Gone were the breezy Fall days that Professor Hadley enjoyed the freshness of, as the windows in the Arithmancy classroom were closed tightly to seal off the cold Winter air. This, however, had the downside of making the room feel slightly stuffy, but it was either that or have the kids freezing during the whole time they were in her lesson.
Desks were spaced apart today, in Fina's effort to maybe allow the students some breathing air. Standing by the doorway today, she smiled as the students began slowly filtering it. "Good afternoon. Please take your seats and take out your textbooks, quill and parchment," Hadley would say to ever few group of students, smiling politely as she did so.
ooc: Lesson will officially begin in a ~14 hours. Remember that even if I'm not here, Hadley still is, so don't do anything you wouldn't want her to see. ooc: Sorry about the delay. Okay, the first challenge number didn't look to hard the way Penny did it. Presley dipped her quill in her ink, and began calculating hers.

Alright, this really was harder than the pinnacle numbers, especially since she hadn't done these Challenge numbers before. Were they supposed to keep the negative signs for the final answer? Especially when calculating the third challenge number? Or just leave them off entirely since it didn't matter if it was a positive or negative in the end.
Unless she did the calculations wrong, considering it only said to subtract the two numbers, yet in the book, the equations for both the pinnacles and challenges were just a little different from one another. What if they wrote the book wrong? Eh well, Hadley would tell her if she were wrong. Meh, being wrong. Not cool.

Uhh now challenge numbers? This was getting soooo messed up in Helena's head. But... calculating these challenge numbers was pretty much the same thing as calculating the pinnacles, right?
Uhh... she had some negative challenge numbers. "Professor?" Helena asked, with her hand in the air. "Is it alright if some are negative?" Or maybe she didn't do something right?
Eino jumped down from his seat and ran to the board, flailing his arms around, nearly beheading half of the class, and tripping on his untied shoelaces twice. But he made it. Without further ado, he began writing his equation on the board, and solving it.
He first wrote down the numbers he was using, then proceeded with the calculation. After using his ever so handy fingers to count he concluded his not so challenging challenge number calculation.

Realising his hand was still up which was pretty unnecessary since the professor had heard that he was volunteering, Josh lowered it quickly and looked around if that had taken anyone's attention. He must have looked stupid doing that but there was no one around laughing or snickering at him. So fine. Fine for those people actually, for their own well-being. He was already irritated by some certain person and he did not need another.
Ooooh...the professor had chosen him! For the fourth challenge number. Good. Smiling at the woman some, the lion boy rose from the chair and walked to blackboard standing beside Evelyn.

Eh...he needed to calculate that number, right...yes. So, taking his eyes off someone else, Josh looked at the blackboard instead and started his work.

That meant that Hadley couldn't make them do MORE calculations. "PEOPLE! Keep asking questions!" Legend said loudly. Making a line between his Pinnacles he began to write out his Challenge Numbers.

Make sure you reduce that 13, as you did before, but also it's year of birth minus the month." Writing these numbers backwards was a common error.

Another repeating number? That was a sign he had done it right....right? Hopefully. The whole negative number thing made it seem wrong.
"You should reduce the 14 to a single digit for your second and fourth challenge numbers before you do the subtraction." Because that was how they did things in numerology; reduce first. Not to mention there was no 9 challenge number. "So your second through fourth numbers are incorrect." But at least he didn't record the numbers backwards.

"Doesn't matter really, but for consistency sake, you should write the calculation out as one minus nine, since that's the way the equation is written in the textbook," Fina explained, noting the confusion on the young claw's face.

After a few minutes of work and hardly any crossouts and mistakes, Riley had finished calculating each of his four Challenge numbers. Feeling quite accomplished with himself, the seventh year sat patiently in his chair, awaiting Professor Hadley to come over and check his work--he was only fidgeting minimally from excitment.

Once Professor Hadley had looked over her Pinnacle calculations, Vashti flipped open her textbook and went through the pages until she got to the one with the Pinnacle number meanings. She began jotting down the meanings on her parchment, only partially aware of what she was writing down. She frowned down at her notes when she heard points being taken from Ravenclaw thanks to Ellie. It wasn't too bad really, only a few points, but still. Any points taken at all were not good, especially since they were in third place. But oh well... Nothing to be done about it now.
Once she'd finished checking the meanings, frowning at them too once she read over them as they weren't all that great (especially number seven telling her to be a loner, pffft), she quickly scribbled down the cycle duration stuff for each pinnacle then looked up as they seemed to be moving on. To challenges, of all things. Great.
They didn't seem that, well, challenging, though. What was so hard about simple subtraction? Maybe a tad confusing, what with possible negative numbers and flip-flopping the places of what to add/subtract, but not really all that difficult.

After a few minutes of work and hardly any crossouts and mistakes, Riley had finished calculating each of his four Challenge numbers. Feeling quite accomplished with himself, the seventh year sat patiently in his chair, awaiting Professor Hadley to come over and check his work--he was only fidgeting minimally from excitment.
Pausing at the seventh year's desk, Fina was about to say good job, when she noticed something that wasn't really major. "It doesn't really appear to make a difference in this case, but the formula for the fourth challenge number is actually year of birth minus month of birth." And you know, he wrote it backwards and all.

Hm... well Penny had been off to a good start; of course the girl was only a first year, so Fina should have expected something to trip her up. Like the challenges. "Good, sort of. Except for your second and fourth challenge numbers, you'll want to further reduce your birth year down to a 2 before you subtract either your day or month of birth." Which meant her third challenge was wrong too, but surely the girl would pick up on that. Maybe?

"Good, except it's always a good idea to write out what the formula is for each calculation before the actual calculation. Showing as much work as possible helps to eliminate errors, or at least be able to identify an error easily when it crops up," Fina suggested to the first year. "Basically showing work is always good when you're learning."
