clay.
Setting the cup down on the table, Kurumi removed her wand from its turquoise holster and flicked it towards her cup. "Engorgio," she whispered as the cup grew first to twice its size, then twice that, and twice more still.
Now the size of a large bucket, Kurumi returned to the salt water tank, dipped it into the liquid, and struggled to pull it back out. "This weighs about as much as ten Walnuts," she grunted as she slowly waddled back to her station and poured the water into it. She had to repeat this process one more time, but managed to do so after only spilling half of the contents of the second giant cup on the deck.
Arms throbbing a bit from carrying such a heavy load across the boat, Kurumi slouched down in her seat for a moment to observe her purple coral in its tank. She would get to the next step in just a bit.

Take a cutting off the original specimen, 20 cm long.
Take one of the small tanks and fill the bottom with 30 cm of clay.
Using your fingers mould the bottom end of the cutting into a small whole in the clay, about five cm deep.
Add 3 Ltrs of sea water.
Then finally add one drop of Mooncalf Solution.
Alright now she was three steps down, and still had to make the detour of the mooncalf solution. Using her fingers she moulded the bottom end of the cutting into a small whole in the clay that was about five centimeters deep. Mmm, it looks simple - and she didn't mind if her hands looked mucky. She was helping the coral LIVE.
SPOILER!!: Solution
Making Mooncalf Solution
1/4 ounce Mooncalf Dung
700 ml water
Mix until dissolved.

Now to fill the tank for the coral to have something to live in like it did in their natural habitat. Sea water....not anything around here for the lake was likely fresh water but thankfully as he followed others already at that stage retrieving it from a container he knew where to get it from. Little by little Simon worked to fill his tank up making sure to measure the liquid as he went until he finally had the three liters.
Whew...he mused breathing in the smell of the salt water as he worked, the smell only making him feel more under the weather. The boy sitting down to take a break before he attempted the last and final step.

Mom says I have no sense of direction, so I packed my bags and right.
Oakey went to his Mooncalf dung. Wait...wasn't dung poop If Oakey wasn't wearing gloves he would never do this. He took the Mooncalf Poop and put it in the little cup of water. He mixed it it until it was gone then poured it into his tank.
The last part was the easiest. Only one drop of the Mooncalf Solution and Bubbles would be all set. Now where is the solution... Oh, of course. They had to mix that. Yay, more time to spend with Bubbles. Eino took the solution recipe and read over it before he gathered the necessary ingredients: mooncalf dung and water. He measure one fourth of an ounce of the mooncalf dung and seven hundred millimeters of water. After that he mixed them while he hummed to the coral and finally it all dissolved. He added one single drop tot he water, then he placed Bubbles neatly in the tank. How pretty she looked! But now he had a whole lot of mooncalf solution. "Umm, excuse me..." He said to his fellow students. "I have some solution left if anyone would like to use it." He then placed it on top of the table and returned to his seat.

Walking up to the Coral, Mina eyed it carefully. She only needed so much of it and she didn't want to cut from a section that had already been depleted too much. Seeing a section that hadn't been cut from, she made her way over. There was probably some debt over which method of cutting was probably best for the coral and she weighted the decision before reaching for her wand. If she was in potions, she would have probably chosen the knife, as it did give her a bit more control; but she did feel extremely confident in her charm work.
Measuring the desired length, she pointed her wand and cast a quick diffindo before returning her wand to its home in its holster. Taking the cutting, she returned to her desk.
Placing the cutting on the desk, she went to jot down her progress in her journal.

Alright with the Mooncalf potion made, and available she was ready to move onto the fifth and final step of replanting the pretty pretty coral. Which was going to be a habbit for her, replanting and replanting and replanting until she had a pretty coral forest for all of her potions needs. Mhmm she was going to be a potions Mistress with her own private source of the rarest of rare ingredients called her own greenhouse. Yup. The Greenhouse Potion...Green House Potions - that would be a good store name she thought with a smirk. Selling her own personal creations and all that but she was getting distracted.
Clearing her throat, and her mind in time she quickly dropped one small drop of mooncalf solution into the piece of corals new home. Maybe it'll be happy there? She thought with a smile.

Salander stepped up to where he can cut the Stubby Purple Coral, taking ahold of the knife that the Professor offered them. He knew what difindo was but he liked knives way better. With a few flicks of his wrist he cut off a tiny part of the plant about 20 cm long, then grabbed one of the tanks before returning to his table.

#2: Take one of the small tanks and fill the bottom with 30 cm of clay.

With step one complete and out of the way, Sierra paused for a brief moment to use her thumb and forefinger to rub the bridge of her nose. Why was she still feeling so terrible?! She rarely ever got sick! She didn't even remember coming into contact with anything. Blahhh.
She peered over at the board to check on step two. Oh, ...perfect. Filling the bottom of a tank with clay didn't seem that difficult. She was starting to like Herbology. Dealing with plants was a lot less intense than, say...deciphering Runes. She retrieved some clay and measured out 30 centimeters of it.
After locating an unused tank, she set to work filling the bottom of it with the clay she'd measured out. She took a few moments to spread it around and pat it down, and soon it had completely filled the bottom of the tank. Whew! This sort of thing was so much harder when a person wasn't completely well. She seriously needed a nap.
1. Take a cutting off the original specimen, 20 cm long.
Lexi slowly made her way up to the tanks with her cloak pulled around her to try and stave off the chill. Meh. Taking her wand from it's holster she grabbed a piece of the coral with her other hand, letting the cloak billow out behind her. After giving a hiccup/burp thing she cast a nonverbal Diffindo taking off a piece that was approximately 20 centimeters long.
Really... gouging, slicing, fire... she LOVED all of those spells. Hehe.
Anyway back to class. Flicking her wand toward a tank she began to levitate it out in front of herself as she headed back to her desk.

Sierra sighed as she looked back up to the board. Step three, which meant she was almost halfway finished. She was so close to getting this done, and so close to her bed in the common room. Maybe she could talk one of the other snakes into bringing her something to eat, too... Hmm.
Alright. Time to jab her fingers into the clay. She rolled up her sleeves a little and then dug right in. She mashed around and around, slowly starting to form a hole. When she thought she was done, she moved away and eyed her hole. Hmm. It wasn't quite five centimeters deep. Blahh.
She set to work jabbing again, and she watched as her hole grew bigger and bigger. It had to be about four centimeters now, and so she slowed down on the jabbing a little and watched as the whole grew just a tiny bit bigger. She pulled out her hands and again eyed the hole. Five centimeters alright.
2. Take one of the small tanks and fill the bottom with 30 cm of clay.
Finally making it back to her desk after what felt like an hour long trek she looked back to the board and wiped sweat from her brow... cold sweats; AWESOME. -___-
She groaned a little bit when she saw that the instruction was to cover the tank bottom with clay. That totally meant she had to take her gloves off and use her hands. Not cool.
Sighing she did just that, though. Reaching into the tank she began to smooth the clay around and took care to eye it and such to make sure she was not going to go over the 30 centimeter requirement.
After what seemed like an ETERNITY of pushing and such she grimaced down at her hands and then turned back to the board for the next bit of instructions. Fun. No. Not really.

He placed the tank on the table and lay the small plant tubing beside it, then glanced at the board. Okay so they have to use clay for this one. And of course he'd forget to get that. Silently headsmacking himself, he returned to the supply pile with his tank, filling it with enough clay soil and went back to his desk.

Kurumi examined her parchment that had instructions to how to mix the Mooncalf Solution and thought that it was rather sad that each of them would mix so much of the solution for a simple drop. Grabbing a bowl, Kurumi added water to it and was about to mix in the...fertalizer when she heard Eino speak and set his remaining solution on the table. Laughing, Kurumi flashed her Ravenclaw friend a smile. "I'll accept that offer," she waved. Eino was much better at potions than she was and her had a real knack for Herbology as well.
Taking her dropper, Kurumi walked over to his Mooncalf Solution and extracted some before returning to her tank and added one drop. She wondered whhat would happen if you added more than one...was almost tempted to add another just to see what would happen...but was able to contain her curiosity for the moment.
Sitting down, Kurumi leaned her elbows on the table and watched her coral, half expecting some sort of transformation to take place.

Now back at his desk he pat-patted the tank to even out the clay, scooping out and setting aside any excess. Satistfied that the clay is about 30 cm deep now he dented the clay slightly with his finger before fitting in one end of the plant, then pushing the clay up against it burying it partly and securing it

Fighting the natural urge to wipe her clay covered hands all over someone else's robes Lexi simply wrinkled her nose up and looked back to the board for the next instruction. Maaaaaan. She had to mess around with the clay AGAIN?!
That did it! She officially did not like Herbology anymore. NOPE. Trying to keep from heaving all of the place she sucked in a deep breath and reached back into the tank and began to poke two fingers into the clay kind of making a circular motion with her fingers to burrow out the hole. EW. EW. EW.
After a few moments she had dug out the hole to 5 centimeters. YAY for that. At least. SIGHS. Okay onto the next step.
Brielle smiled in glee, finally, the part she had been waiting for. She stared at the attendance in her small hands.

It was time to do Ravenclaw a bit justice. She just hoped she could perform better today. Looking up to the blackboard, she blew her black hair from her face and stood up up to get one of the knives in the front of the room. She could have performed the cutting charm well, but she really felt like doing things slowly this time, it was for a cause after all. Putting her gloves on, Brielle brought all the materials she needed to her desk and began cutting 20 cm of the coral.

Salander looked up at the board again, staring a bit at the word sea water wondering where are they gonna get that given that they were in the middle of a lake?
Of course the supply pile. So back the Slytherin lad went again with his clay filled planter/tank and measured out the sea water, being very gentle that he doesnt dislodge the newly planted Purple Coral.
He glanced on more time at the board then frowned. Moon calf solution? He looked back, there wasnt anything that said mooncalf solution in the supplies. He made his way back to his desk and saw another piece of paper he failed to notice earlier. Oh lookit that, the instructions for Mooncalf solution.
And that required another trip to the supplies pile.
Cue silent headsmacking.

Again, Sierra turned toward the board. Add three liters of sea water. Really? That was it? Perfect. Better then perfect, really. It was probably the easiest step up there, and right now, easy was what she was going for. After this, all she'd have to do is mix and add that solution, and then she'd be done!
Realizing how close she was to being finished sort of gave Sierra that extra little push she needed to get a move on and hurry up, pretty much. She looked around the table and found all the materials she'd need to use to measure the right amount of sea water. She poured until she had exactly three liters, and then she added the sea water into the tank.
After the beautiful plant from the Amazon forest, they moved on to this purple coral.. "Woah.." After writing her notes down about it, they then move on to the practical part. Yay...
SPOILER!!: Instructions...
Re-planting Stubby Purple Coral
Take a cutting off the original specimen, 20 cm long.
Take one of the small tanks and fill the bottom with 30 cm of clay.
Using your fingers mould the bottom end of the cutting into a small whole in the clay, about five cm deep.
Add 3 Ltrs of sea water.
Then finally add one drop of Mooncalf Solution.
Putting on her protective gloves, she starts doing the the first step. Stepping up to the tank, she measures 20cm long as accurate as possible and cuts it. Whew... Now the next one. She then looks up to the board to see the next step...
Last edited by FWT<3Draco; 05-29-2011 at 05:52 AM.
Okay. Lexi was ALMOST done. Yipee! She had already placed her little piece of coral into the clay and was ready to move onto the next part.
Having seen that the next step was to add 3 liters of sea water she flicked her wand toward the supplies and summoned a container of it over. Why get up and move around the already rocky boat thingy? Pssssh.
Catching the container she removed the lid and dumped it in the tank. Smiling slightly she put the container back on her desk and smiled... sort of. Her little piece of coral was THERE... there in the water and clay and stuff. She STILL had it decided that she disliked Herbology for having made her get dirty, but that was pretty cool nonetheless.
5: Mooncalf Solution (also, proof she is wearing gloves XD)
Hiss!Roar!Growl!Caw! | Hermione's Double | The Little Three | Alecate
Wait just a minute--dung!? They'd be working with dung now?! Ewww. She looked down at her gloves and then pushed them up as high as they'd go. She wanted to make extra sure they were on as tightly and as securely as possible. If she was going to be dealing with dung, she was at least going to be protected from it.
Ugh, and she feeling sick enough as it was...
She retrieved one-fourth of an ounce of mooncalf dung, measured out seven hundred milliliters of water, and then mixed both together. When she was done mixing, she used a dropper to collect exactly one drop of the solution. Placing the dropper directly above the tank, she squeezed just once, and then she watched as a single drop landed in the tank.
Brielle checked the size of the piece she had cut and smiled when it indicated she had cut just the right amount. She had taken a tank earlier, so all she had to do now was pull the tank and clay to the center of the desk. Careful as she always was, Brielle added the tank little by little, making sure that the clay was even. She measured as the clay began to rise. 10 cm... 20... 30! "Good enough," she whispered to herself as she stared down at the tank.
Mooncalf dung... she LOATHED this substance more than almost anything in the world. It totally creeped her out. Really. Poop was not supposed to shine... or be touched for any reason. EVER.
Whimpering slightly she summoned the things she needed for this step. SIGH. Okay. She measured out the water and dung and placed them in a small container which she tapped with her wand and sent it all to swirling around, stirring itself. Mhm.
After a little bit she examined the mixture to see that everything was dissolved and such. Feh. That was SO gross. Taking the little dropper she sucked up just the right amount of the solution and dropped it into the tank as well.
Okay. That was OVER. Removing her gloves she tossed them onto the desk along with the supplies she had already used and then plopped into her seat and pulled her cloak back around herself.
GEEZ! Was this class ever going to end? She was SO hungry it felt like her stomach was eating her backbone!
