Arithmancy Lesson Three: Heart's Desire, First Vowel, Cornerstone, & Capstone
Spring had arrived; maybe not per the calendar days, but at least in the way of the Arithmancy classroom and therefore Josephina's mental state. The windows were cracked open to allow the floral aromas to infiltrate the room, but also it seemed your Arithmancy Professor has been practicing her charmwork, as there were bouquets of floral arrangements floating above you around the room.
There was even a large arrangement on the professor's desk and then a single carnation on each of the student's desks, charmed to when you sit down and claim that desk as yours, the flower will glow to your house color (Slytherin: glow silvery-white, Ravenclaw: glow blue, Hufflepuff: glow yellow; Gryffindor: glow red).
"Good morning!" Professor Hadley exclaimed, feeling rather chipper today for some reason. "Take a seat, relax for a few moments, and we'll begin shortly!"
ooc: Lesson will begin in approximately 12.5 hours; Hadley is here, even if I'm not, so don't do anything you wouldn't want her to see <3Lesson has begun; please pretend as though you've been there the whole time! <3

Finally the three ones!
Hmmm... what did they mean? "The cornerstone is the first letter of your first name at birth," Helena said with her hand in the air, but she eventually let it down, "and it means the manner in which you approach... good or bad things," riiiight?
So... her first vowel would be E, her cornerstone H, and the capstone A, weren't they?
So the Y's were vowels? Sweet!
Since Hadley wanted them to define one of the terms, she studied them for a moment, and then raised her hand. "The First Vowel." she said with a little pause before continuing on. "Well, It's the first vowel in your name." That part was easy, but now for the difficult part. "And, um, its um, how you approach life?"

Blahh. They were moving on now, which meant more Arithmancy. Sierra flipped open her textbook, and again it made the sound like a brand new book being opened for the first time. Merlin. She should probably use her book a little more... She skimmed the page on the first vowel, capstone, and cornerstone.
Wait. What? ...
It was seriously that easy? With her eyes still on the textbook, as she was trying to make double sure she was reading it correctly, she raised her hand and said, "For the first vowel, you just...well, look at the first vowel in your first name." ... "...at birth," she added, just because that's what it said in the book. "The first vowel just sort of tells you more about your inner self." Er, maybe. "...and how you approach things."

But as Professor Hadley went on speaking a little gleam of hope appeared in the boy's dark brown eyes. Yes, that could be! So, nodding at her, the Gryffindor quickly began calculating the new version...with Josh instead of Joshua.
Well...now this was way better. Yup, better. It looked like it did fit better as he knew himself. But for some reason he was not feeling like he got the right number anyway. Because...because...eh. He knew why he was feeling like that Joshua was his birth name. Josh was only the shortened form of it that people liked to call him. So, the true name was Joshua, no Josh.
THEN SCRATCH IT ALL!!
Sighing with anger Josh scratched all the words and numbers on the parchment all in a sudden
And what the Arithmancy professor said next did not help him at all. Innermost desires? Innermost? Desires? Seriously? Taking a deep breath, he looked up at the woman, disappointment could be read all over his face. ''But professor, that makes it only worse. I don't want to be a person whose innermost desire is THIS...'' he waved the original parchment wildly in his hand at this point. ''...i would prefer jumping off the Gryffindor tower!''
And here he might be whining over the number yet...the class was going on with the next question Hadley had asked. But, Josh had no apetite left for the class right now for one of his favourite classes had just betrayed him.
Was it just her or did Josh Carter seem actually upset over his number? Staring at the sixth year as he was raising a stink about his numbers, she frowned. "Maybe you can't see it now, but your heart's desire isn't even your life purpose or anything." Why were they arguing over this? "Besides, I do believe you're a Gryffindor, Mister Carter. Which in my experience, Lions do like to be in control of their life events. Including, of course, matters of the heart." With this, she gave a look over to Evelyn. The interpretations in the textbook were generalized. Surely Josh was aware of this by now?

Now for the other things. Rebecca didn't know how to answer the question, so to say, but she knew what her's were so she wrote it down.
Now all Rebecca had to do was wait for Professor Hadley to check over her work...
"Good job," she said as she noted the young Hufflepuff had gone ahead and looked up her first vowel, capstone and cornerstone already.

She could have done something worse! Like..forget how to spell her name.
Pfft, not like that had ever happened before.
Moving the parchment from out of Evelyn's face, Destiny slammed it down on her desk, and picking up her quill, she began crossing out all of her WRONG work. All that writing..FOR NOTHING! And now she was going to have to write even MORE..
FOUR (4): Your desire is to have a plan and meet life in an organized manner. You wish to be practical about everything you do, loving your appointment book, agendas, setting clear boundaries, and knowing the expectations of all concerned. You like to know the plan and be in control - you don't want surprises along the way! You can be a great facilitator, bringing out the best in each individual by building a synergy between people. In matters of the heart and friendship, you are practical in emotional attachments and like to keep things under control. You may not seem romantic or spontaneous, but your planning is designed to thrill and delight others!
TWO (2): Above all else, you want harmony no matter what it takes. You can't tolerate conflict and thus, don't want to lead. You want peace and to be supportive. You are useful as a negotiator or arbitrator because you are sensitive to others and can make them feel good about themselves. You can speak the truth in a manner that causes one to feel supported instead of demoralized. In matters of the heart and friendship, giving is what you do best, sometimes too much so. Your appreciation of others can make you forget about yourself! Criticism can hurt you to the very core. Always happier paired than alone, you are the most devoted companion.
ELEVEN (11/2): Visionary; inspirational; may have genius intelligence; seems more spiritual than others; dresses in an artistic, original, and inventive way; unconstrained; idealistic; has a zest for life; creative and innovative; intense; ability to manage details; super-sensitive; intuitive. You may seem overly dependent on your mate in an unhealthy way. You can also be seen as tense, depressed, or high-strung.

And it still didn't make any sense!
Either did that question Professor Hadley asked.

Oh good! Destiny realized she had a master number! See, she wasn't that bad at this number stuff! "Much better," yup.

SPOILER!!: other numbers
First Vowel: A (1): Highlights individuality, creativity, leadership, and the value of one
Capstone: N: You are intuitive, creative and original. You are unconventional. You are quite opinionated and change your mind only after much discussion. You like to keep track of your life, by writing in a diary for instance. You are sensual and may be involved in many love affairs during your life.
Cornerstone: F: You are responsible, self sacrificing, loving, hospitable and friendly. You have a warm heart and are very compassionate. You feel the pain of others and are considerate. You are helpful but must be careful not to interfere in the lives of others. You also have to guard against a tendency to indulge in melancholy and depression.
Fallon read over them. Yeah...arithmancy was really starting to scare her now. She always seemed to find some grain of truth within it.
Nodding in approval as she passed over the seventh year's work who had already worked out the three number meanings, she moved over to look at more student's work.

Cornerstone: W: You have intuition, determination and a strong sense of purpose. You like to be involved in many activities. You need change and like to meet new people. You have charisma. You provide stimulating company. You have excellent self expression and are very creative. There is, however, a tendency to procrastinate and cut corners.
Capstone: M: You are energetic and hardworking with a touch of the workaholic. You are efficient and do not tire easily. You likely have a strong physical constitution. You are domestic and want financial security. You are tolerant and can endure hardships. You have to be more patient with others.
Oh good. The young lion had figured it out; she knew he would, even if he didn't write out his calculations clearly as he could, he had the right answer. "Very good," she said approvingly of his work.

Moving on now… Gwen decided to start finding out the other 3 things: First Vowel, Cornerstone, Capstone. Now, let’s see how wrong these turn out…

But right now he wanted..what did he want? food? ooh yeah food! hmm wonder what's for dinner?
The first year let his mind wander towards dinner time. He was getting hungry now. His thoughts were interupted when he heard the scraping of feathers on parchment and he looked around. Wait, they were writing? What were they writing?! Daichi tried to look at the parchment from his neighbour... cornerstone first vowel and capstone? They had to calculate them? but how? Daichi dared to look again and saw a textbook lying open on chapter 25. He smirked to himself as he grabbed his own textbook. Maybe he could find out for himself.
SPOILER!!: parchment
First Vowel
A (1): Highlights individuality, creativity, leadership, and the value of one
Capstone
I: You are emotional, considerate and understanding. You are artistic and have good taste. Without balance and steadfastness, there can be nervous tension and accident proneness. You have to try not to switch from one extreme to another; look for balance.
Cornerstone
D: You are down to earth, practical, efficient, orderly and systematic. You are shrewd and determined. You can concentrate and overcome many difficulties. You have natural authority but can also be stubborn and rigid.
Daichi placed his quill down and wondered if he did the right thing.
Was it just her or were there more first years in the third lesson than usual? Perhaps they had decided to take a sneak peek at Arithmancy classes for their future? No matter though; Fina nodded at the Slytherin's work as he seemed to have an understanding for how to find these three numbers.
SPOILER!!: All of you who answered the question

Blah, blah, blah, first vowel, capstone, and cornerstone. There they were. Tracing the description with his finger he raised his hand then said: "The cornerstone reveals our manners and how we approach and deal with obstacles and opportunities. And... It's the first letter of the first name." So this one didn't have to do with vowels? Well, it didn't matter since the first letter in his name was a vowel. He shrugged and waited for the Professor's reply.

Thankfully the captain hadn't caused physical harm to himself or anyone nearby just yet. But it seemed like he was about to maybe fall off the chair and into a sleep. Huh? What was that about dancing monkeys on his parchment? And why did it seem like Jacob was writing a novel on his parchment ; and auto-biography perhaps?
"Captain Blunt," Fina said suddenly. "Perhaps you'd like to share with us what your special letters reveal about you? Perhaps maybe even dressed up in a monkey suit? Do a little dance for us and act it out?"
Ah well...close enough. Savannah thought the names were pretty cool, cornerstone and capstone. No specific calculations? Savannah likes that!
Savannah turned toward the direction of the professor and the Ravenclaw Quidditch Captain. She couldn't help laughing. Dressing up as a monkey in the middle of Arithmancy class would be real interesting. How about wearing a ballerina dress? Teehee...
Savannah wasn't sure if they were suppose to just sit and watch the show or do some other calculations. But she just sat and starred the professor untill she gives further instructions.

Jacob snapped back to the class, with full shock on his face. He gave a forced cough and rubbed his eye like he'd just woken up from a nice deep sleep... which technically he had, he wasn't mentally in class, so obviously he was asleep.
"That's my name." he said quietly, trying to blow off the whole situation. He was a good boy... see. and he put on an innocent smile.
But eagerness soon took over that look of innocence. He started bouncing slightly out of excitement, like a little kid who woke up to find himself in Candyland. "You. Have. A. Monkey. Suit?!" Jacob Wanted It! He had permission not only to where a monkey suit... but to dance, too. Awesome. This is the kind of epicness that he wanted out of boring classes.
Jacob then got up from his desk, still bouncing with the thought of how awesome he'd be looking in a few seconds. "A'right, lets do this!" he then flipped to the page with the meanings of his special letter stuffs, and waited for the suit.

"Good job," she said as she noted the young Hufflepuff had gone ahead and looked up her first vowel, capstone and cornerstone already.
Oh good! Destiny realized she had a master number! See, she wasn't that bad at this number stuff! "Much better," yup.
Nodding in approval as she passed over the seventh year's work who had already worked out the three number meanings, she moved over to look at more student's work.
Oh good. The young lion had figured it out; she knew he would, even if he didn't write out his calculations clearly as he could, he had the right answer. "Very good," she said approvingly of his work.
Oh good; the young Ravenclaw fixed her calculations. Nodding approvingly at her new work and then her first vowel, cornerstone, and capstone, Hadley beamed subtly before moving on.
Fina nodded as some of them seemed to be talking of the same calculation whilst others mentioned one of the three that hadn't been mentioned. No matter though because all three were mentioned at some point, which was good enough. "Precisely that. The first vowel is the first vowel in your first name, Cornerstone is the first letter of your first name, and Capstone in the last letter of your first name. No specific calculations needed."

Simon listened as the professor confirmed his answer as well as his classmates, the seventh year adding to his notes as he waited for the next part. He figured Hadley would either move on for dismiss them but instead she turned her attention to JAcob, causing the Gryffindor to turn and look at his Ravenclaw counterpart. His attention perked up as the arithmacy professor mentioned her plans for the captain as Simon tried not to laugh in response.
The urge to give into to his laughter became harder letting a few quiet chuckles slip as Jacob so willingly gave in to the proposal causing Simon to shake his head. It just cemented in his mind more and more that the younger boy was off his rocker. But whatever...if the Ravenclaw wanted to act out then who was he to stop him and deprieve him and the rest of the class at the amusing scene bound to develop.

Oh for Merlin's sake! What had she instigated here? Nonetheless, he was willing and she was sure at the end of the year, some these kids could do with some fun...
"Well I don't, but I am a witch," Obviously. Or she wouldn't be teaching at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. With a heavy sigh and almost wanting to take back her words/offer, she swallowed all sense of professoring and transfigured an extra quill sitting on her desk into a brown monkey tail. "Here you are. Go bananas." She grinned at her small pun. Entertain us for a bit.

Jacob quickly tied the tail to a loop in his pants, and turned to face the class. "A'right." he said loudly, clapped his hands together. Where did he start?... "Doo De Doo Dee Do Do Dooo" he started a simply hand movement, and tried to verbalize the elevator music that was playing in his head.
He stopped for a quick second remembering where he should actually start. "Y'all should already know me!" he said... again raising his voice. Using his Captains Voice, for when he was shouting at his team different plays. "If You Don't Then There Is Something Flawed In This Educational System!"
He then started again. "Doo De Doo Dee Do Do Dooo" he whistled/sang... something in between those.
"So, First Vowel!" he said taking a break from his sing-whistling. Jacob then Went through his name trying to figure out which was a vowel... J--A--K-- no wait... C--O--B. A! Thats it!
"A!... Wait a minute."
He started sing-whistling again and dancing in a pretty obscure odd way... almost as if he really had to pee. Which he did, but that wasn't the point! Jacob just stared at the text book on whoever's desk it was. "A" meant what?
he then turned back to the audience, and clapped his hands over his head trying to take the form of the letter. "I'm individual, creative and An Awesome Leader." which they already knew. "And I'm Number One! Yeah!" he then gave them a flashy smile and two thumbs up.
"Any Questions So Far?!" he asked loudly, still dancing with his thumbs up and an obnoxiously large smile on his face.

Kurumi merely sat in her seat with her jaw practically hitting the table as she watched in horror as Professor Hadley encouraged the Ravenclaw boy. Kurumi remembered him from the Quidditch pitch - yep - the day he had nearly killed both her and Selina by flying recklessly around while in some sort of competition with Simon. Had nearly put Kurumi off Quidditch all together to be entirely honest. Her eyes flicked towards Professor Hadley again for a moment and tried not to look too appalled with her decision.
She then watched as he began dancing and shouting about the room doing...well...whatever it was he was doing and a frown appeared on her lips.
Keeping her thoughts to herself, Kurumi returned her attention to her parchment and attempted to ignore the chaos around her by focusing on her own interpretations.
SPOILER!!: Kurumi's parchment

Yup. Josephina decided she officially lost it the moment Jacob had got up there and started singing. Merlin, that boy should have been a Gryffindor with how brave he was. Glancing around at the class, she forced a polite smile out. "Thank you, thank you," forgetting about the tail. He'd probably forget he had one too; hopefully Vindictus won't mind if his captain as a monkey's tail for the quidditch match.
Actually, the man probably wouldn't even notice.
"Anyway," she said, turning back to address the class now. "IF you haven't already done so, go ahead and look up your first vowel, cornerstone, and capstone. Once you have done so, if you've got no further questions, you're free to go. However, for homework, I do expect 5.45 inches of parchment on the compare and contrast between what your first vowel reveals about you and your heart's desire number. Due in two weeks."

Simon couldn't hold in his laughter as Jacob acted on the permission he had been given, the monkey tail on the backside of the younger boy. The loud sing-song voice explaining everything was one thing but the mixture of whistling, dancing and ackward movements the Ravenclaw added to it made it all seem riddickulus and more then a little laughable.
"Nope...no questions, just don't quit your day job Blunt," he murmered with a final chuckle. The seventh year turning back around forward in his chair with a shake of his head as he tried to push the image away and focus on finishing up the class. He picked up his quill once more to copy down his info and the book interpretations of the particular letters he had in each place.

Eino flipped through the pages of his book then turned to his parchment. He didn't pay too much attention to the first one. He was a very curious creature, but he never really realized that about himself. The second however, he wasn't very happy with. Well, at least not the "be married more than once." He didn't even want to marry once, but now he was gonna have to do it several time. Yuck. Unless it was to-- No, yuck. He didn't particularly agree with the last one, but he liked most of it so he shrugged and continued to copy the description on his parchment.
When he was done he looked up at the professor and shook his head. No more questions. All that was left to do was write the homework down then, you know, actually do it.

Oh dear sweet Merlin. Really?
Vashti could only shake her head slightly from side to side in disbelief as Jacob danced and sang and whistled and whatever else. It wasn't really surprising, given who - oh, heck, yes it was surprising. Not even after five years could she possibly predict what Jacob was going to do next. It was some sort of talent surely to come up with new ways to act completely and totally crazy. But why Professor Hadley was suddenly encouraging it was beyond her, though she knew Ellie wasn't going to be happy about it.
Anyway, back to Arithmancy.
Since these didn't actually involve any calculations, Vashti instead flipped through the textbook until she found the right chapter. Hmm...

Was she still tying to make this fit him? Josh blinked at the Arithmancy Professor with large gleaming eyes, disbelief reflected in them this time. Could he just ignore this number and continue his life? He liked Arithmancy. It was awesome and fun but everything awesome did not have to be perfect. Nothing was perfect. Everyone, everything and every subject could make mistakes so, yes, Arithmancy had just done a mistake. Not a big deal, right? Not.
Maybe his heart's desire was not even his life purpose or maybe his personality? Did that mean he had to still accept it as a part of himself by seeing it that way? ''Whatever...professor'' he said eyeing the parchment back ''I don't want such a heart.'' But what she had said next made the boy look back at her rather quickly. Yes, he was a Gryffindor and...right he would like to be in control of his life yet it was different when it came to the matters of heart she had mentioned. Following the woman's gaze, Josh stared at Evelyn as well before sighing loud and strong enough to make the parchment in his hand wave a bit. ''My matters of heart is a bit complicated.'' So yes maybe it was too complicated for the number.
Hopefully, one thing to cheer him up had appeared in the class all in a sudden in the form of Jacob Blunt. BWAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHA!!! Laughing loudly at the Ravenclaw Captain, Josh stood up and clapped for him LOUDLY and very exeggeratedly. ''You do make a perfect a dancing monkey Blunt! Keep going that way...no doubt one day you would be awarded...''

Yup...
Since a bit of the good mood back to him, at least he was not going to whine over the previous number anymore. Now he could look up to his first vowel, cornerstone and capstone. Well...those had better not dissappoint him. They did not have to satisfy him yet at least he wished they would fit himself.

Wow. What a brave Ravenclaw Quidditch Captain. That was...an interesting dance...and song.
Savannah turned back to the professor after he stopped dancing and singing. All right. Capstone and Cornerstone. Easy enough. Savannah flipped her textbook to the meanings, and found them immediately.
SPOILER!!: Meanings
First Vowel: A (1): Highlights individuality, creativity, leadership, and the value of one
Cornerstone: S: You are charming and charismatic. You are a warm and devoted person. You are very emotional, the result perhaps of a sad childhood. You are intense and may react in an extreme manner. Don't be too impulsive; take your time before making a decision and carefully sort out your emotions. You are passionate and loving and will experience many emotional ups and downs.
Capstone: H: You are creative and original. You make and lose money easily. However, you will probably do well financially in the long run. You are independent and you rely on your own judgment. You may be a loner. Skepticism and self-doubt are your greatest enemies. You need time in nature to feel your true self and re-establish your direction and clarity.
The girl made a short break and checked if everything was all right, then she decided to go on with the first vowel, cornerstone and capstone. Hmm? What? Oh… I forgot to add the meanings. Well, here I go…
Quote:
Gwendolyn Greene First Vowel: E Highlights curiosity, investigation, fascination with the mystery of life, resourcefulness
Cornerstone: G : You are very mental. You have a strong willpower and determination. Your vision and imagination may make you quite wealthy. You are methodical, disciplined and orderly, but you can also act quickly when opportunities arise. You may well be clairvoyant.
Capstone: N You are intuitive, creative and original. You are unconventional. You are quite opinionated and change your mind only after much discussion. You like to keep track of your life, by writing in a diary for instance. You are sensual and may be involved in many love affairs during your life
Then, Gwen checked read the meanings for the second time. These are quite true… especially the cornerstone.

Iris looked up from her rather sparce parchment when she heard someone singing. Seeing the Ravenclaw Captain, she stared... He really was mental. Really, really, REALLY odd... ANYWAY. Her cornerstone was more important.

Snorting at Professor Hadley's reaction to the outburst, the Head Girl looked back down to her notebook, whilst trying to not think of the monkey boy and his song.
Her workings out and such all seemed to be accurate to her. Good taste? Yes... that was definitely accurate. Intuitive? Yup. Creative?? ... Yeah, you could say that. Arthimancy freaked her out a little sometimes. It was very accurate.
... very emotional, the result perhaps of a sad childhood.
Iris looked down at the Arithmancy book, her face suddenly looking a lot sadder. Her mind drifted back to that summer... The summer Dad left. All the arguments and fights between him and her mum before that day. Years of them... Six years. Six years she'd gone without seeing him.... like he didn't even care any more. Well, that was because he didn't care. And he'd stopped caring long before he left them...
Oh, Merlin. This is exactly why the blonde did her all to never think about her dad. Sniffling and wiping away the tears that'd rolled down her cheeks, Iris hoped that no one had noticed her... Word of Iris getting upset by a bunch of letters and numbers getting around the school wasn't what she needed...
Arithmancy... Ha. It was like Divination, only worse... because it was always right - for Iris, at least. Never did she get any calculations that weren't right for her... But why could it never be wrong about these things? About the things that she hated, that were bad and cruel and sad?

Errr..okay.
That was all Destiny could think about as she watched monkey boy get up in front of the class to sing and dance. Too bad she didn't have peanuts. She would have thrown some at him.
Shaking her head slightly, she turned back to her parchment. What were they supposed to do? Every time she tried to think, she kept getting distracted by the song the boy was singing. Doo De Doo Dee Do Do Dooo.
Great. Now she was humming it.
Draping her arm over her head, she tried her best to cover her ears, and dipping her quill into the ink, she got to work on..whatever it was they were supposed to be doing.

She gave a little snort. She didn't like that meaning much. The only thing she was sure about, was the down to Earth part. She LIVED on Earth. Unlike monkey boy. She had no idea where he was from.

Well..this one..used way too many big words, and Destiny hardly understood what it said.
One out of three isn't bad, right?
Meh.

Penny made a note of the homework and put her stuff back into her bag....Standing up and walking towards the door...Thanks for the lesson Professor Hadley, awesome again!" with a smile she left the room..

Eww. Homework. Arithmancy homework at that. Blahh. Well, at least she was free to go after she calculated her first vowel, cornerstone, and capstone. Realizing that she was so close to leaving this blahhh of a class behind, she hastily picked up her quill, dipped it in ink, and started the calculations.

Eww. Sometimes, Arithmancy could be so...well, wrong. She make a face at the meaning of the letter I and then moved on to her cornerstone.

Sad childhood? Warm, passionate, and loving?! Who wrote this book?! Dear Merlin!

A: You are ambitious, independent and have great drive, you are not easily influenced. You are mental and direct. You want to take charge. You have willpower and are resolute and purposeful. You have courage and boldness but may also be stubborn and willful. Be more flexible and willing to listen to others.
Okay, well...that was a little more like it. She still wasn't sold on listening to others, but...who cared? Class was over and done with! She shoved her belongings into her bag, stood from her seat, and headed out the room.
