Library Reference Desk

A large desk sits near the entrance of the library. This is where the librarian, Madam Donovan, usually sits, keeping an eye out over her domain, and its prominent placement makes it clear that students are welcome to approach her if they require assistance. You won't necessarily have to ask for help, however; a large tome on a nearby stand, full of extensive records of past teachers, prefects, awards, champions, and all kinds of events of the long history of Hogwarts, is often the first - and easiest - way to look for information. Feel free to consult it, but be mindful of its age. This book may not be removed from the library unless under the specific instruction from the librarian.

A further large collection of shelves, not unlike the others around the library, stretches out behind the librarian's desk. The books it holds make up the library reference section. A complete inventory of all the books in the library, they are not to be taken out of the room, but you are welcome to use them in here.

Remember, the librarian is nearby if you need help.

Charlie approached the reference and saw the librarian nearby. "Excuse me," she said quietly, not wanting to disturb anyone who was reading. "Could you help me find something please?" she asked politely.

Liisa 05-14-2011 12:13 PM

Madam Donovan closed her book, leaving her finger inside to keep her place, and looked up from her seated position. "Well, that depends on what it is," she answered with a half-smile.

Zara was in the library, using up her free time to do her homework in Ancient Runes. Admitting defeat in searching for the right book, she approached the desk and smiled at Madam Donovan, their Head Of House. "Good day, Madam Donovan," she greeted as she nodded her head a little. "I'm Zara, Danielle Zara Griffiths; a first year this term. I was hoping if you could help me find a book. Anything about runes, just about anything which can help me translate words into runes." She smiled hopefully at the librarian.

Charlie said to the girl who just walked by and the librarian,
"That's what I'm looking for too..Is it Spellman's Syllabary that does that?" she smiled. "Are you looking for it for Runes homework too?" she asked the girl.

Zara peered over her shoulder as she waited for Madam Donovan to respond to her. She saw another girl who was looking for the same thing. Zara smiled and said, "Well, I really don't know the title of the book at all. Anything that could help me with the Ancient Runes homework would do. Yeah, I'm looking for it for the homework too." She smiled. "You wanna do it together?" Zara offered, seeing as it would be a nice idea to have someone to study with or do things with. Oh! She hasn't introduced herself yet. Where were her manners? "Oh! I'm sorry. My name is Zara by the way. Danielle Zara Griffiths. I am terribly sorry for not introducing myself earlier." She apologized, smiling sheepishly.

Charlie grinned, happy that somebody else was in the same position.
"Sure," she said, "It'll be a lot easier if we work together."
"It's cool," she added, seeing that Zara was apologising. "I'm Charlie..Rimsworth." she said God she couldn't wait to get married and get rid of her surname.

Hmmm...where was that woman? Chad had searched every row of this darn place for her and had had noo luck. Maybe she was at the desk? He approached her little work area cautiously.

She was!

"Oi, Donovan!"

Madam Donovan watched on as the two girls got to know one another. When it seemed like they were finished chit-chatting, she cleared her throat to speak. "You'll find Ancient Runes books in the Language section of the Library. Spellman's Syllabary is there, along with Ancient Runes Made Easy. I'd start there first," she said, pointing them in the right direction.

She was considering taking the girls over herself when someone called out her name....

Kimber glared - though it did little to hide her smile - and held a single finger up to her lips. "Shhhh, Chad! I've told you before. The children are here to study," she said, walking out from behind her desk.

When she was standing in front of him, she shook her head and pulled on his sleeve. "Besides, if you want something, I can hear you fine over here," she smirked, giving him a tug towards the other side of her desk.

Making his way to the reference desk, Simon wondered if Madam Donovan was even available at the moment though her presence was clear once he neared as well as the form of the groundskeeper. The scene he witnessed made him pause and raise an eyebrow slightly, relaxing his expression when he realised how it may have looked to show his amusement as the librarian pulled the man behind the desk by his sleeve.

"Um...perhaps I should come back, " he mused about to turn around and leave.

"Yes, yes," he waved off as she pulled him behind her desk. "And if you have told me once, then you have told me a thousand times that the students are studying. Frankly, Madame Donovan, if I have not learned the first thousand times you have tried to scold me, then I feel that it is safe to say that I will continue to be loud in your library." Waaaaaaaaaaaaay too quiet in this place.

Before she could, Chad quickly plopped his butt into HER seat and made himself real comfortable, really quickly.

"Noooooo, stay! Come, come." Chad waved for the boy to approach. "What can Madame Donovan help you find today," he asked, folding his hands together and putting a serious look on his face.

And, yeah. Madame Donovan. Chad would be lookin' for squat. Not like he'd be able to find stuff anyway. He was the dirt guy. She was the book woman. Rather logical, really.

Charlie appreciated the help from the librarian, seeing as she didn't really know where everything is. "Thank you," she said smiling as she went to walk in the direction that Madam Donovan pointed in. Then she remembered that she still had Quidditch Through The Ages in her hand. "Em- where do I check this book out?" she asked politely. She couldn't wait to read it properly, probably outside in the bright autumn setting.

Kimber turned around from her spot behind the desk and tilted her head at him. "You know... you look AWFULLY good there, sitting in my chair. Maybe I should let you take over for the day." The Lake would serve as a good place to spend her unexpected day off. It was particularly lovely this time of year.

...

Donning a smile, she turned back to Simon, still shaking her head slightly. "What can I help you with, dear?" she asked, then added, "Just ignore him." Excellent advice. (even if she couldn't follow it herself) Heh.

Even though distracted, Kimber could still perform her job duties flawlessly. "Right here, dear," she said, taking the book from her hand. Opening it to the first page, she tapped it briskly with her wand and then handed it back. "There. Due back in three weeks."

"Thanks," Charlie grinned and picked up the book. She laughed slightly at the man who was acting like a pest...Chad was it? She smiled and left the library.

Simon stopped his retreat when first the groundskeeper and then Madam Donovan herself called him back. "Nothing today, I think I'm set," he assured the man seeing as his purpose wasn't necessarily for the librarian's assistance of him but the other way around. As the seventh year waited for his turn again allowing the younger girl to ask for help, he tried not to chcukle at the banter between the two adults finally stepping forward once again to speak.

"Not so much you helping me but me helping you," Simon said at first before realizing she might not understand so he started again. "What I mean is my class load isn't too heavy being a seventh year and I already planned on spending quite a bit of time in the library to study for NEWT's which may or may not even take place. So I figured I'd ask if you would be interested in some help occasionally."

"IT IS too nerve racking, Madame," he nodded. SEE? She was getting it! They were on the same page! How cute. "I am glad that you finally see things my way."

Chad returned the student's smile. Nice kid. Took he hadn't gotten a chance to actually speak to her.

Chad was about to try and spin around in her chair when she seemed to turn to him again. Wait. What? "Let me take over? While you go out and have fun without me? I am afraid that I cannot allow that to happen, Madame Donovan," he shook his head.

"Quick kids, tackle her! She must not be allowed to leave the library!" Chad jumped from her chair in a pretend-pounce. It turned out to just be a hug. Everyone needs hugs.

"Excuse me," Tayla began. She put a copy of Magical Drafts and Potions by Arsenius Jigger on the counter and stared up nervously at the librarian. "I'd like to borrow this book, please. For my Potions assignment..."

GrapehSarah 05-23-2011 03:24 AM

Fallon felt really awkward doing this. She wasn't even sure if the library had a lot of muggle books. She'd never really looked for herself, but she didn't want to spend all day trying to figure it out. She walked over to the reference desk hoping to speak to Madam Donovan. When she got there, she spotted Mr. Stryker embracing her in a hug.

It took everything in Fallon's power not to giggle. "Um...excuse me." She said suppressing giggles. "I wanted to ask you a question Madam Donovan. I can come back later if you're busy though." She of course was referencing Mr. Stryker of course. Her giggles were threatening to burst out any moment.

momentai 05-23-2011 08:11 PM

Chad didn't let go of his hug. "No no, it is okay. Go ahead and ask Madame Donovan your question. I am more than certain that she can multitask! Hug and save the day, one book at a time." Squish.

Holmesian Feline 05-23-2011 08:17 PM

Simon couldn't help but chuckle amused as the grounds keeper hugged Madam Donovan in an attempt to keep her from leaving the library. Not like it wasn't all a joke between the two of them and the seventh year was sure the librarian was full teasing just as Stryker was. He glanced over as two more students come up to ask assistance and the Gryffindor smiled and stepped off to one side once more. His question wasn't so pressing and he was sure it could wait.

Kimber considered the question for all of maybe a whole nanosecond when she nodded her head excitedly at Simon and said, "Heck yes, Simon! I was hoping someone would be willing to help this term." She didn't say WHY the news came as such a relief but it was clear she was planning on being more busy this year.

"You can start right now if you'd like." Surely he would, right? That WAS why he was here.

"I heard that," he said LOUDLY, looking through her papers now.

"Are you here to distract me or drive me crazy?" she asked, tilting her head to the side?

Just then she heard a muffled SECRET sound coming from her office. Her eyes narrowed and her glare intensified. "And now you've ruined the surprise!" she pouted, turning back towards Simon for his answer.

Madam Donovan was just about to correct Chad, to tell him she couldn't POSSIBLY have fun without him, *wink* when she was suddenly trapped inside his arms, unable to move. "CHAD!" she shouted, breaking her own rule. "You are SO asking to be thrown into the Lake right now."

The seventh year certainly wasn't about to step on the librarian's toes in the process of attempting to help her.

At his teasing, Kimber looked up at Chad with exasperated eyes. "Well I just don't know if you even deserve a surprise now..." she said with her pouty expression. But he had at least let her go.

Hearing the same sound as before, she smiled up him. "I'll be right back." And with that, she moved out from behind the desk and disappeared into her office.

Simon raised a slight eyebrow at the instructions he had been given before nodding to show acceptance. "Um..sure," he said not wanting to show too much enthusiasm seeing as he was being allowed where normally only she or other staff like the man beside her stood. As she moved out from behind the desk, he walked behind it, watching the librarian disappear for a moment before turning back to hesitantly face the students still waiting.

"You were saying....? "
