| | The Greenhouses: Herbology Lesson Three Herbology Lesson Three
As you enter greenhouse two you find a peculiar scene. Instead of the regular long table with bags of dung and empty pots, you find that the long table is covered in a lovely purple tablecloth and the greenhouse is decorated with extravagant displays of flowers and creeping ivy. In addition to this new phenomenon there are platters of lovely floral cupcakes all along the table, each embellished with various edible flowers. Pots of tea with teacups are also positioned at intervals along the communal table.
Professor Bentley is found sitting on the corner of her desk at the front of the room munching on one of the sugary cupcakes. The black board beside her, displays the following instructions in neat cursive writing: Quote:

Enya began to tap her fingers against the desk in Boredom, she was tempted to take another cupcake as they were so nice but instead took a cup of tea. Mmm, warm tea. Taking a sip she looked sideways at Louisa and leant over to her to whisper, "Surprised to see me?" She asked "You'd look at the leaves and the appearance of the plant" She said turning back to face the professor.

Seren took a sip of her tea, and grabbed a second cupcake. Yes she was entitled to a second cupcake, she did bake them after all. Well, Helena would definitely check if the plant was a human eating one. She had no idea how, but that's what she'd check first.
" I'd look for thorns or... spiky things. I mean... something that's dangerous and visible, if that makes sense." It kind of did, for her at least. Because there could be some poisonous plants if eaten, or something like that. Right?

Hmmm...flower smell in here...
That didn't make her start to feel sleepy or anything. O_O
Yet, she was determined to stay awake! There was no way she was going to fall asleep in Herbology class. That was strictly reserved for Divination only. Maybe if she got one of those cupcakes and, poked it with her quill, that would make her stay awake. Yush. "Perhaps the color and the way the plant moves, if it moves at all." she suggested. Some plants move weird. Like that flitterbloom.

Kurumi really didn't know too much about identifying plants, and whatever she did know was directly related to flower arranging practices that her mother had pounded into her head. She searched her memory for something, so small connection that she could make between the two. "What sort of flower the plant has," Kurumi said after a few moments with her hand up. "Or, if not a flower what other sort of reproductive structure the plant has." Strangely enough, flowere were the reproductive structure. Wait...is that why someone had mentioned...naw, never mind. Storks delivered babies, everyone knew that. "For example, some flowers have a plate, cup, or bell shaped feature like daffodils where as others seem a bit more one dimensional and just have a face like orchids. Plants like ferns will not have flowers, but spores instead."
Were they going to identify flowers again like they had done in Divination? Kurumi hadn't minded that assignment too much...but Kurumi was getting a bit nervous with suggestions from her fellow students that were somewhere along the lines of 'if the plant eats you or not.' No man-eating plant please!

Ariella raised her hand. She was glad to be learning more about plant, but it seemed like most of her classes for the past few weeks always had something to do with them. Luckily, her mother loved to garden and had explained to her all about them. "I would look at the flower of the plant. If there wasn't a flower or some sort of blossom, I would study the plant's movement and color." It seemed like everyone was saying the same things.

Right... board.
With another flick of her wand, the blackboard began to add more words to their list. Quote:

What do we look at when we identify plants?
Leaf shape
Size – height, width etc.
Spikes, thorns, fangs etc.
Colour – plant, petals etc.
Movement
Reproductive structure
Flower shape – bell, plate, cup etc.
Nuts/berries – shape, size, colour etc.
Bark – colour, shape, texture etc.
Root System – size, colour, level of exposure etc.
Cautions "Now you've all mentioned some really good identification factors... but we missed a few. The colour, shape and size of a plants berries and nuts are also telling factors of what they are. Particularly the berries."
Turning to the board again breifly to indicate that she had written all this up... "Then the bark, and root system of the plant - because trees and strubs don't always have flowers, so we can look at the barks texture, colour and shape as well." Though it often didn't seem like it... there were differences between bark.
"The root system of the plant can also help you identify what it is, again this is more relevant to trees and shrubs. Butress roots and exsposed roots are particularly useful to be abel to identify." "So now we've already established that the colour of a plant or even the berries can indicate to us that it may be poisonous, though this is not always the case, it is usually better to be safe than sorry. So what other cautions should we be aware of when dealing with plants - including shrubs, trees and aquatic flora." OOC: Same as before, please note only ONE aspect, so that other people have options to consider. Feel free to be creative.

"Some plants have oily looking leaves, I don't remember what the official name is for this oil, but it can cause severe skin rashes," Kurumi suggested with her hand up in the air. "I am sure that there are other things that plants secrete that could be harmful.”

Okay she was on a roll for a change, actually participating in a class. Woah. Sipping her tea once more she looked around the class room at other students and Louisa. "Look for thorns? or any stinging factors on the plant?" Woah she was sounding like she'd read a book!

“Well, perhaps certain creatures are attracted to a certain plant’s flower or scent. Dangerous creatures perhaps. If you were to roll around in a field of flowers that contained the scent of a flower that a certain type of dangerous bee particularly enjoyed, it could cause an entire swarm to go after you,” Kurumi mused looking up for a bit as she continued to think on the subject. “Bees to not like to be provoked and with one flailing around to try and make them go away, being completely unaware that it was the smell attracting the bees to themselves, they could get stung. Many people are allergic to bee stings, so this could end in a very terrible situation. Many bees are only able to sting once and then they die. Lying in a field of flowers could cause an entire species of bee to go extinct!”
Well, Professor Bentley DID ask for them to think outside of the box…

There. Moving plants. Quote:

What could happen if they were exposed to unidentified plants? Lots, ranging from mild rashes to death. 'But Professor, even if we know what the plant is, we may still be in great danger if we don't know how to defend ourselves. For example, if someone was caught in Devil's Snare, unaware that its movements could be stopped through exposure to bright light, they would be strangled anyway, even having identified the plant. So it is important to know what makes a dangerous plant stop.' Wait, what were they talking about again? Her answer was very far from the point, but hey, it was outside the box. Way out.

Ok. That was probably the most out of the box thinking Aiden could make. .... mmm not the response she was looking for. "Yes, caring for plants is the main point of herbology, but what cautions do we need to consider for ourselves?" Quote:

There. Moving plants.
"It could be even fatal, if it is unidentified. Pretty much anything could happen," Helena said as she raised her hand. Well, even the identified plants could be harmful. Then... why wouldn't the unidentified ones be? Seren nodded, listening intently as Helena spoke of the Chinese Chomping Cabbage. "So we need to be cautious... not so much for plants that move... but for ones that have teeth and bite?" This was more along the lines of what she was thinking. Quote:

So it is important to know what makes a dangerous plant stop.' Wait, what were they talking about again? Her answer was very far from the point, but hey, it was outside the box. Way out. Oh... k... "Yes dear, you're right, knowing how to identify plants is one thing, knowing how to defend against them is another. But in terms of defending against them... what sort of things do we need to consider? what do we need to be cautious of?"
As in how many different ways may our lives be endangered by plants?... those cautions.
Sighing, Seren finished off her tea, and poured herself another. Perhaps the students needed more... direction with this than she originally thought. At least they would benefit from the lesson. "Ok so... you have been able to identify a few points that we need to consider when exploring and caring for plants, whether they be magic or mundane... though in this case more magic." "On the board there I have added some other aspects which you should consider. Magical plants can be immensley diverse, and very frightening. From flammable bushes, the omnivorous trees, as well as regular fangs, teeth and vines... studing plants can be a dangerous thing. Always... remember to preceed with caution." Quote:

Once you are in your groups I want you to come up with a minimum of three ways you would identify a plant- without looking at the obvious, colour, shape, size, nuts, berries, flowers, leaves... be creative, and consider all your options.”
This should make for some interesting discussion. Seren smirked as she took another sip of tea. “And have fun with this... I want to be surprised and intrigued.”
She flicked her wand to the blackboard for the last time... a set of instructions appeared beneath their notes. Quote:

2. You need a minimum of 3 ideas per group.
3. Document these ideas and submit to me (Professor Bentley) at the end of the lesson.
4. Once you are content with your ideas, and have finished chatting, eating and drinking, you may be dismissed.
Good luck for your finals. Hope to see you next year.
& Congratulations to those of you who are leaving us, all the best for your future endeavours. OOC: At the end of your group discussion/ end of the lesson, could 1 member from each group please PM me the character names, and user ID# of each member along with the links to everyone’s post. Failure to do this will result in you not receiving the points that you deserve. If you have any questions feel free to ask Bentley IC or myself OOC via PM. Thank you.
This activity will be open for approx 2 days, so don't feel as though you need to rush.

Just what someone like her needs. Aiden remains seated and waits in case if someone wants or most likely needs to team up with her.
Arms crossed and head lowered, Aiden tries to cram up her brain for some ideas. Herbology is definitely not her best subject! |

" That would be a good thing to do," Helena agreed with a nod. And the translation would be... stay away from the Chinese Chomping Cabbage and anything else that has teeth.
Ahh now they had to work in groups? Quote:

The girl approached the younger Slytherin and gave her a smile. " Hey. Do you want to be partners?"

Simon didn't know who to partner and decided to ask the Professor something. "Professor can I partner you, you seem to know all about what you want to do." She hadn't said that wasn't allowed.

"Yes well, of course I know what the task entails... but thats beside the point. I want to know your ideas." As scary and strange as they may be... knowing Simon they would be very interesting to say the least.
She gave him a small smile. "I'll be here if you need me, but you need to form a group with your peers." And she clearly was not his peer.

"Professor I don't think anyone will want to partner me, apparently I don't know anything at all and are rubbish at Herbology and so they don't want to carry someone like me." Simon sighed.
