SPOILER!!: Riley, Professor Hadley, Evelyn XD Josh knew he, himself, already enjoyed Arithmancy pretty much especially the calculating part though sometimes he could get things wrong which happened mostly when he was feeling distracted or slightly sick as he did right now. But whenever Evelyn looked like she was enjoying it was well, the Gryffindor enjoyed it even more. Arithmancy was a cool subject! Indeed it was! Smirking at the fact that Evelyn had previously beaten him, Josh turned to look at his beloved she-snake only to find she was looking at him as well...but then apparently her gaze had moved to somewhere else and, this making it the most annoying moment of the day for him, he saw Riley at the point she was looking at smiling at his girlfriend!!! *GLARE* Did not that coward have a brain? Had not he learned that he HAD TO stay away from his beloved if he wanted to remain ALIVE!! Josh had already suffered another detention while trying to show Riley that fact and he was still staring and smiling at Josh Carter's girlfriend? Of course, Professor Hadley's next words with her next question had come to his ears but the seventeen year old was unable to take his eyes and mind from the exchange between Evelyn and Riley. And yes...it was an exchange now since she smiled back at him!!!! Groaning some, Josh gave Riley his best DEATH GLARE when the other lion boy now turned to look at him. Yeaaa, that was a death glare Riley Sinclair and you knew what it meant. You knew that!!! ''I think you subtract instead of adding this time while calculating...stuff'' he told to the professor whatever had remained in his mind from what he had previous read from the book, in order to keep his mind away from all the plots about turning Riley into a mural on a wall near the Gryffindor tower by beating him up. However, though he spoke to the professor, he was still glaring at the other Gryffindor boy with wildly narrowed, shining dark brown eyes. If he did just another SLIGHT move, he did not care whatever it would be, towards Evelyn, he was GOING DOWN!! |

Huh. The Challenge Number? You don't say. Legend's hand shot up once Hadley asked another question, even though some students already answered. "Professor! What she- he pointed to the Slytherin, whos name he couldn't quite remember at the moment. -just said." |
Eino had never heard of a challenge number, but according to what his classmates had mentioned, Eino was able to deduce that they were not fun, and indeed challenging to calculate. It was only natural for him to think that, since there are peaks in a person's lifetime, there would also be a few lows, and these were what the challenge numbers identified. He flipped through his textbook until he found them on chapter twenty-three. Apparently they weren't the low points of a person's life but rather, as the name suggests, challenges a person must overcome in order to reach the highest point. Well, calculating them would be challenging enough, so they better have cauldron cakes for dessert tonight. His classmates were right, they were similar to the pinnacles but instead of adding they had to subtract the numbers. That didn't seem too challenging. |
SPOILER!!: Smart kiddies "Yes, you all are precisely right!" Even you, Legend, with your agreement with everyone else. "With the challenge numbers, we use subtraction!" Probably one of the only numbers that we do that for... Now Riley brought up another good point. "If you get a negative number, which is extremely likely, then it's fine. Just take away the negative sign and its positive. It means something, but we won't worry about for now..." Right then. "Can I get four volunteers again, please? Preferably different from before and again, one from each house... Age isn't of concern as long as you feel confident in your ability to attempt these difficult calculations." |
Penny stuck her hand in the air.... "Professor, I can do it Hufflepuff..if no-one else does". bringing her hand down again... |
Eino raised his hand, then placed the same over his heart. "I solemnly swear that feel confident in my... what you said." He said nervously, and gulped. Well, he didn't really, but he had to learn. Hopefully that wouldn't hinder his chances, then again it wasn't like hands were shooting in the air. Maybe he shouldn't have volunteered after all... Too late now it was time to grab the Unicorn by its horn and make it drink pumpkin juice! Or whatever the saying was. |
Having given her answer, Evelyn took the opportunity to glance over to Josh again, yet, he didn't look as happy as he did before. And the reason was...Uh. He couldn't be mad over a simple exchange of smiles, could he? Apparently. Hearing the request for volunteers, the Slytherin waited a moment or so before raising her hand. She didn't volunteer for the last time, but might as well this time. "I'll volunteer, professor." Wait, what were they doing? |
Pres wanted to volunteer. She was awful at arithmancy. She raised her hand halfway, and pulled it down as fast as a blink when Eino volunteered. He would know what he was doing tons more than Presley would. She would just do her calculation on her private parchment, and verify what they wrote on the board. That was th best option for everyone. Presley would probably hopelessly confuse the entire class. |
Gwen remembered that the last time she somehow ended up volunteering it didn't turn up so bad, so she was confident she could do it again. Why not?, the young Ravenclaw asked herself. |
William raised his hand. " I will try to get the Challenge Number" Willaim told the professor. |

Roderigo spun around in his chair. It was Riley Sinclair, his Gryffindor pal. The Spaniard hadn't even noticed him in the classroom, and would have sat next to Riley had he seen him. He waved to him, smiling. "Where'd you see that?" he asked curiously, having not read about Expression/Destiny Numbers. Quote:

Be our friend, Salander? Text Cut: Hadley Oh, yes, Ellie felt people LOOKING at her. Nosy, nosy people. And, guess what? She didn't care. So they could just turn away and be good little students, mkay? Hey! An art class in Hogwarts wouldn't be such a bad idea. Not that Ellie was particularly artistic, but it would beat most of the other subjects taught by a longshot. Including Arithmancy. Ellie only took it because she LIKED Hadley. Ironic how the only Professor that ever takes points from her is one of Ellie's FAVORITES. She eyed the door when Hadley pointed to it, considering the option because, no, she didn't want to do calculations. Her hand automatically went to her cheek at the Professor's mention...before falling down onto the desk. Wrong cheek, Ellie. Heh. The door was still there, but she LIKED Hadley enough to walk out. So...she was staying. Just, maybe, not here. She needed a friend to help her. Where was Lola Jones when you needed her, eh? She did spy Salander, though. And he was older...wiser? Well, he seemed to know what he was doing...or was at least doing SOMETHING. And Ellie was going to go to him. Yup. It wasn't hard or anything, either, since she was textbookless and all she had was her quill and partially black parchment. Quickly, she moved to the desk beside him...Hadley wouldn't mind, right? And she scooted it over, much closer to see his parchment better. "Hi Sal... I'm lost." So, care to help a poor, innocent, confused little fourth year? Oh, he didn't mind either, right? Hopefully. So long as he wasn't going to volunteer for these Challenges. Meh. Like THOSE sounded any better than Pineapples. They sounded WORSE. Challenging. Meh. But Evelyn volunteered, so hopefully Ellie'll be safe with Sal. |
Quote:
And finally managing to look at Professor Hadley and doing his best to keep his gaze on her, fighting the urge to look back at every single minute to see if there were any more exchanges taking place between Riley and his beloved, Josh forced a smile and raised his hand kindly when Hadley had asked for volunteers from each house. ''May i volunteer for Gryffindor this time, professor?'' He enjoyed those calculating stuff, right? Maybe if he was a volunteer he could both help younger students deal with the case and distract himself from the thoughts of sending Riley to attempt to flirt with the Giant Squid instead, and not HIS girlfriend, by a nicely aimed kick at his back. ''May i?'' |

SPOILER!!: Treyen's Parchment It took him very little to correct that, and he was soon hearing about the point loss on Ellie's behalf. First Sierra, then Ellie. He only hoped Kurumi wouldn't be next. Then...Ellie went to sit by Salander? Blink. Yeah, eh...what about those Challenges, Hadley? |
I was sleeping...and clearly my brain still isn't on xD Kurumi had been so busy taking notes that she had missed when Professor Hadley had asked for volunteers. Seeing as two people from her house had already raised their hands, Kurumi felt that it was probably pointless that she offer herself up as one. Besides, Josh was at the age that Professor Hadley had been wanting for the first set of volunteers, so it was probably best to just sit this one out. Instead, Kurumi turned to her parchment and began her calculations. SPOILER!!: Kurumi's parchment However, after calculating the first two numbers, Kurumi stopped herself due to her own over thinking and confusing herself. Best to wait for further instruction from Professor Hadley at this point. But, Kurumi wasn't one to wait when knowledge was involved. "Professor, what happens when you calculate a number and it becomes negative? Do you just disregard that negative sign and apply the principle as if it were a positive?" Or was she CLEARLY over thinking things? |
Nika looked up at Hadley and waited for people to volunteer. Even if age wasn't an issue she certainly did not fell confident in her "arithmancy skills". Best that someone else that's smarter does it. |
Quote:
He nodded to the Professor making a note of it in his textbook, Riley was on a roll. He did not volunteer however, seeing as she only needed four and two Lions had already offered their assistance. Quote:
Quote:
"Yes, Kurumi, I was confused as well. But the way you are talking about is the correct way to do it if you get a negative number." He grinned and then turned back. See he could help people! |
Treyen Lockhart, too. ^_^ Sierra just looked forward with a facial expression somewhat similar to :whaa:. Her brain was dying, and that's all there was to it. She wasn't even sure what was going on anymore, but all she knew was that volunteers were steadily raising their hands for something or another. She was stressed... ...and so she sighed and put her head down on her desk. When she raised it again, she saw Ellie scoot closer to Salamander, and at first she just rolled her eyes in no one's general direction... ...but then she thought better of it. Hey, this Ellie Stone--again, she had the right idea! Why did Sierra not think too highly of her again?! Oh, yeah...right. Ellie had stolen her first crush away from her! Speaking of her first crush, thank you, Ellie Stone, for leaving your boyfriend wide open for me to scoot next to! ...and so Sierra edged her desk a little to the left, closer to Treyen, of course. BAHH HAHA! Take that, Kurumi Hollingberry! She looked up at Treyen and just gave him a little shrug. "Help!" that little shrug seemed to say. |
on my phone...so calculations will come later Kurumi smiled at Riley when he explained things to her, but couldn't help but blush when he implied the he had asked the same question earlier. "Oh, thank you Riley, she replied as she bowed her jead slightly. Yep, she was in over thinking mode and had had her nose too far in her Arithmancy book to have heard the explanation about negative numbers. She did notice Sierra suddenly move her desk closer to Treyen who was sitting next to her. Perhaps she too needed help with the calculations? Kurumi turned her attention back that her parchment so she could finish the task she had started. |
i see u too puppy luv funnies xD Alright! So he finally got the Professor's nod of approval. But then they moved on the next challenge which are... Challenges. Huh. SPOILER!!: Ellieness He starts flipping through the pages looking what that was about when he felt someone scoot closer to him. "Hey there Ellie!" he greets her, an amused smirk on his lips. Yes her lil coloring book comment didnt slip by him. Alas comic relief aint free "Lost?.... oh with them number crunching?" he said as he tilted his head towards the board. "Sure, will try to help you out, but I gotta tell ya lotsa stuff slip by me." Case in point... the small pile of crumpled up parchments beside him. |
Lucas watched as people volunteered to try the calculations. He wasn't confident enough to try to do it in front of everyone, but he still looked in the textbook and decided to try doing it on his parchment. SPOILER!!: Parchment Hmm, had he done that correctly? Better wait to see what everyone else did. |
Smiling to Riley once more before she completely returned to her notes, along with casting a quick smile to Sierra. It had been nice of the she-snake to help her clean up the mess on the 5th floor after all. Still, Kurumi couldn’t help but shiver a bit when Sierra looked at her. Kurumi looked at her parchment and wondered if she was supposed to turn her minus to, which Riley had explained should just be thought of as a 2, into a positive so that her third challenge became an addition instead of subtraction equation, but she smacked herself playfully in the forehead. Obviously, that would defeat the purpose of the exercise, wouldn’t it? SPOILER!!: Kurumi's parchment Setting her quill down, Kurumi felt a little unsettled by the results. Were her results implying that she just wasn’t going to learn the lesson that the number 4 was teaching her? Or was the number going to apply to her in a different way? Were her numbers telling her that she was at risk of growing a big head? MERLIN! Her brothers were right! They were always telling her that her head was too big. Kurumi set her quill down and hope that her calculations were right. Perhaps, the lesson she had to learn from the number 4 was just a very difficult an deep one? Kurumi thought that she already knew the importance of hard work - look at how hard she studied! Furrowing her brow a bit, she pushed her parchment to the side and began to ponder the possible meaning behind the predictions. Merlin...was she going to become lazy later in life?! |

And look at you smart Lions already attempting your challenge numbers on your own. Fina made a mental tab to check their works after the four students displayed their examples on the board. |
Nika waited for the volunteers to go and do their work on the board before she even started to work on hers. Even though some people looked like they were scribbling away and probably working on their challenge numbers she wasn't even going to try to attempt it. Arithmancy was too hard to be going ahead of the class. |

Penny made her way up to the front of the class, and over to the blackboard.. Lifting a piece of chalk, she started doing the First Challenge Number Quote:
The formula requires me to subtract my day of birth from my month of birth.. which is 05 - 05 = 0 My first Challenge Number is 0..." Then standing back for Eino, so he can start the second number calculations... |
Okay, the first challenge number didn't look to hard the way Penny did it. Presley dipped her quill in her ink, and began calculating hers. Quote:

Moving up to the board, she wrote out the equations first so she wouldn't forget before starting to move onto the calculations. With nothing mentioning the Destiny number, she almost forgot about her already. Thank goodness too. Evelyn didn't want to end up in a bad mood for the rest of the lesson. First Challenge Number Alright, this really was harder than the pinnacle numbers, especially since she hadn't done these Challenge numbers before. Were they supposed to keep the negative signs for the final answer? Especially when calculating the third challenge number? Or just leave them off entirely since it didn't matter if it was a positive or negative in the end.Third Challenge Number Unless she did the calculations wrong, considering it only said to subtract the two numbers, yet in the book, the equations for both the pinnacles and challenges were just a little different from one another. What if they wrote the book wrong? Eh well, Hadley would tell her if she were wrong. Meh, being wrong. Not cool. |
Uhh now challenge numbers? This was getting soooo messed up in Helena's head. But... calculating these challenge numbers was pretty much the same thing as calculating the pinnacles, right? SPOILER!!: more numbers Uhh... she had some negative challenge numbers. "Professor?" Helena asked, with her hand in the air. "Is it alright if some are negative?" Or maybe she didn't do something right? |
Eino jumped down from his seat and ran to the board, flailing his arms around, nearly beheading half of the class, and tripping on his untied shoelaces twice. But he made it. Without further ado, he began writing his equation on the board, and solving it. He first wrote down the numbers he was using, then proceeded with the calculation. After using his ever so handy fingers to count he concluded his not so challenging challenge number calculation. Quote:

Chloe really was not much into all this math but she knew she had to atleast try. They were on challenge numbers now, interesting. She listened as the professor explaned how it worked and then decided to try it herself. Chloe's parchment: Quote:

Ooooh...the professor had chosen him! For the fourth challenge number. Good. Smiling at the woman some, the lion boy rose from the chair and walked to blackboard standing beside Evelyn. *stare* Eh...he needed to calculate that number, right...yes. So, taking his eyes off someone else, Josh looked at the blackboard instead and started his work. Quote:
2057 - 8 (2-0-5-7) - 8 -10 - 8 ([-]1-0) - 8 -1 - 8 = -9 Meeeeeeeeh...that, to be honest, did not look so reasonable. Then, instead he was going to go with the one he had written on the board. If he was wrong, Professor Hadley would mention it after all. |
Moooore numbers to figure out. Hadley was really laying it thick this lesson. Legend picked up his quill and started to work out his own Challenge Numbers as people went up to the board. It really wasn't that difficult. Did people not know how to subtract? Why were they still asking the same questions? "People just listen." He murmured to no one in particular. Huh. But maybe it was better that they kept asking questions. That meant that Hadley couldn't make them do MORE calculations. "PEOPLE! Keep asking questions!" Legend said loudly. Making a line between his Pinnacles he began to write out his Challenge Numbers. SPOILER!!: More Calculations This wasn't that hard...yeah. Legend nodded. It looked alright. |

SPOILER!!: Riley's Challenge Numbers After a few minutes of work and hardly any crossouts and mistakes, Riley had finished calculating each of his four Challenge numbers. Feeling quite accomplished with himself, the seventh year sat patiently in his chair, awaiting Professor Hadley to come over and check his work--he was only fidgeting minimally from excitment. |
Once Professor Hadley had looked over her Pinnacle calculations, Vashti flipped open her textbook and went through the pages until she got to the one with the Pinnacle number meanings. She began jotting down the meanings on her parchment, only partially aware of what she was writing down. She frowned down at her notes when she heard points being taken from Ravenclaw thanks to Ellie. It wasn't too bad really, only a few points, but still. Any points taken at all were not good, especially since they were in third place. But oh well... Nothing to be done about it now. Once she'd finished checking the meanings, frowning at them too once she read over them as they weren't all that great (especially number seven telling her to be a loner, pffft), she quickly scribbled down the cycle duration stuff for each pinnacle then looked up as they seemed to be moving on. To challenges, of all things. Great. They didn't seem that, well, challenging, though. What was so hard about simple subtraction? Maybe a tad confusing, what with possible negative numbers and flip-flopping the places of what to add/subtract, but not really all that difficult. SPOILER!!: Vashti's parchment Now for the meanings... Though after what her Pinnacles said, she probably didn't even want to know what her Challenges were going to say. |
Quote:
Penny listened up when Professor Hadley had spoken.... Frowning now...Wait, Cipher Challenge...is that good or bad - hurriedly looking up the textbook to see why it was 'interesting'. SPOILER!!: Challenges Checking her work through, her only concern was about the second, third and fourth Challenge having the same number.... maybe her calculations weren't correct.... Penny was pleased though.... She hadn't expected to like this subject - but the past two lessons had been amazing - and now she actually enjoyed the whole maths thing :woot: |
Presley sighed. More maths. She did not want to do this, but more than that, she wanted the points for her homework. How on earth was she supposed to get straight O's without doing work? Exactly. It wasn't possible. SPOILER!!: Presley's Parchement Three of her challenge numbers were 8. Was this a problem? Presley rechecked her work to make sure she hadn't made mistakes. She couldn't find any, but all the same they were probably there. |
When the professor came by and told her she had a few mistakes on her paper she frowned slighly but was determined to fix them Chloe's parchment all fixed up Quote:

Quote:
No, actually, she wanted to do something. "That's alright. Any help's appreciated." She eyed his discarded parchments...but it was alright. Right? Some calculations were still better than none. So Hadley thought. |
First Challenge Number Novemeber 23 so it is 11-23= ( -12) Second Challnge Nmber Born 2063 ( 2+ 0+ 6 + 3) = 12 -23- ( Date of Birth) = ( -11) Third Challenge Number Second Challenge Number = ( -11) - First Challenge Number ( -12) = ( -23) Fourth Challenge Number. Year of Birth 2063 ( 2 + 0 + 6 + 3) =12 -Month of Birth (11) = 12-11= 1 |

Nika smiled then looked back down at her parchment to fix her third challenge number. Arithmancy is a challenge in itself. SPOILER!!: Nika's Third Challenge Number She looked up at her professor and raised her hand. "Am I supposed to reduce the 13?" She wasn't completely sure if she did that right. Arithmancy is not her subject. |

He then took out a fresh parchment and started plugging in the numbers, making sure that Ellie was able to see how he does them... SPOILER!!: Salander's parchment He leaned back in his seat and lifted his parchment slightly, looking at the result of the 3rd challenge. "Professor, what does it mean if the Challenge number equals zero?" |
OMG! *flails to catch up* Ugh. Ugh, ugh, ugh... When was class going to be over?! She'd had a terrible go at it this last hour--losing points, getting lost, and the such. What were they supposed to be doing again? Challenge Numbers?! ...what were those?! Blahhh... She scanned her textbook for the directions and then got started. Text Cut: Sierra's Parchment Umm...great. So what was she supposed to do about that negative number she'd gotten for the third challenge?! Did that even work the same? |
Quote:
SPOILER!!: Nika's Third Challenge Number Hehe fixed it :P |
Text Cut: Salllll Textbook. That was rather handy. Unfortunately, it was also rather large and troublesome. Friends were also rather handy. Especially friends that had textbooks. Sal was definitely one of those friends Ellie leaned over slightly to Text Cut: Math. That. Sometime, while doing all that Ooooh, Sal got zero? Yes, Hadley, what did that mean? In fact, what did any of this mean, really? Tell us that. |
Kurumi watched as Professor Hadley walked around the classroom checking on everyone's work, but she had passed by Kurumi's station and seemed to have forgotten to check what she had written on her parchment. Perhaps the professor had thought she wasn't done with her calculations since she had been writing furiously at the bottom of her page trying to figure out what the numbers meant, but Kurumi had given all the Challenges a go. Now it was a matter of making sure that she had done them all correctly and not made any small mistakes - which she was rather prone to when getting excited. "E-E-Excuse me, Professor Hadley," Kurumi said with her hand raised. "Would you mind checking over my calculations, please?" SPOILER!!: Kurumi's parchment |
Quote:
First Challenge Number Day of Birth minus month of birth 23- 11 ( 2+3) =5 and the 11 ( 1+1) =2. Second Challenge Number 2063 ( 2 + 0+ 6+ 3)= !1 (1+ 1)=2 then minus 23( 2 + 3)= 2- 5=(-3) or professor is it 5-2=3? Thrird Challenge Number 11 ( 1 + 1)=2 ( 2-5) = ( -3) (-- 3 + 5) = 2 Fourth Challenge Number 11- 12 which means 1+1=2 - 12 which is 1+2= 3 Now you subtract 2- 3 which equals( -1) or is it (1) William asked the professor. |

So hoping it was okay with Hadley, he walked back to his desk and sat down taking another parchment to calculate the other challenge numbers for himself. Quote:

SPOILER!!: Challenges (Corrected) When Penny had finished correcting her parchment, it hardly looked any better... wondering to herself "Hmmm, now I've got three's"... Sticking her hand in the air agian..."Umh, er, Professor, does this look right?" |
Quote:
So, she was right? Looking over to Hadley for a moment before back to her work on the board, she didn't question anything even if she thought it looked wrong to her but instead went back to her desk. "Thank you..." she muttered along the way. Hadley knew best! Now she just had to transfer her work on the board to her notebook, and finish the final challenge number. The fourth one she knew was not like the second, so no biggy! SPOILER!!: Second page of Evelyn's notebook With those done, she could sit back and just wait for whatever they did next, right? Or stare at Josh. Or do what that Ravenclaw girl did and start to black out a page in her notebook, but seeing as she didn't want to waste ink or lose anymore points...that unfortunately would not be done. Calculations were one thing in class, but sitting and doing nothing was like sitting in History of Magic class. It was boring. |
Catching uuuuuuup. I might've completely screwed these calculations up... tired. :( Iris watched as all the calculations were done on the blackboard. Subtraction was her weak point. She was TERRIBLE at it. Dipping her quill into her ink, the Head Girl put her head down so she could get these challenge numbers done herself. SPOILER!!: Iris's Parchment Putting her quill down, Iris picked up her parchment to double check over all of her work. It all LOOKED right... Hmm. Then, going to her textbook, she begun to read over the meanings of these challenges. They didn't seem... too... bad. Time to copy them into her notes, Iris figured. The tediously boring part of Arithmancy. Iris looked around the classroom once she'd done that, just watching the other students... Oh, Merlin... how she was going to miss all of this next year. |
Rebecca decided to try the Challenge problems, since they were supposed to be challenging. So she took out her parchment and did the calculations on the back, so she wouldn't get confused. SPOILER!!: back of page "Yes," Rebecca thought. "That seems just about right. Except, I keep getting six... Hmmm... I wonder if Professor Hadley would know why." So the little Hufflepuff raised her hand. "Professor, I have a question," she said. "I was wondering if you could tell me why I keep getting six for almost all of my answers." |
SPOILER!!: Prof It was? Eino looked at the board, then at the Professor. It was! Overjoyed, Eino returned to his seat and got to work as soon as possible. Before calculating his challenge numbers, he set up all of the dates and numbers he needed beforehand. He opened his textbook and placed it next to his parchment, just so he could consult it in case he got lost, which he would. SPOILER!!: Eino's Parchment One zero and three sevens? That was a lot of sevens? Did it mean anything when one of the numbers repeated itself? Probably not. He read over the meaning off number seven several times and realized that he had to make more friends, real ones and not just have imaginary friends. Well, what was he supposed to do to his imaginary ones? Plus, he could always put them in a box or in his pockets and take them everywhere. He couldn't do this with real people! Well, maybe, if he knew the right spell... |
too lazy to find your posts, Jess. Sorry xD Quote:
Roderigo smiled and waved back to his Gryffindor friend before turning back to his textbook. He flipped to the chapter on Challenge Numbers and gave a small glance at his watch. The lesson was almost over and he needed to finish calculating his numbers. He hurriedly began scribbling along his parchment while glancing at his textbook every few moments. Text Cut: Roderigo's work Finishing in just three minutes, the Spaniard threw his quill down on his desk, and sighed, his face sitting in his splayed hands. After taking another deep breath, he looked up and double checked his work for mistakes. |
Lucas raised his hand. "Have I done these correctly, Professor?" he asked. After that one mistake, he wasn't sure whether he'd gotten it right or not. He'd started working before the people doing the examples had even gone up, and he'd worked right through it, so he hadn't heard any explanations. SPOILER!!: Parchment |
Quote:
The movement of someone moving closer to him was what diverted his attention away from the piece of paper and to...Sierra. Wait! Was she asking for his help? He was no good in Arithmancy, that's why they were partners in Potions. He still smiled her way, a small smile, before she started to work on her own calculations. And he did the same. SPOILER!!: Treyen's Parchment Any of it right, Hadley? |
BAD post. It's 1AM, and I need sleep. SPOILER!!: Katie's Arithmancy Journal Katie had gone quiet after returning to her seat, focused more on figuring out her pinnacles and finding the textbook interpretation of them while she tried to listen to Hadley and the other volunteers. It didn't work out so well, because she kept tuning out the classroom in favor sorting out her calculations and pausing at other long moments to listen and catch back up with what they were working on now. Katie positively frowned at her Arithmancy textbook and the description of her pinnacle numbers, unsure of what to make from them. She didn't have a chance to worry about that, though, as they were working on another set of numbers now. Professor Hadley would be getting another visit from her in the very near future. Casting her dark eyes toward the blackboard once more, Katie shifted in her seat and lowered her gaze to her journal, setting to work on their last problem: SPOILER!!: Katie's Arithmancy Journal ... Her second challenge number was zero, and her third challenge number negative three, because THAT made sense. Katie stared at her writing, re-read it, re-calculated, and merely stared until it started making less sense than it had the first time. Pinnacles and challenges only reminded her more of why she had barely passed Arithmancy in her younger years and why her and Hadley's visits had begun in the first place. Exasperated and tired of glaring at her parchment, Katie raised her hand. "Professor Hadley, I haven't the slightest idea what my second or third challenge numbers are suppose to be." |

Oh but what was this? He asked a question about the zero challenge number. "A Zero Challenge Number is also called the cipher challenge, which basically stands for all or nothing. Like the shape of a zero, its circular symbol can be both full and empty at the same time." Very interesting too that this would be Salander's final challenge number. Quote:
"So yea, just go through and double check the rest of your challenge numbers the way I described and then you'll be all set." Quote:

Kneeling down by the first year's desk, she borrowed his quill and began to write clearly on his parchment an example of what she meant: First Challenge Number = day of birth - month of birth"Making a new line for each reduction makes it easy and clear to work with the numbers," she said pointing to her example of how she wrote it. "So try writing out each of your last three challenges the same way, preceeding each calculation with the formula, as I think it will help you understand." Quote:

"Good job, dear," Fina complimented. "And no worries, just a tad bit longer." That was something that would probably make the girl happy. Quote:

Right then, class had gone on long enough. "Alright then," Fina said, addressing the class as she made her way back up to the front of the classroom. "If you're all set with your calculations, then you're dismissed but feel free to linger if you need to work on them a little longer or have questions for me. Homework will be posted shortly on the announcement board by my office and will be due in two weeks from when I put it up there." Because despite her not usually giving deadlines, this was a fairly easy assignment and thus a deadline ws necessary. |

Well... not exactly torture, but Helena's head might have made... BOOM! ... if they didn't stop calculating. Not that they had big numbers, but she found Arithmancy pretty hard to understand. And that's the reason she hates that she didn't take this class last year. Maybe it would've been better by now if she did. But anyway. The girl packed her stuff and stood up. "Goodbye, professor," she smiled, then left the classroom. |

"Great lesson, Professor," he said. "It was really interesting! Have a good evening!" He made his way toward the door and left the classroom. |
Penny put her quill, ink and spare parchment into her bag, choosing to carry her textbook.. Leaving the classroom, she smiled at Professor Hadley saying...."Thanks for the awesome lesson Professor"... Her stomach rumbling, she decided to get something to eat before going to divination... |
Finally! Not that she didn't like arithmancy, it was just difficult. Presley gathered her things, taking care to fully cap her ink this time, and stood. "Thank you professor. It was an intriuging lesson." Presley was sure Hadley hated her. And had since the start of term with their mishap that had screwed Presley's chances for ever becoming a prefect. But Presley was determined not to give Hadley any more reason to dislike her. She didn't have to be a favorite, just an in-between sort of like. |
Kurumi felt a wave of relief when Professor Hadley confirmed that her work was correct. Now it was a matter of making sense of the numbers, yes? Still, Kurumi felt that her brain had been overworked enough as it was with calculating 9ish equations in today's lesson. Did they usually do this many? All previous Arithmancy lessons tended to blur into one big SUPER lesson due to everything being interconnected. Leaning back in her seat as she listened to Professor Hadley dismiss class, she slightly cocked her head to the side to look at Treyen. He looked like he could use a cupcake. "I'll see you later then?" she smiled before she finished gathering up her things. She then went up to Professor Hadley and bowed slightly. "Thank you for the lesson," she chirped and then slung her bag over her shoulder. She then turned and began to walk out of the classroom. |
Nika looked at her calculations one last time before putting them away in her bag. She would need to practice her arithmancy before the next lesson because she was having some trouble with the math. "Thank you professor!" She smiled as she gathered her things and walked towards the door. "It was an challenging lesson, but it was interesting all the same!" |
Sierra too. Sort of. Quote:

But then Hadley dismissed the lesson, and he noticed Kurumi gathering her things, he should be gathering his own things, but he was too busy looking at her as she did so, and then smiled her way, "Yeah, later," because he needed to tell Hadley something else. And then Treyen placed everything inside his bag and walked towards the Arithmancy Professor. He was not smiling as he stood beside her, but there was a small hint of a smile there, "Professor," he started to say, before clearing his throat, "That...is not bribery, just a Christmas gift," he said, pointing at her gift, "I thought you may like it," he said, nodding once. |

Sierra looked up at the professor, a rather blank look on her face. What in the name of Merlin had she just said anyway? Blank look still spread all across her face, Sierra simply nodded and then turned back to her parchment. Why did Arithmancy have to be so blasted boring and difficult anyway?! Her eyebrows narrowed inward as she looked back toward her parchment. Let's see, Hadley had said number one was correct, ...but number two? Hmm... Text Cut: Sierra's Parchment Well, there was her absolute best attempt, at least; and now class was dismissed, so did it really matter anyway? Nope. No one had to tell Sierra more than once that she was free to leave. She packed everything into her bag and then stood to leave. Quote:
...and was he making plans to meet up with Hollingberry sometime later?! Ugh! Boys could be such rats sometimes! Treyen Lockhart was just a player, that's what he was! She regarded him with a split second glance then turned and walked out the room. |
Nodding at the few students that managed to squeak in a thank you for the awesome lesson or just a nice, friendly goodbye, Josephina couldn't help but swell a little in pride. At least some of the students seemed to appreciate her efforts. Quote:
"I... That's very thoughtful of you," she said, offering him a smile of gratitude. "Thank you." Another smile and after a moments hesitation, stuck her hand out for a handshake. |

She could say goodbye to any other gift if he was ever hugged by her. NOW, the Healer was a completely different scenario. She could hug him, he would never mind. "I hope you enjoy it," he said, with one nod, "See you around, Professor," and he finally started to leave the classroom. Always expecting that note that would tell him when to meet her for her flying lessons. |
