The History of Magic Classroom has changed alot since the first lesson! It has been charmed to look like the deck of an old pirate ship. There are still walls of course but the setting of everything in the room looks like the front of a ship. You can hear the ocean and birds just like if we were sailing away. There is even an occasional burst of wind that livens up the room a little bit. Nothing too crazy, but just enough that you swear you can hear the sails billowing above you. It is very magical and exciting.
There are still desks scattered around the ship's deck. Feel free to sit wherever you would like.
The professor has written a message on the board that is enchanted to scribble out in a messy but readable handwriting and stay for a few minutes and then erase and start again:
Quote:
ARGGG!!!
Ahoy t' Lesson Two: A Pirate's Life fer me!
Captain Gemma Cerulean
The Professor can be found at the door shaking everyone's hands as they enter the door dressed in her Pirate outfit. As you enter she greets you with a firm handshake or a pat on the bag and a hardy, "ARGGGG Matey!"
SPOILER!!: Gemma in Pirate Garb...haha...
OOC: Once again I'm sorry for the delayed start...yesterday our internet went down and I just couldn't force myself to post a new class from my phone...AHHHH!!!....so here we go!....
Please come in and have a seat. You may chat but keep it to a minimum. Remember that when class starts, you need to cut out chatting. Also don't post yourself coming in late, Gemma hates late arrivals and will not give you a warning, she will deduct points from the first time you are late.
I'm going to give you a few hours to get settled so I'll see you a in a little while!!! *huggles you all*

"Can anyone think of another example of either pirates encountering magical creatures or examples proving that a pirate was a wizard?" she asked. She knew this would have to make some of them think.
OOC: Have fun thinking of answers for this one. You can mention anything that could be interpreted as magic. Think about movies and crazy legends that you might have read about or seen. You can say that any of the pirates were wizards as long as you have a creative answer to back it up. Remember Gemma is watching so not chatting. Have fun!
Riley was the same boat as alot of the students sitting in the class at the moment. He didn't recognize any of the names on the board being raised by his pureblood mother. His father had been out of the picture and there was no time for him to be read Pirate stories. But naturally he had heard enough of the basic things to function just not recall names.
The Gryffindor raised his hand to answer her question. "Professor, wasn't it a common occurance for Captians or even just crew members to be marooned on deserted islands here and now? Some pirates could have been wizards and simply Apparated off the island once their ship was out of site, going to a Port anywhere in the world?" Yeah that's right he did NOT do a pirate accent.
The professor smiled and as the students started listing the pirates, their individual pirate names disappeared on the board and were replaced with the list of Historical and Fictional Pirates in history.

Isabelle thought about this question. Her sister Gabrielle loved to go see Muggle movies. Especially when she was visiting the US. Gabii said that they had the best movies that looked and sounded even better in English then French. Gabii was telling me about one where the guy always seemed to escape, Pirates of the Caribbean. That does seem suspicious. What was his name? Cardinal? No, Sparrow, Jack Sparrow.
Isabelle raised her hand. "Professor, my sister told me about a movie where the pirate always seemed to escape in the craziest situations that should seem inpossible. It was Pirates of the Caribbean. She also said that there were some people who had magical like properties. One crew of people were skeletons in the moonlight because of some curse on medallions. I think that sounds like magic." Wow she just said so much. Hopefully she wasn't sounding to confusing.
Gemma shook her head at each answer. "Wow, ya'll came up with answers that I hadn't even thought of! From pixies to talking parrots to sirens to the kracken to a magical sword....great thinking...one point for each of your answers!" she said excitedly.
"Now let's link these pirates a little closer to home. Have any of you had the opportunity to see or ever heard about the pirate ship that the Durmstrong students travel in?" she said more as statement and not a question. "It is a magnificent sight to see and it is very historical. I once had the opportunity to come aboard the ship and investigate some old historical documents found in a floorboard panel...excellent workmanship. There is a legend that it has been at Durmstrong since it was founded and that it was once captained by none other than Davvy Jones, which someone mentioned earlier. This ship is said to be the cousin ship to the mysterious Flying Dutchman that is in many of the muggle stories." she paused and then continued, "It was said to be crewed by a scary crew that would ship souls to the devil....No one really knows if that is truly the story behind the Durmstrong ship, but it does make a great legend to go along with it."
She paused and then continued, "Pirates have even been linked to our lake in the past. There is a legend of a ship captained by Barnabus the Bloody that was last seen entering the area just on the other side of our lake where muggles used to dwell. Not much is known about the ship, but it does make you wonder where the ship went and why it was so close to our lake and if certain legends surrounding the ship were true." she paused thinking about this too and then went on, "I'll have to go investigate that further in the library actually....surely there must be something in all of those books..."
Realizing that she was rambling again she smiled, "Now being in a crew on a pirate ship was much like being in your individual houses. There was lots of loyalty among the crew and many crews would band together at times to create vast pirate fleets to conquer different trials or tribulations." she nodded slightly up and down, "It is believed that most pirates were magical, or had magical crew members, and so that was what made it very difficult for them to lose in battle."
"Each pirate ship and crew flew a special flag that represented their ship. This flag was flown at all times to show their pride of their ship and to warn others of impending doom if they were to cross the so-called magical beings." she flicked her wand and the Jolly Roger flag appeared on the board. It was almost an animated drawing because the flag looked to be flapping in the wind. "This is the Jolly Roger, the most notorious flag, that is most well-known for being linked to the pirates." she flicked her wand and flags dropped from the ceiling above them hanging from the rafters and dangling down towards the students flapping in the imaginery wind as well, "These (OOC: look under Jolly Roger gallery) are an example of some of the other flags linked to pirate vessels and crews. "
She let the students look at the flags for a while, "What are some of the common characteristics of the flags? Please remember to only give one answer so that others may have a chance."
"They all seem to have... connotations with death. Like, the skeletons..." Danielle said after she had raised her hand and looked towards the Professor again- the flags were rather grim for her liking to be honest, she wasn't fond of that sort of stuff. Growing up with brothers, chasing you round the garden pretending to be pirates was never fun. Neve- and pirates just creeped her out for some reason.

Sitting up straighter in his chair, pushing his pirate pants so he could be less puffy, Riley was beginning to be more interested in this pirate business. He did like stories and legends. Then she flicked her wand and flags fell out of the ceiling. This was cool.
Looking at each one and noticing the grotesque nature of them all Riley raised his hand. "They are all colors like black, red, and white signifying violence Professor." He had heard that they could be vile and cruel. The Davvy Jones ship sounded like they definately were.

Oh, talking about flags now. This seemed more interesting.
"There's a skull on almost every flag, and a couple of bones or swords," probably trying to scare the others. This was one of the things Helena couldn't understand. Why they were supposed to be scared, that is. "And the flags are usually dark." Black. Or maybe a bloody-red. Again, most probably trying to intimidate the enemies with those silly flags.

Huuh, Durmstrang had a ship that pirates used? What?
Making a tiny note in her notebook to look up something, and also making a mental note to pay attention to the lesson, Evelyn glanced up to the flags once they were shown. Skeletons. Awesome. Though, that was it? "They're all rather simple." she muttered, staring at the particularly red flag with the skeleton on it. Seriously, since these people were all awesome apparently, they could've had better designs on their flags.
Well, she could always cheat off the Ravenclaw again...
...or not. Ewww, was he drooling?! ...and staring at her?! She gave the Ravenclaw a slight look--he looked like a flobberworm right now. "What?!" she hissed at him, her eyes looking toward the professor to make sure she wasn't looking. Then a question was asked, and the flobberworm looked away.
Eww. See if she ever cheated off a Ravenclaw again. They had odd reactions to it, it seemed...
Ugh. So now she had to come up with an answer on her own, and she had nothing. Blahhh. "Well, it's obvious that the pirates with lots of gold are also wizards," she said, raising her hand in the air. She lowered it before adding, "There's no way any Muggle can get away with stealing that much money." She paused and eyed the Ravenclaw boy again. Was he...alright?"Anyway, so maybe they're using Summoning Charms or Disillusionment Charms."
Riiiight. She'd pretty much gone on and on about nothing, hoping there'd be answer in there somewhere.
Eino flinched when she addressed him with her sweet and angelic hiss. He turned away from her, wiped his mouth with his sleeve, and faced the professor. He tried to focus his attention on the lesson but every once in a while he wanted to catch a glimpse of that majestic beauty, Aphrodite herself, Sierra. How come he had never seen her before? Where had she been all his life? She was perfect! Beautiful, smart, and beautiful. At the end of her magnificent answer he began to applaud her, but a few claps in he realized he was the only one doing it. He gulped, tucked his hands in his pockets, and lowered his head until the Professor began to speak again.
Eino raised his hand. "They all seem to signify danger." They were all black and white and red with imagines of skulls, swords, and skeletons which were all related to death. "At first I thought it was strange for them to openly expose themselves. For example, if another ship saw them from far away they would have a chance to evade them and escape danger. So I suppose the point of the flags were to inflict fear above anything else." He had heard that pirates were much like terrorists. Meaning that sometimes they wouldn't even want the gold, just to terrorize others.

Samira shivered as she looked at the flags. This was...creepy. Samira slowly raised her hand. "Professor, all the flags have either skulls or swords, indicating violence and death." Oooh this was freaking her out!
Her eyes may have lit up a bit when she recognized the voice that was suddenly next to her. She flashed him a smile, as well. Ellie was in a better mood now.
"Ugh, it's horrible isn't it," she said, pushing the parchment to the corner of her desk farthest from Treyen. "Don't make a habit of calling me that." Seriously. As in never again.
Oh, and the last comment got a LOOK. "Shhhh." Hehe.
Treyen actually chuckled, and wink, "I can't promise that," because Ethel was completely amusing not to make fun of it.
It's not like he was going to keep on talking, after all, they were in class, so, he had no other choice but to shush from real, but not because Ellie said so, no.

At the simplicity comment made by Evelyn, Treyen raised his hand, eyes on the Professor, "Their message was clear, you probably knew what to expect if you got near them," he said, nodding, "The simple arrangements may have something to do with identifying the ship from great distance," and give some the time to run away or prepare the cannons.
Simon looked at the Professor. "They look scary, they want the People to be scared of them and as such if they see them they panic and then the pirates take control of the situation before the others can get themself organised." Simon smiled that was what he thought anyway.

Alfie listened curiously as the Professor explained things and the connections pirates might've once had to Durmstrang's own ship. Her blonde eyebrows rose slightly at the story, completely amazed by the potential background of one ship. It was then that the Professor continued on, beginning to discuss flags and showing them a few examples as they hung from the rafters.
Alfie glanced at all of these examples, a bit of a grimace coming to her expression at certain ones, and listened as the Professor asked for some distinguishing characteristics. "Well..." began Alfie with a raise of her hand, staring at one flag in particular. "There's that one with a captain...holding an hourglass..alongside a skeleton which could represent..death?" she suggested, evaluating the flag curiously. "I guess that could mean... If you cross the ship, you were bound to die as the captain and death had it in for you and it was only a matter of time?" She gave a shrug, "I guess they're all pretty threatening."

Those flags were...really creepy, to put it quite simply. No wonder people usually tried to stay away from pirates. Who wanted to be around people who designed creepy things like that?
But anyway, on to the question.
Vashti raised a hand. "Several of them have two of a certain object, mainly the two crossed bones and swords. Obviously those could stand for violence and death to scare away other ships, but I think it could also stand for the unity and loyalty within the ship's crew and those times when several different pirate ships would band together. I mean, they could've just put one bone or sword on there and the threat of death would still come through, but instead there are two, as if they knew they couldn't do all those things that they did on their own and wanted to show that."

Fallon was glad that she'd spoken up. She could us more house points. It was nice to actually participate in an interesting lesson. She listened as Cerulean explained various piratey things. It was very interesting actually. She was actually learning a lot in HoM for once. It was a strange feeling.
Hmm. Another question. Fallon looked up at all of the flags and took in the details before raising her hand to answer. "Well, as mentioned, there are skulls or some sort of bones on all of them. And I think the darker colors a way to show the danger or give warning to those coming for the ship." It would make sense. No one wanted to mess with someone with a black flag with skulls on it.

Olivia raised her hand. "They all have something to do with death, and usually in a ruthless way, like the one with the skeleton with a heart on it's sword. I guess it meant that there would be no prisoners and that if you came across a pirate ship, it would be total war and complete, lawless slaughter without any honor." Pirates were nice and romanticized as a legend, but as a reality, Olivia was disgusted by them. They were murderers, thieves, conquerors, pillagers, and violators all at once.

Kurumi raised her hand. "I would just like to point out that not ALL Jolly Rogers had skulls on them. Some used hourglasses which was another symbol of death," she explained just wanting to break the stereotype. Anyone else guess what they were probably doing for homework? Kurumi had an inkling that since they had come up with their own pirate names and were not discussing flags that they were going to be making their own Jolly Roger.
Kurumi turned to Eino to see if he agreed, but he was still a little more than simply preoccupied with looking at Sierra. This could get reaaaaaally awkward.
She turned her attention back to the front. "All flags do have something that will strike fear into those who see it fly. Anything that represents death could be used I suppose."

Macy stared at the flags, resting her head in her hand. Hmm.
Well they all had something to do with skulls, and they were all kinda mean looking. Maybe to scare off the other ships? Maybe not to scare them off, buuut... "They're all trying to portray dominance. Sort of to scare the other ships away," Macy answered, raising her hand. Dang. She forgot her pirate talk again.

Sierra eyed the professor. Then she eyed the flags. Then she eyed the Ravenclaw that kept staring at her. For some reason, this whole pirate lesson still made her a little uneasy, so she shifted in her seat and then focused on the lesson.
"They all seem to be pretty much focused on death," she pointed out, her hand raised. Maybe they felt the need to constantly defend themselves? Could be true, what with all the stealing pirates were so commonly linked to. She guessed she'd get a little upset, too, if someone tried to steal all her gold. Err, galleons. Whatever.

At the sound of someone clapping, Sierra glanced cautiously to the side of her. Then she blinked. Was that Ravenclaw boy...clapping for her answer?! Oh, Merlin. He was. First the drooling and now the random clapping.
...were all Ravenclaws like this when someone cheated off them?!
She looked at the boy for a few extra seconds, blushed ever-so-slightly, and then looked slooooowly away.
She let the students look at the flags for a while, "What are some of the common characteristitics of the flags? Please remember to only give one answer so that others may have a chance."
Hannah raised her hand it has to do with skulls and cross bones or death.
Treyen actually chuckled, and wink, "I can't promise that," because Ethel was completely amusing not to make fun of it.
It's not like he was going to keep on talking, after all, they were in class, so, he had no other choice but to shush from real, but not because Ellie said so, no.
And what was that look for?
He still had to ask her what that bat at the game had been for. Surely, she took the 'Take out the Seeker' rule at heart.
GLARES is what Treyen got. He would NOT call her 'Ethel'. Seriously.

Ellie really didn't have much to offer to this class. She didn't know anything about Pirates. Nor, did she really care to learn about them, thanks to Jacob.
THIS, however, she could answer, "They're all death-y. Skulls and bones and...blood." Not very pretty at all. They should be purple or something. With broomsticks and such.
These pirates were terrible wizards.

Raising Her Hand Isabella said , " Professor Most Of The Flags Have skulls on them So It Would Scare The Victims Into Surrending without fighting one another . " She said . " It Is Like A Symbol Of death . "Finishing her answer Isabella Didn't Mean To add the last part but if It Made her sound Smarter Then It Was Fine .
Ariella thought for a few minutes about her answer. Everyone seemed to be answering the same thing, so she had to think of something different. Hmm.....
Her hand shot up into the air moments later. "As mentioned, most of the flags had an image of skull-and-crossbones or hourglasses. Most 'bad' pirates would use the flag to warn others of their ferocity and toughness." She paused for a moment. "Pirates didn't fly the Jolly Roger at all times. In fact, they usually had several different flags that meant different things. Once they sensed that the enemy was near, the flag might be raised to warn the enemy of danger."
Gemma shook her head at each answer. "Wow, ya'll came up with answers that I hadn't even thought of! From pixies to talking parrots to sirens to the kracken to a magical sword....great thinking...one point for each of your answers!" she said excitedly.

Isabelle looked at all of the pictures. Ugh, skull and crossbone. She wasn't sure if she wanted to see pirate movies, even though Gabii said it was amazing.
Isa raised her hand. "Lots of them have a skull and cross bone." Though besides the creepy pirate stuff, it was quite an interesting lesson. She wanted to read up on the supposed mysterious of the Durmstrang ship. She should ask her brother, he goes to Durmstrang and might know about the ship.
William raised his hand. " Blackbeard used a different pirate flag except it did have the red, white and black colors" William told the professor. " He did have a skeleton in whitr who happmes to be holding a sword in one hand and what seems spear in the other hand both in white." William said to the professor. " The other part of the flag is in red where a heart is next to the spear and I am pretty sure it is a black background" Wiliam explained to the professor. " The one thing that was odd about Blackbeard is maybe his pirate f;ag showed violence, he never really harmed his captives or others" William smiled at the last part of that anser. " Not all pirates believed in violence like Blackbeard, right?" William asked the Captain/professor.
