Kana tapped her quill against her teeth for a moment. She'd been close to the previous answers, but she'd heard a riddle like this before and quickly raised her hand. "A secret?", she guessed, even though she was certain. Of course, she didn't want to sound rude if she was wrong. Even though she'd already answered, she kept thinking. Thinkthink. |
Seriously? Another riddle? Eh, she didn't want to sit around trying to answer riddles all day, and to watch the Professor hand out chocolate. Shouldn't the teachers be giving healthier things? Like fruits? Even Hadley gave mints. This next riddle though, Evelyn didn't even want to try and think about it, however, her brain didn't allow her to do that. When one does not know what it is...then it is something. Kinda sounded like a secret. But when one knows what it is, then it is nothing. Well, a secret kinda loses it's whole fun factor when it's told. Actually...then it's just a burden for both people so that's not nothing. Aaand...someone just blurted that out. Great. Gotta come up with a new answer. "The unknown." she said suddenly. Hmm, wait...what? "Because it's kinda a mystery if no one knows what it is, so it's obviously something, but then it's nothing if...you already know what it is. It's not a big deal." Right? "Kinda defeats the 'unknown' part of it." |
"A POGREBIN!" Eino shouted with his hand in the air and a grin on his face. It could be nothing else but a pogrebin he was certain. "If you know what it is, then you don't have to fear it because pogrebins thrive on the fact that people think they are simple rocks so that they grow weary and attack them!" He was talking so fast he took a break to take a deep breath then continued. "So, if you know they are pogrebins it's nothing, but if you don't then it's something because you are in danger!" Maybe the professor was going to bring progrebins out next? Oh, that would be simply wonderful! |

*points at last answer* I CAN'T COUNT! OOOH! More Candy! Jacob then raise his hand...but he first had to swallow all the food in his own mouth, before he started his answer. "That would be food. Cause when you don't know that its edible, it's there. But when you know it can be eaten, its already in your tummy... as it slowly digests into nothingness." Cause FOOD is the answer to ALL! And ALL is FOOD! |
Kurumi was reminded of that one Shakespeare quote of "to be or not to be, that is the question" when the sphinx asked her next riddle. There certainly were many things that the riddle could be referring to, although she had to admit that the answer of a secret was the first thing that came to her head, she picked her brain for something else that others had not already offered up. "It is an answer?" she asked with her hand raised. That seemed rather ironic come to think of it. "When we do not know the answer to something, we put much more value on it than when we do already know the answer." That made sense, right? |
Eyes blinking owlishly, Ivory took a pause from note taking and smiled at last. She'd been in such awe when the class had started that she'd been taking notes ever since, even going as far as describing the Sphinx in great detail and trying to sketch her. Listening attentively, she also jotted down the riddles. This was by far, a great class. All at once the Ravenclaw prefect had found she had a great respect for their new professor. Not only was he on good terms with a Sphinx but what he had to go through to get permission to get her here was most likely very impressive. And of course, her respect extended to the magnificent creature at his side. Putting her quill down as she realized she'd taken enough notes, the Ravenclaw prefect raised a slim hand in participation her mind whirling when someone replied a riddle. Gosh, that had been her first thought. Following her train of thought, she gave it a go since her hand was already up. "A surprise?" she mused aloud. Clearing her throat for a second, she continued with a hesitant smile. "Because when something is considered a surprise then it surprises us, however once it is known it's no longer a surprise." |
WHAT was with all these riddles? Wasn't the point of this class to study the sphinx and talk about how awesome it was? Surely it was not to sit here being patronized by a teenaged sphinx who already thought it was better than all of them combined. He raised his hand. "Is it the unknown?" he asked. A secret, the unknown, a surprise, they all could have been the right answer. He didn't care. His biggest concern was still being eaten. |

"Chocolate Frog it is," answered Lu to herself, promptly doing aside with the wrapping. "Thanks, MacFussy," mumbled the girl around the bitten head of the frog. "Not bad." His lesson and him but she wasn't the type to clarify things, especially compliments. Quote:

catching up! i missed so much. be back later-has school Heather had remained silent for the entire time Lady Rosamund was giving riddles. she was quite embarrassed and afraid to say anything any more when the Sphinx answered her earlier question, to which she did not really mean to ask it out loud, and the Sphinx looked and sounded rather unamused at her. That does it, she's afraid. But, wait, what are these? Professor Lachlan is giving treats! TREATS! on the next riddle, this gave her encouragement to answer. what was that riddle again? When one does not know what it is, then it is something; but when one knows what it is, then it is nothing. WHAT.IS.THAT? This is such a tricky riddle...something you'd really want to know...if only she knew the answer...it's going to be no problem..nothing to worry- wait a second. Heather nervously smiled. Did she just get the question? She raised her hand timidly; she was still nervous to speak about. "i-is i-it a..a riddle? Uhm...R-riddles a-are something t-to think a-about when you don't know t-the answer...and s-since you don't know t-the answer, y-you often w-would find y-yourself t-thinking about it, t-trying to know w-what that something, or the a-answer is. But...if you do know the answer...t-then you d-don't t-think a-about it too much, because i-it's nothing since it's that easy to answer, and when it is...the e-essence of t-the riddle a-as a mystery is lost and be-becomes nothing." Good job explaining, Heather, but did anyone even understand you? She sighed wearily as she finished her statement. |
"The answer to this riddle?" She said uncertainly. Quite frankly she didn't care if she was even close. She just wanted a chocolate frog. |

Belle knew this riddle because her dad used to tell her this all the time back home, Belle knew what is was and wrote it down on her parchement. "Of course it is a secret!" she thought happily to herself. Belle's Parchment Quote:

"Could it be the Philosophers Stone? When you want to find it, it just appears as a regular stone. When you don't really look for it and find it, it appears as a red or golden stone." This was his best guess that nobody had said. And, to him atleast, it sounded like a good answer. "I hat riddles...." Benjamin had quietly said to himself. "Like alot. They're pretty much pointless...." |

Isobel thought about the next riddle. When one does not know what it is, then it is something; but when one knows what it is, then it is nothing. First of all, the language was confusing. Isobel tried to translate it in to something she would understand. What did no one know, and loose its value when it was known? The first thing that popped in to her head was a secret. It certainly made sense. She raised her hand. "Is it a secret Lady Rosamund?" She asked. "When a secret is unknown it is a secret. But when it is known, it is not a secret anymore." That made sense to her, hopefully it would make sense to the pretty sphinx too. |

Soon a couple of other students joined in with the same answer, though one of more or less stuttered their way through their response. "You are all correct." And technically, the rest of them, too, but it was her Riddle, and while their answers were entirely plausible, too, Rosamund was ignoring those. Lachlan scratched the back of his head at Rosamund's words, and couldn't help but to raise an eyebrow. His own, private answer had been 'secret,' and that in his own mind made a lot of sense. He was not about to get in the middle of an argument with a sphinx, however, and instead walked to the middle of the group of students and placed both boxes, filled with cauldron cakes and chocolate frogs, in the middle. "Help yourselves with these." He... didn't like sweets. Best to give them to the kids than to have to throw them all out. "After you do, you are free to go. Homework will be posted later today." MacFusty cleared his throat, and took several steps back until he was standing next to his stool. "Class dismissed!" OOC: Homework will be posted later tonight. Really. ^__^ Thanks for playing along, folks! |
SPOILER!!: Professor Selina smiled at the answer to her answer. Although she was not right in her answer to the riddle both the Professor and Rosamund seemed to think it a valid point. Her Professor then went to the floor and picked up a box of chocolate frogs and cauldron cakes. As he asked her which she wanted the answer came so easily to Selina, "Caludron cake, sir." After her experience with chocolate frogs last term in Charms, Selina was good in the chocolate frog department for another twenty years. She stood up and took a cake from the box he held up. She munched on this for the duration of the lesson and listened to the rest of the class participate in the riddles. Once the final answer was given, or stuttered in some cases, class was dismissed. Selina jumped down from her seat and exited the classroom. Before she left she thanked her teacher and smiled at the sphinx, "Thanks for the great lesson, both of you." |
AHHH really her answer was right!?! Honestly by saying the answer to the riddle she was only guessing. "WEEEEEE chocolate frogs!" Nika bounced up and down excitedly as she went and grabbed one hoping that she wouldn't get Godric again. Every chocolate frog card is Gryffindor. Hmph. A change would be nice. "Thank you professor for the lesson." She said to him as smiled at the sphinx. "Bye-bye sphix-y" |
Eino hadn't noticed how fast time had gone by until he heard the bell and the professor dismissed class. He packed all of his belongings, except for one piece of parchment, which he then took to the Sphinx. Approaching her, he extended his arm, not too close though, giving her the piece of parchment, and said "Thank you for coming to our class, here is a token of my gratitude." He supposed she could take a bite out of his arm if she wanted, too, but he didn't want to offer. With that, he left the parchment next to her, thanked the professor too, and skipped back to the castle still wondering what her fur would feel like. SPOILER!!: Parchment |

Success. Lola quickly giggled and her heart leaped from the inside as she stared at the Sphinx with such admiration, wondering if that symbolized the start of their friendship. Smiles were love--and love, was friendship, so in her mind--this was the start of their beautiful friendship. The girl glanced at the sweets offered by the professor but quickly shook her head. "No thanks, professor," aka evil man trying to break friendships, "It might give me a sore throat. Actresses need that voice, you know what I meaaaaaan?" Why had she just told him that? Maybe from the glee the Sphinx had just given her. Whatever. "BYEEEEE ROSIEEEEE!" This time she was shouting, and class was over--and they were both friends, and she finally broke her spell on no shouting and all that. Quickly the girl waved towards the Sphinx for thirty seconds or so, and then started walking away--when she had the odd desire to wave again, and so she did--and she had started walking, paused, waved again in this never-ending process until she wasn't seen anymore. "LOVE YA ROOOOOOOOOSIIIIEEEEE!" Would they meet again? |

A riddle? How could it be a riddle!? Even it did make sense...it made no sense! Or it was just weird in her opinion that the answer to a riddle was 'riddle'. Yea, that was pretty weird. Running her hands through her dark wavy hair when finally it was said class was dismissed, feeling like her brain was trampled over a few hippogriffs instead of actually learning something, except the fact that Sphinxes were rather annoying and amusing at the same time, and also the fact that Professor McFluffy was on the evil side what with giving out chocolate, the Slytherin stood up and grabbed her bag. Slinging it over her shoulder, she sighed and looked around. Eh. "Goodbye Professor..." Whatever your name was. Evelyn doubted it was 'McFluffy'. "And Goodbye Rosamund." Thanks for making their brains hurt. Pfft. Off to her next class then. |

As she walks away, Aiden glances at Rosamund. She gives the sphinx a faint smile and a small nod before walking away towards the castle. |
Kurumi continued to look at Rosumond in admiration and awe as the sphinx continued to speak. She felt like applauding, and did so, but a soft golf clap to show her appreciation. However, Eino outdid her by offering the sphinx a piece of parchment that she was able to catch a quick peak of its contents when the wind blew by and fluttered its pages a bit. “Pssst! Eino!” she whispered following after him. “Your drawing is adorable!” Then, she turned to the professor and the SUPER!AWESOME Rosamund and bowed deeply. “Thank you very much for the lesson, Professor and Lady Rosamund,” she chirped before bowing once more. “I do hope you will come to visit us again, Rosamund.” And tell more riddles and perhaps allow her to call her Rosie one day. With that, Kurumi picked up her things, slung her bag over her shoulder, and ran to catch up with Eino. As she did, she looked over her shoulder at the Slytherin first year who had been watching her and shivered. Born in the year of the fiery serpent...that was kind of scary... |
