CoMC #1: Riddle Me This

Though it had taken a while for him to decide, Professor MacFusty had, at last, come to the conclusion to hold his lesson in the paddock located outside the Magical Creatures Nursery. Knowing that perhaps some students would be confused, he left an announcement pinned to the door of his hut, indicating where to go and what exactly they should not do upon reaching their destination and taking a look at MacFusty's current companion.

For instance, they should not yell or gasp or point fingers or just plain run away.

Well, they could run away, but that would be a bit silly, not to mention a pity as well. Not that this sentiment was shared by the creature pacing restlessly near him. From the small stool he was sitting on, Lachlan was busy using his elm wand to write on the blackboard located almost right next to him, the following message:

"Can you not yell? I know I said this already, but please don't do it. Rosie won't like it anymore than she likes having me call her 'Rosie.' Also, take out a piece of parchment, some ink and write your name and year on it. Then just place it on your lap when you are done. Thanks!"

Lachlan smiled to himself at a job well done (mostly--there was not much he could do about his only half-decent handwriting), and pocketed his wand. The Creature he'd seemed to refer to as 'Rosie,' however, grunted at him and sat down upon her hind legs, looking both supremely offended and nearly obnoxiously bored.

"You need to relax, Ros--Milady," Adviced MacFusty, employing a kind, soothing tone.

The young Sphinx used her cool aquamarine almond-shaped stare to glare daggers at him, but said nothing else. Normally, Lachlan would have been slightly alarmed of being in the presence of a seemingly irritated Sphinx, but in better spirits he could not be. And in any case, even if Rosie did decide to pounce and have him for lunch, her efforts would be stopped by the series of charms placed around her. Also? She was wagging her tail, so she couldn't be that upset.

Quietly, Lachlan chuckled and waited for the students to arrive.

OOC: The lesson will not start right away, just to give everyone a time to arrive, react to Rosie, etc. Don't forget to get familiar with the class rules, and that, you know, Lachlan is THERE, so chatting TOO much isn't really a good idea. Not unless you think the idea of staying after class to clean up the stable is a good idea.

Helena was excited about this lesson! Simply because she didn't take it last year and she was super curious about it. So... she walked cheerfully towards the place, where the first lesson will be held and smiled when she spotted the man. "Hello, professor," the girl said.

She also noticed the instructions on the blackboard, but something else caught her attention. "Is this... a Sphinx?" She read a lot about them! And this one was... fascinating!

Emzily 05-14-2011 05:24 PM

Jamie liked animals.

But that wouldn't be enough to make this lesson good, if that made sense. Despite that, the third year was somewhat looking forward to his very first Care of Magical Creatures lesson. With his bag of things that he needed to bring, he approached the area of the lesson but suddenly slowed the process.

What in Merlin's pyjama's was that?

Steadying his walk towards the professor, Jamie took a breath and smiled. Animals could smell fear, right? It looked angry, which wasn't good. "Hello, professor." He quietly said, not looking at the creature. Looks like Jamie had to broaden his idea of magical creatures, and not just simply class them as harmless Crups and Kneazles.

CARE OF MAGICAL CREATURES!

This class was cute. It always had cute creatures. Cute cute CUTE! Lola wanted to take all of the fluffy animals in the world and then hug them all at once! Then she would befriend each and every one of them because of their fluffiness.

Because who doesn't like fluffy and cute?

Lola Jones hoped for fluffy and cute.

She went to the hut already, glancing at the announcement on the hut. No yelling? No gasping? No pointing fingers? What if it was an EXTREMELY cute creature? But no, the girl took the instructions seriously and she composed herself from yelling or screaming or having a fit over the extreme possible fluffiness she would have faced. The girl took instructions as a script; there were always instructions on how to play a part--would she scream, look scared?--in this case, she would have to remain cool. Take a chill-pill.

She finally arrived at class, and her eyes were met by a... it was like a lion. BUT IT WASN'T! The girl had never seen anything like this before. The mane looked fluffy, but she was more focused on the sphinx's face. Almost human. Was it a human head? She opened her mouth--WAIT, NO GASPS, and so she just stood there.

"She's beaaaaaaaaaaaautiful," she sang and bowed to the sphinx.

Lola waved towards the Professor a 'hello' and then went to take out a parchment and quill. Eeee. Quills. She wanted to test out her fancy quill she bought from Diagon Alley.

Ellie was torn between looking forward to coming to Saylen's class, and dreading it. Could they possibly be going on another trip? Or were they going to have to witness more cruel treatment of innocent and adorable creatures?

Upon arriving at the paddock, the thought was wiped from her mind. There was a sphinx. A real life sphinx.

GASP.

After staring at it for quite a while, Ellie finally tore her eyes from the beast and allowed them to take in the...professor? "Are you..." The new professor? Filling in for the evilish woman?

And to the sphinx, "Hiii pretty sphinx." Wouldn't want to be RUDE or anything, right?

Rosemary McGonagall 05-14-2011 05:40 PM

Rosemary walked towards them and seeing the Sphinx, she curtsied before smiling to the Professor, "Hello...."

She then sat down before taking out her quill, ink and parchment before writing her name and year at the top.

Ariella entered her Care of Magical Creatures lesson. "Hello, professor!" she said happily. She studied the pretty creature for a moment before taking out a blank piece of parchment and writing her name (Ariella Adler) on the top of it.

Noel trudged down to where the note he found on the Professor's door told him to, his mind still at the castle with Rogue, who had seemed very bored in the Owlery that day. He really needed to write a letter to send home soon, he was sure Rogue would appreciate the chance to take a longer flight.

He was still thinking about his owl when he saw the Professor, and he only absentmindedly registered him.

"Hi, Professor," he said, sitting down and taking out a quill and parchment.

And then spotting the huge form next to his teacher.

Noel's mouth dropped wide open at the sight of the sphinx, his eyes widening until they were almost popping out of their sockets. This was what they were going to be studying? He'd always wanted to actually meet a real sphinx, but for it to happen right at the start of his school career was almost too much like a dream come true to believe.

"Wow", he breathed, as yet unable to say anything else.

Ronnie ran down to the Class. She was really excited about this and couldn't wait. She loved this class. It was her second favorite only to be followed by charms. She saw the note and went to the padlock fence. She took at long in had gasp.

Was...that...really...a sphinx. They like were crazy animals weren't they, did the Professor really think it was a good idea to show us THIS animal. Ronnie took out a piece of parchment never taking her eyes of the animal. She wrote.

Christina practically skipped into Care of Magical Creatures. It was one of her favorite lessons- she loved creatures of all kinds. "Hey, professor!" she said happily. She leaned over a bit to see the lovely Sphinx striding around behind the professor.
"She's beautiful, professor! Where on earth did you get her? They can be quite violent if I remember correctly. Not that it should stop you," she said excitedly. "After all, it's no fun to only learn about tame creatures."
Chris had always been facinated by the more dangerous creatures, the ones she never thought she would be able to observe up close. She looked around further and noticed the professor's request, taking out a piece of parchment.

This was all kinda weird...walking down to magical creatures class and not having Destiny by her side while doing so. She supposed it was all for the best though. What if Professor Whoever he/she is had a firs going!? Her EX-friend would have stopped her immediately from hugging it getting closer, she was sure of it. Now though? Now she had the freedom of hugging it appreciating the flames.

Unfortunately, there were no flames. Just a sphinx. Pfft.

Staring at it some, it was only a few seconds later did she notice the blackboard and what was written on it. Huh. Name tags. What happened to the Professors knowing their names and years before their lessons began? Sitting down, she pulled out a parchment, her quill, ink, and her notebook so she had something to write on before starting on this name tag thing. Why did it make her feel like a first year again?

Rose grinned as she walked in and then caught site of the Sphinx and the notice beside it. 'Oh, hello Rosie! Oh, you are lovely!' Rose said 'You look so magnificent!' Rose said as she looked at the eyes. They were so..... Well, they looked so lovely! 'Oh, hello Professor!'

Care of Magical Creatures! One of Alex's FAVORITE classes! He wondered what they'd be studying today...he kind of hoped it was Lethifolds. He really wanted to know what they looked like, and he wanted to see how accurate he'd been in his drawing of one. Hehe.

Instead, when he finally reached the place that the professor had instructed them to go, he just...stared. His eyes wide. He knew EXACTLY what that was from reading his textbooks. That was SPHINX, that was. A sphinx that could TOTALLY eat them if he/she wanted to.

After a few more moments of staring, he found a spot near the back, but not before smiling and saying "Good day, professor" to the new guy. He REALLY hoped this guy knew how to handle this creature. He had to, right? Why else would he have the job? As he continued to keep a close on the sphinx, he pulled out his parchment and quill and quickly jotted down the info the New Guy wanted and set it on his lap.

For the Sphinx whose name appeared to be Rosie, the student may as well not been there. She refused to acknowledge anyone who did not directly and truly acknowledged her first.

"Oh," Helena said quickly, while her face turned pink. "Helena Hopkins," she added, then turned her attention to the BEAUTIFUL creature and smiled at it. "Hello to you too," she giggled at the apparently grumpy Sphinx. "Does..." he? she? "it have a name?" She asked, looking back at the man.

How insulting. She didn't HAVE WINGS!!!

Rosemary nodded, "Professor Lachlan." She greeted as she looked at Rosie in awe and admiration, "She's magnificent...." She sighed softly in envy.

Care of Magical Creatures. Mmm. Finlay wasn't exactly good at this topic, but it was probably a good idea to show up. So The headboy was wandering along towards the paddock, after reading the sign that had been left by the professor. It kind of made him wonder what creature they were going to be looking at.
Mmm. His question was answered as he got to the paddock. Woaah. Was that a Sphinx. Mmm. Maybe he was glad that he had come. "That Sphinx looks really beautiful Sir..." Finlay nodded with a smile, as he looked between the sphinx and the professor. Oh yes. Better say hello. "And hello Professor." He nodded again, before wandering over, and sitting down. Once sat down he took a piece of parchment out and wrote his name on it.

Kita skipped down towards the paddock, quietly excited for this lesson. Care of Magical Creatures was her second favourite lesson and there was always something interesting to learn!

Having reached the paddocks, her eyes scanned the area and rested on the board. No yelling? What? Why would you- WAS THAT A SPHINX?! o_O

Kita's jaw dropped. It was only know that she was noticing it. Such. A. Pretty. SPHINXIE!

She shook her head and smiled. No need to alarm an animal, she knew that. She looked away from the sphinx and looked around at the professor. "Hello Professor!" she said, taking a seat. The brunette looked back at the board at the instructions listed. She took out a parchment and a quill and hastily scribbled:

Smiling, she looked up again and waited for the class to begin.

She nodded politely at the Professor and smiled- "Hello, Professor" she said softly, she spotted the girl she'd met and waved at Kita before going over to her and waiting with her for the class to begin.

Rosie wasn't pretty. She was glorious. She was majestic. She was beautiful enough to deserve an entire synonym of the word Beautiful to be created after her. To look at her was not enough--Staring was the right way to do it.

And yet, yet the girl had referred to her as Pretty. What was she? An Abraxan? A hippogriff?

But she took it anyway, not expecting humans to know any better, and gave the girl a stiff nod of her great head.

"A member of the house of Rowena Ravenclaw, are you not?" Wondered Rosie out loud, and speaking for the first time. Her voice was not the typical deep sort that was part of her ancestors; instead, it was almost musical. She sounded very young, too. "Wit beyond measure is a man's greatest treasure."

BEAM.

"It's VERY, very, VERY nice to meet you," Mr. Saylen replacer. He had no idea. Treyen must be thrilled, yeah? Did the boy even know yet?

Actually, he probably did, it always seemed like Ellie was the last to find out about staff changes. She should probably pay more attention to the Staff table at the opening feast.

She beamed at the Professor some more. "Oh and 'm Ellie." Not 'Miss'. Not 'Miss Stone'. And NOT 'Eliana'. Ellie'll do.

Turning her attention back to the Sphinx...that SPOKE to her (a cause for more goggling), she said, "I am..." The motto, she wasn't too sure about. "Do you think so?"

Ellie valued many things other than 'wit'. What exactly did 'wit' imply, anyway?

Selina sat at her desk and took all of her supplies out of her bag. She set up her desk to be ready for CoMC. That meant gloves, a man eating book, and a quill and notebook. Not the usual supply list for a classroom setting.

Once she was ready she looked at the new Professor who had quirky manner of speaking. When would class begin?

After feeding his cat back in the boys' dormitory, Theodore had made the long journey from Ravenclaw Tower all of the way to Care of Magical Creatures. He hadn't trekked this far in a long time and by the time he arrived, he was slightly flushed, his breathing a bit heavy. Wiping his forehead with the right sleeve of his robes, Theodore's heart rate only increased at the sight of that... that thing. Blinking a few times, he saw that it was a sphinx. A SPHINX. DURING THE FIRST LESSON OF THE YEAR. His instincts told him to run and hide under his covers, snug with his tabby cat, but his ever-inquisitive mind froze his feet to the ground. Theodore Dumble was here to learn, gosh darn it, and not to be a coward!

His eyes skimming the instructions, he took out his new Care of Magical Creatures notebook and inked in what he needed to.

When he'd calmed a little, Knox removed his hand and instead wriggled his fingers in the direction of the creature. He wanted to touch the pretty. EEEEEE!

Chocolate staining the corners of her lips, Ophelia wiped the evidence quickly with the back of her hand. She was determined to not make herself look ridiculously porcine and childish in front of the professor. After all, first day impressions were EVERYTHING.

It took her a while, but she'd managed to get to class alright--no scratches or ghosts trying to trick her today. Tugging on her pigtails, the girl's dimpled smile grew as her steel blue eyes widened at the sight of the sphinx. Hands on her cheeks, she tried to keep her voice composed. "She is absolutely stunning," she cooed, eyes still on the sphinx. The creature was simply amazing. How did she know? Puh. PUH. Ophelia always knew the amazingness that things exuded. For example, she knew this lesson would be amazing and that she'd write an amazing letter home telling her parents about how absurdly cool her day had been.

"Hello Professor," she beamed, all smiles as she took a seat. Her heart felt like bursting, but Ophelia could not let her head go to la-la land just yet. She had a task to do. Taking out a bit of parchment, she wrote her name in chunky and round letters.

Isobel showed up and her gaze was first drawn to the sphinx. "Hello Professor," she said. Each and everyone of the students who arrived received nods and small smiles from Professor MacFusty as he pinned the parchments with their names to their robes, while Rosamund spent her time ignoring the newly arrived students. It was better that way for now, MacFusty thought; Rosamund was very close to throwing a fit just like the one she'd thrown earlier when he announced the reason why she'd come from so far away, and it had taken him almost two hours to calm her down.

It had almost cost him a finger, too, but that was neither here nor there. "For those who asked, I am perfectly well, thank you." And he could seen that most of them were, too, if not a tad shaken by Rosie's presence. "Now, I'd like to---" But the rest of his sentence was lost by a loud yell that quickly reminded him of France, and as a result, Beauxbatons.

As Helena took a seat, she had the chance to actually read the instructions that were written on the blackboard, so she took a piece of parchment and wrote her name on it. And... placed it on her lap. But she couldn't stop admiring the beautiful creature!

Buuut she had to stop eventually, because professor MacFusty had spoken. What did she expect? That was a simple question, so she raised her hand. "Maybe hippogriffs?" The girl suggested, slightly shrugging. "But a sphinx is just... amazing." MORE than amazing. "As for the respect, do you mean respect for the magical creatures? Because everyone should show them that." Yup.

Charlie entered the paddock, rather nervous for the lesson. She was excited but scared that whatever they would be working with would attack her. She had gone off magical creatures when she got bitten by a wild Bowtruckle on a camping trip to a forest with her dad. She had came anyway to try and get over her fear.
"Hi Professor," she said quietly as she realised that a Sphinx was staring at her. It was beautiful and Charlie anted to touch it but she couldn't and sat down next to Luna and wrote on her parchment.

"EEP!" He was always getting told off, so not fair. Just because he was appreciating the pretty! Tearing his eyes away from the sphinx - he was so going to nuzzle it before the end of the lesson - Knox finally turned his attention to the Professor.

Lachlan MacFusty! He'd taught at Beauxbatons for a couple of his first terms.. well, now he was DEFINITELY get to nuzzle the sphinx. Y'know, with him and the Professor being old buddies and such.

A tad delusional? Perhaps.

"Respect?" The fifth year said, tilting his head to one side? What was that all about? He wanted to play fetch with the sphinx. And cuddle it. And and and... what did respect have to do with Care of Magical Creatures? HUH?

"There's a super duper old muggle song called Respect," Knox said, waving his hand in the air. "It's pretty good, Sir." Again, what did that have to do with Care of Magical Creatures?

Bleu quickly raised her hand, "I expect to learn more about magical creatures and how to take of them or protect ourselves from them. Also, respect is something we need to show not only to our professors and peers, but to animals as well." Smiling she put her hand back down.

Ellie was all for the option of continuing talking until common ground was found. Especially because it would be with a Sphinx. And she could tell her children and grandchildren about the educated conversation she once had with a real, live Sphinx.

But, alas, the teacher stopped them. The smile he gave made it okay, though.

All attention was on the professor, then. MacFusty. "..." Ellie was going to say something about the Hebridean Black dragons, but opted not to. Maybe he wasn't part of those MacFusty's. Maybe he had low self esteem of being overshadowed by the uber cool MacFusty's his whole life, and would rather not have someone bring up the awesomeness of his name when it was unrelated to him. Yet, MacFusty wasn't a very common name, was it?

Expect? Well, she'd like another trip. And Stryker hinted at one last term, but maybe that was before he knew Saylen had left, as well. Honestly, Care of Magical Creatures was one of the few classes she expected anything from. No snacks, like in History of Magic, no flying like in Flying, no headaches like in Arithmancy. Maybe, "To learn about amazing animals." Such as a Sphinx. Maybe even a dragon? If he did end up being one of those MacFusty's, that is.

As for respect, "That has to be earned." Saylen hadn't understood that. Nor did Bishop.

MagicGlitter 05-14-2011 08:20 PM

Ariella raised her hand. "I expect to learn more about magical creatures and how to care for them." She paused for a second. "Respect is something that we all need to show for our teachers, our classmates, our environment, and our animals." She crossed her fingers under her desk, hoping her answer was okay.

Roselyn 05-14-2011 08:22 PM

What they expect out of this subject? And....what they thought respect is? "I expect to learn about magical creatures." she said after lazily raising her hand. "How to take care of them, if they're dangerous, what to do if they feel threatened, where they come from...all of the good stuff." Obviously. That was what they're supposed to learn in this class correct? She knew a certain someone wouldn't be too pleased if all they were going to do was sit around read out of a textbook. But seeing as there was a sphinx sitting right there, that probably wouldn't be the case.

"And respect is something that one should...pretty much give to everyone, or everything, regardless of what you may think. It'd be rude not to." And...she was rude a lot of the time apparently, but that was beside the point.

Unimportant. "Should we agree to disagree, perhaps? Or shall we continue to talk until we find a point in which we agree, at last?"

Lady Rosie tried to hide her own pleasure of having made that comment rhyme. She tried. She really did.

She failed at it, too.

"No, you will not," Lachlan said firmly, but with a small smile for both Rosie and Ellie. He had, after all, a class to continue and did not need for Rosamund to go on tangents, in which everything rhymed, but nothing made much sense.

It'd already happened, before the students arrived. "As I was saying." He cleared his throat. "I'm Lachlan MacFusty, your new Care of Magical Creatures Professor." Obviously. "And I want you all to tell me what you expect from this subject this year, and what are your thoughts about the word Respect."

Kita bit her lip. What did she want? Well, what she really wanted was some food but that's not exactly answering the Professor's question. Not really, anyways. Hm...

She raised her hand. "Um... I expect to learn about interesting creatures," That won't try to eat me alive! Not exactly a hard request now is it? But that is all she expected from Care of Magical Creatures. To learn about interesting creatures.

Um... Respect? Now that was an interesting question! What did Respect mean to her? "Respect is..." Overrated? No, no, no, you can't say that! "when you respect someone!" Good one Kita(!) "Like, when you acknowledge their abilities and... you're not rude basically." She shrugged. That had to be good enough right?

Lola gasped inside, but only showed a smile on the out.

See, she took this no gasping, no pointing, no shouting thing very seriously. It wasn't a joke. The temptation to break her silence and then have a spaz attack on the pretty human-lion creature and then try to befriend her was ... well it was definitely tempting. As a way to control herself, the girl just PICTURED her and this Rosie... BEST FRIENDS, and then they would run through the meadows hand by (paw?), with cheesy music playing in the background, and then they would both feast on lemon drops and marshmallows with a late night campfire, side by side.

What a scene indeed.

A tempting one too.

The professor pinned her parchment to her robes and she was quite confused of why he'd done that, but more interested to see what would happen. Would the lady-lion do a special trick on them? EEE!

Lola tried her best to avoid eye contact with the sphinx anymore because just ONE MORE LOOK AT ROOOSIE, and she would seriously replay that scene she'd just thought of, in reality.

Respect? Lola knew respect!

The girl raised her hand. "What I expect from this year, professor? I expect lots and LOTS of fluffiness, professor," she said that in a very serious and professional way, "Respect? Well I think respect is all about the looooooove that we ALL must share within one another, because you know--WITHOUT RE--" She was almost preaching it in a very loud tone, FORGETTING ABOUT ROSIE'S SENSITIVE EARS, "Without respect, we would all die. Because without respect--where would the love be? And without love--" dramatic pause, and she decided to quote off Shakespeare, "But you know... 'the course of true love never did run smooth...'"

Was she getting off topic? Because love always did intrigue the girl. But they were not talking about love--they were talking about respect.

"Respect is ... impoooortant."

But the fourteen-year old girl was dazed, suddenly very dramatic and thinking about loooove.

If that was all true, then MacFuzzy will be on his 'cool list' forever and ever. And lookit! It was true! He'd brought a Sphinx for them. Because it was for them, no?

As long as the creature eats no one, then it was all good, no?

The fifth year wrote what it needed to be written on his parchment, and then eyed it once more.

Millie was basically only looking forward to this lesson, well she was until she saw the sphinx. DIDN'T THEY EAT PEOPLE?! And everyone was acting so calm about it, and it was just sitting there. WHAT. She avoided eye contact with the little demon sphinx-y thing but she figured it was safe because you know if it wasn't, the professor would be in trouble. And Millie would scream.

ANYWAY. Respect? What she expected? Well she definitely hadn't been expecting a sphinx and she respected the teacher because he was a teacher, did that count? Who knows, so instead she sat there in silence and let the other people just answer it for her.

Still amazed at the sight of the animal in front of her, Ariadne thought about the Professor's questions. She did like cute animals, like kittens and puppies, but magical creatures? Not so much. So she hesitantly said : 'I would like to know more about magical creatures without needing to...umm...make too much contact with them.' That sounded silly, but it was at least her sincere expectation of a CoMC class.

Now to the next part of the question. 'Respect is treating others as you yourself would like to be treated. It implies tolerance and understanding.' The girl was still holding the parchment with her name and year in her lap.

"Knox Macnair." Lachlan said, his tone very nearly flat. He did manage to sound somewhat polite, though, as he regarded his old student with a stern look.

Never following instructions. Always the excitable one.

How had he gotten sorted into Slytherin? "Control yourself, Mister MacNair, please." That wasn't really a suggestion. MacFusty opened his mouth to continue, but was, once again, interrupted. This time by Rosie.

Rosamund, who'd quit ignoring the humans and gone back to cooly regarded each and every one of them, raised one of her eyebrows at the little red-head. "I do, but I can see that you do not." As Kannalynne wrote down her name and year on a piece of parchment, and still contemplating the sphinx, she looked up to the Professor.

"Respect is not merely a word, sir, it must be taken to heart. Reverence is a state of mind, not only an indication that one posesses manners. Respect must be earned, and is therefore suppossed to be valued." Bam. She was such a word ninja.

As Kana smiled to herself, she finished writing with a bit of a flourish, then looked back up as other students answered as well.

Kimalia had already chosen a safe distance from the creature that had many spells containing it. It's so huge.. Kimalia was a little worried despite it's beautiful look. Ahem. "Hi, there. And your name is...?"

Rosie remained silent, but may have done some sort of huffing sound, a sign of clear annoyance.

Oh.

"Sorry, sir. I'm Jamie Keaton from Slytherin house." The Jamie Keaton. Yes, it seemed that the boy was distracted by the killer animal in his presence. APOLOGIES. The huffing sound that the animal made caused a small gasp to leave his lips and a sudden step back. Why was he such a wimp??!

What did he expect? He expected not to be mauled to death.

"I expect to learn about magical creatures, I guess. Because I have absolutely no idea what that is." He pointed to the killer looking cat. That was him all over. Couldn't tell the difference between a crup and a dog, or a cat and a kneazle. Respect over all? Hmmm.... "Respect is being nice to people and not talking over them when they are talking. Also not to.. point." Like he had JUST pointed to that animal.

Whoops. The boy looked down.

Idiot. :head:

Buuut she had to stop eventually, because professor MacFusty had spoken. What did she expect? That was a simple question, so she raised her hand. "Maybe hippogriffs?" The girl suggested, slightly shrugging. "But a sphinx is just... amazing." MORE than amazing. "As for the respect, do you mean respect for the magical creatures? Because everyone should show them that." Yup.

Hippogriffs. Maybe. Lachlan would keep that in mind for now, but it all depended on how they handled and dealt with Rosamund. Though, now that he thought about it, he should have held a lesson about a creature like Hippogriffs before bringing Rosie over.

Oops. He flicked his wand towards the parchment on Helena's lap, and pinned it to her robes. "Indeed. Magical Creatures deserve the same amount of respect as anyone else."

"Hi Professor," she said quietly as she realised that a Sphinx was staring at her. It was beautiful and Charlie anted to touch it but she couldn't and sat down next to Luna and wrote on her parchment.
Charlie raised her hand, "I think respect means to treat someone like your...equal." she said, her eyes kept twitching over to the Sphinx. She didn't think it was her equal. More like her superior. Charlie gulped.

Lachlan raised his eyebrows at the student who arrived late. "Glad that you could join us, Miss..." Pinning the parchment slash name tag to her robes, he added, "...Rimsworth. Unfortunately, I will have to deduct two points from Ravenclaw for your tardiness." Pity, really. Lachlan wasn't the sort who took points easily, but if he let this one slide, next thing he knew some students would not even bother to show up.

"What?" The world had slipped from his mouth before he could help himself, and Lachlan stared at Knox MacNair before clearing his throat and cough in order to avoid a snort to come out of him.

A song. A muggle song.

Lachlan was not unaware of the slight curious look on the girl's face, when he said his name. But he pretended otherwise, and instead nodded along to her own definition of respect. "That is correct, Ellie. Respect isn't a gift. It is a reward."

The amount of what looked like first years was big enough to plant a very tiny seed of doubt about the entire topic they'd be discussing. But then, the younger students seemed to be very familiar with the word RESPECT so far, so perhaps they were ready for it.

Not only did the young girl supplied a very good answer, but also efficiently pinned her name to her robes. And, naturally, Kimalia was a member of the house of Salazar Slytherin.

Not that he was biased. "Thank you, Miss Fanster. And I can assure you that Rosie is not as dangerous as she looks." No, she was actually worse, but they were all perfectly safe right now.

Rosamund, who had been mostly quiet for the past ten minutes, lazily rested her eyes on the Slytherin girl and drawled out in her musical voice, "I like her."

Idiot.

Rosamund stared at the finger directed at her. Then processed the boys' words.

Almost angelically, she smiled. "I suppose we can all see now why a member of the Ravenclaw house you are not.

That didn't even rhymed.

Bloody kids.

Lachlan's mouth pursed. "Rosamund, apologize at once."

Lady Rosamund the Seventh gave the Care of Magical Creatures Professor a very long look. Then slowly turned settled her cool almond-shaped eyes on the Slytherin boy. "My apologies, young snake. I should not have spoken to you in such a way.

And that had almost rhymed. Her mother would be so proud.

Lachlan momentarily pinched the bridge of his nose, and stood up. The grass rippled under his feet as he marched around the students, and began to talk. "It pleases me that most of you seem to be aware of what a great part Respect plays when it comes to dealing with Magical Creatures." He paused, to watch Rosamund wag her tail again, and then continued. "As many of you have pointed out, respect goes both ways. You cannot expect respect from anyone, or anything, without giving it first." He shot a small smile to the Hufflepuff girl who'd last spoken, and continued. "I want you to keep that in mind not only for this particular class, but for the rest of the term as well. Creatures will not respect you or cooperate with you, or even befriend you, if you do not respect them." It worked the same way with humans, really.

When MacFusty reached the area where Knox MacNair was sitting, he placed a hand gently on the boy's shoulder. "Before we immerse ourselves in the topic of Sphinxes, I believe Mister MacNair owes us a performance? A song, I believe?" He smiled at the Slytherin, and then continued, "In the meantime, though, while we wait for him to get ready, I want you all to write down in your parchment one thing you know for certain about Sphinxes."

A song. A muggle song.

Some things would never change. "Are you familiar with the song, Mister MacNair? Would you say you're familiar enough with it to serenade us for a moment?"

Knox WAS familiar with the song. Actually, he was extremely familiar with it. His mother collected old muggle inventions, and she happened to have that song on an old vinyl. He often boogied to it in front of his full length mirror - practicing his moves.

"Sir, I haven't had any rehearsals!" Macnair gasped in horror, giving his head a quick shake. And helloooo, they were here to learn about magical creatures! "Not to mention the acoustics out here would be simply awful!"

He'd totally sing if it meant he got to adopt the sphinx though... maybe they could strike up a deal..

Oops. He flicked his wand towards the parchment on Helena's lap, and pinned it to her robes. "Indeed. Magical Creatures deserve the same amount of respect as anyone else."

Oh, he pinned the parchment to her robes. "Thank you," she whispered, smiling. At least she didn't need to hold that one on her lap.

But she had something to do, before he will... was he really going to sing something? So... Helena took her quill and wrote something quickly.

See?

The professor obviously understood the position she was in. Lola was a victim of the horrendous disease but she stopped herself, and would not be consumed by those nasty thoughts and simply sighed, nodding very dramatically and showing much emotion through her gestures.

"Thank you professor, thank you," she sniffed.

Well, no, she was not a victim of love, at all--just wanted to get that meaningful quote across and to have one of those 'I am a drama-lama' moments.

Lachlan mentioned that creatures won't befriend without respect.

So Lola Jones wanted to suck up to the Sphinx as much as she could--until she got that friendship (it worked on so many people if you played your cards right).

WHAT WAS THIS ABOUT A PERFORMANCE?! From a boy? From her very own house?! A song? How exciting! Lola Jones applauded, quietly (not wanting to disturb the Sphinx, no no no, she needed Rosie's friend by the end of class) and she waited eagerly. Hehe.

Meanwhile, the Slytherin girl got out her orange feathery quill (it was totally synthetic just for this class) and she flaunted her very puffy and feathery quill, for it was quite laaaaaarge and... puffy. Sphinxes? The girl wasn't an expert but she did know a few things about those creatures. She did once try out play a Sphinx in a play once, and of course, you had to know material before you played the part (she didn't get the part though, instead, she played as background scenery. Yes. Background scenery).

There was no better way to learn about creatures than by interacting with them. It was that simple.

Lachlan didn't say anything to the girl other than to nodding in agreement, but that was mostly because it seemed that Rosie had finally realized that there was another Rose-something who was part of the class.

Honestly, she could be so rude sometimes. "Lady Rosamund," Lachlan muttered, "Remember that respect goes both ways."

In response, the Sphinx merely grunted and nodded stiffly at the Gryffindor girl.

Rosemary looked at Ariadne and shifted herself towards her as she smiled softly, "Don't worry Ariadne.... You heard the Professor.." She smiled as she returned the nod to Rosamund.

She then looked at Rosamund with a calculating mind as she tried to remember what she knew about Sphinxes.

Well. She was glad he agreed. So if she didn't respect him, no harm, right?

It probably wouldn't be an issue, though. Ellie liked him already. She could tell.

Then he went into a speech about respect. Speeches were boring. He shouldn't do that. Though it was all true. At least, what Ellie didn't tune out seemed to be true.

As for writing what she knew about Sphinxes... She didn't have the materials to do so.

Okay, she did. But they were in her bag, and she didn't feel like getting them out. So, unless he was collecting... She had quite a few answers in her head, however, if MacFusty needed an answer out of her. But in the meantime, she occupied herself with observing 'Rosie'.

"What?" The world had slipped from his mouth before he could help himself, and Lachlan stared at Knox MacNair before clearing his throat and cough in order to avoid a snort to come out of him.

A song. A muggle song.

Some things would never change. "Are you familiar with the song, Mister MacNair? Would you say you're familiar enough with it to serenade us for a moment?"

"And to show respect for Magical Creatures as well," Added MacFusty, with a small nod towards the young Gryffindor.

"That is correct..." MacFusty leaned forward, squinting his eyes and trying to read the Hufflepuff's name. "Miss Rawley. Yes, that is correct. Can't expect them to respect us if we don't respect them."

After all, if they didn't respect Rosie, there was no way she'd play along. "You are not wrong, Ariella. Thank you."

What was her name again? Something about flowers... "Yes, correct." She still looked completely unimpressed, and even bordered the line of looking openly bored, but at least he was participating. "It would not only be rude, but also rather unwise." Especially when it came to Rosie. "Thank you for sharing, Evelyn."

Lachlan gave the Hufflepuff and the girl he was talking to a pointed look.

"Yes, yes. Being rude is bad." And unnecessary.

Unless you had Jarvey who happened to be called Stanley and just rejected anything you said.

....?

Lachlan MacFusty stared at the Slytherin girl. There was some... odd expression on her face, and she was going on about love...?

What....?

"It sure is, Lola."

Strange kid. Should he send her to Lily? Maybe Jones was sick...? "Thank for participating."

Because he was already familiar with the Hufflepuff prefect, Lachlan didn't bother to pin his name to his robes. One of his eyebrows raised a fraction at the boy's stare and comment, but didn't think too much of it. "Indeed, Treyen." Was all he said, before moving on to the next student.

The girl didn't seem to have much to say, though she did look a bit frightened. Lachlan nodded in what he hoped was a reassuring way, before pinning the parchment to the front of her robes.

The girl's completely honest comment made him grin enough for his dimples to show. "Thank you for your honesty, Miss Marchbanks. Though you should know not all Magical Creatures are dangerous." He also hoped she could overcome her... fear? Yes, that exactly.

There was no better way to learn about creatures than by interacting with them. It was that simple.

Honestly, she could be so rude sometimes. "Lady Rosamund," Lachlan muttered, "Remember that respect goes both ways."

In response, the Sphinx merely grunted and nodded stiffly at the Gryffindor girl.

Those were some big words coming out of such a young student, but seeing that the girl was a member of the Ravenclaw house, Lachlan supposed he should have expected no less. "You are correct, Miss Basthowe." And incredibly eloquent, too, but Lachlan didn't mention that. From his school years, he'd learned that most Ravenclaws were perfectly aware of their smarts and pointing them out would only earn you a look that clearly said, 'Thank you, Captain Obvious.'

Was that Sphinx insulting him?! Wh-why? Huuuh. He felt... degraded! Enough to even go into the corner and wallow in self pity. The apology did nothing to make him feel better. It also worried him that the Sphinx was talking. Jamie had no recollection of those creatures being able to talk...

"Oh... not to worry." Jamie's eyes wandered elsewhere. He seemed to think that he would die if he looked into its eyes. After looking aimlessly around the area, Jamie peered down to his parchment as the professor asked them to write something down.

A fact. A fact. ARGH, he needed a fact.

He waited for the song from a student, uninterested. He felt annoyed today.

Millie raised looked at the creature for a moment, then away. It was still creepy. There were tons of things that were known for sure about sphinxes. They guard treasure. They are really smart. They speak in riddles. The Egyptians liked them. The list goes on and on, but if they were talking about respect for creature, she figured the one that would be listed as respectful to a sphinx would be to call it highly intelligent. So that's what she wrote.

Kimalia wasn't quite convinced given the simple fact that all creatures are most dangerous when stressed or in danger. She still smiled unfazed by some of the stares she received for showing uneasiness. Glancing at Rosie who was staring at her lazily almost frightened her, but the longer she stared the more relaxed she became. Maybe this one isn't so bad after all..

She could respond to this one though. It was easy enough to draw up a fact about this creature. Only one though. Hmm. Arya scribbled down a fact about the beautiful creature, allowed herself one more fleeting glance at her, and then turned her attention to Professor RE-spect and the boy about to put on a show for them. Not as exciting as the Sphinx, but it should prove entertaining.

Was a song really necessary? Not that having someone randomly sing that "Respect" song would be all that awful, but that song wasn't going to be on her Care of Magical Creatures OWL now, was it? No, probably not. So it was entirely unnecessary and wasn't helping her prepare at all.

Vashti remained silent, though, and jotted down something she knew about sphinxes.

SPOILER!!: name tag + sphinx fact
Vashti Greenwell
Fifth year Ravenclaw

Several sphinxes were kept by a wizard named Crispin Cronk, who was later sent to Azkaban for continuously refusing the Ministry of Magic's requests to hand the creatures over to them.

Gavin looked up at the sphynx and smiled at her. He liked her witty speach and would have loved to actually start a conversation with her. He was pretty sure she would be very challenging to speak with.

Gavin took his piece of parchment and wrote down: They like to give riddle to solve. He wondered if he should also write there was a statue of one in Egypt but thought he would wait to see what happened next.

pundantic 05-14-2011 10:57 PM

Selina listened to her Professor speak. He went on about respect and the value of respect with animals, although she was sure that there was a hidden message of respect to himself in that little speech. After all he was a new Professor and they were usually not the most respected bunch.

Then when the Slytherin prepared for his performance Selina began to scribble down a fact about sphinxs on her parchment. Her knowledge was limited to a visit she had taken with her Muggle grandfather to a Muggle Museum when she was seven. But, hey, write what you know.

SPOILER!!: Selina's parchment

Selina Skylar, second year, Gryffindor

Sphinxs are different in every culture. The two most famous cultures to depict them in Greek and Egyptian. According to Greek mythology the sphinx brought on bad luck and destruction. Has the head of a woman, tale of a snake, wings of an eagle, and the body of a lion.

Lachlan momentarily pinched the bridge of his nose, and stood up. The grass rippled under his feet as he marched around the students, and began to talk. Kita blinked. Ok, this was a bit... tense. That pointed look the Professor had just shot her way was definitely going to teach her to shut up. She made a mental note to never get on the wrong side of him. She gave him a small smile.

Keeping her mouth firmly shut, she watched the Professor moving around the students. Right! Keep in mind to respect creatures? Practically done. In a way.

Wait... WHAT?! A performance? Now that should be interesting! Maybe the song was going to be about magical creatures...? Who knows!

Hm... Something about Sphinxes... Kita racked her brain, trying to think about something, anything, to do with sphinxes. "Ooh!" she said as something came into her head and she bent down and scribbled onto her parchment:

Oh. Alex hadn't given the best first impression, he shouldn't have said 'animals' then the subject would have been called Care of Macigal Animals, which is was not. He however tore his eyes from the sphinx in front of him to write down one thing on his parchment that he was certain about.

"And I want you all to tell me what you expect from this subject this year, and what are your thoughts about the word Respect."

Kurumi had been staring in awe at the Sphinx from the moment she had entered the classroom. It's frightening yet beautiful head of a human and its majestic yet menacing body of a lion. Kurumi had only read about this creature and was rather jealous that Triwizard Champions in the past had been given the opportunity to speak to one during a task. Although, she was sure that the students at that time had not enjoyed trying to figure out such a tricky riddle that she wasn't sure she would have been able to figure out under such pressure.

Kurumi was so interested in the creature that she almost didn't hear Professor MacFusty begin class.

Thankfully, she did, and she scribbled down her name, year, and house on her parchment.

SPOILER!!: Kurumi's parchment

Kurumi Hollingberry // Gryffindor // third year

She then looked up when she heard him address the class. What did she want to learn in class? Um...how about everything and anything that had to do with magical creatures? She wasn't picky, just as long as they didn't have to dig through poop. Still, her eyes kept flicking back to the BEAUTIFUL creature in front of them.

"Professor MacFusty," Kurumi squeaked as she raised her hand in the air. "I would like to learn more about your," she paused at her next word not knowing what would be the proper way to address the creature and NOT offend it. "...I mean, about Rosie." That was the name that had been written on the paper near his hut, right? She was under the impression that it was illegal to keep Sphinxes. "I also think that respect is something you must first think of yourself. Without respecting who you are as a person, I suppose it would be rather hard to respect others."

Kurumi almost squealed when Rosie spoke and addressed several students in the class. OH! How she wished the beautiful creature would also speak to her. She didn't understand why the Ministry put them in the category of 'beast' when they seemed to be so much more than an animal. A hippogriff, sure, that was a beast. But Roise and those like her could TALK! Didn't the term beast seem below them?

After squealing over and over in her head as she glanced up after each thing she had written down to look at Rosie and mostly ignoring the professor because he wasn't nearly as interesting as her, Kurumi set her parchment on her lap and waited for things to move on.

Could she talk to Rosie now? PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAASE?!

The thingy was talking to Kurumi! Alex watched with wide eyes before slowly raising his hand. No way did he want to say anything about sphinxes that would upset the creature in front of him, she might bite his head off. Or something that sphinxes did to fourth year Slytherins.

"Um I believe, they like to talk in riddles and such?" he said, but it came out more as a question than a statement. "Because they're intelligent and... stuff." he added ´quickly. "They do like that. Don't they? I mean... Do they?"

SHE WAS SCARING HIM! He liked his head and did not want her to have it.

HaRoHeGiNeLu 05-14-2011 11:31 PM

See? They were just saying their answers aloud. There was no need to waste parchment.

Ever, really, in Ellie's opinion.

Maybe homework was an exception. And Arithmancy. But that was pretty much it.

"Sphinx's have a XXXX rating because they can be violent when someone threatens the treasure they're guarding. Personally, I'd just call that protective. If they were given treasure to protect, I hope they'd protect it, even if it meant becoming violent." Basically, Ellie disagreed with the Ministry there.

Anna Banana 05-14-2011 11:32 PM

Wait--someone was going to sing?! ...but whhhhy?!

Sierra rolled her eyes in the direction of her parchment as she thought about something to say about sphinxes. Something no one else would think to write... She felt the need to be unique, since she'd apparently spaced out and missed a few questions here and there. She frowned as she tried to balance the name card and her parchment on her small lap. Shouldn't they have desks for something requiring writing?!

Quote:

Oh, they were meant to share now? Hmm...couldn't they have just verbally done this in the first place rather than writing it out? She eyed the new professor, and then she raised her hand to share. "The private ownership of sphinxes is--or maybe was--illegal. Crispin Cronk once got sent to Azkaban for having them in his backyard," she read aloud. Are you going to be sent to Azkaban, Professor!?

Kurumi PROBABLY should have been frightened by the look the sphinx was giving her, but she was just so overwhelmed by it that she just looked back at the sphinx with googly eyes. "Oh! Arya had turned her attention away from the boy and back to the creature the moment he'd decided not to preform.... or two seconds after she'd turned her eyes on him. He didn't fascinate her like the Sphinx did. The new professor did, only a bit though, and when he asked for answers she raised her hand. Kita's eyes bulged. It can... talk?! Like a human?! Well, obviously, seeing as it's got a human head. But still. Wow! Just... WOW! And to think she thought that the Professor was scary. She sighed. Hopefully she wouldn't have to go anywhere near the sphinx... who knows what could happen. She shook her head, trying not to let her imagination run free.

Share? But... but.... but she had only written down one thing. Ok, that was what he asked for but... share?! She bit her lip and raised her hand. "Um... I wrote down that sphinxes come from Egypt," she said, "At least, some of them do." That had to be good enough right?

highjinx 05-14-2011 11:35 PM

Lola raised her hand, wanting to be the FIRST to share her knowledge about this Rosie first. Obviously, she wasn't. But still--the sphinx would get so impressed by her sheer knowledge for them (even if it was just one fact) and that they would become friends for life! Yeah?! YEAH!

PLEASE ROSIE PLEAAAASE BE MY FRIEND.

Ahem.

Raised her hand.

"Sphinxes like to protect treasures! They're real good at protecting stuff."

ROOOOOOSSSSSSSIEEEE.

Kimalia 05-14-2011 11:42 PM

Realizing that the Professor wanted everyone to share what they had written, Kimalia raised her hand. "Well, Sphinxes are creatures with the body of a lion, wings of a great bird, and the face + chest/breast of a human." She didn't like sounding like she read off a card and decided to add more to it. "Culture-wise, the Greeks envisioned woman Sphinxes, whilst Egyptians envisioned male Sphinxes."

Selina looked down at her parchment and rose her hand to supply her answer. She was not the most creative person in the world so she just spoke word for word what she had previously written down. Besides it was kind of nice to have a script, "Sir, Sphinxs are different in every culture. The two most famous cultures to depict them in Greek and Egyptian. According to Greek mythology the sphinx brought on bad luck and destruction. Has the head of a woman, tale of a snake, wings of an eagle, and the body of a lion." Satisfied with her answer she turned to smile to Kurumi on her right. It was funny how the two girls always sat beside one another in every class, minus Potions. Selina sat as far away from Lafay as she could muster.

Just as she was about to say something to Kurumi she paused. Kurumi was talking to thin air, "...who are you talking to Kurumi...?"

princess of*hp* 05-15-2011 12:07 AM

Theodore, situated in the utmost center of the students, hadn't bothered to answer the first question with honesty. It would have sounded something like, "Tolearnhowtoprotectmyself, andsurvivearoundanyandallcreatures, becausetheyallkindascarememisterprofessorsirand... ermthat'samightfinesphinxpleasedon'thurtmesphinx." Yep, that would have been quite embarrassing.

No. Instead he scribbled furiously on his parchment, attempting to get his mind off of the dangerously beautiful creature that was a bit too close for comfort. Sphinxes have violent tendencies and come from Egypt.

samthehpfreak 05-15-2011 12:10 AM

Oh lookie. Millie raised her hand, someone had already said but stuff it, no harm in trying to get points. "Sphinxes are highly intelligent creatures, they're classified as dangerous and require specialist knowledge so only very skilled wizards or witches should attempt to handle one" she said, racking her brain for what she had read. Okay yup. That was all, she was satisfied with her answer. Yup she's done.

ArianaBlack 05-15-2011 01:07 AM

Nika had absolutely no idea. You'd think since it was her second year she would've learned by now to read some text books before coming to class. It's as If being a muggle born wasn't enough of an excuse for her. Still she sat beaming with her little "Nika Adler Second Year Gryffie" card on her lap. Maybe she'd think of something to add later on.

Sphinxes are very well known even among the muggles. So it is not too hard to determine their characteristics. Aiden glances over Rosamund before turning back to the professor. "The word sphinx origanates from Greek word sphingo which means to squeeze. There is a single sphinx in Greek mythology which is a unique demon destruction and bad luck," she pauses. "Sphinxes are best known to come from Egypt. However, there are also from South-East Asia."

littledhampir 05-15-2011 02:29 AM

Isobel thought about the question. Then she remembered something she had read in a muggle book once. She assumed it was true. So she wrote it down on the piece of paper. Then she raised her hand and said, "Sphinxes tell riddles." She hoped it was right.

Rosamund was being as social as Rosamund could ever be, and Lachlan, not what to break the spell--for lack of a better word--pretended to be oblivious to it all. "You've all made some very good points," MacFusty enthused, after checking that all the facts the students had supplied to him appeared on the blackboard after a lazy flick of his wand.

He'd also noticed that some of them seemed to have included some traits that muggles believed Sphinxes had. Though they'd gotten all of the mostly right, muggles had definitely let their imaginations run free when thinking sphinxes had wings. "You should know, however--"

"That I do not have wings!" Were they not using their eyes? She was right in front of them, for Cleopatra's sake! She had no wings. "I am not an Abraxan or some Hippogriff," Rosamund concluded, sounding both irritated and deeply offended.

"And the only thing human about me, is my voice and the face I sport," For the most part. She did have a face that could have easily fit on any thirteen year old, freckled girl. Though Rosamund liked to thing that her exquisite face, all cheekbones and dimples, would only fit in the body of someone with Veela blood.

Almost restlessly, she began to pace around the care of magical creatures professor, her tail gracefully waging behind her.

"Lady Rosamund is of course right, though employing that tone was not." He gave her a look. "Now that we are discussing the physical appearance of Sphinxes, however, I want you to look at Rosamund, at Rosamund's face, to be more precise, and try to imagine her as a human." Lachlan paused again, and sent Rosie what he hoped was an apologetic look. "After you do that, after you successfully picture her as a human, give me an estimate of how old exactly you'd think she is." Almost wryly, he smiled. "You should probably take her behaviour into consideration, too."

Suddenly, he remembered the blackboard and all the notes he'd appointed there. "Make sure you scribble down those characteristics if you don't have them already." They would be in the final. Maybe. Possibly.

Probably not.

Caroline raised her hand. "Egypian sphinx has a head of a human and a body of a lion. For thousands years wizards have used them to guard valuables and secrect hideaways and are usually only dangerous when what they are guarding is threatened." She wrote down what she had said along with what some of the others had said.

Simon had been paying attention to the goings on in class, listening and taking down notes as well as trying his best not to stare at the creature out or the respect the professor had brought up in the converstation. He finally raised his hand as he thought of an answer to the guess as to the sphinx's age. "Well I would think she'd be a teenager like most of us," he supplied lowering his hand to continue taking down notes, his gaze still up ahead. Her behavior certainly seemed to lend towards that with a human teenager still learning and testing her boundaries.

Kurumi thought that she was probably more brilliant than some of the other students at Hogwarts, so did that make them beasts? There was a strong case to be made for some of the students to be sure.

Bowing her head once more to the SUPERAWESOME Rosamund, Kurumi was tempted to introduce herself when Selina spoke AND THEN GOT SPOKEN TO AS WELL!

Kurumi returned to her parchment as the professor wrote a few things on the board and added the things she did not have as well as modify a few of her already written points.

Her eyes then popped out of her head when she heard his next question.

He HAD talked to her before hand, right? So, you know, she wouldn't leap across the small gap and claw a student to death for insulting her age.

Kurumi observed Rosamund and took note of her short temper and impatience, not too different from people in her own year to be sure. "Professor, she seems to be around the same age as most of us here." At least her mannerism echoed that.

"Isn't she amazing?!"

Selina heard a voice and looked around. Where was it coming from? She couldn't tell. "Kurumi do you-?" But then she saw it, her, it, her. A sphinx. Where in Merlin's name did she come from? They were not allowed to be private property, Ministry orders. So how did this new Professor get one? But more importantly she was talking to a Sphinx.

Clearing her throat Selina said, "Sorry, I didn't see you. I just... wow. You know that you are fantastic right? Seriously just beautiful." There was something very majestic about her. No wonder the ancient cultures all idolized these creatures.

She then heard Kurumi's faint voice echo to her, "Yeah she really is amazing. Bloody brilliant."

Then the Professor addressed the class and Selina sat up in attention and looked at him. Um, well she is somewhat immature. But at the same time she has a quick tongue, which would led Selina to believe she is quite young. "Sir, actually she reminds me of my age group. So I would have to guess around one hundred and twelve?" That was young for a sphinx right?

highjinx 05-15-2011 03:31 AM

Sphinxes.

Lola scribbled the notes down as fast as she could, very intrigued by these creatures. Maybe if she knew more about them, then she wouldn't have to play as background scenery and play the majestic Sphinx. HEHEHE. Then with a Sphinx costume, she could have easily fooled Rosie and then become one of her best friends in disguise! YEAH!

She leaned towards the Sphinx, inching nearer and nearer to her, studying her face.

"You're so pretty," she plainly stated.

All she needed was to sparkle and her face could have been fit for a vampire.

"Prettier than me even," she gladly accepted defeat, sighing--BECAUSE WELL, she was.

She studied not only her face, but her behavior. See, Rosie was clearly a HORMONAL teenager. That part she got. Very bossy. Very smart--or so she thought she was. Lola would know. She herself was a girl! Girls knew each other. She completely understood her, understanding how she disliked how they treated her like a hippogriff--Lola would definitely be offended if she'd been mistaken as a hag instead of a witch.

"You look like... I don't know, Rosi--" OH WAIT, RESPECT, yes Lola Jones was serious about befriending this Sphinx and her name was not Rosie at all, "Laaaaaady Rosamund. Are you fifteen? You look almost my age. You're sixteen aren't you? Or seventeen." Seventeen was as highest as she got.

HaRoHeGiNeLu 05-15-2011 03:32 AM

Hmmm. Ellie studied Rosie's face, though it felt QUITE rude (not that she hadn't been doing so all class so far), for a while.

"Well, she's not OLD." Ick. "But she's not ickle. She's like...our age, no?" Then again, Sphinx years could be TOTALLY different from human's.

SPOILER!!: Professor Lachlan MacFusty

"I do, but I can see that you do not." She wagged her tail, and her mouth twitched at the corners at the boy MacFurry had referred to... as.... what was it again?

"Precisely, Hannah." Hannah. That WAS her name, right? Lachlan was positive it was something with H but what if it was Heather or Heidi?

He'd just call her Miss Malfoy from now on.

No? No? Most likely not. He smiled at the boy all the same, patted his shoulder a couple of times and then moved back towards the stool he'd previously been sitting on. "Is everyone ready to share their thoughts about Sphinxes? If you are, please raise your had and do it." Lachlan flicked his wand toward the blackboard and erased what had previously been written on it.

Rosamund wagged her tail and stared levelly at the young girl. "The first thing you should learn, young one," And she was being quite the hypocrite, seeing that Rosamund was quite young herself, too. "Is that my kind does not accept nicknames from most. They are unwelcome and frowned upon by us."

Suddenly, he remembered the blackboard and all the notes he'd appointed there. "Make sure you scribble down those characteristics if you don't have them already." They would be in the final. Maybe. Possibly.

Tayla raised her hand straight away.

"Hello there Professor MacFusty and...Rosamund. I'm Tayla Barnhill. First year, Gryffindor," she said politely, trying hard not to be nervous. "I know that sphinxes are h-highly intelligent.
