As the Fall weather in Britain was still comfortable outside, Professor Hadley had cracked the windows open a bit to allow a lovely September breeze into the classroom before double checking the room setup: Several neat rows, with desks pushed together in pairs.
Once the room was set up in a way she was somewhat satisfied, Fina resumed her customary seat at the front of the room, using her wand to flick the door open. And then another wand flick on the front board:
Please take your seats and take out your textbooks, quill and parchment.
We will begin shortly.
All she needed now was students.
ooc: Lesson will officially begin in a couple hours. Remember that even if I'm not here, Hadley still is, so don't do anything you wouldn't want her to see. Lesson has begun. Any posts from now on stating about arrival WILL be punished accordingly, so please simply pretend as though you've been there all along (for your own benefit and your house)
Professor, I am really confused." William told her. I am not sure what to write dowwn about my name when I come to the blackboard" William said to the professor. My name is William Montcenaggio but I go by the name of William Starr " he explained to the teacher. "Should I use both last names?" Willaim asked the professor.' Ithink I msy hsve it professor" Wiliam beamed.
Here goes- W-5 I-9 L-3-L-3 I-9 A-1 M-4= 34
M-4-O-6 N-5 T-2 C-3 E- 5 N-5 A-1 G-7 G-7 I--9 o-6=60
My name equals 94 this way.
If I uss Starr, then it my name comes out differeent.
W-5- I-9 L-3 L-3 I-9 A-1 M-4= 34
S-1 T-2 A-1 R-9 R-9= 22
This way my name equals 56
Is this right?" William asked the professor.

That made very little sense to her. And that was coming from Isobel, who rarely made sense, even to herself. Synonyms? So...Hufflepuff? Yes, that would work. She wrote that down on her paper and tried to think of more words. How about Captain? That would work too. She could use Quidditch, but she already had captain. They were pretty much the same. So she put family down on her paper, since that was very significant in her life. Isobel decided to add Chocolate, because she loved chocolate. And two more? Happy would work, since she always seemed to be happy, and-oh! How hadn't she thought of it sooner? Soccer! Isobel wrote all five down and began the calculations.
Ariella opened up her textbook. She thought for a moment about what words described her. The first one that popped into mind was Quidditch. She picked up her quill and a fresh sheet of parchment, and began to write.
QUIDDITCH:
8+3+9+4+4+9+2+3+8 = 50
MAGIC:
4+1+7+9+3 = 24
FAMILY:
6+1+4+9+3+7 = 30
Then, she put down her quill and thought of some more words.
A ship in harbor is safe — but that is not what ships are built for.

Smiling at the Hufflepuff first year, Fina shook her head. "Not particularly. Okay...puns and numbers...okay...Savannah tried to remember everything the professor said. She had to admitt it seemed a bit confusing already. But it did seem very interesting. Well, at least Savannah will have something to take about when she's talking to Cassie. She sat up and smiled brightly.
Textbook! Where's her textbook? Savannah ramaged through her bag...ah ha! There it is! Savannah opened up to chapter two and skimed through it. Okay...seems easy so far... Savannah skipped a few pages and smiled. Not bad. Not as bad as she thought! Savannah actually got it! Understood it! Ah ha! Well see who's the genius now Cassie!
Ooooh....did she say we're going to calculate their names? Cool!
S-A-V-A-N-N-A-H

Savannah looked at the textbook again. 8 means expanding? What does that mean? But it's cool!!

Aww Nika was liking the discussion. The calculations were always so tough! Especially because of her struggles with maths. If only she had a calculator. It would making things so much easier for everyone! Nika let out a small groan as she took out her parchment to begin. The first thing she thought of writing was Gryffie because she is so fond of her house and even if the were at negative 30 points they would get more soon... hopefully...
She scribbled down the word deciding that she would come up with the rest before calculating. Hehe trying to stall. She quickly thought of a few more adjectives to describe herself, but she was only at four. HMPM. Only one more but what to write? AHA! THe most obvious one of course! Her Sir name. She wrote down Adler as slowly as she could before starting her calculations.

Kimalia nodded at the new instructions before flipping open her book to the appropriate section in Chapter 2. "Alright, now need 5 words.." She thoughtfully tapped the feather of her quill to her chin whilst looking up. "Definitely Mischievous and Cunning, since that's how I got into this house.." she swiftly wrote down some other words "Thrifty, English for my language, and Unique!". Now the equation part..

"No problem, adding is simple." Kimalia skipped a few spaces in her parchment notes to carefully write out her calculation.
Sitting back and chewing on his lip,....ok first one American 1,4,5,9,9,3,1,5 that is 37 the next one healer healer 8,5,1,3,5,9 that is 31 the next one Friend Friend 6,9,9,5,5,4 that was 38.scratching his head stubborn yea he could be that Stubborn 1,2,3,2,2,6,9,5 that was 30,,,thoughtful thoughtful 2,8,6,3,7,8,2,6,3,3 that was 48 going back and checking his math mikey looks arounf to see if any one is done yet
The first word that popped into Kyle's mind was Infectious because more often than not she had an infectious laugh or smile, or both - or so her family had told her...but seeing as friends seemed to smile and laugh when she did well, that just made it more true to her.
She quickly wrote it down on her parchment, the second word that popped into her mind was lemon because she always smiled when she ate lemondrops, lemon icecream, or sugared lemon rhine's. The third word was clumsy because after all she was VERY clumsy. She chuckled at that. The fourth word she wrote down was create because she really did love creating things. And the last word she wrote down was happy because she was, and always seemed to be happy.
Josephina nodded at the additional response about a coincidence, but said no more on the topic and instead listened to what these kids had to say about paragrams.
But before she could comment on any of the responses, she heard a faint whisper from somewhere in the room and her hazel eyes narrowed in on a small Slytherin girl. "Three points from Slytherin for speaking out of turn after I've begun the lesson." She'll learn next time to use facial expressions or faking note-taking instead of her vocal cords.
SPOILER!!: All you smart kiddies who said something about pun or wordplay
Nodding at each of the students, she smiled. "You're all indeed on the right track. Paragrams could be considered a type of wordplay, which is to say that they imply words to be graceful, well-placed even. It is commonly used in literature, in particular, poetry with all lines having the same sum." Perhaps some of them would see where she was heading now with the lesson... But before she went further, there were confused students.
SPOILER!!: What does this have to do with numbers?!?
Smiling at the two Slytherins, she nodded. "Yes, Arithmancy is indeed about the mysteries associated with numbers. In which I do believe I've been leading up to..." Hadley said, albeit still vaguely. For a moment. "But if you bear with me, then you'll see in a moment how creative and poetic some of these paragrams are. And how you do have to have a knowledge of numbers in order to be able to write them yourself."
"Yes, yes. This is Arithmancy. Gematria is just simply another name that the Ancient Greeks used." Among other people, but they didn't need to worry too much about that. Just a basic history was all they really needed. Hopefully she wasn't confusing the poor girl by using different terminology that ultimately meant the same things.
Smiling at the Hufflepuff first year, Fina shook her head. "Not particularly. The number system that we'll be using for pretty much most of your Arithmancy careers, unless otherwise stated or you delve further into Numerological studies would be the Pythagorean Number System. She decided another one she should add would be her last name since that was a part of who she was, so she wrote HOLLINGBERRY down next to COOKIE. She still needed three more and, preferably, short ones. NAÏVE came to mind, so she added that to the list and paused as she thought of one more before settling on STUDIOUS.
Now came the hard part: calculations. Rolling the sleeves of her robes up a bit, Kurumi got to work.
Having completed this portion, Kurumi set her quill down and picked up her parchment to take a better look at it. She found it interesting that most of her calculations had ended up in the 20’s, with the exception of HOLLINGBERRY, and wondered if this was a trend with everyone else. Was there something significant with numbers in the 20’s? Was it bad if one of the numbers was much higher than the rest? Kurumi supposed she would just have to wait and see how things turned out.
Looking around, she wondered if Treyen and Connor were alright with these calculations. They both seemed to be rubbish at Arithmancy.
Connor had been listening but most of it flew right over his head. Something about coincidences and puns and word plays and how they all had something to do with numbers. He decided to try the number values to 5 things synonymous with him

Yayy she was right! Ariana did a happy dance in her head. And now she was learning more... She took a couple notes on the paragrams.

Okay, not reducing... but why? Hmmm.... Ariana supposed Professor Hadley would explain later, just like she'd explained about the paragrams. But... yay, they got to do math! Though not as fun as reading, math was one of Ariana's favorite classes! So... words relating to her.... BOOKS popped into her mind. Next came RAVENCLAW and WRITER, then ARTIST. Searching around in her head for a bit, Ariana finally came up with MERINGUES. Yum yum
Now she got to calculate stuff, woohoo! She got this done fairly quickly, and looked up at Professor Hadley for further instruction.

Why exactly was he taking Arithmancy again? He'd understood some of what Hadley had been saying, but maybe his mind was somewhere else that he failed to understand what they were supposed to do.
Five words? That described them? How was he supposed to come up with that?
His eyes fell on Kurumi, then on the desk behind the girl, which still had one seat left, well, the choice was rather obvious. He oh-so-sneaky-like changed seats, Treyen had no idea who was sitting next to him now, but he'd been unaware of who had been sitting next to him before. Yet, this way, from this spot, behind Kurumi, he could take a look at her paper.
Hmmm. Okay. So, he didn't know what to write.
Treyen took out a piece of parchment and began to work. Whichever word managed to make it into his mind, then he'll write it down. Fair enough, Hadley?
Yes, Treyen had written 'Prefect' three times, only to change his mind the first two, but he didn't know what other word to come up with, so, third one's a charm.
And he almost wrote 'Keeper' instead of 'Flyer', but since he seemed to have lost his Keeping abilities during the last game, it was fair to say that he remained an excellent flyer still.
Man, starting the first class of the year with tons of caculations, great. And what synonyms are there for me. However instead of dwelling on this is horrible she decided to give it a shot and got to work.

Five words synonomous with who you were? Presley thought for a minute. Well, her name could count for two...She wrote her first and last name on the paper, and added it up.
P-R-E-S-L-E-Y
7+9+5+1+3+5+7=37
B-L-A-C-K
2+3+1+3+2=11
Presley was stumped. She never had been good at those name-poems, and this wasn't very different if you forgot about the math aspect. Finally she settled on the other three words, and added them.
S-H-Y
1+8+7=16
D-A-N-C-E-R
4+1+5+3+5+9=29
A-C-T-O-R
1+3+2+6+9=21
She sighed, and sat back in her seat. Maths had never been a strong point of Presley's. Which was ironic, as her mother had been a muggle maths teacher before...well, just before. Thought Presley, unwilling to think about that now. She glanced around at everyone else, nost of whom were still working, and felt accomplished.

Legend had been quite for most of the class. Hadley had been so set on shooting down his idea he did not feel the need to speak up again. Once again the question of why he was still taking Arithmancy ran through his head. He sort of knew the answer but he really was rubbish at this.
The seventh year slouched into his chair as he quickly tried to think of five words. They came to him easy enough. He quickly scribbled them down and then found the right numbers before adding it all up.

Tiberius pursed his lips in thought, not quite sure what paragrams had to do with anything. He was, however, impressed at the number of students who seemed to know what a paragram was when it came to language.
He tried to remind himself that she had said it was something that had fallen out of common usage, but he had to wonder if there wasn't a reason for that. He reserved judgment, however, and waited for an explanation as to what the numbers would mean.
He began to select words and do the addition, but had to keep reminding himself not to reduce.
Quote:

PRYCE
7+9+7+3+5=31

6+1+4+9+3+7=30
KNOWLEDGE
2+5+6+5+3+5+4+7+5=42
ABRAXAN
1+2+9+1+6+1+5=25
He chose not to read into the fact that unknown and Pryce turned out the same number. It had been why he chose them. He didn't know anything about his father's side of the family... Pryce was unknown.
Shaking the thought from his head, he looked from the scrap paper where he'd done the additions and began to transcribe them into his journal.

Blahhh. Blah, blah, blah.
Sierra really hated Arithmancy. It was boring and didn't amount to much in her opinion. She'd only signed up for it to pretty keep on top of her game. She would beat out Kurumi Hollingberry this year!
At least they didn't have to reduce, meaning all she pretty much had to do was some quick addition, and she'd be over and done with it. Maybe if she picked really short words, it wouldn't take her forever either!
Hmm, okay. So how would she sum herself up in five different words? Well, the first was easy--Greingoth. It was her family's name, her father's name. It was a little longer of a word than she'd aimed for, but oh well. Slytherin just had to be used, too! There was no doubt about that one. She tapped her quill against the desktop as she thought of three more to use. Pretty soon, she'd made her full list and done all the calculations:
Super Slytherin Buddy | | ⅓ She-Snake Trio | | a normal girl with normal knees
The calculations were the easy part, it was just thinking of five words that were synonymous with herself that was the hard part. There were so many words, she didn't know what to choose! Amazing? Beautiful? Absolutely Perfect?
No. No no, she didn't want to make other people jealous or anything. That would be just horrid. Leaning back in her seat, she stared at her notebook, tapping her quill silently on her desk, half her mind on what words she should choose and the other half was focused on Josh next to her. Sooner or later, she'd get this little assignment done.
"Yes, that would be a coincidence and a rather strange one at that, considering the Weird Sisters are like really old by now," Josephina mused at the mention of the infamous band from like seventy years ago.
"Today, however, we'll be working to understand the coincidences associated with a minor art form that has sadly disappeared from daily usage. Though minor, it provides us with another example of the power of numbers. An art form that sprang from Gematria, which is the practice of assigning numbers to letters and thus words to better understand their mystical significance."
Flicking her wand again, her last name appeared on the board:
H-A-D-L-E-Y
8-1-4-3-5-7
"As you can see, the numbers in my name add up to 28, which would be the value associated with my surname. But before we go further, can anyone tell me what exactly is a Paragram?"
She couldn't help herself, she loved them and wish she had known them with they were "in". Her father went on about them all the time. She liked that the Professor was amused, though.
Wisteria was getting pumped with this idea of numbers and not only writing her name down and figuring out the answers, but she was writing her friend's down too. Before she got to the third name she heard the word: Paagram... what is a paragram, she thought and put her quill down before she missed anything new.
I'm just one of those pretty little liars... | | I'm held down in this starless city...

Right, so, calculation time. This didn't seem too hard--five words was a piece of cake. At least, it seemed like that, until he actually started trying to come up with the words. Hufflepuff was a no brainer--he couldn't think of anything better than that to describe himself. But what ELSE? This was so bad, he couldn't even describe himself!
After a few minutes of intense thinking, he came up with his words and carefully assigned the numbers to the letters. Hmmm. This wasn't so bad.

Now that were working steadily on their calculations, it was time for Josephina to mostly rest her voice and compliment or offer feedback where necessary. Some of the students seemed to have confusion over their faces, but not the brilliantly minded third year, in regards to Arithmancy at least.
"Well done, Miss Hollingberry," she smiled as she cast a quick Geminio Charm on the girl's parchment, and transferred her work to the board as a prime example. "For those struggling with what I'm expecting for this part of the lesson, I've copied Miss Hollingberry's work up on the board for you to use an example." A smile flickered over toward the young Gryffindor as Fina then resumed to wandering around the room.
SPOILER!!: Well done, to all of you =)

Though not as fun as reading, math was one of Ariana's favorite classes! So... words relating to her.... BOOKS popped into her mind. Next came RAVENCLAW and WRITER, then ARTIST. Searching around in her head for a bit, Ariana finally came up with MERINGUES. Yum yum
Now she got to calculate stuff, woohoo! She got this done fairly quickly, and looked up at Professor Hadley for further instruction.

Now what, Kurumi?

She sighed, and sat back in her seat. Maths had never been a strong point of Presley's. Which was ironic, as her mother had been a muggle maths teacher before...well, just before. Thought Presley, unwilling to think about that now. She glanced around at everyone else, nost of whom were still working, and felt accomplished.

He began to select words and do the addition, but had to keep reminding himself not to reduce.

No. No no, she didn't want to make other people jealous or anything. That would be just horrid. Leaning back in her seat, she stared at her notebook, tapping her quill silently on her desk, half her mind on what words she should choose and the other half was focused on Josh next to her. "Savannah...." She paused at the Slytherin's desk, beginning slowly. "While I do appreciate your abilities to be able to reduce, unfortunately for this particular exercise, I've asked you to NOT reduce. Simply because as you'll see during the official Paragram writing process, reduction to single-digits are NOT necessary and may even ruin the symmetry." Now how's that for poetic? Hehe.

Now a Gryffindor... Smiling at the young first year and his awesome addition capabilities (no seriously! It was awesome!), Josephina nodded. "Yes, your name does equal that, but I didn't ask you to necessarily calculate your name, but more I wanted you to calculate the number associated with five different traits you can use to describe yourself. For instance, I'm rather the avid reader, so I can calculate the number associated with 'reader'." She smiled again at the boy.

When Rebecca was done, she put down her quill and waited to see what Professor Hadley was going to say next.
At first, Hadley nearly missed it, but upon second glance, she noticed a slight calculation error. "My dear, though these word calculations are simply just for practice to get you comfortable with the letters to number conversion process, you've made a slight error with your last word. I believe it should be 31, not thirty-two." She smiled at the girl, hoping to not startle her too much.

Before she got to the third name she heard the word: Paagram... what is a paragram, she thought and put her quill down before she missed anything new.
"Did you wish to practice some with converting letters to numbers and calculating the numbers associated with those words?" Josephina asked of the young Lion who seemed rather unfocused on the task at hand.
Turning her attention back to the whole class; "Feel free to continue to work on your calculations for a little bit longer and if you feel up to it, then you may jump ahead to the next piece in writing a paragram," she paused, letting this sink in. Because they honestly didn't think that one word characteristics with NO meaning whatsoever would be considered one, right? "Which would be translating whole sentences into number values. And to do this, you must add together the values from each word to get a final value for that sentence. Again, remember, do not reduce." She reiterated the last bit sternly, once more, because she knew she always emphasized the reduction in any previous calculation they've done for Arithmancy. This was different.

Right. A sentence. Ariana could do this. Yeah!
Now she just had to think of a sentence.... resting her chin in her hands as she thought, she decided on "I like to read." Short and simple. So she wrote that down and began calculating.

Toothless - Napoleon of Crime - Gryffinclaw - Owl Emissary - Pirate Auror - DoctorDonna
Hmm five words about himself to use in comparison...not as easy as one might think since he always had trouble describing himself...never wanting to brag or such. Well captain would work, he mused to himself writing it down before adding Bennett on top with the calculations he had previously done in another class. Loyal might fit as well, he added remembering something that had been said of him at one point in time. Thinking it over a bit longer, Simon eventually had three more words that would fit including one he was sure Josh would agree on for him.
