As the Fall weather in Britain was still comfortable outside, Professor Hadley had cracked the windows open a bit to allow a lovely September breeze into the classroom before double checking the room setup: Several neat rows, with desks pushed together in pairs.
Once the room was set up in a way she was somewhat satisfied, Fina resumed her customary seat at the front of the room, using her wand to flick the door open. And then another wand flick on the front board:
Please take your seats and take out your textbooks, quill and parchment.
We will begin shortly.
All she needed now was students.
ooc: Lesson will officially begin in a couple hours. Remember that even if I'm not here, Hadley still is, so don't do anything you wouldn't want her to see. Lesson has begun. Any posts from now on stating about arrival WILL be punished accordingly, so please simply pretend as though you've been there all along (for your own benefit and your house)
Wisteria was so confused, which didn't take much for her. She took out her ink and quill and dipped in and started scrambling words down first. Five words to describe you, hmmm

Gosh, a whole sentence.. Kimalia didn't want to cut through this simply, "Where's the fun in that?" Kimalia rolled her eyes, perhaps she did have some Ravenclaw tendencies in wanting to overachieve. Skipping a few more spaces she wrote out her next part.

"There," Kimalia sighed. "That wasn't so bad." She set her quill back down for further grading and instructions.
Fee looked around to see how the others were doing and nodded to herself. This didnt sound to bad at all,she should be able to do it easily.

Simon hadn't actually turned up for a Arithmancy lesson since his first year and he had no idea why he had decided to turn up today maybe it was the fact that he had been in trouble with Professor Hadley at the start of the term and had wanted to come and make it up to her by trying his hardest in this lesson.

But it seemed right. It occured to Ariadne that she was actually enjoying this. So she decided to write the following sentence: I AM STARTING TO LIKE ARITHMANCY.
Olivia stared down at her paper. She had written her last name on her paper, but that was all; she just didn't understand where on earth other people were getting these numbers from. The professor hadn't put a chart on the board and Olivia had no idea what they were all talking about when they mentioned Pathagorean. It just made her think of geometry.
She bit her lip and was surprised to feel frustrated enough to almost cry. She'd never felt this clueless before. Finally, she decided she needed to ask whether she was mocked or not. It was a moment of humiliation for asking a possibly stupid question versus a whole year of frustration for not. She rose her hand shyly. "Um... professor? I need help. I'm so confused."
She watched the professor come over and her heart thudded, certain she was being foolish had had simply miss some instruction. She was certainly prepared to be reprimanded.
Nessie put up her hand waited her turn then said "Erm.. Proffessor I think this is right" Nessie read out read the sentence she had written from her book atloud so the proffesor and class could hear. She hopped what she was doing was right. It seemed like it was but she wasn't too sure.

He eyed his parchment before groaning to himself. As long as Professor Hadley didn't see what he just wrote he would be juuuust fine. He was kind of grinning triumphantly though that the sentence he'd picked (which wasn't a very happy one) had actually turned out to be easy. But why, oh whyyyy did he had to spell out Quidditch? *head!desk* Now he had a big fat question mark instead of an answer. Alex looked around the room once, making sure no one had seen his error and then he tried to hide the piece of parchment under his arms. He shouldn't have attended, it was useless for him to get any better at Arithmancy...
Pwease Professor Hadley don't throw equations at his head.

Well...
Five words synonymous with who he was? So, he was supposed to find out five words that described him. Sounded easy yet it was hard. Hard because he had never seriously sat down and thought over what kind of a person he was. Yes maybe one might have seen him boasting about his potentials however that was only joking around but this was serious stuff. So how he was supposed to find out which five words represented him?
Think hard Mr. Carter!
Yet first he needed parchment and a quill. So, he stole took some of Evelyn's parchment and snatched her quill once she was done with her calculations. That was done. Now to the words...
One could be Gryffindor. He knew some people did not think he was worthy of his house just because of points losses yet he still liked his house and tried to be a good lion despite everything. Next, it was his job to protect those people he valued and even others so he could add protective. Lafay called him Romeo but, no, he was not going to add that. Should he? Perhaps. Aha! Another thing, he had always tried to be just towards everyone. Aaaaand....he was devoted...to Evelyn, right? Right. Totally. So it was over. Finally.

Phew! Noooow he had surely remembered why he hated Maths so much when he had been at the Muggle school. Anyway, at least now he was done! So, throwing the quill on the desk, he let out a huge breath of relief and leaned towards Evelyn to rest his head on her shoulder. That head had his brain inside and his brain was kinda hurting now!

"Not particularly. The number system that we'll be using for pretty much most of your Arithmancy careers, unless otherwise stated or you delve further into Numerological studies would be the Pythagorean Number System. This is found in Chapter Two of your textbooks," Hadley informed them, waiting for those who wished to do so to turn to that appropriate page. "Using the chart listed, you'll assign each letter in the word the number. Add up all the numbers in the word together, but in most cases where we reduce to a single digit, with Paragrams, you're NOT going to reduce."
Hmm, perhaps they ought to practice with simple words for a bit. "Okay, so take a few moments to practice this by taking five words synonymous with who you are and translating them to a number equivalent, as I did with my last name, Hadley."
'Five words synonymous to who I am?' Zara thought. Looking around at the other students, there were a lot of numbers. Surely, that couldn't be five words. They must've been making sentences! Zara wondered Professor Hadley had asked them to write sentences too. 'Oh well,' she thought as she began to write down.

Number Mysticism ~ began in Ancient Greece hundred of years ago; 6th century BC Pythagoras ~ he began the number mysticism
***Numbers have power; but do not control events
***Coincidences happen Mere Coincidence ~ two different events happening that seem to have a connection to each other
***Good example by Head Boy Finlay: “I might have life path number of 1 = life takes me down at road of independence. My life could go that way, but it could be a coincidence and not just because of my life path number.” <<Whew, it was hard to write that one, had to write fast. Paragram ~play on words (wordplay); imply words to be graceful and is commonly used in literature like in poetry where all lines have same sum
***According to a student: adding numbers would equate to Numerology and Arithmancy
***Studying about coincidences associated with minor art form w/c is not used anymore Gematria ~ what Ancient Greeks call Arithmancy; where the practice of assigning numbers to letters and words to understand mystical significance

Nika looked down at her parchment and let out a rather loud yawn. Why must Arithmancy be so much work? It's not like she hated the subject it's just that maths isn't really her thing. Professor Hadley is very nice and all, but Nika isn't fond of Arithmancy. She dipped her quill in some ink and began drawing some doodles around the border of her parchment.
More work?!?! Great.
Nevertheless she began writing her sentences. After the first one she started to get a bit carried a way and went ahead and did two more. Arithmancy isn't that bad.

Ok... so she had to include her name. So 'Lewis' would have to do. Hm... Where she came from... she didn't know that. Grr! So the only thing that linked in with her past and family would have to be the word 'Adopted'. What else, what else? Oh! Quidditch! How can she forget that? And... her house! Because she was sorted in there for a reason right? She clearly has the attributes or some of them for Hufflepuff house. Now that just left one... Hmpf, so much for the classwork getting his mind off of things. But he did want house points so, oh well.
Smiling at the Hufflepuff first year, Fina shook her head.
Peyton beamed when it was time to get working. She smoothed her already smooth parchment and dipped her quill into some ink and began writing...

Once the girl finished with the first set of numbers she awaited for instructions. She was totally psyched with how much she enjoyed adding numbers...lots of them. When she heard Professor Hadley saying that they could go on and do the same but with a sentence, Peyton smiled and began writing...

Sierra released a slightly audible gasp when Hollingberry's work was displayed for all to see. Was nowhere safe from the Dictionary Eater?! She glanced quickly away, thinking that if she just stopped looking up there she'd forget about Kurumi's assignment. It was hard to forget, though. It ate away at her as she hastily translated a whole sentence (Blahhhh!) into number values.
Was class nearly over!?

Loyal might fit as well, he added remembering something that had been said of him at one point in time. Thinking it over a bit longer, Simon eventually had three more words that would fit including one he was sure Josh would agree on for him.
Back to pacing around the room and checking numbers, it was Josephina's turn for her head to hurt. Though she did ENJOY this stuff, sometimes even when you enjoy something, it didn't matter and it could still hurt your head. Huh? Oh, right, checking calculations. She hadn't even noticed she'd been staring over the Gryffindor Captain's parchment for like five minutes without saying anything.
"Good, good, except... no wait... You've miscalculated captain and bookworm, I think...." She said staring again at the seventh year's parchment, before moving onward.

He smiled and admired his handiwork. This arithmancy stuff really wasn't that bad. Not at all!
As he looked at his work, a question popped into his head and he raised his hand. "Exclamation points don't have number values, right? Just the letters?" he asked. He was PRETTY sure they didn't, but he just wanted to make sure he got this right.
Hearing a question from a rather tall boy, the one with striking familiarity to Sierra, she nodded. "That would be correct, punctuation marks don't carry any number values..." Huh? Wait, a second, Sierra described herself as a twin, did she? "Greingoth..." Yea, she was slow. Or she just lacked coffee in her caffeine system. "You. You're related, aren't you?" "Can we try calculating a sentence now if we like? I have one I think would probably work, its Shakespeare - and from Macbeth, anyways its line To-morrow, and to-morrow, and to-morrow," she explained biting her lip. Well, she was going to try and do it anyway.
Sentence by words = 38 + 38 + 38 + 10 + 10 = should be around 134
Right, moving on. "Yes, dear, that's good." Very good, indeed. But by seventh year, hopeful their mistakes in calculations would be less frequent.

Tossing a small comforting smile at the young Slytherin who seemed embarrassed, she hoped she wouldn't be. Mistakes did happen, after all.

Professor Zookara had blown that up as well for people to look at as a reference, and she had wanted to crawl under the table and hide.
The desire hadn’t changed.
Locking her gaze on her parchment, but pretty sure she felt eyes trying to burn their way through the back of her head, Kurmi picked up her quill again and started working on the next set of calculations. It wasn’t exactly a sentence that popped into her mind, but Professor Hadley had said anything they wanted, and she hoped that that included proverbs.
SPOILER!!: Kurumi’s NEW calculations
STUMBLING SEVEN TIMES BUT RECOVERING EIGHT
(1+2+3+4+2+3+9+5+7)+(1+5+4+5+5)+(2+9+4+5+1)+(2+3+2 )+(9+5+3+6+4+5+9+9+5+7)+(5+9+7+8+2)
=
(36)+(20)+(21)+(7)+(62)+(31) = 177
Oh! Two 7’s! That was a good sign, right? Seven was one of the most powerful magical numbers, so having them two of them in her final result meant something, yes?
Was it just her or did Kurumi seem ODDLY SHY about her work being shared in front of the whole class?! OH wait, perhaps she should have asked the thirteen year old, but she didn't think it would be an issue. Who didn't like to have their work showcased afterall? Other than herself when she was that age.
"Nice job again, dear," Fina said, quickly moving on. No need to add more pressure to the girl by lingering over work.

Professor Hadley is the best instructor to ever grace Hogwarts Castle.
Now would be an ideal time for Ellie to lay her head on her desk. And she did so, consequently covering (and probably smudging) her work. But she didn't care. That was too much brain exertion. She should've picked a shorter sentence. Regardless of her original intentions. It wasn't worth it.
Ellie's brain signing out.
Now's the time when Professor Hadley was both flattered and simultaneously wanted to go hide under her professor desk. "I... Miss Stone... I... those calculations are..." She had nothing to add. "Perfect. Yes. I wouldn't change a thing." Smile sliding onto her face, she slid over toward the next student's work.

Ravenclaw, which was synonymous with intelligence, creativity, and curiosity all in one. Now, three more words. THREE MORE WORDS. He began drumming the desk with his fingers impatiently until it came to him: spaz! That was another obvious one that he should have grasped quickly. She was quite the smart cookie; he almost wondered why she hadn't been placed into Ravenclaw. But alas, there was no time for thinking of the new teacher's pet at the moment. Now, they were onto sentences! Dipping his quill into his ink pot anew, he began to write once more. What would be the perfect sentence for him to use? Then, it hit him: I am an eccentric. Easy enough, right?

It didn't take long until Professor Hadley had given them the green light to continue on to sentences rather than individual words. Wait, was that a green light? Or more of a general 'we'll be doing this after I lecture you more about it' type thing.
Yet, that lecture hadn't been said. In fact, she was already helping people who started. Hmm. Glancing down to her own notebook, she huffed a sigh as she started to tap her quill quietly on the desk again.
If she thought words were hard to think of...than trying to think of a sentence was way worse. But, she thought of the most true sentence there could be in the world. It was so true, it had to be written down in CAPITAL letters.
Was Evelyn no longer going by her best friend's surname? Had the inseparable pair had a falling out over the summer? Noticing the looks Destiny kept giving toward Evelyn, Fina was sure it was something similar.
And then the phrase. Oh there was definitely something going on between the two and it was probably over something petty like chocolate too.
But now wasn't the time for personal vendettas. "Nice work, Evelyn." Yup, yup. The Slytherin was accurate with her numbers.

Value of whole sentence is ironically completion and compassion.
"Is this correct, ma'am?"
Hearing a young female's voice and a question, Hadley peeked over at the parchment in question and studied it for a moment. "Um... yes... and no... I've asked you to specifically not reduce, because with paragrams, reducing to a single digit is not important, nor is it necessary. With writing a paragram, you'll see that it comes to what the numerical values of each sentence is that matters most." Hadley started. "So with your sentence, you'll want to go back and add the values for each word without any single-digit reduction." Please, it was the only time they didn't have to reduce. They should take advantage of it.

Except, he'd been through all the trouble of moving over to that seat, only for Hadley to place the exercise on the board.
Ha. Thanks, Hadley.
And...a phrase, well, he could come up with one...probably.
And a smirk was on his face. He knew the phrase well, and it served him as a reminder, too, never mind the fact that he wasn't famous yet.

Arya took a moment to find words that just spoke of her before scribbling them down and set to working on each one.
Hm. Interesting... her name and cheerful equaled out, funny that. Heh. ....That is unless he got all this calculation wrong. That would be very annoying.
Stopping at the next student's parchment, Josephina was pleased to see he got the addition part correct... but... Something was strange about these equations to Oakey, he looked at his scar shaped like the roman numeral 4, then he looked back at his notes, then back to his hand, and back to his notes again, something was up. 4 out of the 6 answers he wrote ended in the number 4 that was indeed strange. Oh well Oakey thought to himself at least they didn't all end in the number 4. Oakey took one more look at his notes...AH! 4 out of 6! Only 4 out of 6 of his answers! THIS WAS REALLY STRANGE!
Just as Hadlley asked earlier about what was a coincidence. This most surely passed off as one. What were the chances that 4 would show up so often in his equations. Oakey continued on with the assignment and wrote his sentence.
SPOILER!!: truly this must be fate
Sentence~ YOU FEELIN' LUCKY PUNK?
7+6+3+6+5+5+3+9+5+3+3+3+2+7+7+3+5+2= 84
GAH! again the numbers added up with the second digit being 4!
When Oakey went to see the Professor earlier about his scar, he was pleased to hear how awesome the number 4 was. Oakey actually took pride in having the scar.
BUT THIS WAS JUST WEIRDING HIM OUT! Oakey raised his hand in hopes Hadley would come to his aide. Ummmm, Look at all the 4's this added up to Oakey pointed to his first part of the assignment. What's even stranger about it is that only 4 of the 6 added up to those totals. He then pointed to his Sentence It happened again here. Please tell me I made a mistake.
He looked back to HARVEY and BLUDGERS and noticed how they both equaled 34. Oakey remembers it well. Harvey being viciously beaten by those jinxed bludgers, this just made him worry even more. Coincidence Oakey thought to himself.
Noticing the look on the adorable first year puffs face, Fina walked over and studied his parchment, shaking her head. "It looks correct to me, but one thing though, with your sentence... if when writing an actual paragram, you'll want the numbers to equate better, you might need to add the 'g' on feelin'" She suggested. Maybe, maybe not. Depends.

"I guess that wasn't too hard...not sure...am I right...?"
Tayla glanced towards Josh's direction. She also stared at his Slytherin girlfriend and sighed. She turned back to her parchment and laughed softly at herself, crossing out her calculations at the bottom. "Might as well ask Professor Hadley if I'm right...and for some help maybe.
She raised her hand and called, "Excuse me, Professor Hadley?"
Looking toward the girl who called her name, Josephina glanced over the girl's work. "Almost... except for curious, you've miscalculated, as well as missed a digit for the phrase 'i need to study'" Perhaps prevelant to the fact that the girl needed to?

Looking over yet another Gryffindor first year's work, Josephina was impressed with how almost accurate they seemed to be. "Close, but you've missed the first 'L' in Baseball Player, so your calculation is off by that one digit." Hadley nodded, before turning to the previous said-counterpart-to-Evelyn.

Probably. Either that or her enemy Evelyn would rat her out. Pfft.
Frowning slightly, she thought about another escape route. But before she could come up with something better than the window, the Professor started speaking AGAIN and even assigned them some work. GAH! Now she HAD to stay and worst of all, she HAD to do the work.
At least this part was easy. Especially since she was allowed to use her book. She was allowed, right? Oh well. She was using it anyway.

Check, check, check.
After making sure her calculations were all correct, Destiny went back to thinking about an escape route. She had finished one part of the lesson, wasn't that enough!?
Her BRAIN! It was going to EXPLODE!
Was Patroclus in the lesson? She couldn't remember seeing him, but she wasn't about to get all creeperish and glance around the room. Although..if she did, she could probably find a way to get up to the ceilings. BUT! Before she had a chance to turn her head, Hadley started speaking AGAIN! What was up with her?
Her throat was going to get dry.
Perhaps she could offer to get the woman a glass of water from the kitchens..and just never return. Would she even notice if a house elf came and took her place?
Probably. Either that or her enemy Evelyn would rat her out. Pfft.
Slouching in her seat some as she listened to the next set of instructions, Destiny thought about a sentence to calculate. Hmm..
Got it!

"Nice job," Hadley complimented of the sixth year.

Heather beamed at her work. She finally finished, that was really a lot of numbers to work on, really. Perhaps, Arithmancy wasn't that bad after all. It did look quite easy.
Long sentence coming up next, in which Josephina totally needed a double-take on her own mental calculations. "Very nice," she complimented, clearly impressed. These kids were actually pretty decent with their basic math skills.

Daichi scribbled down his answers at the front of the classroom while sometimes biting his quill. The theory had him pretty confused but when they started to do the calculations it was actually pretty easy...he hoped.
When done, the first year checked his paper again and wondered if he did the right thing. Frowning first, Daichi then shrugged his shoulders and continued the second part.

Staring at the next Slytherin's work, Josephina shook her head slowly. "Almost, but you've miscalculated 'Daichi' and didn't add up the final value for 'Duck'." She paused contemplatively. "Oh and make sure you add up the final total for that sentences as well," Fina said, smiling at the boy. Not a bad sentence.

It's like I'm a first year, again, he thought glumly, remembering what it was like to not know anyone. And, suddenly, there it was. His sentence!
Tongue poking out of the corner of his mouth just the tiniest bit in concentration, Tiberius did the addition and checked it over again.
Now, to find out if that bit about coincidences in the beginning was to get them to keep from assigning meaning to things, or if these paragrams did have some sort of meaning.
Checking over the next boy's work, Josephina couldn't help but notice there were quite a few of the male gender in Arithmancy this term; not that it mattered terribly much but just an observation. "Nice work," Hadley said of the older Claw, as she moved on to the next.

The next student, however, didn't seem to understand this AT ALL. "Um dear... Looking over toward a Hufflepuff that Hadley was fairly certain she'd seen him once or twice before, she looked over as he AVERAGED out his words. Blink, blink. "Um... You're supposed to add up the numbers in each word, not average all the word values together. For instance, the word ship would sum 25 if you add up each of those four digits," Hadley nodded, hoping he maybe semi-understood now.

"In your textbooks, if you flip to chapter two, you'll see a chart in which are the numbers associated with each letter of the alphabet." Hadley explained. "So you take a word, we'll say, 'book' and figure out which numbers are associated with those letters."
She wrote it out on the girl's parchment:
B-O-O-K
2-6-6-2
2+6+6+2 =16
"As you can see, by summing each of the values of the letters, we can an answer of 16, which is the numerical value associated with the word book." She nodded, encouraging the girl to move on and write her own words.

Master of everything, eh, Carter? Raising an eyebrow at him curiously, she shook her head. "Doubtful on the statement, but that's besides the point....I think, you should double-check that calculation of your house value." Yup, yup. Do it.

"You're doing good!" Hadley said, smiling at the girl who had taken some rather extensive notes. "Don't give up now!" She encouraged.

Hmm... "Close, but I think you should double-check your calculations for your last two statements. Including the letter to number conversions," Fina said, commenting about the second year's work. She was sure that Nika would figure out her mistakes.

After her work was done, she sighed and waited for the professor. 'Was the professor supposed to check them?'
"See! I told you that you could do it!" Hadley said, smiling at the young Gryffindor with the look of a proud parent.

Heehee.
Frowning at the next girl, who insisted on reducing, she shook her head. "I said NO reducing to a single digit... And um... I think you've miscalculated anyhow." Yup, yup. Go, double-check. Do it.

Ending her current rounds back where she started with the Gryffindor Captain, Fina smiled as he seemed to have figured out the sentence thing, even if he miscalculated before. "Nice job," she commented lightly, before returning to address the rest of the class.
"Most of you are figuring this out. If you've done a statement already and don't want to attempt another, just sit tight for a few more moments... We'll be continuing shortly." Hadley said, quickly before returning to her rounds.
OOC: Yea, this reply took longer than expected and my shift is rounding to a close. I'll finishing replying to the rest of you IN A LITTLE WHILE and then continue on with the lesson. SOORRRYY ABOUT THAT!!! <333
