Gone were the breezy Fall days that Professor Hadley enjoyed the freshness of, as the windows in the Arithmancy classroom were closed tightly to seal off the cold Winter air. This, however, had the downside of making the room feel slightly stuffy, but it was either that or have the kids freezing during the whole time they were in her lesson.
Desks were spaced apart today, in Fina's effort to maybe allow the students some breathing air. Standing by the doorway today, she smiled as the students began slowly filtering it. "Good afternoon. Please take your seats and take out your textbooks, quill and parchment," Hadley would say to ever few group of students, smiling politely as she did so.
ooc: Lesson will officially begin in a ~14 hours. Remember that even if I'm not here, Hadley still is, so don't do anything you wouldn't want her to see. ooc: Sorry about the delay. Taking another deep breath, Penny looked at the professor, hoping that what she had done was correct..
Such a lovely explanation indeed! "Yup, very good and number one is actually a very good first pinnacle because of the fact that it occurs when you're younger and so you're learning more about being independent." On your own. Individuality. Exactly what the young first year said.

Rebecca looked over her parchment, making sure everything was correct then decided t call over the professor, for a second opinion on the correctness of her answers. "Professor Hadley?" the girl said, raising her right hand high in the air. "Can you come check my answers, please?"
Looking over the girl's work who called over, Professor Hadley made a small face. "Looks good. But the only thing is that though it doesn't make a huge difference, you'll want to reduce each component to a single digit first. So in your second pinnacle for instance, your birth year, 2062, would reduce to a one, before being added to your day of birth, 10 which reduces to one. Reduce all components to a single digit and then add the components together, otherwise you might read a master number in error." Numbers that students always seemed to forget about; perhaps she should do a lesson solely on the energies of master numbers?

Gwen started writing on the board. One thing I don't get, she thought. How is it that I don't get what this stuff is all about, but manage to do it right? That's wierd!, she decided.

Presley rechecked her answers. 10? It seemed like a pretty high number, but Presley wrote it anyway. Maybe she was supposed to add it again? Probably. Presley finished up on her paper.
"Like you redid your 10 to reduce down to one, you'll want to make sure you reduce each component to a single digit before adding it to the next component," Fina explained. "And then make sure the final answer is reduced as well."

"Good job, Prefect Chosen," she commented as she looked over his work while she was waiting on him and Katie to get the chart up.

Eyeing the calculating Simon, Iris and the others were doing on the board and aroudn him in the class, the Gryffindor thought it would be good enough to distract himself from this not-so-nice thoughts if he had started calculating as well. Yes, that could work. So, grabbing his quill and pulling a parchment in front of him, the boy began working on his calculations.
Soo calculating the Life Path Number, it meant now he was done with this right? Eh. There was a problem though: He had no idea if his calculating was correct. He kew had made mistakes before. It was easy to make mistakes when deating with Arithmancy stuff yet, though he had checked them again, he couldn't see and fail calculating. Eh...done then.

One thing she had to give Josh Carter credit for was the fact that he TOTALLY had this Arithmancy stuff down. She'd blame it on his she-snake girlfriend (was that even the case anymore?), but even on homework and exams, the boy seemed to fair well on his own.
"Nice job, Mister Carter."Like always, she mentally added, not willing herself to inflate his ego more.

It basically tells you what rode you're going to follow in your life. It's the one where you add the month, day, and year where you were born, then reduce everything. Once you get the number, that's your Life Path Number, and the textbook will tell you what your number means for you."
The Prefect found that, the Life Path Number was one of the easiest things to learn. "The Pinnacles is what Hadley is trying to teach now. Chapter 22 in your textbook. They are suppose to tell your greatest accomplishment, or something of that sort. With the Life Path Number and the Pinnacles together you'll be able to tell at what age will the specific important accomplishments happen." That was how he understood. Legend hoped he hadn't explained it wrong or too confusing.

Choosing to ignore the banter between himself and Katie, she instead listened to his explanation. And then William's response. "For your life path number, dear, you'll also need your year you were born." She paused a moment. "So you you were born November 23rd, which is only two-thirds of the components needed to figure out your life path number. Reduce the 11 and the 23 each to single digits, 2 and 5 respectively, and then add them together with the reduced version of your birth year." Fina explained.

The Pinnacles a set of numbers to lead you to your greatest accomplishment. A pinnacle, but definition alone, is highest point of level. In life, this could mean a point were we are at our best or perhaps a point at which we have achieved one of our goals and are feeling like we literally are on top of the world. In Arithmancy, pinnacles are a set of numbers that will lead you towards your greatest accomplishment, a means to reveal your potential for achievement and success. They also show us what is possible for us to achieve in a given period of our life. There are a total of four pinnacles in a person's life and are considered long term.

Overall, the energy of the number 3 Pinnacle is calling you to find joy and happiness, inviting you to live with a positive, optimistic outlook on life.
Third Pinnacle
8 + 5 = 13 = 1 + 3 = 4 The 4 Pinnacle is an especially important time for constructing your life with solid, stable, long-lasting foundations. During this Pinnacle, you will be learning about persistence, hard work, patience, planning, organizing, and moving ahead with a methodical plan. As you learn these traits, you will need to apply them practically, putting your ideas into shape and creating a stable place for yourself in the material world. This is not a time of leisure, but is a demanding period requiring discipline, recognition of limits, and a serious attitude.
Forth Pinnacle
(2+0+6+1)+(0+5) = (9)+(5) = 14 = (1+4) = 5 Prepare yourself for change and uncertainty, while relaxing on restrictions of your past patterns to deliver you freedom and liberation. Many people don't like change, so if you're one of these people, this time can be very unsettling, filled with restlessness, activity, and public life. Changes in attitudes, career paths, and business decisions that are forward thinking favor sales and promotions and do well under this 5 energy. Learn during this time to avoid impulsive choices, especially the urge to quit and leave. The major attainment is to learn to be flexible and adaptable.
Finishing her calculations, Kurumi sat back and looked at her parchment for a moment trying to make sense of it all. Which pinnacle was she in right now? She supposed that that would come with Professor Hadley's next words, so she sat back for now and glanced at Treyen who seemed to be struggling a bit. Giggling once more under her breath, Kurumi not-so-subtly pushed her paper towards him with her elbow and kept her gaze looking forward as her cheeks flushed a rosy pink.
Another student that she expected to do rather well on her calculations. Glancing briefly at the third year lioness' parchment, Hadley frowned though as her hazel eyes scanned down to the third pinnacle. "Er... Kurumi dear? You've made a small copying error on your third pinnacle. Which is actually a master number." Yup.

Sophie finished her calculations and put her quill down, wiping away some small beads of sweat from her face. Taking up her quill again she copied off the description for each number. Done with her work she leaned back in her seat and waited as her peers around her still worked with their calculations.
Passing by the Female Gryffindor Prefect, Fina gave a quick glance over her work and then proceeded on giving her broken record spiel. "My dear, for your second pinnacle in particular and well most Arithmatic calculations, it's best advised for to reduce the individual components to single digits before you add the components together, for fear of mistakenly marking it as a master number. Also your third pinnacle number, you've made a copying error in your numbers..." That was it. She was sure the sixth year would figure out the rest.

Smiling at another young gryffindor girl (Sheesh! there were a lot of Lions!) she nodded. "Almost, except for your third pinnacle, you've overlooked the master number 11! Since the sum of your reduced first and second pinnacles totaled 11 prior to single-digit reduction, this is actually a master number!"

The pinnacles and life path number had been, so far, only numbers and calculations, but Ariadne was very interested in what they actually represented. Curious, as always, the first year Gryffindor raised her hand: 'Professor, what do we do after we have finished calculating? How do we interpret the numbers we obtained?' Probably a silly question, which older students knew everything about.
"You'll use the chapter in the textbook," Fina answered upon hearing another Lioness' question. "I'm getting to the interpretations in just a few moments though..." Patience young one.

"Yes, as Iris told you, your numbers are correct indeed. Seeing as these numbers are based on your birthday, depending on when you were born it is possible to have the same pinnacle twice." Fina commented. "However, there is the minor error that you --"and all your classmates"seemed to have overlooked which is the fact that your second and fourth pinnacles are actually master numbers."

Finding that her fourth pinnacle was 8, Iris grinned. Nearly all done, eh? Looking up at the chart on the board, Iris then matched her Life Path Number up to the chart, to see how long she'd be guided by each pinnacle. After reading the chart, she adding these details to the top of her page.
The Head Girl looked across the table to Fallon when she questioned her answers to Professor Hadley, and leaned over to look at the numbers Fallon had come up with. "Nuuu, that's right. You were born on the Sixth of the Sixth... Your second and fourth pinnacles will be the same." Iris smiled at her best friend, reassuringly. Fallon was way too smart to get the answers wrong! Especially with stuff this easy. "That might just means that you're not going to complete whatever you're supposed to do in the time of the second pinnacle, but you'll have time again to do that stuff when your in the fourth one." As odd as it might sound to some, Iris really believed in the things Arithmancy taught you. There was solid ground beneath the predicting; not like Divination.
She flipped open the book and looked at the meanings. 2 was the number Fallon got twice, right? Reading over that meaning, Iris frowned a bit. Eh... it was a bit of a touchy one to suggest that she might not get it right the first time she's supposed to... Ahh well. Fallon could decide if Iris was talking sense or not for herself.
Turning back to her own work, Iris ran her finger down the page until she found the meaning for a pinnacle of 6.
Iris didn't read any further than that. She just stared at the words in front of her.
"Under a first 6 Pinnacle, young people will tend to marry too early"
Reading and rereading that sentence, Iris blinked a couple of times. She always said she wanted a really big family, but the book worded it like marrying early was going to be a mistake! And besides, how could she marry too early? That was certainly something Aaron seemed to have no thoughts about... he seemed comfortable where they were now.
Either way, the pinnacle was suggesting that she was most probably going to be married with kids before she turns 33... and being honest, The Head Girl wasn't sure if she wanted to be ecstatic or terrified by that.
Though the head girl hadn't asked for confirmation or checking of her calculations, Fina gave her a quick smile to show her that she did well. Of course.

Usually there's some reason or other why this is necessary, but it happens and its probably more common than you'd imagine, actually"

Hmm, sounded pretty much like him. And he'd always sort of secretly wanted to be a writer... Well, anyway. Pinnacles. He looked up at the board to see what the examples were, then looked back at the textbook. Alright, seemed easy enough.
Okay, got it. Right? He looked up at the board to see the chart for what pinnacle occurred when. Hmm. Okay. His life path was 3, so that meant that he was in his first pinnacle until he was 33. It looked like that one was going to be full of "change and uncertainty." Wonderful. He wasn't much for big changes... Oh, well. Hopefully they'd be good changes? He had to learn to be "flexible and adaptable." Alright, he thought he was already doing a pretty good job of that.
His second pinnacle would be from ages 33-42. That one would be one in which he learned to become more independent. Okay, a little scary, but really not a big deal, right?
The third pinnacle would be from 42-51, and it would be full of "responsibility, duty, love, and family." Ooh, this one sounded pretty good. He liked the way this one sounded from the description in the textbook.
The last pinnacle would be from age 51 on. Okay, what would the last stage of his life be like? Time to be a "recluse and loner." Wait, was he gonna be old alone? He didn't like the sound of that. Although being a scholarly hermit sounded like it could be kind of fun... Right? Okay, okay, keep reading, Lucas. Great wisdom, huh? He liked the sound of that. Oh, alright. As the last pinnacle, it was full of "spiritual refinement and development during a time of inner analysis and developing of knowledge, which can be eventually shared with others." Ooh, so he'd be like a wise old guy. Awesome.
Hmm. Had he gotten ahead with the interpretations? There were other people doing them, so he guessed not. Well, alright. Cool. Pretty good life he had ahead of himself.
Seeing another Lion working hard over there, Fina strolled over to look over his work, starting with his life path. "Um ... you've messed up on your Life Path. October is the 10th month, not 11th. Not to mention I always recommend reducing each component to a single digit before adding them together, as you'll be more accurate over whether you have a master number or not," Which he did, of course, why else would she be pointing it out?
"But your other calculations look good, yes."

It is this reason, you need your life path number for the pinnacle calculations, as depending on that core number, relates to the age bracket your pinnacle cycles fall under." She paused, giving them a moment or two to copy this down if they choose.
"As you're all under the age of 27," or else you'd be out of Hogwarts, "Then you're all currently in first pinnacle cycle, regardless of your life path number." But it's nice to know what hardships await them and approximately when they should expect it, isn't it? Maybe. He re-read the textbook description for 11... ok so he didnt have too much of an issue with being compellingly different-- thats something he accepted very early in his life given his father made it clear that he wont. But bearing a message to spread amongst the people.... to inspire them? To do what... to party? Sure! But if it was supposed to be something more profound he's gonna need a bit more clues as to what it was than numbers scribbled on the board.

Kurumi blinked a few times as she listened to the decription of the pinnacles in relation to her life path number and she wasn't entirely sure that she understood it. Leaning forward just a bit over her desk to get a closer look at the chart on the board. "So...my life path number is 8..." she said, more speaking to herself than anyone else as she jotted down a few more notes on her parchment.

"Miss Dixon dear... you'll want to make sure you reduce each component to a single digit first and then add the components together and reduce to a final answer," Hadley explained, feeling a bit like a broken record. "Like for your first and second pinnacles, you've got two plus nine, which is a master number 11/2!"
"Good job, Prefect Chosen," she commented as she looked over his work while she was waiting on him and Katie to get the chart up.
"Yup, thank you, Miss Beaumont," Hadley said smiling at the seventh year.
"Good, good, dear." Hadley said, pausing at the young Slytherin's desk. "Just you might want to reduce the components to a single digit first, so you don't actually mistake your final answer for a master number." She pointed specifically to the girl's fourth pinnacle.
"Same thing for you, Mister Uronen. Reduce each component to a single digit first so you don't mistake a number for a master number," Fina said, pausing at Eino's desk. "Your second and fourth pinnacles though are actually master numbers."
One thing she had to give Josh Carter credit for was the fact that he TOTALLY had this Arithmancy stuff down. She'd blame it on his she-snake girlfriend (was that even the case anymore?), but even on homework and exams, the boy seemed to fair well on his own.
"Nice job, Mister Carter."Like always, she mentally added, not willing herself to inflate his ego more.
Another one who seemed to have this Arithmancy stuff down pretty well. "Very nice, Miss Greenwell," Fina nodded approvingly at the fifth year eagle.

So your birthday is April 19th, which is 4 and 19, reducing to 4 and 1 respectively. Adding those together, you get 5 as your first pinnacle."

Hadley was about to answer the first year's question to his house prefect when ... well, his prefect answered.

"So you you were born November 23rd, which is only two-thirds of the components needed to figure out your life path number. Another student that she expected to do rather well on her calculations. Glancing briefly at the third year lioness' parchment, Hadley frowned though as her hazel eyes scanned down to the third pinnacle. "Er... Kurumi dear? You've made a small copying error on your third pinnacle. Which is actually a master number." Yup.
Passing by the Female Gryffindor Prefect, Fina gave a quick glance over her work and then proceeded on giving her broken record spiel. "My dear, for your second pinnacle in particular and well most Arithmatic calculations, it's best advised for to reduce the individual components to single digits before you add the components together, for fear of mistakenly marking it as a master number. Also your third pinnacle number, you've made a copying error in your numbers..." That was it. She was sure the sixth year would figure out the rest.
Noting two confused expressions - one was no surprise belonging to Hufflepuff!Simon and the other belonged to a Slytherin girl who looked to be about the same age - Fina smiled as the girl admitted to being confusing. "About which part? All of it ... or ?" She could only help if she knew what they needed help on, after all. "And Simon dear? You seem perplexed as well..."

Which is also why she had mentioned toward the beginning of the lesson that everyone in this room (except her) is still in their first pinnacle; of that she was confident of.
Oh she totally needed to go over master numbers all over again as most of these students seemed to be overlooking them and not realizing when they had one! Smiling at another young gryffindor girl (Sheesh! there were a lot of Lions!) she nodded. "Almost, except for your third pinnacle, you've overlooked the master number 11! Since the sum of your reduced first and second pinnacles totaled 11 prior to single-digit reduction, this is actually a master number!"
"You'll use the chapter in the textbook," Fina answered upon hearing another Lioness' question. "I'm getting to the interpretations in just a few moments though..." Patience young one.

Fina commented. "However, there is the minor error that you --"and all your classmates"seemed to have overlooked which is the fact that your second and fourth pinnacles are actually master numbers."

Yea, which meant too that he had another master number, but he'd figure that one out.
Hearing a mumble from the other side of the room, Fina's hazel eyes zeroed in on Sierra. Was the twelve year old attempting to be cheeky with her? Stare. "That cheek, Miss Greingoth, just cost you three points." Now, let's how she did ...
Hmm... Surprisingly, well. "But at least it's good to know your cheekiness doesn't interrupt your ability to do Arithmancy." Or draw hearts. Yes, we see it down there on your parchment.
Presuming the girl meant third and fourth pinnacles, "Yes, it is possible to have the same pinnacle number twice. This, my dear, is called repeating a pinnacle cycle. Usually there's some reason or other why this is necessary, but it happens and its probably more common than you'd imagine, actually"
Seeing another Lion working hard over there, Fina strolled over to look over his work, starting with his life path. "Um ... you've messed up on your Life Path. October is the 10th month, not 11th. Not to mention I always recommend reducing each component to a single digit before adding them together, as you'll be more accurate over whether you have a master number or not," Which he did, of course, why else would she be pointing it out?

Roderigo smiled back to Professor Hadley, glad he had done his calculations correctly. Not quite sure if they were supposed to remain standing up as volunteers, the Spaniard ran back to his desk, picked up his quill and parchment and ran back up to the front of the class. He began scribbling down all four of his Pinnacles and continued with his life path number.
Roderigo lowered his parchment and quill, and looked at his first pinnacle. He had gotten eleven, which he knew was a Master number. But that in itself confused him, and he raised his hand slowly as Professor Hadley asked if they had any questions.
"Yes, Professor, I see that for my first pinnacle, I have calculated an eleven," he said. "I know that is a Master Number, but I don't quite understand something. The textbook says that the master number eleven can be reduced to the simpler pinnacle number, two. When does one make the decision to keep it as eleven, or to simplify it to two?" He lowered his hand as he finished asking his rather lengthy question.

He glanced back up at the board where a chart was being drawn by Legend and another girl he didnt know. He tilted his head curiously as he tried to take that chart in. So his life path number was 6, therefore he will be on his first pinnacle until he reaches 30? He re-read the textbook description for 11... ok so he didnt have too much of an issue with being compellingly different-- thats something he accepted very early in his life given his father made it clear that he wont. But bearing a message to spread amongst the people.... to inspire them? To do what... to party? Sure! But if it was supposed to be something more profound he's gonna need a bit more clues as to what it was than numbers scribbled on the board.
Apparently the Slytherin didn't pick up on the issue with his third pinnacle. "Uh... your third pinnacle there, should also be 11, because you should reduce each component to a single digit first before adding them together." That's why she put her components in parentheses; parentheses first, addition and subtraction later.

Ariella almost smacked her forehead. How could she be so stupid? She had read about master numbers before. "Oh, I didn't even see that. Thank you." Ariella said, correcting her calculations. Now she was ready to move on.
This was why Simon didn't ask for help, the professor didn't understand he just didn't get it and no matter how many times she tried it just wasn't going to sink into his brain, well he had to at least try for the Professor since she had tried.

Staring down at his parchment, Josh blinked at the numbers a couple of times as a weird feeling...as if he was struggling to be awake hit him in a sudden. He was kinda...exausted...but this was not the struggle of keeping himself from falling asleep. It was like his vision was getting blurred and he did his best to keep it right...so keep himselg awake. Rubbing his eyes with a single hand, hoping that it would help his sight getting better, he picked up his quill again just to keep himself busy with...something. He needed to keep himself busy with something. Or at least he thought so.
Hopefully, Professor Hadley's soft voice came to his ears providing him a bit of momentary distraction from the...odd and sick feeling. ''Thank you...'' he said smiling a bit and of course blinking repeatedly ''...professor.'' This was not working either. He had no idea what was going on but...whatever. Focus on the class instead!! See? He needed to deal with those interpretations and pinnacle duration chart.
Dipping the quill into the ink well, he took a deep breath to keep himself collected before opening the textbook to write down the interpretations for his pinnacles and the age chart for them.

Obviously just like Professor Hadley had just mentioned he was in the First Pinnacle and considering his mother's words...then he was only going to experience only the first one for he clearly remembered those words which mentioned him not living more than thirty. Heh. Not that he really believed that. But it was his mother and this was kinda...annoying...a bit. A bit though. Josh had always preferred sticking with the idea that no one could see the future before it was lived though. And about all those stories of prophecies and them becoming true like Harry Potter's...well...prophecies could be avoided and changed and...not be followed? Yea, just not follow them. They were all psyhological pressure to push someone to do something.
He knew he was going to die one day as everyone was but it definitely was NOT going to be when someone, anyone, had predicted it. He knew he was going to be 30, even leave that age behind, have a job and maybe a wife and kids. And mentioning wife, he could not help but automatically glance towards where Evelyn was sitting. Then realising what he was doing he turned back to staring at his parchment.
If only that odd blurry sight would go away.

Iris sat there, reading and re-reading her first pinnacle. Looking up, she raised her hand. "Professor... How... How accurate are the pinnacles supposed to be?" Yes. She just said it. For the first time ever, the Head Girl tried to doubt Arithmancy. Iris didn't want these pinnacles to be accurate... Mainly because of the early marriage thing, but also because of... well, because of the marriage thing.
Ellie had long since tuned Hadley out. Pretty much since she had called for volunteers. And then they all went up and did far too much math for Ellie's taste.
She was concentrating, though. On her parchment. She had, for some unknown reason, decided it would be a good idea to color her parchment black. With drops of ink. The fourth year dipped her quill into the ink, then let it hover over her parchment. Drip. Drip. Drip. And started over again.
Sure, the ink got on the desk while she was doing the edges, but no one would ever really notice, right? And she was already on the third line. Maybe...just maybe she'd get the entire parchment covered by the end of class. Or at least half of it. Maybe.

That was good news. He was beginning to wonder if he had already lived through all of his pinnacles and not even realized it. That would have been a bummer. He had to be born on the day and month with two master numbers. It was like he had been destined to be horrible at Arithmancy. He lazily flung his textbook open and flipped through the pages until he reached chapter twenty-two. The first number he wanted to check was his master number business he knew nearly nothing about. "In this Pinnacle, you possess a message to deliver to people and a desire to inspire those around you with that message." Ah, yes pogrebin awareness. He had always known he was destined to do that, too. He supposed dragon domesticating would have to wait until everyone in the whole and entire universe (and maybe in other universes, as well) was safe from the threat of pogrebins. He made of note of that, then copied other meanings he thought were relevant to him. Basically, just what he wanted to hear.

Very good! But your second pinnacle cycle you just need to reduce that 13 down a single digit, so 1 plus 3 is 4, which makes 4 your second pinnacle cycle." She paused, unsure how to properly correct his final two pinnacles that he didn't seem to understand at all.
"Third and fourth pinnacles though... We're adding for pinnacles." Subtraction was next. "So third pinnacle cycle, the formula used is the sum of your first and second pinnacle numbers. Or 6 plus 4. And your fourth pinnacle cycle, the formula is your month of birth plus your reduced total for your year of birth." Pausing again, she looked. "So 2060, reduces to 8. 8 plus 5 for May, would be 13, which reduces to 4. Life path number is a calculation that is completely separate from your Pinnacle Cycle calculations."Fourth year. Listening to what was being said, Simon wrote down the notes for the other three pinnacles and when he was ready, went to move on to do the other calculations to go with them. However he realized he should probably make note of his life path number to use that as well so flipping through his personal records he found the number in question.
Seven...he mused looking up at the chart copied onto the board. Coping the dates matching up with it down into his notes on pinnacles, the seventh year went to work on the math calculations.

1st Pinnacle (Birth – Age 29)

Develop your global consciousness, intuition, and love for humanity during this time. As a First Pinnacle, this may be a time of early losses that bring early maturity. In the middle Pinnacles, this is a time of giving back to the world. As the last Pinnacle, it's a time of completion and material and spiritual wealth. During any position, you will be required to forget the self and develop into a true humanist.

And this was the part she was a little fuzzy on. How to tell what years the pinnacles took place, yet with the chart on the board, it made a lot more sense. She had no questions on the pinnacles though, so she started to write down the age for each of her own on her parchment.
Although, the sudden raise of voice from the Professor had the Slytherin actually started. Wha? WHAT!? No...no wait, she herself wasn't the one in trouble. Pffft, the Professor got her all worried for nothing!
SEVEN (7): Your path will lead you to study, test, and analyze everything because you can't be satisfied with anything at face value. You'll seek the meaning of existence and will always be exploring mysteries and the unexplainable to find meaning for your life.
