Text Cut: Ideas so far

1.....Scrying with a map & crystal == would only give position of something (not the future, past or present)
2.....Using Astrology == charting past & present movements of planets & moons 'could' give indication of future
3.....Using Horoscope charts == Seeing into the future using star signs & their meanings
4.....Smoke == Not sure how this works
5.....burnt firewoods ==

"Maybe, it's future... Uhm, I don't really know..." Niss answered shyly.

Rose leaned across and introduced herself to Janice..."Hi i'm Rose, Gryffindor, first year..."..

Rose had been very quiet for a while, thinking.... then suddenly had a brain wave.."Can mirrors be used for Scrying?... I have a vision about some woman like a thousand year ago using a mirror to see the face of her future husband or something.."

I would imagine most serious Diviners wouldn’t use their crystal balls as paperweights, however. Not the ones they specifically use, as that could dim the orb’s power.” At least, that was her opinion. One didn’t usually use their wand for anything other than magical things, most of the time, and that should extend to other magical tools as well.

She turned and set the crystal ball in question back on her table, then returned her attention to the class in order to speak again. “Scrying, as so many of you have touched on,” whether or not they realized it, “is a method of using reflections, images, to gain insight into the past, present and future. of course, the reflections that one sees aren’t really there, but merely visions brought about through focus and reflected in the orb or whatever is used. Not only crystal balls can be used, in fact, for scrying. Does anyone want to suggest something else that could be used?” Eventually they would get to the actual activity she had planned, but touching on scrying was always in her plans. Everything was related when it came to Divination anyhow.

ooc: Moving things along . . . ;) Same rules apply as usual. (and those who replied to the first question all get one point)

Kimalia frowned hearing everyone's answers, she merely wrote down in her notes what seemed to be the plausible answer.

SPOILER!!: notes

Divination requires scrying, doesn't require a crystal ball but anything that has a reflection like say a mirror, water, glass screens, even floors (ones that are clean enough)

She then yawned, the room was very warm and causing her to feel drowsy. Ugh, so not sleeping in class. She shook her hand and turned her attention back to the Professor.

Whether, for example, you think it’s in fact possible for someone to think they see images that can predict things in a mirror. Work in your groups, come up with an argument either for or against and I’ll take a look after a little while. We can discuss your ideas again before moving along.” It could be dangerous, but she knew she could control them. And keep the possible pyromaniacs away from her crystal ball and lighting the curtains on fire or something.

ooc: I have work tomorrow, but I’ll be back after I get home again to check on you guys, continue things. So basically, you can have a character in your groups write the ideas down as you discuss them, or at least somehow keep track and we can have a little debate after I’m done with work again. I’ll try to continue things after a day, but at the latest I’ll move the lesson along after Weds. night when I’ll have time again. Try not to get too crazy, though, and I will definitely try to check in as often as I can. And this is not the official practical activity for the lesson. Just another fun way of having discussion. Points for participation are up for grabs though.

Kimalia looked around at the other paired up before sighing. Partnerless again, Kimalia smiled despite her disappointment and called out, "Anyone need a partner?"

Well, she couldn't actually remember the face to the name but she'd have to..uh, remember, she scribbled down each name with something memorable on her wrist, Rose, Becca, Niss, Penny she said, looking at them again. Oh yeah, I'm Amy, another Badger, she grinned at them all, before having a look at their notes.

They're good she grinned at them, whats the actual task though? So we keep to it, she'd forgotten how many times she'd began to ramble and forget about the task. Always good to check

Not again! Viola really didn't feel comfortable teaming up with others, for some reason. She kinda preferred working on her own. Now, she'll have to find someone to team up with. Bleh! She overheard someone saying something about Badgers and Lions. It sounded interesting and she decided to ask that girl if Viola could join her. Viola was a badger, after all. She walked up to that girl and said, "Hi. I'm Viola. Umm..can I join you guys?" Since, she noticed a few others seated nearby.

A discussion, hmm?

Sierra didn't have much to discuss, except for the fact that she still didn't believe this Divination stuff was real. She thought scrying was just a good way of saying people had pictured something so much and so often that they were imagining themselves seeing it in a crystal ball. Or in a fire, smoke, or body of water. Whatever.

She wrote this down on a piece of parchment before looking around the room to see if anyone was worth partnering up with.

Tayla furrowed her eyebrows. She wasn't sure what she meant exactly.

"About crystal balls?" The girl asked, a little bit confused. Well... besides the fact that they were shiny and Helena loved shiny things, "I guess we can see the most clear images in them. And mirrors." But Helena found mirrors a bit creepy, when it came to Divination. "I mean... imagine seeing some images" of the future? "in... the reflexion of a crystal." Or something like that. Hopefully, she'll understand what Helena's point was.

"What do you think?"

Fee smiled at the girl and twirled her quil in her hand."Nice to meet you too.",she said friendly.Oh Helena, that was a really pretty name.hehe.Maybe pairing up wasnt that bad after all.You never knew what it could lead to.hehe.

The Slytherin listened to her partner intensely and nodded here and there."I think crystal balls are the most effective method to scrype",the Slytherin said,"the possibilty that what you're gonna see in that ball is going to happen is higher than with anything."Ohh mirrors in divination? They were pretty scary, seriously."If i saw someone esle in the mirror as who was in a room with me i would run away screaming",she chuckled.

elllla_Wtwins 05-17-2011 04:08 PM

Hm.. Other things that could be used for scryping..

Teaspoons, perhaps? Ella wrote it down. Shhe wrote down an assortment of objects, including: glass dishes, glasses and bottles.

At least.. that's what she thought she was meant to do...

So... if Feenella was nodding, that meant that Helena's ideas weren't that bad, right? But... Divination was difficult. For Helena at least. And difficult to understand.

"You're right," she nodded in agreement, as Feenella was talking about the crystal ball. "But I'm curious why," she said, then stopped for a moment to think about it. "I mean... you can see the most clear images in a crystal ball because... ? It's crystal?" If that made any sense at all? Why weren't the images in the water the clearest ones? It was getting confusing.

"You're not the only one," Helena said, slightly blushing. Maybe she'd instantly have a heart attack if she saw someone in the mirror who wasn't supposed to be there. And THAT's why mirrors could be so creepy.

Lucy looked around to pair up with some one, she turned to her right and saw Helena, Lucy knew her, they always met in Divination class. Lucy went close to her and said "Hey Helena, how're you? can i join you too" saying that she grabbed a seat next to her.

She thought a little on Professors and said "hmm, i think we could use any smooth surface like a bowl of liquid or a pond or a crystal too, to do scrying, what do you think?" she asked Helena giving a sweet smile. She didn't actually knew why was she smiling but she just smiled at her.

Cassie thought for a moment. What was her take on it? Well she had several takes on divinition itself but that was for another day wasn't it? She tilted her head to the side as she looked at Jai before replying to his question.

"Well for starters, I suppose we can look at the similarities between the objects that are used in scrying. The mirror, the crystal ball and water for instance are all similar in that they reflect objects. They also require you to be still in order to properly focus on what is being reflected as well. Well really the object and the person observing have to be still to get any sort of scrying done." She shrugged, that was the first thing that came to her mind when she thought about it.

Slytherin's Talon 05-17-2011 07:27 PM

Talon smirked. A debate? All right, might as well. He didn't really like this subject, mainly because you couldn't really predict the future or see things in a ball. If you wanted to see something and you were looking in different angles, well then, you might see anything. But same thing with clouds, right? Would looking at the clouds and seeing shapes count as scrying? He wrote down notes on this and then glanced around the room to see if there was anybody who didn't have a partner.

Jai nodded as he too thought about it."Scrying is like seaching for something and using a reflection of an object would facilitate that. Of course, it would mean looking passed the reflection of yourself and further for whatever you wanna see. Like using the surface of perfectly still water. You'd have to look passed the reflection, passed whatever is beyond the surface of the water and into the whatever you're looking for." he added. Well, that was his understanding so far.

Using Astrology == charting past & present movements of planets & moons 'could' give indication of future

OOC: sorry for all the quotes ^__^;;

Who wants to write everything down?" William asked the girls. William raised his hand. "You can use a mieeor for better reflection in scrying." William esplained to the professor.

Beth turned her head to the left and saw a boy. "Yeah, thanks." She agreed, blushing slightly. She always blushed when people she didn't know talked to her. She was just that sort of person, shyish really. "I'm Beth Lourie, short for Bethany by the way, not Elizabeth. I'm in third year, Ravenclaw. To be honest I wasn't paying a whole amount of attention so maybe you could fill me in?" She asked hopefully.

Kyle looked over around her table, and nervously looked around. She was, and truly felt a little bit 'out of place' right now. It wasn't that she didn't want to talk with people but it was, she was still quite shocked by what her own cousin had said...that was - was inexcusable the only way she could have known that would have been reading her diary, or - or eavesdropping.

Clearing her throat, she spoke softly. "Soooo" the elongated and awkward 'so' was so extremely awkward. Gulp. "Um, do any of you guys want to partner up or do you want to - er - talk as a group?" She asked eyes wide with shock still.

Glancing over to Simon she suddenly broke out into a fit of awkward laughter. "Sorry about earlier - I-I don't know where she got that from" she tried to be less awkward but that was hard when people assumed you were dating someone you just so happened to think was nice - and quite possibly liked.

Zara nodded and said, "Hi." Guess that was it for conversation.

"Thank you," she politely replied with a smile. Zara nodded as Kyle introduced her cousin. But they've already met before. Hannah, the girl with tattoos. Eep. Hihi. Then Caroline and Simon. Zara nodded again as she smiled to each one of them.

"Oh, that's good," she smiled back to Hannah and nodded.

"Nice to meet you too," she replied. Then likewise, she also took out her parchment and ink and quills.

With this, Zara turned to face the rest of the people at her table and smiled. "Any ideas? I could probably write them down if you want."

"We can work together as a group. Would make sense the way the tables were laid out and Zara already volunteered to take notes," Simon replied glancing momentarily at the younger girl in question. His attention drawn back to Kyle as he heard her laughter.

"Its...alright. No harm done," he assured her even though deep down what had happened had raised questions for him. The Gryffindor pushed it aside to try and concentrate on actual classwork. "How about the fact that whatever medium is used that it has to be clear to avoid distraction or an error in reading because you think something is there in the scrying when its not, its on the surface being used..." His attention now on the group as a whole as he spoke and waited for the rest of the discussion.
