| | Arithmancy Lesson One: Paragrams {Pythagorean-style} As the Fall weather in Britain was still comfortable outside, Professor Hadley had cracked the windows open a bit to allow a lovely September breeze into the classroom before double checking the room setup: Several neat rows, with desks pushed together in pairs.
Once the room was set up in a way she was somewhat satisfied, Fina resumed her customary seat at the front of the room, using her wand to flick the door open. And then another wand flick on the front board: Please take your seats and take out your textbooks, quill and parchment.
We will begin shortly.
All she needed now was students. ooc: Lesson will officially begin in a couple hours. Remember that even if I'm not here, Hadley still is, so don't do anything you wouldn't want her to see. Lesson has begun. Any posts from now on stating about arrival WILL be punished accordingly, so please simply pretend as though you've been there all along (for your own benefit and your house) Introduction Intro to Paragram topic Practice makes perfect: Pixie's AWESOME example of what you're supposed to do ;D Let's try phrases, shall we? And the students were already setting their minds to figuring out the sentence thing!! Awesome! "Yes, that is perfect. A bit short, but as you're learning, sometimes it's better to go short and sweet just to get the basics down." Hadley nodded at the girl. And if it was true, then the statement wasn't surprising in the least of a Ravenclaw. Quote:

Done with this one as well. Oh wait. " Professor?" She suddenly asked, raising her hand. " Any sentence we want?" She wrote one already, but she could do some more. "Any sentence you want," Josephina said, smiling down upon the young Slytherin and doing some quick mental calculations. "But just try to make sure their accurate. | curly haired prefect - "sometimes I get angry!" - 30/90 - *chicken emoji* - probably @ Disney - I speak dog ANY sentence? That seemed very vague. Alex tapped his chin a few times with his quill before he decided that he'd go with something super easy, since this was his first arithmancy class and all. He'd already done calculations for five words, so why not USE those? Quote:

He smiled and admired his handiwork. This arithmancy stuff really wasn't that bad. Not at all!
As he looked at his work, a question popped into his head and he raised his hand. "Exclamation points don't have number values, right? Just the letters?" he asked. He was PRETTY sure they didn't, but he just wanted to make sure he got this right.

| HOLISTIC ACTRESS {X O} EVERYTHING IS CONNECTED Alright calculations in a sentence - hmm, that sounded interesting. And again no reducing.
She chewed her lip slightly.
She new what she wanted to do, because one it was simple and two it was Shakespeare.
"Can we try calculating a sentence now if we like? I have one I think would probably work, its Shakespeare - and from Macbeth, anyways its line To-morrow, and to-morrow, and to-morrow," she explained biting her lip. Well, she was going to try and do it anyway.

But... waaaait. What? " Oops," Helena whispered, quickly looking back at her calculations. Uhhh this was embarrassing! She must have accidentally added a one or something. And of course, her face turned completely red. " I should do that." Calculate each word separately, as professor Hadley told her to.

"Well done, Miss Hollingberry," she smiled as she cast a quick Geminio Charm on the girl's parchment, and transferred her work to the board as a prime example. "For those struggling with what I'm expecting for this part of the lesson, I've copied Miss Hollingberry's work up on the board for you to use an example." A smile flickered over toward the young Gryffindor as Fina then resumed to wandering around the room. WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT?!
Not that Kurumi wasn’t flattered that Professor Hadley was using her work as an example for her classmates to follow if they were struggling, it was more of being singled out that startled her. She remembered her first year during Muggle Studies when she had drawn a rough sketch of a baseball field and labeled the various stick figures in their given positions. Professor Zookara had blown that up as well for people to look at as a reference, and she had wanted to crawl under the table and hide.
The desire hadn’t changed. Quote:

She reiterated the last bit sternly, once more, because she knew she always emphasized the reduction in any previous calculation they've done for Arithmancy. This was different. Locking her gaze on her parchment, but pretty sure she felt eyes trying to burn their way through the back of her head, Kurmi picked up her quill again and started working on the next set of calculations. It wasn’t exactly a sentence that popped into her mind, but Professor Hadley had said anything they wanted, and she hoped that that included proverbs.
Oh! Two 7’s! That was a good sign, right? Seven was one of the most powerful magical numbers, so having them two of them in her final result meant something, yes?

Ariana smiled happily to hear that she was right. It was true her sentence was short, but it was also true that she didn't want to do a bunch of work and then find out she didn't get the the idea at all. Now that she knew what to do, she could try more complicated sentences. Hmm.... She liked the seventh year's idea of Shakespeare, being muggleborn she had to memorize twenty five lines in sixth grade of muggle school, so she might as well put that to use!
Dipping her quill into her ink, Ariana got to work calculating a bit of Shakespeare!

Hmm, perhaps they ought to practice with simple words for a bit. "Okay, so take a few moments to practice this by taking five words synonymous with who you are and translating them to a number equivalent, as I did with my last name, Hadley." So lesson learned: Ancient Greeks were mean. Why have two words for the same thing? Honestly.
Ugh. Calculations.
She really shouldn't, but every Arithmancy lesson, Ellie hoped she could avoid the math. It was silly of her to be so optimistic. She should've learned so by now.
Anyway five words synonymous to who she was? Uhhhmmmm.
And all those were complete facts about her. Factual = synonymous, right? Right.
So now a sentence?
Smirk.
Now would be an ideal time for Ellie to lay her head on her desk. And she did so, consequently covering (and probably smudging) her work. But she didn't care. That was too much brain exertion. She should've picked a shorter sentence. Regardless of her original intentions. It wasn't worth it.
Ellie's brain signing out.

Theodore flipped his book open to Chapter Two, studying the numbers and letters until he believed he had gotten the hang of it all. It didn't look too hard. It was simple mathematics, for the most part. Now... for the word choice... what words to use in coordination with himself? Well, there was curly. That was obvious. Then there was... Ravenclaw, which was synonymous with intelligence, creativity, and curiosity all in one. Now, three more words. THREE MORE WORDS. He began drumming the desk with his fingers impatiently until it came to him: spaz! That was another obvious one that he should have grasped quickly. He thought up the last two on the spot ( cat for his new pet, Bree, and lion for his friend, Brae) and began to get to work.
As Kurumi Hollingberry's work was displayed to the class, Theodore peered over the shoulders of a few students to take a look at her. She was quite the smart cookie; he almost wondered why she hadn't been placed into Ravenclaw. But alas, there was no time for thinking of the new teacher's pet at the moment. Now, they were onto sentences! Dipping his quill into his ink pot anew, he began to write once more. What would be the perfect sentence for him to use? Then, it hit him: I am an eccentric. Easy enough, right? |

Narrowing her eyes slightly, the Slytherin stared at the Gryffindor k's work that was now on the board. What was Kurokawa?
Having finished the first part, Evelyn made herself comfortable in her seat (or at least as comfortable as one can get in these seats) and looked around the room. It didn't take long until Professor Hadley had given them the green light to continue on to sentences rather than individual words. Wait, was that a green light? Or more of a general 'we'll be doing this after I lecture you more about it' type thing.
Yet, that lecture hadn't been said. In fact, she was already helping people who started. Hmm. Glancing down to her own notebook, she huffed a sigh as she started to tap her quill quietly on the desk again.
If she thought words were hard to think of...than trying to think of a sentence was way worse. But, she thought of the most true sentence there could be in the world. It was so true, it had to be written down in CAPITAL letters. |

Ariana then decided to try a couple more lines- couldn’t hurt to practice! She saw that only a couple people were actually doing the sentence practice right now, most were still on or just finishing their words. This in fact made her feel very smart, and determined to be even better! So now the next three lines of Juliet’s famous speech would be… number-itized.
Whew! That was a lot of math! Ariana decided she was done practicing, and wouldn’t do anything but what she was told for the rest of the class. The only weird thing she noticed was a recurring of the number 19, again and again. But in the end she decided not to bring it up or anything, probably just happened to everyone!

Selina listened to her Professor speak to the class and smiled when Kurumi was the first to finish. She always was the most apt in all of her classes. Turning to her friend she mouthed good work and then returned to her own five traits. Her parchment was neat and well-organized, but her math skills were lacking. She knew it was only a matter of time until the clean parchment became chicken scratch.
"Is this correct, ma'am?"

Being her usual 'weird' self, Kyle decided to do another sentence, one using her original words - because this would challenge the lesson and she'd get better and she wanted to be better. She also wanted to make Ravenclaw's points go UP UP UP this term like SKY high upness. Y'know? Good stuff!

So, yes, his suddenly widened eyes could be seen very clearly, but he composed himself and kind of smirked. He'd chose very good by moving over to sit behind Kurumi, because she'd done a fantastic work. Except, he'd been through all the trouble of moving over to that seat, only for Hadley to place the exercise on the board.
Ha. Thanks, Hadley.
And...a phrase, well, he could come up with one...probably.
And a smirk was on his face. He knew the phrase well, and it served him as a reminder, too, never mind the fact that he wasn't famous yet.

So maybe sitting beside the open window wasn't the wisest of ideas, cause before the class had a chance to get boring or difficult, she was already looking out of it. At the ship mostly as she let her mind wander aimlessly. It wasn't until she heard students giving responses and shuffling papers that she pulled herself out of her reverie and turned her attention to the board.
Oh. They were doing things. She flipped through her journal and pulled out her quill, catching the tail end of the questions answered while scanning the she figured out a bit of what they were doing. Didn't look too hard. Maybe.
Arya took a moment to find words that just spoke of her before scribbling them down and set to working on each one.
Hm. Interesting... her name and cheerful equaled out, funny that. Heh. Arya grinned at her work, not entirely sure if it was done correctly, but not too fussed since she'd at least attempted it without suffering a headache. Leaning back in her seat, she glanced around the classroom to see if.... she wouldn't be much help, but she could still look around the classroom.

| Raspberry Jam | #ChocolateFrogFamous | Ultimate Fangirl Jamie rubbed his forehead, as the lesson was already giving him a headache. It didn't help that the professor was speaking complete mumbo jumbo, with words that he had hardly heard of. Once he heard the intruction to look in their textbooks, Jamie opened to chapter two and studied it briefly. Hmm, it made it a bit clearer.
Five words to describe himself? Hmm, how to describe someone so amazing in five words? Okay, that was easy enough. Jamie nodded at the work he had just written down then looked at his textbook closely to write a whole sentence. Jeeeeze, this would take ages. That sounded just about right. However he had absolutely no idea what the numbers by the words actually meant. Ah well. Grinning, the third year looked to the front waiting for what to do next. Turns out, he wasn't as bad at Arithmancy as he thought!
....That is unless he got all this calculation wrong. That would be very annoying.

Something told Connor to recheck his math on his sentance, he was sure he had left something out or miscalculated somewhere. So he crossed out his mistake and redid the calculations again.

| Mom says I have no sense of direction, so I packed my bags and right.
OOooh now the class was starting to make sense. Oakey had awoken fully just so he could pay even closer attention to what would happen next in the class. he grabbed his quill and parchment and started to write down his words and numbers
Something was strange about these equations to Oakey, he looked at his scar shaped like the roman numeral 4, then he looked back at his notes, then back to his hand, and back to his notes again, something was up. 4 out of the 6 answers he wrote ended in the number 4 that was indeed strange. Oh well Oakey thought to himself at least they didn't all end in the number 4. Oakey took one more look at his notes...AH! 4 out of 6! Only 4 out of 6 of his answers! THIS WAS REALLY STRANGE!
Just as Hadlley asked earlier about what was a coincidence. This most surely passed off as one. What were the chances that 4 would show up so often in his equations. Oakey continued on with the assignment and wrote his sentence.
GAH! again the numbers added up with the second digit being 4!
When Oakey went to see the Professor earlier about his scar, he was pleased to hear how awesome the number 4 was. Oakey actually took pride in having the scar.
BUT THIS WAS JUST WEIRDING HIM OUT! Oakey raised his hand in hopes Hadley would come to his aide. Ummmm, Look at all the 4's this added up to Oakey pointed to his first part of the assignment. What's even stranger about it is that only 4 of the 6 added up to those totals. He then pointed to his Sentence It happened again here. Please tell me I made a mistake.
He looked back to HARVEY and BLUDGERS and noticed how they both equaled 34. Oakey remembers it well. Harvey being viciously beaten by those jinxed bludgers, this just made him worry even more. Coincidence Oakey thought to himself.

Tayla worked silently as Professor Hadley instructed the class. She really liked the teacher, but she wasn't as confident with Arithmancy as she was with most of her other classes. Though Tayla received good marks, even in Muggle school she struggled with numbers.
She furrowed her eyebrows and practiced, hoping Professor Hadley wouldn't notice how confused she was at the moment. She just needed to keep her head down... "Reduce? What does she mean by 'do not reduce'? Perhaps the sum? Ugh..." she thought. Tayla's head throbbed while she tried to concentrate. "Paragrams...Pythegorean...are they different or the same?"
Tayla sighed as she heard Professor Hadley saying they were all doing great. "I wish I were, too..." But she didn't want to show her work unless she felt more confident it was right. "Okay," she whispered bracingly to herself. She sat up straight and tried to focus. "I guess that wasn't too hard...not sure...am I right...?"
Tayla glanced towards Josh's direction. She also stared at his Slytherin girlfriend and sighed. She turned back to her parchment and laughed softly at herself, crossing out her calculations at the bottom. "Might as well ask Professor Hadley if I'm right...and for some help maybe.
She raised her hand and called, "Excuse me, Professor Hadley?"

Too many numbers, too many big words and learning that a paragram is nothing like a paragraph was too much for her to take. They were only on the second floor of the castle, would Professor Hadley really notice if she took a quick dive to freedom out one of the opened windows?
Probably. Either that or her enemy Evelyn would rat her out. Pfft.
Frowning slightly, she thought about another escape route. But before she could come up with something better than the window, the Professor started speaking AGAIN and even assigned them some work. GAH! Now she HAD to stay and worst of all, she HAD to do the work.
At least this part was easy. Especially since she was allowed to use her book. She was allowed, right? Oh well. She was using it anyway. Quote:

And to do this, you must add together the values from each word to get a final value for that sentence. Again, remember, do not reduce." She reiterated the last bit sternly, once more, because she knew she always emphasized the reduction in any previous calculation they've done for Arithmancy. This was different. Check, check, check.
After making sure her calculations were all correct, Destiny went back to thinking about an escape route. She had finished one part of the lesson, wasn't that enough!?
Her BRAIN! It was going to EXPLODE!
Was Patroclus in the lesson? She couldn't remember seeing him, but she wasn't about to get all creeperish and glance around the room. Although..if she did, she could probably find a way to get up to the ceilings. BUT! Before she had a chance to turn her head, Hadley started speaking AGAIN! What was up with her?
Her throat was going to get dry.
Perhaps she could offer to get the woman a glass of water from the kitchens..and just never return. Would she even notice if a house elf came and took her place?
Probably. Either that or her enemy Evelyn would rat her out. Pfft.
Slouching in her seat some as she listened to the next set of instructions, Destiny thought about a sentence to calculate. Hmm..
Got it!

Hogwarts RPG Name: Heather Rosemary Olsen Seventh Year | Panda Princess || Show the panda love | | lazy artist at work || strawberry milkshake <3 Apparently, Heather thought her head was going to explode with more math to do. She hadn't been too sure with what she was doing at all. she was almost about done with the first work, but then Professor Hadley had assigned a new one. She sighed. This was one class she knew she would struggle in, just like the other classes.
Then Kurumi's calculations were posted i the board. She checked her calculations. Hm, perhaps she got it right?
Seeing that maybe she really did a good job, she moved on to calculate the next work as quick as she could. A sentence hm? Maybe this should be a good one.
Heather beamed at her work. She finally finished, that was really a lot of numbers to work on, really. Perhaps, Arithmancy wasn't that bad after all. It did look quite easy.

| A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.
Daichi scribbled down his answers at the front of the classroom while sometimes biting his quill. The theory had him pretty confused but when they started to do the calculations it was actually pretty easy...he hoped.
When done, the first year checked his paper again and wondered if he did the right thing. Frowning first, Daichi then shrugged his shoulders and continued the second part.
Believe in yourself
that was the second parchment, it was something his older brother always said to him when things went wrong. Daichi smiled thinking about it and bend over his parchment.
He then placed his quill back on the desk and waited to see if he did the right calculations.

| Granddaddy Ravenclaw | | Jermione Granger Tiberius narrowed his eyes in concentration as he considered Hadley's next task. Were the five words just practice or were they supposed to use them or what? Did the sums have any meaning at all?
Sighing, more frustrated than confused, he mulled over the sentence. Was it supposed to be about him? Were paragrams personal or just fun? He looked around to see if he knew anyone near him that he thought he could ask, but everyone he even recognized were seats and seats away. It's like I'm a first year, again, he thought glumly, remembering what it was like to not know anyone. And, suddenly, there it was. His sentence! Quote: Sometimes returning is a bit like starting over.
Sometimes
1+6+4+5+2+9+4+5+1=37
returning
9+5+2+3+9+5+9+5+7=54
is a bit
9+1+1+2+9+2=24
like
3+9+2+5=19
starting
1+2+1+9+2+9+5+7=36
over
6+4+5+9=24
37+54+24+19+36=170 Tongue poking out of the corner of his mouth just the tiniest bit in concentration, Tiberius did the addition and checked it over again.
Now, to find out if that bit about coincidences in the beginning was to get them to keep from assigning meaning to things, or if these paragrams did have some sort of meaning.
