Default Arithmancy Lesson Two: Pinnacles & Challenges

Gone were the breezy Fall days that Professor Hadley enjoyed the freshness of, as the windows in the Arithmancy classroom were closed tightly to seal off the cold Winter air. This, however, had the downside of making the room feel slightly stuffy, but it was either that or have the kids freezing during the whole time they were in her lesson.

Desks were spaced apart today, in Fina's effort to maybe allow the students some breathing air. Standing by the doorway today, she smiled as the students began slowly filtering it. "Good afternoon. Please take your seats and take out your textbooks, quill and parchment," Hadley would say to ever few group of students, smiling politely as she did so.

ooc: Lesson will officially begin in a ~14 hours. Remember that even if I'm not here, Hadley still is, so don't do anything you wouldn't want her to see.
ooc: Sorry about the delay. Some things came up like me doing RL Herbology ;P But lesson has started now, so while you're welcome to join in, please DO NOT post your late arrival, but pretend like you've been there the whole time! <3
Notice: Jess has work this afternoon until like 10:30 tonight =(. So she will continue Saturday morning at approximately 8/9am EST. Thank you for your patience <3.

Simple really, and those who not believe that mathematics is so just do not realize how complicated life is. After all, the essence of Arithmancy is not to make simple things complicated, but to make complicated things simple.

Practically beaming, Kurumi picked up her quill and flashed a smile at Treyen who looked like he was about ready to check out. Giggling under her breath, Kurumi set to making her calculations and copying from her textbook the descriptions of each number.

SPOILER!!: Kurumi's parchment

Arithmancy Lesson Two : The Pinnacles
Kurumi Hollingberry // Gryffindor // third year
The Pinnacles a set of numbers to lead you to your greatest accomplishment. A pinnacle, but definition alone, is highest point of level. In life, this could mean a point were we are at our best or perhaps a point at which we have achieved one of our goals and are feeling like we literally are on top of the world. In Arithmancy, pinnacles are a set of numbers that will lead you towards your greatest accomplishment, a means to reveal your potential for achievement and success. They also show us what is possible for us to achieve in a given period of our life. There are a total of four pinnacles in a person's life and are considered long term.

Life Path Number
Month + Day + Year
May 12, 2061
(0+5)+(1+2)+(2+0+6+1) = (5)+(3)+(9)= 17 = (1+7) = 8

How to calculate pinnacles:
  • First Pinnacle = month of birth + day of birth
  • Second Pinnacle = day of birth + year of birth
  • Third Pinnacle = First Pinnacle + Second Pinnacle
  • Fourth Pinnacle = month of birth + year of birth

my birthday is 05/12/2061

First Pinnacle
(0+5) + (1+2) = 5+3 = 8
An eight in a Pinnacle position dictates a time for learning to handle the business world and any type of authority, and from that to discover your own sense of personal power. You will learn about money, power, authority, as well as the essentials of organization, leadership, responsibility, efficiency and management (particularly of financial matters). During an 8 Pinnacle, your judgment will be repeatedly tested during your opportunities to manage business and further your career. Recognition for your achievements are significant under this number. Home life may be of less importance under this Pinnacle, but that may be necessary to learn the important lesson - become your own authority and trust your true power.

Second Pinnacle
(1+2)+(2+0+6+1) = (3)+(9) = 12= 1+2 = 3
During this time of your life, you will explore methods of personal expression, dealing with emotions, the imagination, and the creative spirit. Early in life, this Pinnacle revolves around seeking an imaginative and productive career. The middle Pinnacles serve to deal with your feelings and learn to speak what is in your heart. Later in life, this Pinnacle revolves around friends, the gratification of life, joy, and inventive expression. Overall, the energy of the number 3 Pinnacle is calling you to find joy and happiness, inviting you to live with a positive, optimistic outlook on life.

Third Pinnacle
8 + 5 = 13 = 1 + 3 = 4
The 4 Pinnacle is an especially important time for constructing your life with solid, stable, long-lasting foundations. During this Pinnacle, you will be learning about persistence, hard work, patience, planning, organizing, and moving ahead with a methodical plan. As you learn these traits, you will need to apply them practically, putting your ideas into shape and creating a stable place for yourself in the material world. This is not a time of leisure, but is a demanding period requiring discipline, recognition of limits, and a serious attitude.

Forth Pinnacle
(2+0+6+1)+(0+5) = (9)+(5) = 14 = (1+4) = 5
Prepare yourself for change and uncertainty, while relaxing on restrictions of your past patterns to deliver you freedom and liberation. Many people don't like change, so if you're one of these people, this time can be very unsettling, filled with restlessness, activity, and public life. Changes in attitudes, career paths, and business decisions that are forward thinking favor sales and promotions and do well under this 5 energy. Learn during this time to avoid impulsive choices, especially the urge to quit and leave. The major attainment is to learn to be flexible and adaptable.

Finishing her calculations, Kurumi sat back and looked at her parchment for a moment trying to make sense of it all. Which pinnacle was she in right now? She supposed that that would come with Professor Hadley's next words, so she sat back for now and glanced at Treyen who seemed to be struggling a bit. Giggling once more under her breath, Kurumi not-so-subtly pushed her paper towards him with her elbow and kept her gaze looking forward as her cheeks flushed a rosy pink.

He saw that! He noticed how Kurumi oh-so-purposefully placed the parchment in a way that it could be easily seen from where he sat. He chuckled. Treyen wasn't copying from her parchment.

Not after he said he didn't do that.

He still kept on trying to come up with the calculations by himself, and copying looking up to the volunteers' calculations.

And....oh. She had a minor miscalculation. Well, that happened to everyone. It's not like he was going to stop hanging around Kurumi just because she had only little number wrong.

Hmm... Surprisingly, well. "But at least it's good to know your cheekiness doesn't interrupt your ability to do Arithmancy." Or draw hearts. Yes, we see it down there on your parchment.
His attention was lost from his parchment as...whaaaat? Sierra lost points? What for? She'd done nothing. Nothing that he heard of, but Hadley seemed to be eyeing the girl's parchment with great intent.

Treyen actually wondered what was written there, though.

After being glared many times by the Slytherin girl, he decided to turn back to his parchment almost instantly, and kept on working on the oh-so-long calculations.

SPOILER!!: Treyen's Parchment
Life Path Number.
DOB: April 10, 2059

(0+4) + (1+0) + (2+0+5+9) = 4 + 1 + 16
5 + 16 = 21 = 2 + 1 = 3

THREE (3): Your path will entice you to be both spontaneous and creative, to live your life with joy and imagination. You will learn the benefits of optimism and enthusiasm, and how to express your emotions and exuberance. Once you've mastered these concepts, you'll move on to the next phase - inspiring others. You're a born communicator and your wit and lightheartedness will help others see the joy in any situation. Artistic, creative, and articulate are words to describe someone with a 3 Life Path. Career/vocation options should relate to anything artistic - writing, speaking, designing, illustrating, dancing, etc.

Pinnacles.

First Pinnacle

(0+4) + (1+0) = 4 +1 = 5

FIVE (5): Prepare yourself for change and uncertainty, while relaxing on restrictions of your past patterns to deliver you freedom and liberation.

Second Pinnacle

(1+0) + (2+0+5+9) = 1 + 16 = 17
1 +7 = 8

EIGHT (8): An eight in a Pinnacle position dictates a time for learning to handle the business world and any type of authority, and from that to discover your own sense of personal power.

Third Pinnacle

5 + 8 = 13 = 1+3 = 4

FOUR (4): The 4 Pinnacle is an especially important time for constructing your life with solid, stable, long-lasting foundations.

Fourth Pinnacle

(0+4) + (2+0+5+9) = 4 + 16 = 20
2 + 0 = 2

TWO (2): Your greatest attainment will be to learn how to have
harmonious relationships without sacrificing yourself. The number 2 Pinnacle represents unions, partnerships, patience, and fairness, with a focus on working as a team. During this time of your life, you may be learning to cooperate, share, and be considerate of others. The 2 Pinnacle may be a time where you will find achievement in fields of work where precision and detail are valued because you have a natural gift for relating facts, gathering and perfecting details, and knowing what's correct and right.

Was it all right, though? It probably was, he couldn't be THAT awful at math. After all, they weren't interpreting way too much.

It certainly seemed like there was something on his mind. Kurumi smiled at him faintly before turning her eyes back to her own paper and biting her lower lip shyly.

"If you want to talk...numbers....we can after class," Kurumi whispered, hoping that he was able to figure out that she wasn't exactly hoping to discuss pinnacles in the library.
He wasn't startled at all, because her soft tone was heard just after he was done writing in his parchment.

Treyen still had a slight frown on his face from the Arithmancy work, and then smiled as Kurumi whispered something to him. Numbers? She surely meant just to talk, but disguised it because of Hadley, "Of course, Kurumi, after class," he said, and added a small wink.

"Ellie Stone!" Hadley exclaimed, putting one hand on her hip, as she walked over and stared down at the fourth year eagle. "What in the name of Merlin do you think you're doing?!" Yes. You best have a good explanation, young miss. You're delaying the class.
He was about to mention something else when the heard Hadley exclaim a name that he liked so very much, though, he preferred Eliana Stone, and turned his head around just to see what Hadley was talking about, and to see if Ellie was alright, of course.

And...she seemed to be doing NOTHING, Hadley. He raised his eyebrow at the Professor, because he was clearly confused as to what was going on.

First Sierra, now Ellie?

He took out another fresh parchment and corrected the third pinnacle. Looking up at the Professor he grins "Guess those 11s really like me."

Nailing the Master Number twice. Imagine that.

He still doesnt know what message he's supposed to inspire other with though other than Party Hearty.

Yeah...That was enough to break her concentration bubble. Not enough to make her jump or anything...it didn't scare her. Ellie's quill froze in midair and she bit her lip as she raised her eyes up to Hadley's.

Heh...

"Making the parchment black...?" That was her goal at least. But...maybe it wasn't such a good idea? She looked back down at her parchment, and slowly dropped her quill into the inkwell, letting it rest. It could stay there for now.

Sure, the ink got on the desk while she was doing the edges, but no one would ever really notice, right? And she was already on the third line. Maybe...just maybe she'd get the entire parchment covered by the end of class. Or at least half of it. Maybe.
Were they supposed to be working on something? Sierra really had no idea. She'd pretty much felt like spitting venom ever since the professor decided to dock three points from her.

This Ellie Stone, though, she had the right idea. Why do calculations when you can find another perfectly acceptable use of your time? It was also far less embarrassing than writing the name Treyen inside a heart and having the professor end up catching you...

Bwah haha!

Cancel that. Take off five points! Gooo, Ellie, go! Arithmancy had suddenly just gotten loads more exciting. Now all they needed was for someone to shoot a parchment airplane across the room, and it'd all be perfect.

Changes in attitudes, career paths, and business decisions that are forward thinking favor sales and promotions and do well under this 5 energy. Learn during this time to avoid impulsive choices, especially the urge to quit and leave. The major attainment is to learn to be flexible and adaptable

"But as for how to know when it is master number 11/2 or just 2, then its simple. If you reduce your components down to single digits before you add them together and then add each of the components together and get a master number, then you have a true master number. As for when its experienced as a two pinnacle, it really depends on where you are in your life, as when working at the level of the 11, its more spiritual and philosophical." And that sounds more complicated than it really was.
Roderigo looked down at his shoes as chagrin deeply flushed his face. He made such a simple mathematical error, in front of everyone. He shook his head after a few moments, and scribbled the number he got for his first pinnacle.

He also wrote down what Professor Hadley had told him about the difference between the master number eleven and the pinnacle number two. However, he was still a bit confused.
"So. . ." he said slowly, "I'm much more likely to get 2 than to get the master number 11, right?" He think he understood what she was saying, but it was just now beginning to get over his head. He folded up his now filled up piece of parchment and stuffed it inside of his pocket. He was going to ask her another question but she suddenly seemed distracted by someone out in the seats.

Eyes wide with shock, Roderigo leaned slightly to the right so he could see who the Professor had just yelled at. He had heard her right. It was that fourth-year girl who he had met in the common room, the one who hated Jacob Blunt and didn't approve of hand shaking. Feeling it was definitely not the time to pester Professor Hadley about his inability to understand master pinnacle numbers, the Spaniard hurried off to his desk, giving Ellie a fleeting glare, and sat down, taking out another fresh sheet of parchment.

"But your other calculations look good, yes."
"Oh. Whoops. I knew that," Lucas said with a small laugh. "Basic math skills escape me sometimes. Thank you, Professor!" He smiled. Master number, huh? Did he have one of those?! Time to recalculate.

Wait, 11 was a master number, right? Or something? He looked in the textbook quickly.

SPOILER!!: Textbook
ELEVEN (11/2): Visionary; inspirational; may have genius intelligence; seems more spiritual than others; dresses in an artistic, original, and inventive way; unconstrained; idealistic; has a zest for life; creative and innovative; intense; ability to manage details; super-sensitive; intuitive. You may seem overly dependent on your mate in an unhealthy way. You can also be seen as tense, depressed, or high-strung.

Whoa, cool! He had a master number. Did that make him awesome? Well, actually, it kinda made him sound sort of weird. But that was okay, he guessed.

"Hmm... Breaking it up did make it easier," he said to himself. He looked down at his calculation to make sure he hadn't made any more stupid mistakes (like calling October the eleventh month...). "Is this correct now, Professor?" he asked while she was still standing near him.

She paused, unsure how to properly correct his final two pinnacles that he didn't seem to understand at all.

"Third and fourth pinnacles though... We're adding for pinnacles." Subtraction was next. "So third pinnacle cycle, the formula used is the sum of your first and second pinnacle numbers. Or 6 plus 4. And your fourth pinnacle cycle, the formula is your month of birth plus your reduced total for your year of birth." Pausing again, she looked. "So 2060, reduces to 8. 8 plus 5 for May, would be 13, which reduces to 4. Life path number is a calculation that is completely separate from your Pinnacle Cycle calculations." Fourth year. So one and a half more years with Simon, providing he didn't take or pass his Arithmancy OWL.
Simon looked at the Professor and smiled, he had got one right, surely he deserved a medal for that he had no idea how he had got that right, he hated this subject, if it was for the fact he had a good teacher he wouldn't bother turning up. "Professor, I think I get it now." Simon smiled. "So if the sum adds up too 17 then you would make that an 8?"

Mom says I have no sense of direction, so I packed my bags and right.

Oakey tried his best to follow all the numbers on the board. His eyes were dizzying but he needed to crack down and really get to work. So without any further delay he put quill to parchment...

SPOILER!!: Oakey's Parchment
Quote:
Life Path #2
1st(0-34)2nd(35-43)3rd(44-52)4th(53->)
DOB
4/13/2064
4+(1+3)+(2+0+6+4)
4+(4)+(12)
4+4+12=20
2+0=2

4-13-2

1st Pinnacle #8
With the first pinnacle featuring the influence of the number 8, you may become involved in business or commercial activity at an early age and face some restriction on this account. You are a very practical thinker at a young age.

4+13
4+(1+3)
4+(4)
4+4=8
2nd Pinnacle #6
In this period of your life you can progress and achieve through the acceptance of increasing responsibility and through diplomatic acts. Home and family with generally take precedence over business, however. It is a period for you to attend to the demands made on you for family and close friends rather than self. Often, the six pinnacle suggests a person who is under the close dictates of some authority figure.
13+2
(1+3)+2
(4)+2
4+2=6
3rd Pinnacle #5
With the number 5 pinnacle coming in mid-life, your ability to progress and achieve in may be linked to your ability to function comfortably in a fluctuating environment. Your ability to adapt is very critical. The sense of freedom that you have now is very significant. The caution here is not to burn too many bridges because of your urge for freedom, travel, and adventure. You may need that job (or family) later on.
8+6=14
(1+4)=5
4th Pinnacle #8
With the number 8 fourth pinnacle, business and position will make retirement at the normal age unlikely. Circumstances in the later years may be an atmosphere of status and power.
4+2=8

Oakey was glad he got the color changing Ink. He felt it made his work easier to follow...for himself at least.

After double-checking his math, he was pretty sure he'd done it right. So his life path was 4. What did that even mean?

Sounded interesting, he guessed... Sort of... Ish... Shaking his head slightly, he decided he should probably calculate his pinnacles since that's what they were supposed to be doing anyway.

Whoa, wasn't the 11/2 thingy like an overlord number or whatever they were called? Sam flipped through the textbook really quickly until he found it. Oh, master number. Right. Close enough to overlord number, he figured. Did this make him a master? Because he could live with that. Well, anyway...

Merlin's trousers. He was apparently going to have an extremely serious, stressful life. Basically everything said he was going to be responsible and should be an accountant or some rubbish... Maybe Arithmancy wasn't as accurate as the professors would like you to believe? He could only hope. He considered asking the professor, but he didn't want to insult her subject or some such thing, so he didn't. Maybe he could learn to live with being responsible? He didn't really know what he wanted to do with his life, anyway. Maybe he could be... Erm... A teacher or something? Education was mentioned, wa'nnit? Meh, he'd figure it out when it came to it...

Grinning with joy as Hadley was freaking out on someone else rather than him, he shot glances up from his parchment to the students in trouble in between problems. Arithmancy could be a bit dry sometimes, but at least Professor Hadley thought well enough of them that she included some entertainment for today's lesson.

Now he had to get back to work if he wanted to finish these calculations:

Quote:
Life Path Number:
December 12, 2057

(1+2)+(1+2)+(2+0+5+7)
(3)+(3)+(1+4)
6+5=11
Quote:
ELEVEN (11/2): Much is expected of you with this Master Life Path. Your path will lead you to illuminate humankind inspirationallly. Sometimes you will work at the level of the 2 to bring toward you meaningful associations so that others will find you accessible. Once you've mastered your lessons, you'll move on to the next phase - becoming an inpirational leader. You're a born charismatic leader, magnetic and electric. You'll often find yourself in the spotlight, as the center of attention. Your mission is to be someone others look to for illumination and truth, and the truer you are to Universal principles, the happier and more successful you'll be on your path. Career/vocation options include any field where you can be the teacher, diplomat, or speaker or any field were you'll be in the spotlight and able to work with large groups.
O___O This was awesome! These readings were definately true. Riley always knew his modeling career would help future generations and he would become the inspiration they need to become models aswell. Arithmancy was finally stepping up to the plate.

Quote:
First Pinnacle - [Age: 0-29]
Month of birth + Day of birth

December 12th
(1+2)+(1+2)
3+3=6
Quote:
SIX (6): A six in any Pinnacle position dictates years of responsibility, love, duty, and family. Learn to think of the needs of others, doing all the giving and being responsible for everyone else, and you may find yourself learning to love and care for not only others but yourself. Under a first 6 Pinnacle, young people will tend to marry too early and feel a colossal responsibility to the family. Regardless of which Pinnacle the 6 resides in, it is a time of home, children, and beautifying your surroundings, particularly through community and humanitarian service. This is a time for honoring what's in your heart - because it is there that you must be truly responsible.
And then Arithmancy just dropped down a rung on the ladder. Riley was in no way responsible for others nor did he care too often about them. He tried to at least come off as curteous sometimes but it was always too exhausting trying to be nice. He didn't know how Kurumi or others could do it, honestly.

Quote:
Second Pinnacle - [Age: 29-38]
Day of birth + Year of birth

(1+2)+(2+0+5+7)
3+(1+4)
3+5=8
Quote:
EIGHT (8): An eight in a Pinnacle position dictates a time for learning to handle the business world and any type of authority, and from that to discover your own sense of personal power.
And now it seemed to be right again. So unless he was going to be weak and allow others to take his focus away from himself in his early years this thing was confusing him. Well at least he saw the words 'money, power and leader' in this one.

Quote:
Third Pinnacle - [Age: 38-47]
First Pinnacle + Second Pinnacle

6+8=14
1+4=5
Quote:
FIVE (5): Prepare yourself for change and uncertainty, while relaxing on restrictions of your past patterns to deliver you freedom and liberation. Many people don't like change, so if you're one of these people, this time can be very unsettling, filled with restlessness, activity, and public life. Learn during this time to avoid impulsive choices, especially the urge to quit and leave. The major attainment is to learn to be flexible and adaptable.
Well Riley was just getting a bit ticked off now. He was sure he would keep up in his life very well, thank you very much! He would obviously just have to redo this number. It took him a minute and another scrap of parchment to realize it would be the same again.

Quote:
Fourth Pinnacle - [Age: age 47>]
Month of birth + Year of birth

(1+2)+(2+0+5+7)
3+(1+4)
3+5=8
Quote:
EIGHT (8): [/B]An eight in a Pinnacle position dictates a time for learning to handle the business world and any type of authority, and from that to discover your own sense of personal power. Home life may be of less importance under this Pinnacle, but that may be necessary to learn the important lesson - become your own authority and trust your true power.
In conclusion from all of this: Riley was sure he would die happy. That's all he really got from the excerise. Hmmm what's next?!

Third Pinnacle

5 + 8 = 13 = 1+3 = 4

FOUR (4): The 4 Pinnacle is an especially important time for constructing your life with solid, stable, long-lasting foundations.

Turning away from Ellie for a few moments as Josephina had noticed a few more students had finally set their quills down, the brunette approached to check their work. First, the Hufflepuff Prefect. "Er... your fourth pinnacle there? Is actually master number 11, because you should reduce each component to a single digit first and then add them together." Yup. She said that before, didn't she? "But otherwise, good job."

He took out another fresh parchment and corrected the third pinnacle. Looking up at the Professor he grins "Guess those 11s really like me."

Nailing the Master Number twice. Imagine that.

He still doesnt know what message he's supposed to inspire other with though other than Party Hearty.
Nodding briefly in approval when Salander finally saw his errors, she then turned back toward the girl coloring their parchment.

Heh...

"Making the parchment black...?" That was her goal at least. But...maybe it wasn't such a good idea? She looked back down at her parchment, and slowly dropped her quill into the inkwell, letting it rest. It could stay there for now.
What was up with the cheeky students? "This is not art class, Ellie, but Arithmancy. If you'd rather not participate in the calculations, then leave." She said, point toward the door. Of course it would cost the girl sapphire gems, but she wasn't sure those mattered to the girl. Not like Quidditch, anyway. "Oh and three points for your cheek." Honestly, it wasn't like the girl was a new student to Hogwarts OR her lessons; no, she was a bratty teenager instead

"So. . ." he said slowly, "I'm much more likely to get 2 than to get the master number 11, right?" He think he understood what she was saying, but it was just now beginning to get over his head. He folded up his now filled up piece of parchment and stuffed it inside of his pocket. He was going to ask her another question but she suddenly seemed distracted by someone out in the seats.
"Not necessarily" Josephina interjected. "If you have a master number 11, then it's an 11, not a two. But you might find yourself following some of the attributes that applies to a two."

"Happens to the best of us," Fina mused at the boy's comment on his math skills. "But yes, that is correct now."

"Professor, I think I get it now." Simon smiled. "So if the sum adds up too 17 then you would make that an 8?"
At first Josephina thought that Simon was trying to say he had an 8, but then she realized it was hypothetically speaking. "Yes, if it adds up to 17, then you would reduce to an 8 as that particular number for whatever you're calculating."

Oakey was glad he got the color changing Ink. He felt it made his work easier to follow...for himself at least.
Looking over the Hufflepuff first year's work, she shook her head. "Your Life Path Number should actually be 11. Because, per the textbook, you should reduce each component to a single digit prior to adding them together, which would sum 11, not 20." Now to check the pinnacles.

"And your last three pinnacles are wrong, as you've miscalculated the value of your year." Yea, it should be a 3, not a 2 if she was looking correctly.

Whoa. That sounded kinda heavy.

Another heavy one. Geez, was he ever gonna get any relaxation or anything?!

Noticing someone else had finished, Josephina glanced toward an unfamiliar older slytherin boy. Why had she not recognized him before? Strange. Checking his work, she nodded. "Very good, yes."

Right then, it probably time to move on. "If you need to recheck your calculations, feel free to do so at the end, but for now we're going to move onto another number that tends to work hand-in-hand with the pinnacles. This calculation can be fairly confusing as well and a bit more advanced, so if you're younger and don't feel comfortable completing it just yet, then you're welcome to just take notes." She paused and glanced around the room quickly before continuing. "It is a number that you must not overcome, but rather indicative of what you should become. Does anyone know what this number is?" For all you bookworms out there who read ahead in the textbook... hehe

Riley was never that good at Arithmany really and so when Hadley began to talk about a calculation that would be even harder than the ones they just did, the Gryffindor had to stifle a groan. Ooh it was a competition to see who could find it first!? Well it was to Riley at least.

Looking at his textbook he had no idea where to look so he just flipped it to the next chapter and shouted out the heading, hoping it was right. "Professor is it the The Expression/Destiny Number?" he said eagerly.

Presley flipped over a few pages in her textbook, and quickly scanned. "The destiny number." she said confidently. Well, that was the first easy thing she'd done this whole class period.

Fina blinked as the first few people to speak up suggested one of the core numbers. "No, it's NOT the Expression/Destiny number. Think about another number that could be called a predictive indicator like the pinnacles." Tricky, tricky. Kurumi? Evelyn? Surely one of those bookworm females would know it.

Huh, Destiny. Pffft. There shouldn't be a Destiny number. There shouldn't be ANY Destiny's! Destiny's were annoying!

IRRITATING!

"What about the Challenges number." she spoke up after raising her hand. All this talk about Destiny's had her slightly angry now. This was another reason she liked this class. Destiny didn't take it.

Hah!

Destiny number? C'mooooooooooon! What had the professor asked did not sound like destiny, did it? Well, at least not to Josh so he just stared around at people who answered it as that destiny thing and his focus was all directed back on Hadley when she said it was incorrect as well.

A predictive indicator. Related to the pinnacles and like the pinnacles. Hmmm. Should not be hard to find out. Taking a breath, the lion boy opened his textbook and simply stared at the next chapter after the Pinnacles one. Yeeeeees, this one was surely related to the pinnacles. Well...it was written there!!!

''The Challenges....'' so he said then quickly added ''...as it says here.'' since it was not from his own knowledge and he did not want to look like he was cheating when he was not doing that. Not at all. Yes again, he was a man of truth.

Ooooh wait...

Had Evelyn just beaten him to it? HAHAHAHAHHAHA. He really LOVED it when she did that...

Iris looked up at the professor, nodding at her answer. She wasn't really sure that "It's very likely that you're probably going to marry too early" could be misinterpreted in many different ways... Either way, Professor Hadley's words were somewhat of a comfort to her. The Pinnacles were only guidelines, like Hadley'd said.

O___O

Whoops! Riley looked at the other two students who had said the same answer as he had and wondered if they too had just flipped over to the next chapter and shouted out the first thing they had saw like he did.

Oh well, he didn't have a clue what the answer would be then. He just sat there instead.

Ooh then somebody said an answer that sounded right, Evelyn. Riley turned around and smiled at her. The seventh year didn't know she was that good at Arithmancy, he had always seen the trouble-maker/cool side to her. The Aritmancy scholar side was a bit of a shock, especially since their Arch Rival Hadley taught the subject.

Ugh...then another voice spoke up. Josh. Riley didn't forget the incident in the Library not one bit. He turned his smile from Evelyn and just stared at the other Gryffinfor boy for a moment before turning back and saying nothing. Whatever. He sort of wished that answer was wrong now.

Oh and she had forgotten about Josh and Iris; they too seemed fairly competent in Arithmancy knowledge. As evidenced by the fact that just after Evelyn answered, they both laid their bets on the same number. "Yes, the challenge number is correct! It is this number that presents what is you must face in order to reach the highest peak of your pinnacle cycle. Like the Pinnacles, there are four Challenge numbers as well, which cover the same years as your Pinnacles, but there is a difference in how we calculate them which is what makes this calculation a bit .... challenging. Can anyone tell me what I mean by this? That is to say, how do we calculate them? Generally speaking."

Glancing over to Josh once he answered right after her, she stared smirked a little before just about to turn her attention back to the Professor. However, just as she did so, she saw Riley looking at her. Smiling back somewhat, the Slytherin started tapping her quill on her desk again. Smiling was fine. Right? 'Course it was. Pffft.

But, back to the lesson. "It's pretty much exactly how you calculate the pinnacles, what with the numbers you use, except you switch the two around and subtract them instead of adding them. Like, for the first number, instead of adding your month of birth with your day of birth, you subtract your day of birth from your month of birth." she said, right after raising her hand. At least, that's what was in the book.

As Professor Hadley spoke about the correct type of calculation provided by some other students, Riley flipped to the chapter labeled, 'Challenge Numbers' and once she was finished he raised his hand to speak. "Well professor it looks to me that you do the calculation about the same as the others except you switch the signs and instead of adding you subtract the two amounts you have. Which is a bit strange to me, what happens if you get a negative number?" he asked curiously.

Hmmm a smile. He wasn't asking for anything else, Evelyn and him were just friends. But a bit more to make hot-head Josh jealous would have been fun. He nodded back and then turned to face the front of the room again.
